Many people in Venice knew who Antonio Rossi was. Like his father, Antonio was a very good glassblower. He made many beautiful things from glass, for example *vases and *water pitchers. Because he got a new *furnace, Antonio now made his popular vases and water pitchers than before. Antonio's daughter Clara liked her father's workroom. She loved to look at all of the beautiful and colorful things he made. One day, she walked into the workroom and her father was there. He was standing *beside two *delicate glass vases. "Do you like them, Clara?" he asked. "I have made them for Mr. Lombardi, the great writer here in Venice." "They're beautiful, Father," Clara said. "I must go and get Mr. Lombardi," said her father.Then, he left the workshop. Clara looked at the vases. There was a *note beside them. It said," Mr.Rossi, Please make two beautiful vases for my wife. S. Lombardi." Clara read the note and smiled. When she turned around, she hit the vases. "No!" she cried. She tried to catch them, but it was too late. They fell to the ground and broke into many pieces. Only the round *bases at the bottom were not broken. Clara reached down and picked up one of the round bases. " A " she thought. She looked at the broken glass in front of her and cried. And then, she saw Mr. Lombardi's note through the glass. The words were ... BIG! Clara looked at the base. It was *flat on one side and *curved on the other. She picked up the other base and looked through it. It worked, too! The words looked bigger! Clara thought quickly. She found *a long piece of wire and then carefully put it around the two glass bases. When Clara finished, she heard footsteps. Mr.Lombardi and her father walked in. "Now I’ll show you the ... Clara!" Clara's father stopped, and looked at the broken vases on the floor. " B " Clara said quietly.

Mr. Lombardi looked at the two pieces of glass in a wire *frame in Clara's hand. " C " he asked. "I made it from the broken pieces," said Clara. "Look through them." Then, she showed him the note. Mr. Lombardi's eyes opened wide. "The words! They're big!" He looked at Clara's father. "My wife can't read my books because she can’t see well. This will be my *gift to her! It will be the greatest gift!" Clara's father smiled. "I don't know how you did it, Clara," he said, "but you made a very useful thing." In this way, D

To grow a sunflower, we first need to put *soil into a *pot. Put a *seed about one or two centimeters under the soil. Give a cup of water to the soil. With water and sunlight, the sunflower will start to grow in about one week.

The sunflower grows up out of the soil, and its *roots grow down. These roots get water and food from the soil. A single *stem grows higher and higher, and wide leaves grow out of the stem. Water and food go up through the roots, through the stem, and into the leaves.

Thirty days after the plant comes out of the ground, the flower of the sunflower plant begins to grow. The flower is round and *flat, with bright yellow *petals that grow around it. When *bees come to get *nectar from the flower, they bring *pollen with them from other flowers. With this pollen, new sunflower seeds can grow in the flat part of the flower.

Did you know that a sunflower always turns to the sun?The sunflower, like all plants, uses sunlight in a special *way. The leaves of

the sunflower get energy from sunlight for the plant. When leaves get this energy, they make *oxygen, too.

When the sunflower comes to the end of its life, the sunflower seeds *dry up. Some of them fall into the soil, and there they will grow into new sunflowers the next year. Birds eat some of the seeds. People take the sunflower seeds and eat them, too. The seeds also have sunflower oil in them and people use it for cooking.

Like all plants, the sunflower is very important for life on the earth. It is colorful and beautiful, and it gives oxygen and food to human and animals. We must remember to take care of the plants in our world because they take care of us!
