Hanoi, city of the rising dragon, has a history stretching back for athousand years. All significant turning points in Vietnam’s history haveleft their mark on the city. Hanoi has kept its soul. Visitors sense it aswell, the marked contrast to other Southeast Asian cities with theirfreeways and concrete jungles, marvelling at Hanoi’s many squares andsmall parks, the tree-lined avenues with their leafy canopies, thebustling neighbourhoods and the endless stream of motorbikes. Hanoi’sgrowth and economic development is at a crossroads, though. How canHanoi position itself as a world-class city in global competition withoutgiving up its rich cultural and urban-architectural heritage? The city hasfurther to live up to the demands of the higher living standards of itscitizens; has to cope with the constant migration of the rural populationto the city; overcome its traffic problems and, last but not least,provide an attractive location for international investors andknowledge-based industries. The challenge for Hanoi is to build on itsuniqueness under global competition, instead of just falling back on it.

Michael Waibel is a senior researcher and project leader in urbanismat the Department for Geography of the University of Hamburg. Inearly 2014, he has already published the highly successful photo book“TP. Hồ Chí Minh: MEGA City” together Henning Hilbert fromVietnamese-German University (VGU).

The second book of this series introducing now about Hanoi’s recenturban development has an attractive coffee table book format and hasbeen published in three languages, in Vietnamese, German andEnglish. It contains over 600 photos illustrating the multi-facetted andvibrant city from a variety of perspectives – from bird’s eye views to

In addition to the visual illustrations, thispublication has assembled some essays by Hanoi residents who sharetheir personal perspective and reflect diverse, multigenerational pointsof view. This may contribute to a comprehensive picture of this city.The whole publication is targeting a wide audience. The work is basedon many years of academic work stretching back till the late 1990s.Among other it got funded by the German National Ministry ofEducation and Research (BMBF) within the initiative “Research forSustainable Megacities of Tomorrow” . Further, a series ofconferences in cooperation with the Goethe Institute have beenorganized, which dealt with urban sustainability issues, green housing,green growth or most recently with creative hubs and urbandevelopment.

During the launching event the editor Michael Waibel will highlight therationale behind the photo book “Hà Nội: CAPITAL City“. FurtherHenning Hilbert will introduce about the 2nd edition of the photo book“TP. Hồ Chí Minh: MEGA City”. A more academic input will be providedby Dr. Hoang Manh Nguyen, Director of the Institute of TropicalArchitecture, Hanoi University of Architecture. He will give a talk aboutchallenges of sustainable urban development in Vietnam.

Both photo books can be purchased after the talk, and there will be twocomplimentary copies of each book disbursed to the lucky winners of adraw. Last but not least, a series of select photos illustrating the recenturban development of Vietnam’s capital city will be exhibited.

Hà Nội, Thăng Long-thành phố rồng bay lên-đã có hơn một ngàn nămtuổi. Ở Hà Nội có thể tìm thấy dấu ấn về mọi giai đoạn quan trọngtrong lịch sử Việt Nam còn lưu lại. Hà Nội thể hiện rõ những đặc trưngcủa riêng mình. Điều này mỗi khách thăm đều cảm nhận rõ khi so sánhvới các thành phố lớn khác ở Đông Nam Á với đường cao tốc nội đô vànhững khoảng bê tông xám nặng nề thì Hà Nội làm ta ngạc nhiên vớinhiều quảng trường và công viên nhỏ, các đại lộ rợp bóng cây, nhữngkhu dân cư sống động và dòng xe máy bất tận. Về mặt phát triển kinhtế và đô thị, Hà Nội đang đứng ở ngã ba đường. Làm thế nào để mộtthành phố hiện đại như Hà Nội xác định được vị trí của mình trong dòngchảy toàn cầu nếu không giữ gìn những di sản văn hóa và kiến trúcphong phú của mình? Hà Nội phải đáp ứng nhu cầu về nhà ở ngày càngcao của cư dân, Hà Nội cũng phải cáng đáng dòng chảy di dân từ cáctình lân cận về ngày càng nhiều, rồi đối mặt với những thách thức ngàycàng gia tăng của giao thông đô thị, rồi còn phải hấp dẫn nhà đầu tưnước ngoài, phát triển công nghiệp và dịch vụ tri thức… Hà Nội đangđứng trước vô vàn thách thức trong công cuộc toàn cầu hóa nhưng phảigiữ được bản sắc riêng của mình chứ không phải đơn giản là cuộc chạyđua giữa được và mất.

Ấn phẩm thứ hai của sê ri này được xuất bản với khổ lớn cùng ba thứtiếng (Đức, Việt và Anh) với trên 600 bức ảnh minh họa phản ánh đờisống muôn mặt của Hà Nội đang phát triển – với góc nhìn so sánh cũngnhư trong hình dung của cư dân. Ngoài ra, ngoài các hình ảnh còn cócác bài viết của một số cư dân thành phố. Quan điểm cá nhân của họvẽ nên một bức tranh đa dạng về thành phố, nhưng nếu phố hợp vớinhau, ta sẽ có bức tranh tổng thể về thành phố thủ đô. Cuốn sách nàysẽ đáp ứng mong muốn của số đông độc giả quan tâm đến vấn đề pháttriển đô thị. Cả hai ấn phẩm này là kết quả của nhiều năm nghiên cứukhoa học tại Việt Nam từ những năm 90 của thế kỉ trước, được hỗ trợchính bởi Bộ giáo dục và nghiên cứu của CHLB Đức (BMBF) trong khuônkhổ sáng kiến „Nghiên cứu vì sự phát triển bền vững của các đại đô thịtrong tương lai“ cũng như kết quả của nhiều hội thảo hợp tác cùng ViệnGoethe. Ngoài ra, để có thể được xuất bản, cuốn sách còn nhận đượcsự hỗ trợ, giúp đỡ của nhiều đối tác, doanh nghiệp và tổ chức khác.

Trong buổi giới thiệu sách, Chủ biên TS. Michael Waibel sẽ có diễn giảithêm về cuốn sách “Hà Nội: CAPITAL City“ cũng như những ý tưởng khilàm cuốn sách. Ngoài ra, Henning Hilbert sẽ giới thiệu cuốn sách ảnh“TP. Hồ Chí Minh: MEGA City” mới được tái bản. Đồng thời, TS. HoàngMạnh Nguyên, Viện trưởng Viện Kiến trúc Nhiệt đới thuộc trường Đạihọc Kiến trúc Hà Nội sẽ có tham luận khoa học về những thách thức đốivới phát triển đô thị bền vững tại Việt Nam.

Dr. Michael Waibel forscht, lehrt und leitet Projekte zurStadtentwicklung am Institut für Geographie der Universität Hamburg.Anfang 2014 hat er bereits zusammen mit Henning Hilbert von derVietnamesisch-Deutschen Universität (VGU) das Fotobuch “TP. Die nunmehr zweite Publikation dieser Serie in einem attraktiven CoffeeTable Book-Format veröffentlicht in drei Sprachen (deutsch, englischund vietnamesisch) illustriert auf über 600 Bildern die vielseitigenFacetten von Hanois jüngerer Stadtentwicklung - aus derVogelperspektive ebenso wie in Porträts ihrer Bewohner. Zusätzlich zuden visuellen Eindrücken enthält diese Publikation einige Essays vonEinwohnern Hanois. Ihre persönlichen Ansichten zeichnen einvielfältiges, aber in der Gesamtschau vielleicht auch ein vollständigesBild der Hauptstadt. Es soll ein breites, interessiertes Publikumangesprochen werden. Beide Publikationen gründen sich auf viele Jahrewissenschaftlicher Arbeit in Vietnam seit den späten 1990er Jahren,u.a. gefördert durch das deutsche Bildungs- undForschungsministerium (BMBF) im Rahmen der Initiative „Forschungfür die nachhaltige Entwicklung der Megastädte von Morgen“ ,sowie auf mehrere Konferenzen in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Goethe-Institut. Ermöglicht wurde die Publikation durch eine Reihe vonPartnern, Firmen und Institutionen.

Während der Präsentationsveranstaltung erläutert der Herausgeber Dr.Michael Waibel die Publikation “Hà Nội: CAPITAL City“ und dieMotivation dahinter. Darüber hinaus stellt Henning Hilbert die zweiteaktualisierte Auflage des Bildbandes “TP. Hồ Chí Minh: MEGA City” vor.Einen eher wissenschaftlicheren Input gibt hingegen Dr. Hoang ManhNguyen, Direktor des Instituts für Tropische Architektur an derUniversität für Architektur in Hanoi, der über Herausforderungen fürnachhaltige Stadtentwicklung in Vietnam vortragen wird.

Beide Bücher können am Ende der Veranstaltung käuflich erworbenwerden, außerdem werden je zwei Exemplare verlost – mit etwas Glückkönnen Sie also Ihr persönliches Exemplar mit nach Hause nehmen.Auch werden einige ausgewählte Fotos, welche die jüngereStadtentwicklung von Hanoi illustrieren, gezeigt.
