Happy New Year, Happy New Year

Happy 2012. And while we’re at it, Happy 4345 and 4612, too!

If you’re new to Korea, you probably don’t realize the excitement that’s awaiting you this month. In addition to celebrating the normal New Year on January 1, you’re also going to be celebrating the Lunar New Year on January 23.

Under “Old Korea” rules, this will be the year 4345 – different than the Chinese New Year which is celebrated on the same day but will be year 4612. Confused? It gets better. The day is celebrated in Vietnam but is called Tet, ignored in Japan and not celebrated until March or April in other Asian countries. No matter. The only ones we need to worry about are January

1 (which will be celebrated on January 2 this year because the first is a Sunday) and January 23, which is in the middle of a three-day holiday that turns Korean expressways into parking lots as millions of people return to their hometowns in annual Family reunions.

Korean New Year uses the Chinese Zodiac – 12 animals who determine the personality, fortune and future of people born under the various animal signs.

If you’re expecting and your baby is born on the 23rd or later, your child will be born under the sign of the Dragon. Babies born before the 23rd are under the sign of the Rabbit.

Lunar New Year will be celebrated with special decorations, great food and in many areas of the country, fireworks.

Year of the Water Dragon

While the Year of the Dragon arrives every 12 years on the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of the Water Dragon only arrives every 60 years.

The Dragon is already considered the strongest of the signs in the Chinese Zodiac and has the distinction of being the only mythical creature among the 12.

Dragons are said to have some positive personality traits to include Innovation, Enterprise, Flexibility, Self-assurance and Bravery.

But they are also Conceited, Tactless and Quick-tempered.

Water has a calming effect on the Dragon's fearless temperament. Water allows the Dragon to re-direct its enthusiasm, and makes him more perceptive of others.

Water Dragons are better equipped to take a step back to re-evaluate a situation because they understand the art of patience and do not desire the spotlight like other Dragons.

Therefore, they make smart decisions and are able to see eye-to-eye with other people. However, their actions can go wrong if they do not research or if they do not finish one project before starting another.

Dragons are blessed with good health and should marry a Rat, a Snake or Monkey. They need to stay away from Dogs, Sheep, Rabbits and Oxen.

Among the most-hearty of the Animal signs, they can suffer bad health as a result of stress. Symptoms of their personalities often stem from emotional outbursts and can range from tension headaches to depression to hypertension.

As for careers, Dragons make good officers in the Armed Forces, Engineers, Politicians, Lawyers, Philosophers, Inventors and Architects.

Have you ever wondered why your Korean friends ages are different than yours – even when you were both born on the same day?

Something unique to Asia is the practice of “Age Reckoning” -- a concept that originated in China and is widely used by other cultures in Asia which share this traditional way of counting a person's age.

Newborns start at one year old, and each passing of a Lunar New Year, rather than the birth date, adds one year to the person's age.

In other words, the first year of life is counted as one instead of zero, so that a person is two years old in their second year, three years old in their third, and so on.

Since age is incremented on the new year rather than on a birthday, people may be 1 or 2 years older in Asian reckoning than in the Western system. For example – a baby born in November is 1-year-old. When Lunar New Year arrives in January, the baby is now 2-years old – even those it is only 2-months old in Western culture.

Today this system is still commonly used by some Chinese people. The system is also widely used by Koreans, with the exception of the legal system and newspapers.

So when Lunar New Year rolls around this month, wish all your Korean friends a “Happy Birthday.” They will appreciate the gesture.

Escape via Space-A Travel

Need to get off the Korean peninsula but are strapped for cash? Maybe Space-A travel is your answer. Camp Humphreys kicks off its 6th annual Biggest Losers Contest New Year’s Day. Since its start, participants have combined to lose more than a ton. More importantly, hundreds of people have developed a healthier lifestyle – the actual goal of the contest. We have made some changes in this year’s contest, and there are always repeated questions when the contest gets under way. Hopefully, you’ll find the answers here:

Camp Humphreys Biggest Losers

Q-Who can join the Biggest Losers Contest? A-Everyone – US and Korean military and civilians, Family members and everyone who can get on post. In the case of children – to include teens – we strongly recommend a doctor be consulted beforehand. As far as that goes, all participants should consult a doctor before starting any weight loss program.

Q-Do I have to have a partner or can I enter as an individual? A-Unlike the popular television show, Biggest Losers was originally created as a contest for couples. However, over the years we’ve learned that couples don’t always stay with the program because of PCS or just losing energy. Therefore, everyone is now entered as both a team and as an individual. That way if you lose your partner, you can continue and win a prize.

Q-I don’t have that much weight to lose. How can I win? In addition to building a healthier body – which already makes you a winner – you can also win over people who lose much more weight. That’s because winners are determined by Percentage of Weight Lost between weigh-in and the final weigh-in on May 5.

Q-The contest opens Jan 1, nut I won’t be here. Can I still join? A-Since standings are determined on percentage of weight lost between entry and May 5, you technically could join May 4. Just go to the front counter of the Super Gym and ask to weigh-in. If you and your partner can’t weigh in at the same time, just let the front desk know the name of your team and the name of your partner.

Q-I understand Biggest Losers used to end in April. But now it goes through May. Why? A-A combination of factors extended the contest. The first is the School Spring Break Many people plan vacations during the Spring Break and couldn’t be here for the awards ceremony. Since that already took us to the third weekend in April. With a new theme of “Get Ready for Splish & Splash Opening on Memorial Day Weekend, we decided to continue the contest Until May 5 with the awards ceremony May 12. Also, weight loss should be gradualand many people will actually gain weight the first six weeks as fat is turned into muscle. The extra time should help make a healthier you – the whole purpose of the contest.

The food is “buffo.” The service is first class. Add excellent parking, being close to post and appealing on both inside and outside and you have the new Rio Grill.

The Anjung-ri restaurant is across from the post office and is easy to reach. Just go straight out the main gate and stay on the main road. You’ll see it on your left in 10 minutes of less (depending on how many red lights you hit).

Three brothers from Brazil (Alex, Berto, and Palos) have brought authentic Brazilian Cuisine to Anjung-ri, They also have a location in Songtan.

The menu is the same for lunch (1100-1630) and dinner (1630-2200). The lunch price Monday-Friday is 20,000 won per person, with the dinner and weekend price 26,000 won. It’s worth it.

A perfectly grilled Beef Tenderloin steak is followed by skewer after skewer of various mouth-watering marinated meats – Top Sirloin, Rump Steak, Bottom Sirloin, Garlic Beef and Beef & Bacon, Chicken & Bacon, Chicken Drumsticks and Sausage,

The final course is a fantastic grilled Pineapple dusted in cinnamon sugar. Oh! Did a mention the Salad Bar with soups, rice, grilled potatoes, corn, lettuce and bread?

I should also mention it’s all you can eat. They come right to your table and carve what you want off the skewer. They also provide tongs to make it easy to grab your helpings.

The beef is from Australia, the sausage from Korea and the chicken from Brazil. But the cooking is all Brazilian – slow grilled on a rotisserie and brought to your table hot off the grill.

In addition, the bar is well stocked and they mix a killer cocktail. I highly recommend it for a different dining experience.

Customer Service Survey

Each year in connection with the Lunar New Year, Camp Humphreys Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation conducts a comprehensive survey that evaluates:

Customer Service Facility Satisfaction Program Satisfaction How you receive FMWR Information, and,

Most importantly, gathers suggestions from the Soldier, Civilians and Family Members as to what we can do to better meet your needs.

Survey results are examined by FMWR managers and programmers with a fine tooth comb and have led to some significant changes in the overall FMW program.

The survey should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.

As an incentive to get you to participate, Family & MWR Marketing is purchasing three large stuffed Dragons to give away. When you complete the survey, just send a message to Marketing Chief Mike Mooney at [email protected] to go into the drawing for one of the Dragons. The drawing will be conducted on Leap Day, Feb 29.

This is the fourth consecutive year Camp Humphreys has conducted the FMWR Customer Satisfaction Lunar Survey.

“We really want as many people as possible to take this year’s survey,” said FMWR Director Don Claycomb. “With the current economic environment, we know that it may be necessary to make some major changes in FMWR programming and activities.

“We can make the changes on our own or we can make them with your input being considered. It’s really up to the individual Soldier, Civilian and Family Member. The more input we receive from our customers, the better we can make those crucial decisions.”

Seoul Forest offers variety of activities

Consisting of five parks, Seoul Forest is an eco-friendly zone rapidly developing into the premium city-park of Korea – much like Hyde Park in London and Central Park in New York.

Seoul Forest includes a Cultural Art Park, an Ecological Forest, a Study Field, a Wetlands Ecological Field and the Han River Waterside Park. Once a royal hunting ground reserved for kings, Seoul Forest now offers a variety of year-round activities for nature-loving individuals and Families.

Most of Seoul Forest is free, although there is a modest charge for parking and things like food for the deer. There is also a nice riverside restaurant and lounge. The Forest also includes bike paths, with both individual and tandem bikes for rent at the Visitor’s Center.

Wheelchairs and strollers are also available for rent at the Visitor’s Center.

You can drive to Seoul Forest (see map to right), take Seoul Subway Line 2 to the Tiukseom Station or take any of the following buses – 2014, 2412, 2413 or 2224.

Taebaek Snow Festival January 27 – February 5

The Taebaek Snow Festival is one of the biggest in Korea and includes a fantastic display of Snow & Ice Sculptures, a Polar Bear Run, Ice Wall Climbing, a Snowman Festival, Skiing, Snowboarding & Sledding

A number of other interactive programs such as a snow sculpture competition for university students,

Dr. Fish foot bath, snow sledding, dog sled rides and other fun games will be held during the festival period. The festival full of fun and excitement will be the best winter destination providing worthwhile memories for

Ice Skating in Seoul is cheap

Korea sits atop the figure skating world with Kim Yu-Na the 2010 Olympic champion in Ladies' Singles, the 2009 World champion, the 2009 Four Continents champion, a three-time (2006–2007, 2007–2008, 2009–2010) Grand Prix Final champion, the 2006 World Junior champion, the 2005–2006 Junior Grand Prix Final champion and a four-time (2002–2005) South Korean national champion.

Kim is the first female skater to win the Olympic Games, the World Championships, the Four Continents Championships and the Grand Prix Final.

Largely because of Kim’s popularity, skating rivals skiing and ice fishing as the country’s top winter sport.

A great example of that popularity is the Outdoor Rink in Seoul Plaza in downtown Seoul.

Scheduled to remain open through Feb 12, the rink offers a pair of skates and skating for an just 1,000 won an hour.

There is room for up to 3,000 skaters, with the rink open from 1000-2200 Sunday-Thursday and 1000-2300 Friday, Saturday and Korean Holidays. Call 02-1330 for information

Seoul’s No 1 attraction?

There are many great things to see in Seoul, but what do you think is the No. 1 attraction?

According to a survey conducted by the Seoul Metropolitan Office , the most popular destination for foreign tourists in Seoul is Namsan Seoul Tower, followed by Myeongdong and Gyeongbokgung Palace.

Namsan Seoul Tower received 16 percent of the vote, and was chosen as Seoul’s Best Attraction for offering breathtaking views of Korea’s capital city.

Meanwhile, Myeongdong, with 13.4 percent of the vote, was widely praised for offering a myriad of shopping and dining facilities, and Gyeongbokgung Palace, with 10.9 percent of the vote, for preserving its history, traditions and architectural beauty.

Almost 2,000 people participated in the survey which was conducted between November 3-20.

Other choices on the list of Seoul’s Best Attractions for Foreign Tourists included Bukchon Hanok Village, Dongdaemun Gate and Seoul Forest.

Winter Fun – Ice Fishing

Korea’s winter weather – especially along the northeast coast – makes for many streams covered in a thick layer of ice ideal for tce fishing.

Here are a couple of established Ice Fishing Festivals scheduled for this month:

Hwacheon Sancheoneo (Mountain Trout) Ice Festival – Jan 7-29 -- Hwacheon Stream & 5 villages in Hwacheon-gun, Gangwon-do Visitors can try out ice fishing, and those who are feeling brave can try to catch mountain trout with their bare hands. There is also an exhibition of ice sculptures that took 20 weeks to prepare. Other activities include Snow/Ice Experience: Ice Sledding, Bobsledding, Ice football, Eolgomiseong (tunnels, slides), Snow Sculptures, Snow Sledding, World Snowman Square, Ice Rink, Ice Train, Snow Train, Cross Country Skiing and Nongmokjangchigi (mini ice hockey).

Inje Icefish Festival – Jan 28-Feb 5 -- Soyangho Lake area. At this spectacular winter festival visitors will be able to try out ice fishing and exciting games such as human bowling on ice, ice soccer and even a tug-of-war on ice.

For those icefish fanatics there will be an icefish eating competition, and visitors can sample the icefish, smelt, for free. Icefish fishing, Icefish sampling, Icefish food experience, snow/ice sledding, ice football game, ice sliding, ice race walking and traditional folk games.

Make sure to dress warm and remember a change of clothes in case you get wet.

Bears Town

A short journey from Seoul, Bears Town has skiing for all abilities and excellent off-slope sports facilities. Accommodation options include the Sheraton Walken Hill Hotel. Special ski lessons are organized for 2 hours each, three times daily for non-Korean guests. The resort offers a Ski Deposit facility - whereby skiers can leave their equipment in secure lockers - for up to 1,000 paris of skis. Bears Town has direct access to 11 individual runs served by 8 ski lifts as well as 57 Snow Cannons. All levels of skier ability, from Beginner to Expert, are well-catered for in Bears Town.

Hyundai Sungwoo

Hyundai Sungwoo resort has direct access to 21 individual runs. Hyundai Sungwoo resort offers good skiing, particularly, for Intermediate skiers.

Jisan

One of the world's newest ski resorts, Jisan opened with three quad chairs in 1996 and now has direct access to 7 runs. The 3 Ski Lifts of Jisan are able to uplift 6,080 skiers or snowboarders per hour, with a wide range of abilities served.

Muju

Muju has seen phenomonal growth since opening in 1990 and is now one of Asia's top destination resorts. Apart from a ludicrous amount of skiing considering Korea's naturally limited vertical, the resort now encompasses a theme park, Korea's largest tennis complex with no less than 108 courts, a lake for water sports, an Arnold Palmer designed 18 hole golf course and country club and many other sporting facilities including horseback and mountain bike riding trails and the huge 742-bedroom Hotel Tirol. Muju also boasts the country's longest ski slope and greatest uplift. It hosted the 1997 Universities Winter Games and has direct access to 30 individual runs served by 16 ski lifts. All levels of skier ability, from Beginner to Expert, are well-catered for in Muju.

Yongpyeong

The largest resort in Korea, located at the foot of the Palwangsan Mountain. An annual snow festival is staged here and there are numerous alternative activities. Dragon Valley is close to the National Parks at Mount Obaesan and Mount Soraksan, as well as Kyomgp'odae Beach. The '98 Ski World Cup and '99 Winter Asian Games were staged here. Yongpyeong has direct access to 41 runs served by 17 ski lifts.All levels of skier ability, from Beginner to Expert, are well-catered for in Yongpyeong. The resort also caters to snowboarders, with a terrain park equipped with rail slides, lamps, quarter pipes and ski cross courses.

Alpensia Ski Resort

Official site of the 2018 Winter Olympics, Alpensia has 6 slopes for skiing and snowboarding. The Alpensia Ski Jumping Stadium is located within the station and will be the location of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2018 Winter Olympics. The Alpensia Resort will be the focus of the outdoor sports of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. Other venues either being built or already open will include the Alpensia Biathlon Centre, Alpensia Nordic Centre for Cross-country skiing and Nordic combined, the Alpensia Sliding Centre for Luge, Bobsleigh and Skeleton as well as the Olympic Village. Yongpyong Ski Resort will be the venue for Alpine Skiing (Slalom, Giant Slalom). After the Olympics, Alpensia Resort will also host the 2018 Winter Paralympics.

Start Lunar New Year with Duk Gook

It’s a good bet that 99.9 percent of all Koreans world-wide will celebrate the Lunar New Year with a bowl of Duk Gook – the traditional Korean New Year’s Day soup. And you can join the parade.

Unlike many Korean dishes, Duk Gook is easy to make, only as spicy as you want it to be and quite tasty, too. You can prepare it in 30 minutes of less. And even the kids will probably like it.

A simple Duk Gook recipe calls for beef stock, some thinly sliced beef, rice cakes, soy sauce, a couple of hard boiled eggs and some green onions and seaweed,

Most of the ingredients are available in the Commissary, including mondu, which can be substituted for rice cakes. “Officially,” the mondu is a different version of Duk Gook. If you want the “real” thing, go to E-Mart and buy the rice cakes.

Add the rice cakes, soy sauce and black pepper to taste to the boiling beef broth and simmer for about 10 minutes. Ladle into individual bowls and add egg stripes, chopped green onions and seaweed for color.

The color of the finished product is important, and it should look like the photo above. You can also use chicken stock and thinly-slice chicken if you prefer. Some areas of Korea use anchovies and fish stock instead.

Whichever way you go, you will welcome the Lunar New Year in the traditional Korean way.

Spring Sports are just around the corner, with registration for Youth Baseball and Girl’s Softball scheduled for Feb 1-29.

Meanwhile, Youth Coaches are needed.

Coaches must undergo a background check and training, so it’s important to recruit coaches before players since the number of coaches determines the number of teams in many age groups.

No experience is necessary, and assistant as well as head coaches are needed. Camp Humphreys offers baseball to youngsters 3-18, while there is also a special girl’s softball program for youngsters 9-18.

If you’re interested, please register at Parent Central in the Youth Center. You can contact Youth Sports for more information.

Meanwhile, Youth Basketball is under way at the Youth Center and Zoeckler Gymnasium. Contact Youth Sports for updated schedules.
