Happy Spring Hanby Families and Friends, It seems hard to believe that we are celebrating spring already! The winter passed by and went out like a lamb, just in time for spring break. I hope you find time to relax with your family and friends and enjoy the won- derful sunshine we have be having! April will be a very busy month for Hanby families. If you stop in the office you will see a collection of wonderful donations that will be a part of our art auction!! Please join us on April 14 from 2-5 and support Hanby programs by purchasing some wonder- ful arts related items in our auction. The auction is one of the major fund raisers that pays for the outstanding additional enrichment activi- ties that promote integrated learning and community ex- periences for your children. Towards the end of April students in grades 3-5 will participate in statewide test- ing. It is important that you support your children during that time providing opportu- nities for rest and insuring them of their suc- cesses. We want all our students to feel success and know that doing their best is enough! Student safety is very impor- tant to us at Hanby. You can assist us in these efforts by not allowing your children to wait in or near the bank parking lot for pick up after school. We cannot provide supervision in this area and the traffic that moves through the parking lot is not safe for our students. Please follow the drop off and pick up procedures outlined in the handbook to support the school safety initia- tives. Also, morning drop off time is 8:50 am. Students dropped off earlier are unsu- pervised. We can not assure their safety earlier than the scheduled arrival time. Teacher and parent meet- ings, daily preparations and additional duties do not allow us time for supervision ear- lier than the 8:50 am time. As we all experience the many changes that lie ahead for us, know that the strong- est support for students is a community of learners that works together to provide the best learning and social experiences for our chil- dren. Your efforts, time and positive attitudes are truly what make our school com- munity a special place. May we continue to find that joy of learning together!! WÜA ]tÇ YxwÉÜxÇ~É From the principal... Campbell's Labels for Education Special thanks to Dr. Fedorenko and the student volunteers who help count Campbell's Labels for Education UPC codes and get them ready for submission. Hanby does participate in this program however, there is no direct cash payment to the PTA. Instead, the amount of points sent to Campbell's must be redeemed for specific products in their catalog. AND it takes a long time to collect the number of points needed for specific items! In the past banked points have gone to-ward new playground balls and other school supplies. Campbell's UPC codes (WE DON"T NEED THE ENTIRE LABEL) can be dropped off in the Campbell's Soup "pop up" bin located on the 2nd floor in the hallway near the back entrance of Hanby.

Seeing Stars

The Hanby Library was transformed into Ginty Observatory for the 3rd-5th grade Nature and Sci-ence Club in March. We looked toward the heavens and studied the stars. The students made Sky Charts (Plano spheres) that they could use to pinpoint what stars are where in the sky on any given date and time. We also talked about tools to find out what is going on in the sky, like the skyand-telescope.com website that has This Week's Sky at a Glance. There are also great apps available for download on smart phones that are free. So, take some time and look toward the heavens to see Jupiter and Venus low in the western evening sky and the constellation Aries appearing. Use the North Star as a point of reference, as it does not move in the night sky.

In April, we will be getting messy, exploding some stuff and being grossed out with some weird con-coctions! I know that this is sort of craziness is usually reserved for our last N & S meeting, but I already have a plans for May. If the weather permits, we will be doing some of this outside to avoid some of the cleanup. As these are hands on experiments, I ask that as many parents as possible please come to volunteer. I would like to have at least one parent at each station, if not more. The 1st & 2nd grade will meet on April 3rd and the 3rd-5th grade will meet on April 17th.

Also, in May we will have a guest speaker coming in to bring the wetlands to us. Which is perfect, since May is National Wetlands Month!!

The rehearsals continue for Grease Jr. and the kids are learning their parts. Re-member, we would like to be off script in April!! Mark your calendars now for the date...MAY 10th!!! We will be performing for the school in the afternoon and then again in the evening for the public. Reminders for costume needs will be sent out soon and costume items that the students will be providing are due by April 12th! Remember, during Spring Break is a great time to check our re-sale shops and thrift stores. We will be having IDC on April 19th (which is an early release day) and doing a dress rehearsal. This will be an extra long re-hearsal, so don't FORGET your snacks! Also, assignments will be coming out for food items for our Performance Party on May 10th.

Service Learning through Art: Positive Plants

On March 16th grade four magnet students began a service learning project “Positive Plants” that applied science knowledge and art media techniques. All quality Service Learning projects have a goal in mind. Our goal is to use our plant growing knowledge from Mrs. Thiegs’ science class and glazing/color techniques from art class to create small herb gardens in decorated contain-ers. These small gardens of fresh herbs will be donated to W.A.R.M in May.

Volunteers from the Westerville Garden Club donated sweet basil and parsley seeds, grow lights, peat moss cups, and (most importantly) their plant growing exper-tise. The art room was hopping as the garden club taught us how to read the back of a seed packet for im-portant information about location, time and climate. Grade four students traded their planting tips and shared individual gardening stories.

The plants are currently living on a sunny shelf in the art room patiently waiting for the garden club to return and help us thin them out and replant them. While service learning is defined as using what we learn in school to benefit others. I think service learning is just plain fun and an opportunity to make new friends.

On behalf of the grade four participants, I would like to thank the Westerville Garden Club, Mayco Ceramics (donated pots and glaze), our new AmeriCorps fellow, Katyka Howard, AmeriCorps site leader: Karen Patter-son, Mrs. Theigs, Mrs. Powell and Dr. Fedorenko

We are hoping for a good crop, and look forward to an-other planting session.

Mrs. Perrone

We ask that you pre-order so we can ensure every-one has the opportunity to have this inspiring book, written and illustrated by our very own students.

Return order forms to your child’s classroom teacher by Friday April 6th. Distribution is planned for the end of April.

Earlier this year, the third, fourth and fifth grade students created poetry in which they imagined what possibilities the world holds. These poems have been compiled into one, along with student illustra-tions.

We are proudly creating a book for families to purchase for only $3.oo. The amazing part of this effort is that all proceeds (after the printing costs) will go towards supporting our book drive donations to WARM and the Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Yes, I would like to order the Imagine a World book, created by the students of Hanby.

JDRF Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes

On April 5, Hanby students will be walking to help find a cure for diabetes. Recently, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation visited Hanby and taught students about diabetes and explained the fundraiser. Here are some of the highlights:

• Sell the paper sneakers for $1 or more. Students should turn the paper sneakers into their teacher as they sell them.

• Collect cash and check pledges. Checks can be make out to JDRF.

Go online at www.jdrf.org/kidswalk and search for Hanby Arts Magnet School. Students can regis-ter and get their own personal fundraising webpage. Using this page, they can send messages to family and friends asking for their support in finding better treatments and a cure for diabetes.

As a bonus, Hanby will receive 10% of the money raised for the physical education department. Students will also be able to earn appreciation gifts as they raise funds.

Please send donations back to Hanby on the date indicated on the front of the collection envelope. On collection day, all students will participate in the walk. If you do not want your student to walk, please send a note in with your student.

If you want more information about JDRF or diabetes, please visit the website above.

Hello Hanby Families,

I am honored to announce that Kelley Femia has been selected as Hanby's GEM Award winner! She will be recognized at an awards ceremony on Monday, May 14th at Westerville South High School at 7 pm. Please join us in congratulating our GEM!

As you know, the Great Educator Mentor (GEM) Award is given to recognize an individ-ual who makes a difference in the lives of students of each school in Westerville. Kel-ley's crucial role as Hanby's PTA President was highlighted in her nomination from parent volunteer Leslie Thompson: "Under her leadership, Kelley has given a sense of stability during a time of uncertainty as the Westerville Magnet Program redefines it-self." Leslie also noted that "Kelley’s creativity has propelled solid fundraising efforts into creative learning experiences... Hanby is certainly a better place for students and staff under her wonderful volunteer efforts!" We couldn't agree more!

Kelley was nominated along with four wonderful candidates: Bronwyn Ginty, Jen Aultman, Kay Gaus, and Stacy Keenan, all of whom make very significant contribu-tions to our school. Thank you ALL for everything you do to make Hanby the special place it is!
