HAPPENINGS FROM THE CHAIRA Publication of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities

WINTER/SPRING 2014

Robert Haimsohn, Chair, Board of Trustees

The Honor Was Ours

For those of you who attended the Women’s Auxiliary

Gala on February 1st, you will be able to relate to what I

am writing; for those who didn’t I am sure you too

will understand.

There is something very awe-inspiring about being amongst over 350 people gathered in one

place, on one special night, to honor one special couple and one critical organization.

Every person present at the 36th Annual Women’s Auxiliary Gala was there for a common goal.

To honor Sylvia and David Geffen and Seacrest Village. Together, the Geffens, as well as many of

you, make it possible for the people who came before us to be honored the way they deserve

to be honored. Honor. A very meaningful word on the night of February 1st.

I sat and watched as the video of the Geffens played, and listened to the common thread of

what was said by their dear friends and children. The thread was Dor L’ Dor. From Generation

to Generation the Geffens are part of a legacy from their parents, grandparents and great

grandparents. It is a legacy of Tikkun Olam and it was evident on this evening that they are

passing this on to their children—so that they may pass it to their children—and so it goes.

I have had the privilege of being part of Dor L’ Dor from two perspectives. Generations of my

family have lived in the Homes and I have witnessed the love and compassion that is shown

each and every day. And as the Chair of the Homes I am part of ensuring that for generations

to come we are fiscally sound, meeting the needs of the community, applying best practices

every step of the way, are diligent and current in the provision of healthcare, and that of

great importance we recognize and support the staff who are charged with the ultimate

responsibility of oversight of this enormous task.

It goes without saying that I am proud of the Homes. I hope you are too. f

My mother turned 70 this year. That means that the year mom was born so was San Diego Hebrew Homes. That’s a plentiful thought. Mom had three kids, has been through many very difficult times and at 70, though suffering with several ailments, you would never know by her non-ending optimism for life and desire for new beginnings. Her apartment is adorned with photos of her family—not to mention the leopard pattern that covers most of it. Mom makes beautiful jewelry, sending monthly packages to the battered women’s shelter so those less fortunate can have an extra something pretty to wear. She watches her grandchildren and keeps track of their every activity so she can ask them how each event went. Last year she spearheaded a b’nai mitzvah at Seacrest Village, and last week she made her own tallit with Rabbi Patti. She’s a special lady, and I could go on and on.

And there is this great organization called Seacrest Village Retirement Communities. Started by 16 ladies in 1944, they affectionately referred to themselves as The Jolly 16. Together they led the way to the purchase of a small home on 4th Avenue in San Diego which housed 10 people.

Years went by, and with the generosity of this great Jewish Community in which we live, the small home grew to a new location on 54th Street. Decades later a move was made to Encinitas, which is today the main campus of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities, with another beautiful site located in Poway. The generosity of our community has allowed thousands of people like Mom to live full and enriched lives with the utmost dignity.

And for those over-protective and possibly sandwich generation children out there like me, there is now yet another new benefit, Seacrest at Home. Seacrest at Home is the newest affiliate of Seacrest Village. The sole purpose of Seacrest at Home is to allow people to remain in their own homes (or apartment if they live at one of the Seacrest campuses) and to bring services to them so that they can be as independent as possible. The company also provides companions to go to appointments with someone or to stay in the hospital with them if needed. There are many different things that can be offered to make life easier. For the first time ever, I felt comfortable leaving Mom overnight in the hospital—all because of Seacrest at Home—and I was able to go home to my family. Many of us who work in healthcare understand the need for an advocate to be present with someone in the hospital—Mom’s advocate on a few nights was Seacrest at Home, and I felt 100% comfortable.

Prior to two years ago these two worlds of Mom and the Homes had not met with the exception of my constant bragging remarks to Mom about the organization for which I work and love.

Thank you Jolly 16. Two worlds meet, Mom’s and the Homes. Two great beginnings 70 years ago and both with a life’s mission.

My gratitude to both. f

Over the years, Seacrest has weathered many storms. Fires caused us to evacuate both our campuses, sending many residents as far as Los Angeles. Electrical power outages have left our residents without power for hours and even days. The truth is, we experience life and death, happy and sad, just like a family— in fact, we call it our Seacrest Village family.

And like any family, there is growth and there are changes. Over the past 25 years I have watched the Homes grow and much of it has been in response to the changes in our healthcare system. And while much change is directed from regulatory agencies, much is also in response to the needs and desires of you, your friends and family members who entrust us with providing great care.

Years ago a level of care called assisted living emerged which allowed seniors to be cared for in a more residential setting. Then, as more seniors were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, the need for a secure environment became apparent as well as the continued desire to live in a more residential atmosphere.

Next, consumer demands drove the senior living industry to introduce new amenities such as computer rooms, fitness and aquatic centers, movie theatres and more. And as wonderful and important as these types of amenities are in senior communities, there is nothing more important than the staff that work there and care for the residents. Over the years, I have worked with some of the finest employees who deliver this care with tremendous love and compassion. I am proud to work with these extraordinary people and cherish the work that we do as our Seacrest Village family.

It’s been just over a year since we launched Seacrest at Home, our non-medical home care agency that brings care and companionship to you, wherever you reside. Thanks to the efforts of many, this endeavor has been very successful and the needs continue to grow.

A few weeks ago we welcomed a new Vice President of Operations to our organization. Kim Fuson comes to us with tremendous experience in senior housing, healthcare and advocacy. Kim spent many years working in another Jewish home which shares our values and traditions, and already feels as though Seacrest Village is her “home.”

As we look to the future, our Seacrest Village family will be changing and growing to meet the needs of our next generations. This includes our soon to open senior day care program for those with mild cognitive dementia. We want to always respond to your needs and desires so that our Seacrest Village family can continue to serve our community the way you, your friends and family members want to be served.

With gratitude. f

Perpetuity is a Long Time“Perpetuity” is one of those five-dollar words you don’t run across every day. Chances are, you’ll never hear it on the six-o’clock news or read it in the evening paper. And it’s definitely not something you will see on a theatre marquee.

But perpetuity is a word we cherish at the Seacrest Foundation and we use it often as it describes the named funds held at the Seacrest Foundation.

According to Webster, perpetuity is “the state or quality of being perpetual.” The phrase “in perpetuity” means “forever or for anindefinite period.”

Trumpet Sounds It is said that every noise produced on earth creates sound waves that expand outward toward the infinite reaches of space. The waves extend unendingly. Or we might say, the sound waves travel in perpetuity.

Creating your own named fund at Seacrest Foundation is similar to blowing a trumpet into the air. Like the far-reaching waves of the notes, the effects of your named fund will carry unendingly to future generations. Dor L’ Dor of Mitzvot.

As more individuals and families are learning about named funds at Seacrest Foundation we are thrilled to have the increased awareness and interest. Our named funds are all managed prudently by investment professionals. The goal is to obtain both annual income and long term growth.

It is the policy of Seacrest Foundation to preserve the principal in named funds. Only the earnings, or part of the earnings, are available to be used annually. This means our named funds will last. They will continue in perpetuity. And every name associated with every fund will endure as well.

Would you like to do something lasting for Seacrest Foundation and those whose lives are enhanced through the work of Seacrest Foundation? This is the ideal way to create a legacy for yourself and your family.

To learn more about a named fund and how easily you can establish one, contact us at 760-632-0081.

You can get started now with a current gift or you can activate one later through a deferred gift. Or, of course, you can take part in both ways.

Please take a moment and let us hear from you. It is our goal to help meet your eleemosynary objectives and to convey our deepest appreciation for the difference you can make in the lives of others. f

A MESSAGE

from the RabbiRabbi Patti Haskell

I’m sitting on the sofa in my office next to a resident who lives in independent living, awed by her dedication as she concentrates on what I’m teaching her. She is making a tallit, a prayer shawl, and asked that I teach her to tie the tzitzit, the strings on the four corners of her tallit that represent the mitzvot, the commandments. Her hands shake a little, but she is determined and I feel her strength as she winds one string around seven others. When we finish she will wear her new tallit to Shabbat morning services.

I’m sitting next to a resident in the healthcare center with siddurim, prayer books, opened on our laps. We are working to prepare a celebration of his upcoming birthday during a Shabbat service. He will co-lead the service with me and he has coined a new term for this celebration that he hopes will be used by others for a variety of happy occasions: Yom Tov Mitzvah, a good day for a mitzvah!

I’m standing on the bima of the synagogue looking out at a new assisted living resident whose two

great granddaughters are beside me in the arms of their mothers and fathers. We are celebrating their brit bat, their naming ceremony, as they receive their Hebrew names. They are being brought into the covenant of the Jewish people and the

Jewish community here in their great grandmother’s shul at Seacrest.

I’m leading Shabbat services and look out where the residents who live in our dementia building sit. Every week I

am amazed at their attention to the prayers, to the pages of their siddurim, to their pure presence as we wander together through words and songs of prayer.

All of them bring to mind for me the Haggadah that is read at most every Passover Seder. In it there are four children (four sons in a traditional Haggadah) who ask why we have a Seder and what is its meaning. One is wise, one is wicked, one is innocent, and one does not know how to ask.

The beauty of humanity is that every human being is unique, thus each of our residents walks his or her own path in life. Each approaches the meaning of their own life, like the Seder, with distinctive questions and equally distinctive answers. I see none as wicked, I see most as wise, surely I see some who do notknow how to ask, and I also see incomparable innocence inour resident’s openness to learn and to experience new moments no matter what their age. f

SThe Women’s Auxiliary of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities held its 36th Annual Gala, “Sapphire Jubilee” at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla in honor of Sylvia & David Geffen for their philanthropic impact on the Jewish community on February 1, 2014. The event raised over $350,000 to be used for the provision of charitable care for those residents who, many due to illness or injury, have exhausted their financial resources.

Guests received a Blue Carpet greeting to coincide with the sapphire theme and enjoyed cocktails prepared by the Flairaholiks (juggling bartenders). The evening commenced with a warm welcome by Robert Haimsohn, Chair of the Board followed by Dan Cohen, Master of Ceremonies and Emmy Award winning Morning Anchor of CBS News 8. Bob thanked everyone for their support of Seacrest Village and gave special recognition to the Board of Trustees and Executive staff. Pam Ferris, President & CEO welcomed her colleagues and three VIP tables of Seacrest Village residents who were in attendance.

Honorees Sylvia and David Geffen were moved to tears after watching a brief video including tributes from respected community philanthropists, Jerome Katzin, Melissa and Michael Bartell, Silvana and Richard Christy along with Suzi and Bernie Feldman. Everyone in attendance agreed with a standing ovation that the Geffens have helped to build a brighter and stronger San Diego through their selfless acts of philanthropy and leadership.

Past Gala Co-Chair, Larry Bloch, gave his personal testimony as to why the Resident Assistance Fund is a real priority, and guests responded enthusiastically by raising their bid numbers. Larry shared the following advice from his mother to inspire the audience to make a charitable contribution to Seacrest Village, “You will never go poor helping out someone in need.” It was truly an evening to remember filled with friends, fine food and funds raised dedicated to the residents at Seacrest Village Retirement Communities.
