First graders are enriching their artistic skills working with a local artist and teacher learning to draw the human figure. I look forward to their wonder-ful future book illustrations. Hanby Book Fair Diner: All You Can Read!

February 16-19, 2010

Everyone loves to go to a buffet din-

ner where you can have all you

want to eat - why not think about

coming to the Hanby Book Fair

Diner where you can get all you can read?? We offer a wide menu of

books from picture books, easy

reading, and chapter books, all the

way to middle school books - some-

thing that will appeal to everyone's

taste in reading - and at a low, af-

fordable price!

This year, we will also be offering

dessert at the Book Fair Diner on

Wednesday, February 18, compli-

ments of the Hanby PTA. Invita-

tions will be coming home for stu-

dents to invite someone "grand" to join them for lunch at Hanby and

then stay for some special Book Fair

shopping - and get cookies to

munch on while you shop. Stu-

dents can invite a grandparent, a

parent, an older sibling - anyone

who is special to them.

Those individuals who join a stu-

dent for lunch will need to provide

their own lunch, but the PTA will

provide the dessert when the stu-

dents bring their "grand" person to

the Book Fair. Normal lunch and

recess times will be used for this

grand event.

All proceeds from the Book Fair di-

rectly benefit Hanby students in a

variety of ways - by providing trans-

portation to and from field trips,

special programs such as Invention Convention, Holly's Harps, and Bal-

letMet, gym, art, and classroom

supplies, as well as library books.

So - come for lunch and stay for

dessert - as well as some delicious

books for reading!

entry.

We are looking for pictures of

things that make Hanby spe-

Hanby Fourth Graders Explore History

While studying the European

explorers and the early settle-

ments of North America, Hanby

4th Graders in Mrs. Powell’s

class create scenes from

History and act out what happened long ago. Scenes

include the arrival of

Europeans in North America

and disputes over land and

trade among the Europeans

and Native Americans.

Assigned parts include groups

of English, Spanish, Dutch,

French, and Native Americans

as well as, explorers Samuel de Champlain, Adrien Jolliet,

Robert LaSalle, and

La Demoiselle among others.

Missing a Lunch Box?

There are currently 22 lunch

boxes in the Lost & Found area.

If you are missing a lunch box,

please have your child check

Lost & Found.

Outstanding lunch loans also

need to be repaid ASAP. The

fund is running very low.

Thanks for your cooperation,

and if you have any questions

please call the Hanby office at

707-7100.

Support our Hanby Bowling

Teams with your Pledge!

Hanby will have two staff teams

participating in this year’s

Community Bowl-a-thon to be held

on February 27th. Funds raised from

this event will support the

Westerville Education Foundation,

the Westerville Symphony, and the

Westerville Chamber Foundation.

Please support our Hanby Staff

& educational grants which benefit

our kids and the arts with a

donation to this worthwhile

cause! Checks may be made pay-able to the Westerville Community

Bowl-a-thon and may be turned in

to the office at school or to a

bowling team member.

The Westerville Education

Foundation is an independent,

volunteer, non-profit organization.

The Foundation was founded in

1993 with the sole purpose of

enhancing the education of our

students by promoting educational

initiatives undertaken by employees

in the district. Tax-deductible

contributions received by the Foun-

dation fund grants to teachers to

enable them to implement their

initiatives in the classroom. Grants

are also available to other district

employees to support innovative

activities or programming.

GRANTS The Foundation encourages

employee innovation by awarding

grants to creative educational

programs for which public funds are

unavailable. Teachers at all grade levels and other district employees

complete a

detailed ap-

plication and

grants are

awarded at

the begin-

ning of each

fall and

spring term.

Help for Haiti

One of our 4th grade student coun-

cil members, Aidan Tansey, has

called attention to the great need for

hygiene kits as part of the disaster

relief effort for Haiti. Student Coun-

cil, in collaboration with Church World Service, is asking for Hanby’s

help in putting together hygiene kits

to help the Haitian people at this

time of need.

Student Council will assemble each

hygiene kit which should include

one washcloth, one hand towel, one

comb, one nail clipper, one bar of

soap, one toothbrush, and six band-

aids. Each grade level will be re-

sponsible for one of the necessary

items:

First Grade: Band-aids (can be

a small box or bring six band

aids)

Second Grade: Bars of soap

(bath size in wrapper)

Third Grade: Toothbrushes (in

original packaging)

Fourth Grade Magnet: Nail

Clippers (no metal files or emery

boards)

Fourth Grade Gifted: Combs

5th Grade Class Art Project

The Fifth graders are going to be making

a project for the arts auction using

recycled plastic but it is going to take

tons of materials.

We are still in need of:

Plastic containers, cups, plates, take

out containers, etc. of various colors.

We need ones where the label can be re-

moved so there is no writing on the bottle

or that large parts of plastic can be cut

out. We will be melting and molding the

plastic into various

shapes.

We can use LOTS of

water bottles, 2-liter bottles, any-

thing clear plastic.

No milk jugs please. Please rinse out

the plastic before sending it in.

Please mark the items to the attention

of Arts Auction, Fifth Grade project.

Kids-Only Donations

Needed for the Arts Auc-

tion

Attention all Hanby Students! The Arts Auction Committee needs you

to donate your new or gently-used

toys, games, movies, jewelry, craft

or novelty items for the Kids-Only

Raffle at the 2010 Hanby Arts Auc-

tion!

A few guidelines to follow:

Donate items you think other

kids would want to have!

Items should be age-

appropriate (kindergarten –

middle school).

Please do not donate stuffed

animals, VHS tapes, or baby/

toddler toys.

Please bring in your donations to

the Hanby Office and drop them off

in the bin marked “Kids-Only Auc-

tion.” Make sure you leave a note

with the donation with your

name, grade and teacher.

For each item donated by a student,

that student will receive a free raffle

ticket to be used at the Art Auction.

There is a limit of 25 tickets per

student.

The class with the most donations

will receive 5 raffle tickets per stu-

dent.

Hanby Arts Auction

News!

Arts Auction preparation is starting

to kick into high gear! Donations are

coming in and the excitement is starting to build!

We need lots of help to get ready for

this event and will even need more

help the day of the event.

How can you help?

1) Solicitors: We still would love to

get more donations and/or ads. If

you are outgoing, or just well con-

nected, we can use your help getting

great donations. We even have a list

for you of businesses to seek dona-tions or advertisement from.

2) Event Sponsors: Another great

way to get involved is to become a

sponsor. We are looking for personal

and business sponsors. Here is a list

of available sponsorships.

Event Program Sponsor - $25

half page ad (4 1/4" x 5 1/2") or

$50 full page ad (8 1/2" x 5 1/2")

Auction Donor - We will be

happy to accept gift cards, good

or services. If you want to per-

sonally donate a gift card, why

not buy it through Scrip and

then Hanby benefits twice.

Other - We have other sponsor-

ships available (sponsorships of

raffle tickets, bidder cards, food

court, etc.) and would be happy

to discuss those options with

interested businesses.

All business sponsors and donors will also have their logo/business

information on our arts auction web-

site along with a link the the busi-

ness' website. They will also be

noted in our program as well.

Becoming a Sponsor is a great and

inexpensive advertisement for your

business.

A Personal Sponsor is a great way for

your generous spirit to be shown. It

is easy and painless and it is a win-

win situations for everyone involved.

3) Set - Up Volunteers: Volunteers

to help with set-up on Friday, March

19th anytime between 2 - 9 p.m.

4) Day of the event volunteer: We

are going to need LOTS of people to help the day of the event. On aver-

age, we probably need 75 volunteers

throughout the day. If we all help

out, then we can get the work done

and still have time to enjoy the auc-

tion activities. Some of the positions

that we will need filled are registra-

tion workers, check-out workers,

runners, food court helpers, data

entry entry, raffle sales, someone to

work reverse raffle board and silent

auction closers.

5) High school volunteers in need of community service hours. We

would love to help high school stu-

dents get their community service

hours by helping us on the Friday

before the event or the day of the

event.

Keep your eye out on

www.hanbyarts.com for more in-

formation and to see some of the

donations that we have received.

Healthy News from the

Hanby Clinic

The following is recommended by the ADA for good oral hygiene:

Brush your teeth twice a day with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. Replace your toothbrush

every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t do a good

job of cleaning your teeth.

Clean between teeth daily with floss or an inter-dental cleaner. Decay-causing bacteria still linger

between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. This helps remove plaque and food particles

from between the teeth and under the gum line.

Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.

Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.

February is Children’s Dental Health Month:

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry has recommended that the first oral

exam be performed before the child is 12 months of age. This should begin a life-

time of regular dental check-ups and preventive education.

Saliva is necessary to cleanse the mouth and remove particles that can contribute to bad breath. Dry mouth can

be caused by certain medications, salivary gland problems or a habit of breathing through the mouth. If you have

problems with dry mouth, increase your fluid intake and consult with your dentist.

Halitosis can be the result of poor hygiene. Careful brushing, flossing and tongue brushing or gentle scraping can

eliminate most bad breath. Other causes might include post-nasal drip, sinusitis, gastroesphageal reflux,

pharyngitis or oro-pharyngeal infections.

Chronic tooth pain makes for a poor student. As a result of limited access to routine dental care, children with

chronic dental decay can suffer from sleeplessness, a limited attention span

and absenteeism.

Mouth guards are not just for guarding teeth. An athlete who incurs a sharp blow to the chin might suffer a con-

cussion, but can be protected by a fitted mouth guard.

Drama Club

News

What an exciting time in

Drama Club! The mem-

bers have been given

their roles and are very

excited to start doing scene work. Otterbein

College has been able to provide some theatre

students to help out, too. We are performing

"Wizard of Oz" and the dates of the perform-

ance will be forthcoming. Also, the members are primarily responsible for their costumes

and information will be sent out to each mem-

ber regarding what they should wear or pro-

vide. There are a lot of things needed for do-

nation to complete the sets and props, so

keep checking the Hanby Yahoo page for up-

dates. We are always looking for volunteers to

help with the kids, build items for sets, sew

costumes, etc., etc. Thanks again for allowing

your kids to be in Drama Club and for their

enthusiasm.

Club 61 - Good Health

Challenge

In December, all Hanby stu-

dents were given the opportu-nity to participate in the Co-

lumbus Blue Jackets „Club 61

Good Health Challenge‟. Cap-

tain #61 Rick Nash and the Co-

lumbus Dispatch Newspapers

in Education program devel-

oped the Challenge to encour-

age kids throughout Columbus

to make daily choices for their

health in the hopes of creating

new healthy habits. This pro-

gram was a great way to rein-

force the Wellness Committee’s

goal: offering good health edu-cation and activities to the

Hanby community in or-

der to raise wellness

awareness and to sup-

port the achievement of

personal wellness goals.

Students were given a

“healthy habits score-

card” to log two healthy

choices they made each

day for a month. All en-

tries were submitted to

the Colum-

bus Blue

Jackets and

28 of our

students

each received 2 tickets to a

tion and a 61 Club t-shirt!

Hanby was entered in a contest

to host Rick Nash at our school

but the lucky winner of the

captain’s school visit was Im-

The Wellness Committee would

like to thank all of the students

that participated and for par-

ents encouraging their kids to

establish a great healthy life-

style!

Hanby Italian Dinner

This event will be open only to Hanby families.

More details will be coming home in a few weeks, so please keep an eye

out for Friday Folders so that you won't miss the opportunity for this fun

family event.

As a side note, this will take the place of Spring Fling this year.
