    FOREWORD.

Students of Tamil grammar, especially candi-dates preparing for public examinations will find inthis excellent "Hand-book" a great deal of veryuseful information. The material is well chosen, the exposition is lucid and the arrangement clearand logical. Students who have neither the timenor the aptitude to peruse classical treatises such asPavananthi's " Nannool ", Viramamuniver's "Ton-nool Vilakkam", and the "Ilakkana Churukkam"of Arumuga Navalar will find in this book just thatamount of scientific grammar necessary for gainingan insight into the structure of the Tamil language. On pedagogical grounds present-day teachers maydesire to alter the order of treatment preferring todeal with sentences and the function of words beforetaking up the classification of letters and rules ofeuphony, for modern educational practice laysgreat stress on the study of the living language asdistinct from the study of formal grammar. Butneither students nor teachers will find in this bookmuch that they can safely omit. The book is writ-ten in English, a feature not very welcome to theeyes of a true lover of Tamil, but so long as BritishUniversities and other examining bodies insist up-on testing a knowledge of Tamil by means of quest-ion papers framed in English, students, teachersand authors of text-books have no other course butto follow the line of least resistance. The properrendering of grammatical terms and forms of usagefrom one language into another is by no means an

easy task. Want of suitable terms often compelone to accept an approximately equal term where anidentically correct term cannot be had. The truthof this observation is borne out within the pagesof this book itself where the author uses the word"adjective" to do service for uoiaru'-9-- (page 13)Lrfi.i=Qs:rril> (p. 48) and ~pS!uyUQUflJQff. i=8 ' t.D (p. 121)three distinctly different terms for Tamil grammarians. The book satisfies a real need and I haveno hesitation in recommending it to students andteachers.

    A FEW APPRECIATIONS.

An appreciative preface over the signature of so emi-nent a scholar as Swami Vipulananda is sufficient testi-mony to the value of this handbook on Tamil grammar.Though written mainly with an eye to the examinationrequirements of students, it may even prove the meansof sending back to the study of their grammar the Tamilswhose progress in English has out-stripped the knowledgeof their own language. ~Ceylon Obserrer, 1,9,29.

' " '" '"The arrangement of the book is very clear and logicaland the author's exposition lucid. The book is not inten-ded to supplant the study of the classical treatises on thesubject such as the "Nanool" and "Thonnool Vilakkam,"which requires time. and much aptitude. It can safely bea guide to higher study and students and teachers will findit eminently useful. ~Daily News, 9,10,29.

'" * '"The need for a Tamil grammar to meet the require, ments of the E. S. L. C., Cambridge Local and LondonMatriculation Examinations was long felt. Civil Servantswill find in this a book that will teach them withoutthe aid of a tutor for their Departmental Examinations. We congratulate the author and recommend the book tostudents and teachers. +-The Chronicle, 17,7,29.

and Civil Servants' 1st. and 2nd. Examinations, will findin this excellent "Hand book' a great deal of useful in,formation. -The Hindu Organ, 18,8,29. CONTENTS.* * i~

The book simplifies the grammatical knowledge rcquir-ed and expresses it in plain and clear language and thusfacilitates the study of a subject that is regarded as difficultand irksome by many a student. The variety of typogra-phy will also prove a valuable additional help in masteringthe contents of these pages. We can recommend this bookwithout reserve to those for whom it was primarily in,tended. -The Catholic Guardian, 17,8,29.
