Winter Water Saving Tips

Winter Water News!

It’s exciting to watch the snow accumulate, and not just

because we like to ski and snowboard!

Our municipal water comes from rain and snow that falls

on Mt. Ashland. So, more snow could mean more

available water for the summer months, especially if the

colder temperatures stick around.

It’s fun to imagine that the snow falling today could be

used in and around your home this upcoming summer

(after it’s been treated, of course.)

Have you noticed the snow up on Mt. Ashland? Water words! What is the term for the

amount of water contained in

snow pack?

See the next page to find out.

Snow Water Equivalent The amount of water contained

in snow pack is referred to as the

snow water equivalent.

Winter Water Words!

Imagine if you were able to melt all the snow for an entire area instantaneously

and then measure the volume of water that resulted….that is the snow water

equivalent. Interestingly, it is not as easy as just measuring snow depth. You also

need to know the density of the snow, and snow density is dependent on many

factors including elevation, the temperature outside when the snow fell, how long

it’s been on the ground, wind, melting, and recrystallization.

City of Ashland Water Conservation programs While you may already know about some of our programs, we’d like to

take this opportunity to share with you more about our offerings:

This free service helps you identify ways to save water inside

the home. We can help you find, and perhaps even fix, simple

leaks, install low flow faucet aerators, and showerheads.

And, if you are ready to invest in new fixtures or appliances,

we can help you determine where you’ll get the biggest water

savings for your investment.

Rebates Have an old, leaky toilet?

You could be eligible for up to a $75 rebate

when you upgrade to a new WaterSense

labeled 1.28 gallon per flush toilet.*

* Rebates are also offered for Dishwashers, Washing Machines, Refrigerators, & Electric Clothes Dryers.

Indoor Water Use Evaluation

More Winter Water Saving Tips

Fill Your Dishwasher. Dishwashers can save quite a bit of water , especially when you fill them.

Newer EnergyStar dishwashers might use as little as 2 gallons of water per cycle!

FREE low flow faucet aerators and showerheads are available to ALL Ashland residents. A

family of four could reduce their indoor water use by up to 60% when replacing old toilets, shower-

heads, bathroom aerators, and washing machines with low water use versions.

Wash full loads of laundry. Waiting to wash your clothes until you have a full load will save the

most water. If you are in pinch and actually need that favorite pair of pants washed NOW, remember

to reset the load size to match the amount of clothing you are washing.

Collect snow or rainwater. If we have snow, br ing in a bucket to thaw. You can then use that

water to water your houseplants.

Outdoor Water

Did you know that approximately 50% of

our annual water use is for things outside?

While we aren’t watering the lawn or garden

this time of year, it is a great time to plan for

spring.

If you are curious how much water you will

need to water your landscape this upcoming

summer, consider trying out our

Outdoor Water Use Calculator!

City of Ashland Water Conservation programs While you may already know about some of our programs, we’d like to

take this opportunity to share with you more about our offerings:

Healthy, green lawns require a lot of water

and maintenance. Perhaps you are ready to

transition to a water wise landscape. The

City offers a rebate per square foot of lawn

transformed to landscape. You can get ideas

and look at past projects by visiting:

Sprinkler System Evaluation

Consider giving us a call when it’s time to get the sprinkler system fired up again. We can check to see how

well your current irrigation system is functioning and fix minor problems. We can also go over how to set

and use your irrigation timer. You will then receive a customized report with suggestions to implement on

your own or pass on to your landscape contractor. The best part, it’s FREE!
