Dear Fellow Community Members,

As we move into a new year, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for all that you contributed to the Barton Foundation in 2011. The Foundation had an incredible year because of your generosity – whether you donated your time, talent, or dollars – we can’t thank you enough. Every day we’re moving closer to achieving our vision:

“To positively impact the health of everyone in our community by providing the financial resources necessary to fulfill Barton Health’s mission.”

I’m happy to report we set a fundraising record for the Foundation’s 20th Annual Gala during the Festival of Trees and Lights in December. Achieving this result during such challenging economic times is something of which we can all be proud. The Gala honored Dr. Greg Bergner, Dr. Brooks Martin, and Dr. Paul Rork as the 2011 Spirit of Philanthropy Award winners. These three physicians embody all that philanthropy is – demonstrating devotion for humanity day in and day out. Their service to improve the health of the Tahoe community perfectly aligns with the Foundation’s mission to ensure everyone in our region has access to quality health care.

We have a tremendous year ahead for the Barton Foundation – continuing our support for the hospital’s high priority initiatives around wellness, orthopedic excellence, a new trauma designation the community clinic expansion, quality and patient satisfaction, and state-of-the-art health care technology to name a few.

Please continue to stay engaged with the Foundation and support us in our cause to inspire philanthropy for the health our community. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, have a healthy 2012!

Sincerely,

Julie Regan Chair, Board of Trustees Barton Foundation

Making a difference in our community’s health

The 2011 Barton Health Grants were distributed once again at the Philanthropy Day Luncheon on November 4th, at Riva Grill. Ten local non-profits received grants

amounting to $25,000.

The grants are reviewed by Barton’s Community Advisory Committee which is comprised of 25 members representing local non-profits, education, public health,

etc. The group spends 4-5 months educating themselves on the area’s most pressing health needs and then awards

grants to the local programs that best address those needs.

“We’ve given more than $75,000 since our inception three years ago,” said committee chair, Michelle Feeney, a nurse

practitioner at Barton Pediatrics. “It is very satisfying to know that we are able to directly make a difference in our

community’s health.

The 2011 Grant Recipients included AYSO Soccer Scholarship fund - $1,000; Bijou Community School Exercise Circuit Course - $2,500; CASA - $2,000; El Dorado County Jail HEARTS program $3,200; Family

Resource Center Heart Health Series - $2,100; LTUSD Healthy Choices Program - $7,700; NAMI funding for medication - $1,500; Sports Connection - $1,000l; Tahoe Youth and Family Services nutrition program for

little Latinas - $1,000; and the Drug Store Project - $3,000.

Festival Now a Family TraditionIt’s so nice to finally feel like we have hit our stride,” says Ann Jones Barton Foundation Trustee and Festival Chair for the past three years. “We’ve worked so hard to make this event a family tradition, and I think this year, we did it. We saw many families returning and we were able to offer them a charming hometown holiday experience filled with entertainment, Santa, and magic! Our efforts are really starting to pay off.”

Each February the Festival of Trees and Lights Steering Committee begins meeting to plan for the holiday festival. “We celebrate our success, thank our volunteers, and then get to work,” says Kindle Craig, Executive Director of the Barton Foundation. “My staff and our committee of incredibly dedicated volunteers and local designers really make this happen. We review each of our events, discuss what worked and what didn’t, and brainstorm how we can make it even better in the year ahead.”

Each year the committee freshens up the Festival and sets goals for each of the events. This year’s goals included:

Upgrade the Festival Entry: So this year’s event featured hand-painted nutcrackers by local artist Millicent Meng and a wonderful new graphic sign donated by Western Sign of Placerville.

Make the Teddy Bear Breakfast even more magical: Marsha Ticas, event chair, created a full-size Teddy Bear costume and Santa ornaments that featured each table’s “name” (ex. Frosty, Rudolph, etc.,) the Foundation purchased huge Teddy Bears that greeted you upon entry, there were Teddy Bear coloring sheets and crayons for kids to keep them occupied, and Barton employee Kathleen Wharton crafted custom tree skirts for each table.

Organize the Craft area: Luckily, we found retired art teacher Linda Morris who agreed to take on our

craft area and, with the help of her husband Doug, created a wonderfully organized and creative area where

kids could write a letter to Santa Claus (Santa always writes back), make their own popsicle stick reindeer, ornaments, and more!

“Each year we strive to make the event richer and more inviting. It can be something as simple as taking a cue from Disney and adding the smell of fresh baked gingerbread as you enter, better signage, and more ‘store like’ fixtures,” said Barton Foundation Coordinator, Denise Earls. “No detail goes unnoticed.”

“Volunteers and local business donations are really what make the event work,” said Craig. “It’s not easy to keep it fresh and exciting for 3 days and nights, but somehow we do it. We have non-stop entertainment thanks to area entertainers, we are grateful to Bill Horning and local Lake Tahoe Television host Dreu Murin who were there every minute we were open. It’s humbling. It makes you really proud to live here.”

The Festival of Trees and Lights began in 2009 and has been generously hosted each year by Montbleu Resort Casino and Spa. Since that time the event has more than doubled in attendance to 3,600 and the income has grown exponentially with net income of more than $54,000 this year. All proceeds from this year’s Festival benefit the Barton Community Clinic expansion project, which is planned to break ground this

Spring. Over the past three years the Festival raised more than $85,000 for the expansion project.

“Thank you to everyone on this committee, the board, local businesses, volunteers and staff for making this event possible,” Craig said. “We should be very proud – I think our little event has grown into a holiday tradition!”

Each year, funds from the Festival of Trees and Lights benefit a specific project at the Hospital. The Board of Trustees vote each November for the project that they feel is most in need of funding. The 2012 beneficiary will be the Level III trauma center project, which you can read more about on page 7.

The Barton Foundation’s goal for the 20th annual Gala was to make it more than an event – it was to make it a production. And, if the money raised was any indication – we achieved our goal. The event was sold out in late November and raised a total of $107,000 for the hospital.

Upon entry guests were greeted with a glass of champagne and led to their tables by local high school “hostesses” in flowing formal gowns. Guests then enjoyed live music performed by local musician John Chevallier, sipped signature cocktails courtesy of Lakeside Inn, and perused the silent auction featuring everything from iPods to Webkinz.

Guests were seated at aubergine tables adorned with sequins and chartreuse courtesy of Thran’s Flowers and dined on a delicious 4-course meal complemented by outstanding boutique wines. The party kicked into high gear when the Wayne Foster band graced the stage. Dreu Murin and LA talent Dawn Marie Kotsonis led the live auction where gorgeous designer trees, a festive holiday

table setting, a fabulous playhouse built by Carpenters Union Local 1789, a custom copper-clad doghouse courtesy of Ryan Brown Construction, and trips to exotic locales such as London, NYC, Carlsbad, and Cabo San Lucas were sold.

The evening hit a high note when the Spirit of Philanthropy Award was presented by Barton’s former CEO Bill Gordon to three of Tahoe’s favorite physicians: Dr. Greg Bergner, Dr. Brooks Martin, and Dr. Paul Rork. The crowd had a chance to show their support for the Barton Community Clinic by participating in the Fund a Dream appeal.

The party kept right on going until midnight. Afterward, revelers could be found at the post party at Montbleu’s HQ Bar. To join the party this year, call the Foundation and request an invitation to the 21st annual Gala.

At Barton we are continually striving to provide the best quality care to our patients. In the last issue we covered Value Based Purchasing, Core Measures, and Disney’s Service Excellence Training for all of Barton’s employees. In this issue, we will focus on programs that effect the inpatients at the hospital.

No Call Light Left BehindWhen you are in the hospital you will see many Barton employees wearing a bright purple Caregiver ribbon which identifies them as someone who has received “Caregiver Training”. Currently, about 100 Barton employees have been through this program that reinforces Barton’s effort to put patients first. Employees from Social Services, Rehab, Radiology, Dietary, Housekeeping, Food Service, and even Foundation have joined in an effort to respond to call lights whenever we see them “buzzing”.

“With a little training we can now all feel comfortable to tend to a patient’s needs,” said Natalie Stetson, Foundation Administrative Assistant, “It’s really easy to find out what they need and either help them or find someone who can.”

Care TransitionsIn April, Barton will begin an effort to help our patients and their families successfully transition from the acute care inpatient setting to the outpatient setting. The effort will mainly target our most vulnerable populations – the elderly and those with chronic disease such as congestive heart failure and diabetes. The purpose is to engage selected patients in a program that will improve the quality of their care by ensuring that information is shared between healthcare settings (for example, the hospital and their clinician’s office) and to help the patient identify who will provide support during the transition from hospital to home. The goal is to help patients be successful in managing their treatment plan and be successful in staying out of the hospital.

Patients will work with a Transition Coach (a Barton registered nurse with public health credentials) who will provide support in the transition from hospital to home coaching the patient and their caregiver on successful

medication management and care needs after discharge. Participation in this program is voluntary and free of charge. Health care services will not change for the patient if they choose to participate or not. As a participant, patients will receive support in completing a Personal Health

Record document, one or more hospital visits from their Transitions Coach, one or more home visits and follow-up phone calls between them and their Transitions Coach during the first 30 days following hospital discharge.

Program education with Barton Health staff will begin in March followed by a targeted program launch in April. The concepts utilized in Barton Health’s Care Transition Program are formulated from an evidence based framework created by Dr. Eric Coleman for more information please visit www.caretransitions.org.

Communication StationThe Barton Foundation recently collaborated with the nursing staff to create new pre-printed white boards that are designed to give our patients useful information “at a glance” and also provide patients and families a place to communicate with their caregivers. As you can see from the illustration, the board captures not only a patient’s care team’s names and when they will return, the patient’s goal for the day, and other information but also includes a space for patients and families to ask doctor’s questions – or for their caregivers to note other important information such as cell phone numbers.

“The white boards are a great communication tool, patients know who their physician, pediatrician and nurse are for the day, they know the plan for the day and can also note questions for their caregiver,” said Peggy Wright, director of Perinatal Services at Barton Health.

You will see these on the 2nd floor in our newly remodeled private patient rooms and also in the Family Birthing Center. This project was funded by the Barton Foundation and so far, we’ve heard nothing but rave reviews from the staff and patients.

Barton Seeks Level III Trauma Designation in 2012-2013Barton Memorial Hospital, in conjunction with the region’s emergency medical services response team, is working to establish Barton Memorial Hospital as a Level III trauma center by spring of 2013.

As a Level III trauma center, Barton will be able to evaluate, assess and treat many more people who are now flown to a designated trauma center. We already have the expertise on staff – surgeons, Orthopedists, emergency doctors and nurses. The next step is to receive the designation as verified by El Dorado County and the American College of Surgeons, the “gold standard” in Trauma Center verification. The process is onerous – it will take us more than a year of consultation, oversight, education and reporting to achieve this designation, but the benefit to our community and to those who travel here far outweigh the costs.

We’ve all heard the stories, or experienced them ourselves, of skiing accidents, mountain biking falls, automobile accidents, or simply the inadvertent slip on black ice that resulted in a leg fracture. We know that when something does go wrong, we want to get help and we want it fast. Trauma care services and reduced pre-hospital times are the essential components of an efficient trauma care system and are proven to reduce mortality.

Barton Health is dedicated to providing our community with the right care at the right time. Acquiring this new trauma designation will mean that Barton Memorial Hospital has met stringent criteria for providing comprehensive care for trauma patients from admission to rehabilitation. A Level III trauma center designation validates that Barton Health has the expertise and resources available to provide the best possible care to trauma patients.

The Barton Foundation is helping to raise the more than $200,000 in funding it will require to make the necessary modifications and equipment purchases

for the emergency department. We have already received a generous donation to help fund the initial transition of two emergency rooms into trauma bays. If you would like to help make this vision a reality, please contact the Barton Foundation at 530-543-5612.

Electronic Medical Records Coming to Barton! To meet healthcare reform requirements, Barton will join other facilities across the nation in implementing an electronic medical record system. The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) will ensure safe and quality care for patients. The system will provide easy access to health information for caregivers including lab work, medications and X-rays and will enable a seamless transfer of patient medical records from one facility to another, all the while protecting patient privacy.

“In emergency situations where time is of the essence this is just one more tool that we can use to ensure we are delivering the very best care to our patients,” said Dr. Clint Purvance, Barton’s Chief Medical Officer. “The EMR system will roll out first in our physician offices this spring and then into the hospital this fall. We plan to have a completely deployed system by the end of 2012.”

Community Health Needs Assessment UnderwayThe Community Health Needs Assessment is not only a requirement of healthcare reform, but will identify the health issues that are in the greatest need of support on the South Shore. Barton plans to identify barriers to access for healthcare, preventative healthcare needs, modifiable health risks and quality-of-life issues. The goal is to obtain a quantifiable gauge of the overall health status of our community and then to work with our community partners through our Community Advisory Committee to address our community’s most pressing needs. Findings should be available this summer and will be shared with our community via a website and outreach events.

Home Health and Hospice will go live in April with an electronic medical record system entirely paid for by Hospice donor funds. The new system will allow Barton Caregivers to bring laptop computers into patient homes and do their charting real time. This will improve accuracy and efficiency and thereby improve patient care.

We have begun the final stage of our private patient room project. In July, we will have 62 beautiful, serene, private patient rooms.

At the January Board of Directors’ meeting the purchase of a Da Vinci Surgical System, which will help us to deliver the very best care to our patients by offering them minimally invasive, more precise surgery and faster recovery was unanimously approved Our surgeons will be trained and ready to “glove up” sometime in the spring.

Our Emergency Department has been undergoing an “overhaul” and apparently our patients like it! Emergency Department co-directors Warren Withers, M.D. and Beth Brown, R.N. have been hard at work over the past year to completely rethink how we triage our patients and schedule our staff to offer our patients the very best care. Their efforts have paid off - our patient satisfaction scores have increased by 5 percent, we are now outperforming the national and California average benchmarks.

2012:TheYearAheadExciting projects on the horizon will lead to better care for our community

Page 8: H Bartearon Foundationtbeat - Barton Healthbartonhealth.com/uploads/public/documents/heartbeat/Winter2012.pdf · iPods to Webkinz. Guests were seated at aubergine tables adorned with

The Barton Foundation raised more than $575,000 in 2011 with a majority of our income coming from events, individual contributions to programs such as Hospice and cancer services, and our annual appeal. The Barton Foundation is sincerely thankful to each and every one of the many individuals, service clubs, foundations, and businesses that have helped us to further our mission of inspiring philanthropy for the health of our community. One of our goals this past year was to ensure that all Barton Health patients have a best in class experience. We achieved this goal by listening to our patient and caregivers’ needs and purchasing pre-printed whiteboards to improve communications in our Family Birthing Center and inpatient areas of the hospital. In addition, thanks to the generosity of one of our donors we were able to convert two of our Emergency Rooms to Trauma Bays. These will serve as a model moving forward with custom cabinetry, special beds, and portable equipment to ensure that our physicians and nursing staff are able to quickly respond in critical situations. These are just two of the many projects that the Foundation funded this year – in total we donated

more than $131,000 to the hospital and community programs.
