Career Resource Management CenterNew Transition Readiness Seminar (TRS)

Transition Assistance Management Program (TAMP) has been renovated and integrated into the life-cycle of a Marine from recruitment through separation or retirement and through Veteran Marine status. This five-day Transition Readiness Seminar (TRS) includes two days of mandatory standardized core curriculum with four pathways:

• University/College• Vocational/Technical training• Employment• Entrepreneurial Endeavors

In this new program, a Marine will choose the pathway that best meets his or her future goals. These goals are determined by individuals and by coun-seling from their Career Planner on each pathway.

TRS is designed to give the Marines ownership of their transition from the Marine Corps and to provide them with resources and opportunities to make informed decisions when transitioning to the civilian sector.

June is Men’s Health Month

Heart Disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in the U.S.. Try the following tips to lower your risk of heart disease:

1. Don’t smoke. Avoid secondhand smoke.2. Keep your blood pressure below 120/80.3. Watch your cholesterol. An LDL (bad

cholesterol) score less than 100 is best. 4. Exercise at least 30 minutes most days of

the week. You can do 10 minutes at a time if you want.

5. Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and veg-etables each day.

6. Eat less fat, especially saturated fats, and avoid trans fats all together.

7. Ask your doctor about taking low-dose aspirin.

8. Learn how to manage stress.9. Maintain a healthy weight

Cancer of the Testicles

Cancer of the testicles is not common. It usually strikes men 15-34 years old.

Finding it early

See your doctor if your testicles:

• Have painless swelling• Have a hard lump, pea-sized or larger• Feel ‘heavy’• Never appear (descended)

Check your testicles every month. Have your doctor show you how.

Take charge of your health, safety and pre-venting disease. Hospitals, universities, and government agencies have good informa-tion. If you are not sure, ASK.

Men’s Health Panel19 June | 1100-1300The Commissary, MCRD Parris Island

About Veteran’s Nursing Homes

The service that veterans provide for us is immeasurable. In gratitude to their personal dedication and sacrifice, The United States Department of Veterans Affairs offers nurs-ing home care for veterans who meet cer-tain criteria. They do this by contracting with private nursing homes, sponsoring VA (Vet-erans Affairs) community living centers, and even running special state veteran’s nursing homes. This varies state-by state. Read on if one of these options might be available to you or your loved one.

Finding Nursing Home Care for Veterans

All of the normal long-term selection and nursing home payment options are avail-able to veterans, including Medicare, Medic-aid and long-term care insurance. But unlike typical senior citizens, elderly veterans have access to additional long-term care options through their local VA office.

As with many VA services, you may have to go through a detailed eligibility process or join a waiting list to gain access, so if you choose to pursue one of the following vet-eran’s nursing home options, plan to apply as early as possible.

VA Community Living Centers

Community living centers are VA-run facili-ties that provide an array of short stay (less than 90 days) and long stay (91 days or more) services. They include but are not limited to skilled nursing, respite care, rehabilitation, hospice, and maintenance care for veterans awaiting placement in the community. They are usually located in or near VA hospitals or medical centers. Short stay services are available for veterans who are enrolled in VA health care and require CLC services. Long stay services are available for enrolled veter-ans who need nursing home care for life or for an extended period of time for a service-connected disability and those rated 60 per-cent service-connected and unemployable; or veterans who have a 70 percent or greater service-connected disability. All others are based on available resources.

State Veteran’s Nursing Homes

State homes are owned and operated by the states. VA pays a portion of the per diem if the state meets VA standards. States estab-lish eligibility criteria and determine services

More online under the “Retired Activities” tab at http://mccs-sc.comMCCS Retired Activities on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/BeaufortRAO

offered for short and long-term care. Special-ized services offered are dependent upon the capability of the home to provide them. Sometimes up to 25 percent of beds in state veterans nursing homes are available to fam-ily members of vets.

Community Nursing Home Program

VA maintains contracts with community nursing homes through every VA medical center. The program is designed to meet the needs of veterans who require long-term nursing home care in their own community, close to their families.

Eligibility

The general admission criteria for nursing home placement requires that a resident must be medically stable, i.e. not acutely ill, have sufficient functional deficits to require inpatient nursing home care, and be as-sessed by an appropriate medical provider to be in need of institutional nursing home care. In addition, the veteran must meet the required VA eligibility criteria for nurs-ing home care or the contract nursing home program and the eligibility criteria for the specific state veterans’ home. For VA nursing home care, veterans may be subject to a co-payment depending on their financial status. VA social workers can help explain eligibility and copayment requirements.

Long –Term Care Services

In addition to nursing home care, VA offers a variety of other long-term care services di-rectly or by contract with community-based agencies. Such services include adult day health care, inpatient or outpatient respite care, inpatient or outpatient geriatric evalu-ation and management, hospice and pal-liative care, and home based primary care. Veterans receiving these services may be subject to a copayment.

Locate VA-Contracted Nursing Homes Near You

Nursing homes for veterans provide a service to men and women who gave themselves for our nation’s safety. If your loved one is a veteran, you’ll do well to look into veteran’s nursing home options for help subsidizing or even funding your loved one’s long term care. If you’re looking for a privately-owned nursing home that contracts with the VA, just ask one of their expert elder care advisors for a complimentary, personalized list of affili-ated facilities near you.

LIBRARYNew Titles Dream New Dreams: Reimagining My Life Af-ter Loss by Jai Pausch. Pausch, widow of Randy Pausch, author of ‘The Last Lecture,’ traces her experiences following her husband’s diagnosis, the struggles she faces as a mother and care-giver, and all the emotions that go with watch-ing your husband slowly die while dealing with finances and the medical learning curve. She also shares hard-learned knowledge for others who have lost, or are in the process of losing, a loved one.

Inquisitor’s Key by Jefferson Bass. Miranda is helping with a dig in France when she discovers a chest inscribed with the claim that the bones of Jesus of Nazareth are inside. Now, she and her boss, Dr. Bill Brockton, are working to prove or refute the claim. Their findings trigger a tug of war between anthropologists, the Vatican, and a deadly zealot who wants the bones for his own ominous purposes. Body Farm series.

Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris. Eric North-man needs help from Sookie to solve the death of a woman whose body was found in his front yard. Although he had just drunk the woman’s blood, he insisted she was still alive when last he saw her. Sookie soon discovers that the dead woman’s fate has just as much to do with her as it does Eric. Sookie Stackhouse series.

The Wind through the Keyhole by Stephen King. This story within a story within a story finds Mid-world gunslinger Roland Deschain in his early days in the year following his mother’s death. He is investigating evidence of a murder-ous shape-shifter, a ‘skin-man,’ and comes upon Bill, a boy who is the sole surviving witness to the beast’s most recent slaughter. Dark Tower series.

The Witness by Nora Roberts. Plagued by a controlling mother, Elizabeth let loose one night, drinking at a nightclub and letting a strange man’s seductive accent lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive. The night ended in bloodshed and changed her life forever. Twelve years later, on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks, the town’s police chief is intrigued by a secretive woman who calls herself Abigail.

The Innocent by David Baldacci. No matter what precautions are taken, America has en-emies that can’t always be stopped. When that happens, Will Robie, a freelance hit man, is called upon. But now, after stepping in to rescue a wayward teen girl who doesn’t know where her parents are, he may have made a big mistake-- a mistake that could result in the loss of both of their lives.

Stay Close by Harlan Coben. Nobody’s happy. Megan constantly revisits a cold case involving a missing family. Her husband, Ray, is stuck in

tion Event will be held for children ages 5 and up. Finally on 30 June, Kathy Williams will lead a Nutrition Class for all adults. All three pro-grams will be held at the Air Station Library and will begin at 1400.

There is also a serious side to summer read-ing. Research has shown that reading over the summer prevents reading loss. Many chil-dren are required to read a specific number of books from their summer reading list. The library makes every effort to carry the required books each year.

Studies also indicate that students who read recreationally out preform those who don’t. Students read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests. Our libraries are committed to supporting and en-couraging lifelong learning and educational enrichment for all military families. There are extensive teen and children’s areas in each li-brary.

Registration continues through 22 June. To learn more about the summer reading pro-gram at the libraries please call 228-6131/1672 or email [email protected]. You may also find additional information on our web-site and Facebook pages.

a dead-end job and wants out. The past comes back with biting clarity, and as events begin to spiral out of control, Megan and Ray learn that temptation still waits ... if they only choose to re-claim the past.

Behavioral Health

As the summer months allow, we all look forward to spending some quality time with family and friends. Summertime pro-vides us with a much needed vacation, as many of us take advantage of some time away from our work and other responsi-bilities. While most of us benefit from some “unplugged time”, there are those among us who are at risk of over indulging and causing serious consequences for them-selves and others. For the masses alcohol is a benign social substance, that when used responsibly, is of no consequence. For those who are uniquely vulnerable for a variety of reasons, alcohol can become a dangerous intoxicant, which can lead to serious medi-cal, social and behavioral outcomes. The risk factors that can lead one to abuse alco-hol are biological, mental and social.

A family history of alcohol related problems is a risk factor that is often seen as a bio-logical marker that can place an individual in a more vulnerable position with alcohol. Another manifestation of this biological marker is the phenomenon of tolerance. Tolerance is the body’s unique response to

alcohol. This unique response is seen when a person can drink larger and larger quan-tities of alcohol, yet, is less sensitive to the impairment that the mind is experiencing. The individual is tricked by tolerance, while 2-3 standard drinks produce an effect; it now takes 4-6 standard drinks to produce the same effect.

Other risk factors that can accompany the biological risk factors can be seen in per-ception and attitude of the drinker. If one believes “everyone is drinking heavily”, the tendency to follow that perception is heightened. The reality is that the social mores of a heavy drinking group do not necessarily represent the larger masses. The belief systems associated with alcohol and socializing can dictate how a person may choose to use alcohol.

During these summer months it’s important to employ safe low risk guidelines when us-ing alcohol. Some of those include but are not limited to:

(1) Never drink on an empty stomach(2) Never drink while taking medication.(3) Never drink and drive.(4) Never drink when sleep deprived.(5) Always use the DD Program(6) Avoid binge drinking.

Apprenticeship = Civilian Career in Your Military Career Field

An E-5 avionics electrician in Whidby Island, Washington was said to have turned his schooling and military work into a $30+ per hour job with a department of labor apprenticeship certificate of completion (journeyman status). His E-8, who had taught at the MOS school and had 20 years in service, was offered about $15 per hour with the same company because he did not have his certificate. Whose shoes do you want to be in when you complete your military career?

Military careers can last over 30 years or less than 6, and then most people look for a civilian career. The Uniform Services Military Apprenticeship Program takes one or more years to complete and gives the Active Duty Military Member a Certificate of Journeyman Status from the Department of Labor. In most cases it doesn’t require additional training or work. If you might want to do the military job you are doing now in the civilian community after you get out, this program will help you get that job – possibly at higher pay – when you are ready to transition. Don’t wait until your last few months in service to prepare

for your future. For more information, go to https://usmap.cnet.navy.mil/ or contact your local Education Services Office by calling MCAS Beaufort at 228-7484 and MCRD/ERR Parris Island at 228-2152.
