FSU HAPPENINGS

Toastmasters International (TI) has officially awarded a community club charter to “Bronco Toastmasters” (Club #996-283) of Fayetteville effective February 4, 2007. It took six long months but due to a great team effort, it is a “done deal.” Mr. Mike Kesselring, TI District Governor for NC, called regarding the club’s status and said there will be an official chartering ceremony at FSU in early April (specific date TBD). He and other state and local TI officials plan to attend. The public is invited. Now, at long last, Cumberland County, an area in excess of 300k citizens, is

serviced by two Toastmasters Clubs. It is not unusual to find TI clubs over 50 years old. The club meets every Monday evening, 6 pm- 7 pm, in SBE 207.

There are nearly 30 members. They represent students, faculty, staff and local citizens from the community. It takes a minimum of 20 paid members to charter a club. Official sponsors of Bronco Toastmasters include Dave Allen and Bernard Fleming. University sponsors include Assad Tavakoli and Craig Wishart. Official charter members of Bronco Toastmasters include:

IN SUMMARY--Toastmaster’s International for Public Speaking is 83 years old. Founded in 1924 by Dr. Ralph Smedley in a YMCA in Santa Ana, CA, it is dedicated to practice and training in the art of public speaking, presiding over meetings, and just plain old promotion of sociability and good fellowship among its members. Worldwide, TM now consists of over 200,000 members

in 90 countries spread across 10,500 clubs! Members focus on progression through project books that range from achievement of the Competent Communicator award (CC) to the Advanced Communicator awards (AC) to the highest level, Distinguished Toastmasters Award (DTM). There are also speech contests that culminate in an annual World Championship of Public Speaking. Bottom line? It’s just plain old fun! Come join us!

Dear Alumni and Friends:

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for all that you have done and continue to do for Fayetteville State University. FSU is a special place with special people--largely because people like you have invested your time and resources into the fine institution that you know and love. I am proud to say that even greater things are in store for FSU, and you have an opportunity to be part of them.

On March 29, 2007, FSU kicked off its Annual Fund Drive. During this time, we launched one of our most aggressive fundraising campaigns in the 140-year history of this institution. Our goal is to raise $1.5 million before the fiscal year ends on June 30. That date is only three months away, but there is no doubt in my mind that this feat can be achieved because we have caring alumni, and friends like you who are concerned about our future.

The money raised from this campaign will be used to enhance FSU’s academic portfolio, provide scholarships for deserving students, and enhance the university’s status as one of the premier academic institutions not only in North Carolina but also one in this entire country. This goal can only be reached only with your generous support.

Once your contribution is received, we will send a letter personally thanking you for your support. Also, at the conclusion of the campaign, we will publish a listing of all donors. These will be just a few of the ways that we will acknowledge your gift and show to others that you are a loyal and supportive Bronco.

Please demonstrate that you adhere to our university motto, “Res Non Verba” (Deeds Not Words), by using the attached form to send your tax-deductible contribution today.

Again, thank you for your support of Fayetteville State University.

Yours truly,

T. J. BryanChancellor

FSU Retirees Club

In November, 1988, Chancellor Lloyd V. Hackley requested that a group of FSU Retirees meet with him in the Student Center. He greeted everyone warmly and congratulated all on having reached retirement. He informed the group that he had discovered a talented group, who could be an asset to the University. After detailed discussion, it was agreed that the group would organize and the name Retirees Club was selected. The mission of the FSU Retirees Club is to assist the administration, faculty, and students in attaining their objectives at FSU by consulting, creating scholarship funds, recruiting retirees and identifying potential students. This year alone the Retirees Club has committed to raising $10,000 for the University, and has fulfilled $6,000 of their commitment thus far. On May 20th the annual Grandparents Baby Contest will be held where the group expects to raise the additional funds to meet their $10,000 goal.

Dr. Todd S. Frobish, Department of Performing and Fine Arts, has published the first-ever edited anthology of the WORST SPEECHES IN AMERICAN HISTORY. Crises in American Oratory: A History of Rhetorical Inadequacy is the first collection and critical analysis of the great upsets in American oratory. By focusing on these controversial discourses, Frobish shows us that public speaking is an art with the potential for both success and failure. This text highlights a carefully chosen and historically relevant mix of rhetorically inadequate and hard-to-find orations, and reveals the nuances of real world public speaking and the consequences of poor communication.

Crises in American Oratory is divided into 3 parts to cover three forms of oratory: forensic oratory, or those speeches dealing with issues of the past; epideictic oratory, or those speeches dealing the present; and deliberative speeches, or those speeches dealing with the future. Each of these parts contains several chapters and a relevant collection of speeches that present, define, critique, and theorize about the nature of rhetorical inadequacy.
