Here it is April and the grass is turning green, the flowers are starting to bud and bloom. We have all been giv-en some time to slow down and absorb the beauty of Spring popping out in our state. All around us, people are cleaning up their yards from the long winter’s nap. Birds are singing and starting to build their nests. Let’s think positive and get ready for the riding season!! We have a great schedule planned and can’t wait to all safely get together again. Get that yard work and spring cleaning done so you are ready to ride. No excuses you have work to do and can’t ride, once we are all safely able to once again ride in a group.

First of all, let me reaffirm that our events for April have been cancelled or postponed. We are also taking another step into the month of May and postponing our annual Maintenance Breakfast that was to be held on May 3

rd. Wally and I chatted

on Saturday and decided it would be best to cancel the Men’s Ride for the month of May. We did discuss the possibility of doing this ride a little later in the year. No one says it HAS to be the week of Mother’s Day!! This will give our Florida and Arizona snow birds time to return and maybe go on some of these rides they normally can’t participate in. Wally wants to wait and hang on to some hope of doing our Memorial Week-end trip to Athens Ohio. There is time to make that decision.

Today, April 5, 2020 is Chapter E’s 38th Anniversary!! We have been a strong chapter for all of those years and

we plan on staying strong as we move forward. Looking ahead into June, which is really not that far off, we have our FUN RUN planned for Saturday June 6 at the Brandon Community Park on Hadley Rd (Same location as the last few years). This will be our 30

th Annual FUN RUN and the team have chosen the theme “Picnic in the Park”. We plan to do

red & white checked table coverings and stay with our normal food dishes (Chicken and brats). It will take EVERYONE helping, as you usually do, to make this another great event!!! We will need a bit of extra help since Brent & Sandy will be out of town on this day. Please plan on being there and helping in every way you can!! If you have any ideas or sug-gestions please share so that we can be well organized for this occasion.

I hope you had FUN with the “Do you have…” I sent out this past week, in an email. There were several of you who participated. I will be doing it once in a while and prizes will be awarded at our next Gathering. Our newest member, Jeff Anderson, won the first game. Hey, why not stick one in the newsletter this month? Hmmm….what shall I ask for a picture of? Remember, you can only win once per gathering and it’s the first one that sends me a picture of a Spring flower blooming? Get ready….gooooo..

Till we chat again….

Stay healthy and be safe….

The History of

TOILET PAPER

In these trying times, this bit of levity may bring a smile to your faces...

1. The first recorded use of toilet paper was in 6th Century China.

2. By the 14th Century, the Chinese govern-ment was mass-producing it.

3. Packaged toilet paper wasn't sold in the United States until 1857.

4. Joseph Gayety, the man who introduced packaged TP to the U.S. had his name printed on every sheet.

5. Global toilet paper demand uses nearly 30,000 trees every day.

6. That's 10 million trees a year.

7. It wasn't until 1935 that a manufacturer was able to promise Splinter-Free Toilet Paper.

8. Seven percent of Americans admit to stealing rolls of toilet paper in hotels.

9. Americans use an average of 8.6 sheets of toilet paper per trip to the bathroom.

10. The average roll has 333 sheets.

11. Historically, what you use to wipe depended on your income level.

12. In the middle ages they used something called a gompf stick which was just an actual stick used to scrape.

13. Wealthy Romans used wool soaked in rose water and French royalty used lace.

14. Other things that were used before toilet paper include: Hay, corn cobs, sticks, stones, sand, moss, hemp, wool, husks, fruit peels, ferns, sponges, seashells, knotted ropes, and broken pot-tery (ouch!). I must add Poison Ivy leaves with others available

15. 70-75% of the world still doesn't use toilet paper because it is too expensive or there is not suffi-cient plumbing.

16. In many Western European countries, bidets are seen as more effective and preferable to toilet paper.

17. Coloured toilet paper was popular in the U.S. until the 1940s.

18. The reason toilet paper disintegrates so quickly when wet is that the fibers used to make it are very short.

19. On the International Space Station, they still use regular toilet paper but it has to be sealed in special containers and Compressed.

7

Page 8: GWRRAgwrra-mi.org/chapter/e/newsletter/2020/Ch_E_04_Apr_newsletter.pdfKuehl, MEDIC FIRST AID® Director is suspending ALL scheduled MFA classes effective IMMEDI-ATELY and until further

20. During Desert Storm, the U.S. Army used toilet paper to camouflage their tanks.

21. In 1973 Johnny Carson caused a toilet paper shortage. He said as a joke that there was a short-age, which there wasn't, until everyone believed him and ran out to buy up the supply. It took three weeks for some stores to get more stock.

22. There is a contest sponsored by Charmin to design and make wedding dresses out of toilet pa-per. The winner gets $2,000.

23. There was a toilet paper museum in Wisconsin, The Madison Museum of Bathroom Tissue, but it closed in 2000.

24. The museum once had over 3,000 rolls of TP from places all over the world, including The Gug-genheim, Ellis Island, and Graceland.

25. There is still a virtual toilet paper museum called Nobody's Perfect.

26. In 1996, President Clinton passed a Toilet Paper Tax of 6 cents per roll, which is still in ef-fect today. Obama tried to triple that but the House wouldn't pass it.

27. The Pentagon uses, on average, 666 rolls of toilet paper per day.

28. The most expensive toilet paper in the world is from Portuguese brand Renova.

29. Renova is three-ply, perfumed, costs $3 per roll and comes in several colors including black, red, blue and green.

30. The CEO of Renova came up with the idea for black toilet paper while he was at a Cirque du So-leil show.

31. Beyonce uses only red Renova toilet paper.

32. Kris Jenner uses only the black Renova toilet paper.

33. If you hang your toilet paper so you can pull it from the top, you're considered more intelligent than someone who pulls it from the bottom. (Wonder how this was determined?)

34. Koji Suzuki, a Japanese horror novelist best known for writing The Ring, had an entire novel printed on a single roll of toilet paper.

35. The novel takes place in a public bathroom and the entire story runs approximately three feet long.

36. When asked what necessity they would bring to a desert island, 49% of people said toilet paper before food.

37. Queen Elizabeth II wipes her royal bottom with silk handkerchiefs. Wonder if the royal chamber-maid gets to wash those?

38. Muslims wipe their bums with their bare hand--- always the left hand. They eat with their right hand. If you are caught shop lifting, your right hand is cut off forcing you to eat with your poopy left hand.

This history was sent to you using my right hand

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO GET THROUGH THE DAYS

BEING COOPED UP IN YOUR HOUSE?

Sharing an eMail from a fellow Chapter E Member:

Hi Deniis & Gayle,

I am still anxious to ride with the group but this will have to wait. We have cleaned the

house, dusted and waxed furniture - not very exciting but it had to be done.

My wife and her quilting group have made over 1700 fabric face masks which we

have donated to Rochester Police, Oakland County Sheriff, Beaumont and some

local nursing homes. I'm the pick up and delivery guy (and my GL 1500 works well for

this !!).

Prior to the stay at home lock down I was planning to visit Wally and have him ride

my bike for his opinion and show me how to remove the plastic body work without

any damage. I can change oil and spark plugs but I need help with the trim. I also

want to lube the speedo cable - just gotta find it - and a couple other minor questions

that hopefully can be answered when the workshop takes place.

Really looking forward to the next meeting and ride.

Thanks,

Jeff Anderson

Chapter E Open Position: Membership Enhancement Coordinator

We are in need of a Membership Enhancement Coordinator for our Chapter. Art & Marla filled this position for many years and did any awesome job of it!! Now it’s time for someone else to step up and lend a helping hand. Requirements:

Review members membership information and make calls to remind them of their expiration date coming up.

We want to keep our members and help them in keeping current. We are all very busy and a little friendly phone call to say “hello” and let them know we care goes a long way!

Welcome guests and new members and make them feel welcome and at home with our group.

Help in the planing of events we do, to have more FUN!!

Encourage other members to invite friends and relatives to come and join us so they can ex-perience the FUN, SAFETY and KNOWLEDGE we gain and share.

Let’s talk and I can explain more. Talk to Art & Marla and they can share their information with you as well. No pressure, let’s talk and see if this is a way you can help us out! Gayle & Dennis Jisa Chapter Directors GWRRA Chapter E

Chapter E’s Anniversary was on April 5th:

On THIS DAY IN HISTORY….

Michael Jackson’s Thriller Album was released, and is now considered the Best Selling album globally.

Someone in Japan bought the first CD Player.

Disney opened Epcot Center Park.

Dutch Elm Disease arrived and killed millions of Elm trees.

We lost Jim Belushi.

We honored our Vietnam Veterans with the dedication of the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial.

After years of events, roads and miles - RIDE ON and ENJOY!!
