Inside this issue:

Notes from the Principal

Many thanks to the wonderful parent,

student, staff and community efforts

that were responsible for the success of

the Arts Auction. The committee worked

diligently on this event that was a huge

success!!!! I am proud to be a part of such a strong school community with

the commitment and volunteers that

make Hanby such a special place!

With the assistance of our school nurse

and Wellness Committee, the school has

accepted the challenge to sponsor a

Walk for Diabetes for our students. The

walk was originally scheduled for March

26, however, the spring weather did not

cooperate and we had some snowfall

that left ice on the sidewalks. To avoid

any injuries, we rescheduled our event

for April 16. Please feel free to join us. I

am proud to say students already col-

lected over $2,200 for this cause. If you

would like to walk with your child and help supervise please contact our school

nurse Linda Davis.

April 22, 2010 has been designated

“Take Your Child to Work Day” across

the country. This day, though fun and

informative for students, is not a school-

sponsored event. Career information

and planning is an important part of a

student’s education and is offered begin-

ning in our middle schools. Should you

and your child choose to participate in

the April 22 “Take Your Child to Work

Day,” it is imperative that you under-

stand the expectations and procedures

for participating. The day will be consid-

ered an excused absence.

Your child’s academic progress is very

important to us and each year the state administers tests in grades 3-5 to meas-

ure student achievement. This year the

state wide tests have bee renamed the

Ohio Academic Achievement tests or

OAA. Testing will begin on 19th and

teachers will inform you of the specific

dates that your child will be testing. In order to assess what your child knows it

is important that they are well rested

and feel confident. Your assistance in

insuring proper rest and nutrition as

well as support for them is influential in

assuring that we know what they know!!!

April is Arts Month in Westerville. Mark

your calendars for all of the Arts events

at Hanby and in Westerville. Student

exhibitions of artwork can be seen at

Java Central and the Westerville Parks

and Recreation Community Center. The

annual teacher as artist exhibition will open at the David Myers Art Gallery on

April 23 with Mary Ann Schell, Kimberly

Perrone and myself all displaying origi-

nal works of art. Hanby will celebrate an

evening of the arts with student perform-

ances in music and drama, and a large

art exhibition. Please plan to join us on

April 23 in the evening from 6:30- 8:30

p.m as we celebrate the arts in the lives

of our children!!

As always, I cherish every day that I

work at Hanby because it is a special

place where the learning community and

the families show their support and work

together for the education of their chil-

dren. May you spend time this spring break to appreciate the joy of your chil-

dren and the blossoms that spring

brings!

Sincerely,

Dr. Jan Fedorenko Principal

Come Celebrate An Evening in the Arts at Hanby : April 23, 2010 ~ 6:30-8:30

Hanby will participate in two

community arts exhibits and arts

related programs this April to

recognize April is Arts Month in

Westerville. On April 18, several

Hanby students will have their visual artwork on display in the

fifth annual “Art from the Heart”

elementary art show. As all ele-

mentary Westerville City Schools

participate, entries are limited to

one submission per grade level.

Over the past few years, the

show has gained such popularity

within our community that the

show has been moved to a larger

space. This year’s show and rec-

ognition ceremony will be at the

Westerville Community Center,

Cleveland, Avenue in Westerville. The festivities will begin at 2:00

PM with opening remarks and

comments from Dr. Good. The

reception, sponsored by the Arts

Council of Westerville, Inc., and

the elementary art teachers, will

be open until 3:30, is free, and

open to the public.

Our second April arts event, “An

Evening in the Arts”, will be held

on April 23, 2010 from 6:30PM

to 8:30 at Hanby Arts Magnet,

and is in conjunction with Wes-terville’s Fourth Friday celebra-

tion. This is especially exciting,

as every floor of Hanby School

will host student centered arts

events.

We will provide student

docent-led informational tours of

our “Learning about our Legacy”

mural in the basement. This five

part mural has been funded by a

Greater Columbus Arts Council

Neighborhood grant. Our own

grade one vocal artists who as

part of the first grade curriculum

have been studying music

around the world will share

songs from different countries, our grade two Ballet Met per-

formers, grade three Math Rap or

“multiplication made cool”, and

the Hanby Theater Club will en-

tertain us. These performances

will be on the first (cafeteria

level) floor.

The second floor and li-

brary will exhibit original art

from all Hanby students. This

“Kids Art Fair” gallery will offer

framed student art for sale

(additional information has been

sent home about this event, please look for it!). This is the

first time Hanby has linked with

Kid’s Art Fair Company, so we

are eager for students, parents,

and staff to attend and offer their

critiques.

Finally, on our third

floor, Hanby students will share

their learning in and through the

arts with an “Integrated Show-

case”. A variety of two dimen-

sional and three dimensional

integrated works will on display

along with explanations of how

the work was created.

Please mark your calen-

dars for Sunday, April 18th and

Friday, April 23rd, as Hanby

celebrates “April is Arts Month in

Westerville”!

Hanby’s Walk for

Diabetes

We have rescheduled the Walk for

Diabetes for Friday, April 16th. We

will use the modified schedule that

day for lunches and the students will

walk after their lunch/recess. Then

they will have an educational assem-

bly on diabetes at 2:30. If there are

any students that still want to par-

ticipate in the walk, but have not yet

turned in a permission slip, a packet

can be picked up in the office. We are asking that final collections be

turned in by Friday April 16th along

with the prize sheets.

If you are able to help chaperone

with the walk, please send me an e-

mail and let me know which class(es)

you would like to help with. We

would appreciate volunteers being at

the school 10-15 minutes before

walk time for the particular class. Below is the schedule we will use for

This year’s

GEM award recipient,

Linda Fergu-

son was

nominated for

her unending

volunteer ef-

forts here at

Hanby. Linda

is the grand-

mother of a

former Hanby

student and

still spends

countless hours here at Hanby as well as at

Blendon Middle School & Emerson.

At Hanby, Linda co-chairs the Arts

Auction and the Book Fair. She also

works with Otterbein to bring events

such as Family Fun Day and Field

Day to our students. Linda is always

there to help out with any task that

needs to be done, no job is ever too

small or too large for Linda to take

on and she always does it with a

smile on her face.

Other nominees for the award were:

Marti Corna - Ms. Corna was praised

her for desire to see that every stu-

dent succeeds and is prepared for

middle school. She gets to know

each of her students and challenges

them individually.

Mary Ann Schell - Mrs. Schell was

praised for the extra times she puts into the school by attending PTA

meetings, assisting with photography

club and being like a mom to the

students. She is a cheerful face that

greets parents, staff and visitors.

Bronwyn Ginty - Mrs. Ginty was

praised for all the hard work she has

put into Drama Club, Nature & Sci-

ence Club, Book Club, her many

hours of volunteering in the library,

and chairing the Italian Dinner. She

also makes sure the kids eat the

good stuff in their lunches first and

makes sure they are safe on the

playground.

Steve Casto - Mr. Steve recieved 2

nominations and was praised for not

only his ability to keep the school safe and operational but also for his

help with special events, help with

students that have conflicts, clearing

snow from staff cars before dis-

missal, and carrying things to cars

for people. He shows the power of

positivity and teaches kids that if

you are negative, you will never get

everything accomplished. Mr. Steve

is all about the kids, so whatever it

takes to make Hanby a better place for students, he is the "go to guy" to

make it happen.

Lindsay Powell - Mrs. Powell was

nominated for relating well to her

students and taking the time to get

to know her students' interests. She

makes all students feel special and

important and this doesn't stop

when the student moves on to fifth

grade. She is an up-beat kind of

person and tries to help the students

at Hanby be very positive as well.

Kay Gaus - Mrs. Gaus was nomi-

nated for her continued volunteering

efforts here at Hanby even though

she no longer has a child here. She

has spent numerous hours painting

murals that not only brighten up Hanby but are fun & educational as

well.

Please join us at April’s PTA meeting to honor

all our nominees and

our GEM winner.

Auction Poster Contest. The top three winners won gift

certificates to Serendipity Café. The winners were:

Megan H., Lauren H., and Parker L. All students who

participated received a goody bag with prizes for enter-

ing. Congratulations!

Auction Volunteers! The Arts Auction was a success due to the volunteers

that gave their time before, during and after the event. It

took more than 100 people to pull it off: planning, dona-

tions, basket organization and assembly, setup, event volunteers (there were many!), student council helpers,

cleanup, and more! THANK YOU!!!!!

Wanted: Leftover

Baskets to Recycle

Did you purchase a basket at

the Arts Auction? If you do not

want the basket your items

came in, the Arts Auction Com-

mittee would be happy to recycle your basket and

use it for next year’s auction. Just return your bas-

ket to the office labeled “For Auction.” Thanks!!!

Third Graders Learn about Whistles Making!

With the assistance of PTA funding, the Hanby 3rd graders traveled to the American Whistle Corporation on March 30th. The

students toured the factory and learned about what is involved in the production of goods and services that people use. The

factors of production include land, labor, capital and entrepreneurship. American Whistle is an ideal place for students to see

these first-hand. The company was founded in 1956 and is the only manufacturer of metal whistles in the United States to-

day.

Auctioneer Richard Helwig sells artwork created by Hanby Art

Teacher, Mrs. Perrone at the Hanby Arts Auction. One of two ma-

jor fundraisers at Hanby each year, the Auction raised approxi-

mately $13,000 for the curriculum enhancements, books, sup-

plies, field trips, and programs for the students of Hanby.

Graduate from the

D.A.R.E. Program

D.A.R.E.'s primary

mission is to pro-

vide children with

the information

and skills they

need to live drug-and-violence-free

lives.

The mission is to equip kids with the tools that will en-

able them to avoid negative influences and instead, al-

low them to focus on their strengths and potential. And,

that's exactly what D.A.R.E. is designed to do.

Additionally, it establishes positive relationships be-

tween students and law enforcement, teachers, parents,

and other community leaders. Every youngster should

have the opportunity to grow-up healthy, safe, secure,

and equipped with the skills needed to succeed in life.

Contemporary America, however, is rampant with chal-

lenges that could keep children from a positive life path.

Find out more about Ohio Achievement Testing at:

http://ohio3-8.success-ode-state-oh-us.info/

The Ohio Reading and Mathematics

Achievement Tests are annual assess-

ments that measure how well students

have learned the reading and math con-

cepts taught in grades 3 - 8. The

achievement tests are designed specifi-cally for Ohio students and are based

on Ohios academic content standards.

They do not test a childs intelligence or

aptitude and are not meant to compare

childrens abilities.

The federal No Child Left Behind Act of

2001(NCLB) requires all states to estab-

lish academic standards that tell what students should

know and be able to do in reading and math at the end

of each grade. NCLB also requires states to test all stu-

dents in grades 3 8 annually in reading and math to

assess how well students are meeting the academic

content standards. The results of the tests are used to identify districts, schools and students that may re-

quire additional resources to meet state academic stan-

dards.

Ohio Achievement Testing

Sleep problems in children can cause depression, low

self-esteem, difficulty in concentration and/or focus,

difficulty with critical thinking, problem solving and hy-peractivity. Sleep deprivation that continues over an ex-

tended period of time may present as attention deficit

disorder, and increases a child’s risk of obesity, diabetes

and clinical depression. Furthermore, children who suf-

fer from sleep deprivation are at a greater risk for

health, performance and safety problems. In addition,

there is a major connection between time in front of the

television and sleep disorders. One study suggests:

“Children who watch a lot of television – especially at

bedtime or on a TV set in their bedroom – are more

likely to resist going to bed, have trouble sleeping or

wake up more…” Similarly, video games can impact a

child’s quality and amount of sleep.

What are some of the common signs of sleep disor-

ders/depreviation in children?

(While these are possible symptoms of sleep deprivation and disorders, it is also important to remember that

they can also be symptoms of other problems and that

this is not meant to be a diagnostic list.)

• Frequent waking during the night

• Taking a long time to fall asleep

• Waking up crying

• Daytime sleepiness

• Nightmares, night terrors and/or bedwetting

• Grinding and/or clenching one’s teeth

• Waking up prematurely

• Talking during sleep and/or sleep walking

• Hyperactivity

• Low frustration tolerance and/or moodiness

• Difficulty getting up in the morning

How much sleep do children need?

Children ages six to nine -- ten to eleven hours of

sleep each night.

Children ages ten to fourteen -- nine to ten hours

of sleep each night.

Adolescents, ages fifteen and older -- eight to nine

hours of sleep each

night.

What can parents do?

Establish a reason-

able bedtime. Most

elementary school

children should be

going to bed by 9 p.m.

Allow sufficient time to wind down before bedtime.

Children should not be engaging in intense activi-ties, such as watching television, playing video

games, or using the computer, right before they go

to bed. They need about an hour of down time to

prepare to fall asleep. Such relaxing activities as

taking a bath or reading a story can help children

fall asleep more easily.

Avoid giving children caffeinated beverages and

foods high in sugar in the late afternoon and eve-

ning.

Provide a quiet sleeping area that is conducive to

sleep.

Maintain a consistent nightly routine. Children

should go to bed at the same time every night, in-

cluding weekends.
