PRESIDENT

Happy Valentine's Day to Everyone.

This winter weather has certainly upset some of our well planned activities, but that's Illinois. Our next County event is lesson

and crafting on March 2nd, then BINGO on Thursday, March 22nd. Please come join us and have lots of fun. We'll be there 10-

2pm. Bring either a light snack or a white elephant.

The last lesson on Feb. 2 with Chelsey Byers on "Care Giver, Self Care" was totally excellent. I'm sorry that so many people

missed it. The weather again. We certainly appreciate all that the Extension providers do for us. Joann O"Connor was a great

helper and we do miss her, and she certainly found a great replacement. Thank you Joann and Suzy.

The plans for the Centennial Celebration are going great. Nancy Benz and Luanna Olson are planning

an amazing program. Please make plans to attend. Submitted by Mary Lou Younger

FAMILY AND COMMUNITY ISSUES While filling out our state report I was so proud of all the community

work that Champaign County has accomplished this past year. We have 3 HCE Units that help support DSC group homes, donated

to Urban Ministry and Helping Hands, filled backpacks for Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, give needed items to “Courage Connection”,

sew and give weighted blankets to autistic children in the area, hold weekly coffee get-togethers at the library for people to connect,

and so much more. Thank you all for your community service - here’s to a great 2018!

INTERNATIONAL Our country of study this year is Australia officially the commonwealth of Australia. It is a

sovereign country comprising of the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands. It

is the largest country in Oceania and world's sixth largest country by total area. The neighboring countries are Papua New Guinea,

Indonesia and East Timor to the north; the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu to the north-east; and New Zealand to the south-

east. Australia's capital is Canberra, and the largest urban area is Sydney.

For about 50,000 years before the first British settlement in the last 18th century, Australia was inhabited by indigenous

Australians, who spoke languages classifiable into roughly 250 groups. After the

European discovery of the continent by Dutch explorers in 1606, Australia's eastern half was claimed by Great Britain in 1770 and

initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales from 26 January 1788. The population grew

steadily in subsequent decades, and by 1850s most of the continent had been explored and an additional five self-governing crown

colonies established. On 1January 1901, the six colonies federated, forming the Commonwealth of Australia. Australia has since

maintained a stable liberal democratic political system that functions as a federal parliamentary constitutional monarch comprising

six states and several territories.

Australia has the world's 13th largest economy and tenth highest per capita income. With the second highest human development

index globally, the country ranks highly in quality of life, health, education,

economic freedom, and civil liberties and political rights. The population of 25 million is highly urbanized and heavily

concentrated on the eastern seaboard. Australia has the world's 9th largest

immigrant population, with immigrants accounting for 26% of the population. Information from WikipediaI

Jean's Craft Club:

We just finished doing Button earrings and a Valentine Heart decoration. We had so much fun and since

Richey and Mary Lou used all their own supplies, they decided not to charge. We had a great time!

On March 2nd, around 10:15 a.m., we will be doing quilt squares and make a pot holder or possibly another

quilt form. We'll also be learning how to do a cloth gift bag. The bags are beautiful and fun and easy to do.

If you have fabric or fabric scraps you want to use-bring it along. Otherwise, the charge is $3. Remember

to bring your scissors. Richey Vanderspool and Mary Lou Younger

Celebrating Illinois It is a Midwestern state bordering Indiana in the east and the Mississippi River in the west. It is nicknamed the

Prairie State. Chicago one of the largest cities in the US is in the northeast on the shores of Lake Michigan. It is

famous for its skyscrapers such as the 1451 foot Willis Tower and the Neo Gothic Tribune Tower. Illinois ranks

10th for infrastructure and is among the top states for gender equality. It has one of the best internet speeds and

lowest suicide rates. Some famous Illinois foods are Chicago style popcorn. It is a blend of cheese and caramel corn.

Chicago style hot dogs have tomatoes, sport peppers and mustard ( no ketchup) There are many more interesting facts coming up in

future months. Hope you enjoyed these fun facts. Bobbi McEntire 1st vice &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Recipe for Home Made Floor Wax from March 1936 “The Home Bureau Bulletin”

1/2 lb. of beeswax or

1/4 lb. of bees wax and

1/4 lb. paraffin or

1/2 lb. of paraffin

1/2 pt. turpentine

1/2 pt. denatured alcohol

Mix wax in pan over slow fie, being careful ot to spill the wax. Remove from fire and stir in turpentine and alcohol. Stir until the

mixture is a thick paste, pour into a covered jar and label. Paraffin wax may be used economically instead of beeswax.

Apply a small amount with a soft woolen or fine cotton cloth and rub wood thoroughly until there is no free wax remaining on

the surface.

CAUTION: this recipe calls for turpentine which is very inflammable. Have no fire or flame in room when handling it.

Champaign County Home and Community Education

100th Anniversary Celebration

Saturday, July 7, 2018

2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Savoy Methodist Church

Home Improvement Association began in Champaign County was started in September 1917 by Florence E. McConnell, Home

Demonstration Agent for District VII. By January 31, 1918, 500 Champaign County women has signed cards pledging to support

the new organization. Thus Champaign County Home and Community Education was incorporated as the Champaign County

Home Improvement Association on May 15, 1918. Mrs. Nora Burt Dunlap, the wife of State Senator Henry M. Dunlap, was one of

the main force in organizing Champaign County women of 1918 into the Champaign County Home Improvement Association,

which soon became “Home Bureau”. In 1962, Home Bureau was changed to “Homemakers Extension Association”, in 1993 was

changed to “Family and Community Education” and 1996 was changed to “Home and Community Education’. Our core beliefs

have not changed, as noted in our homemaker’s aim. Mrs. Dunlap opened her home for Home Bureau meetings time after time

and innumerable demonstrations were given in her kitchen, the most up-to-date kitchens for miles around. She enjoyed entertaining

and frequently hosted many gatherings. Teas were frequent and garden parties on the beautiful grounds were

popular. Mrs. Dunlap was one of the best known women in East Central Illinois because of her keen interest in

women’s organizations. She was active in all movements having as their aim the betterment of home life and

surroundings. It was her activity in this line that won her the honor of “master-homemaker”.

Mrs. Dunlap was born February 5, 1856 in Coshocton, Ohio. When she was eleven, her father died and her

mother took her with another daughter and a son to live in Peoria. Her mother went through teachers college so

she could support her children.

Mrs. Dunlap entered the University of Illinois at the age of 15 and attended two years. After graduation, she

taught in county schools until she married Senator Dunlap when she was 21 years old. They were married in

1877 after Senator Dunlap graduated from the University of Illinois. Sen. Dunlap operated his family farm which

included a large apple orchard and a spacious brick home just south of Champaign on Route 45 in Savoy, IL. The couple lived in

what is now called The Senator’s Inn and Pub in Savoy.

Mrs. Dunlap and her husband had experienced the loss of every one of their four children. The children died within a week of

each other of diphtheria. This, of course, was many years before she began working to form a homemaker’s organization in the

county. In 1918 is when the charter was signed and Nora was 62 years old. She felt that if she had known more as a young mother

about good nutrition, sanitation, and disease prevention, some of the Dunlap children might have survived. This was why she was

determined that other homemakers would have the opportunity to acquire this “out of school” education. She knew that she was

fortunate to have an education and that many women; especially rural women, did not have this advantage available to them.

Mrs. Dunlap, through her influence, helped to bring “Domestic Science” into the schools in Illinois. It was through her efforts,

too, that the Women’s Building at the Stat Fair Grounds was erected. She was the founder of the School of Domestic Science at the

State Fair.

Mrs. Dunlap not only organization the Champaign County Home Bureau, specifically the Savoy Unit, but served as its first

Champaign County President for eight years. She was an active member until her death of a heart attack on February 9, 1932 at the

age of 76. Mrs. Dunlap was also instrumental in getting the first girls club (4-H) in Champaign County.

During the 1960’s, Champaign County had 27 units with over 1,000 in membership. Today, February 2018, the County has 15

units and 309 members.
