WHAT IS THE ARE®?

ARE 4.0Overview

The registration of architects is one of the means by which U.S.registration boards and Canadian provincial and territorialassociations fulfill their mission to safeguard public health, safety, and welfare. Any individual may apply to one of theU.S. state or territorial boards or one of the Canadian provincialor territorial associations (together referred to as Boards ofArchitecture, or Boards, in this publication) for registration as anarchitect. However, to become registered, a person mustdemonstrate that he or she is qualified to render architecturalservices by meeting education, training, and examinationstandards established by each Board.

The Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) is developedby the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards(NCARB). The ARE has been adopted for use by all U.S. state andterritorial registration boards and by the Canadian provincialand territorial architectural associations as the registrationexamination for all candidates for architectural registration.

The ARE assesses a candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilitiesto provide the various services required in the practice ofarchitecture. No single examination can test for competencyin all aspects of architectural practice; the ARE is not intendedfor that purpose. The ARE concentrates on the professionalservices that affect the public health, safety, and welfare. Theintent of the examination is to evaluate a candidate’s compe-tence to protect the public by providing the architecturalservices of pre-design, site design, building design, buildingsystems, and construction documents and services as theyrelate to social, cultural, natural and physical forces, and toother related external constraints.

In addition to testing for competence in specific subject areas,NCARB is aware of the responsibilities an architect may have forcoordinating the activities of others involved in thedesign/construction process. The ARE attempts to determine a

candidate’s qualifications not only in performing measurabletasks, but also in exercising the skills and judgment of a gener-alist working with numerous specialists. In short, the objectiveis to reflect the practice of architecture as an integrated whole.

The ARE is administered exclusively on computers at a networkof test centers across the United States, its territories, andCanada. Scores for each division will be sent to the Board ofArchitecture that qualified the candidate for the examination. That Board of Architecture has the ultimate authority todetermine a candidate’s qualifications to practice architecturewithin its jurisdiction.

Prior to taking the ARE, you must be made eligible by one ofNCARB’s member registration boards or one of the Canadianprovincial architectural associations. It is not possible to“sign-up” for the exam with NCARB or NCARB’s testing consult-ant. Only individuals who have been made eligible for the AREwill be permitted to take the exam.

ARE 4.0 consists of the followingseven divisions: Programming, Planning & Practice Site Planning & Design Building Design & Construction Systems Schematic Design Structural Systems Building Systems Construction Documents & Services

To help candidates prepare for the examination, the testspecifications and references for each division are available tobe downloaded from NCARB’s web site atwww.ncarb.org/are/40/StudyAids.html.

BENEFITS OF NCARB CERTIFICATION

ARE 4.0Overview

After successful completion of the examination and licensureprocess, many newly registered architects find it necessary tobecome registered in other jurisdictions. Typically, this meanscompleting new forms from the second registration boarddocumenting your education, employment, references, andexam scores because boards do not accept copies of otherboards’ application forms. NCARB has developed a certificationsystem that makes this process much easier.

Almost half of the 54 NCARB member registration boardsrequire an NCARB Certificate for interstate registration. NCARBcertification is also used to facilitate reciprocity between U.S.and Canadian jurisdictions. The Certificate is granted to thosearchitects who are registered by an NCARB Member Board orCanadian provincial association, and whose NCARB Recordhas been compiled and evaluated to ensure that NCARB’sstandards for certification have been met.

Maintaining a record of your qualifications is one of manyservices that NCARB provides. The NCARB Record is a detailed, authenticated record of your education, training, examination, registration, and character. This confidential Record consistsof school transcripts, employment verifications, architectverifications, and examination and registration history. Inorder to be issued an NCARB Certificate, you must complywith the Council’s standards as set collectively by NCARB’sMember Boards.

As long as your Certificate is in good standing, and thetransmittal fee has been paid, NCARB will transmit yourCertificate Record to any Member Board or foreign registrationauthority in support of your application for registration. The Certificate Record–your NCARB Record along withcertification–signifies to registration authorities that youhave met NCARB’s certification standards.

In order to request a transmittal of your NCARB Record, youshould call the Council, visit NCARB’s web site (www.ncarb.org),or write the NCARB office. Please include your file number, daytime phone number, fax number, and the name of thejurisdiction(s) to which you are requesting a transmittal of yourNCARB Record.

Unlike a license, an NCARB Certificate does not entitle you topractice architecture in a jurisdiction. It also does not indicatemembership in NCARB; rather, it stands as a testimony to yourqualifications as an architect. The Certificate carries the recom-mendation that you should be registered as an architectwithout additional submissions or examination, although afew states may require you to demonstrate your competencyin additional areas such as arctic construction or local laws. These additional requirements may be found in the MemberBoard Requirements section of NCARB’s web site.

There are many reasons to begin compiling your NCARBRecord early in your career. Relevant employment must beverified in order to be eligible for certification. By starting theRecord compilation process now, you can document yourexperience as it is earned and take advantage of specialcost-saving options for the program.

If, after receiving your initial registration, you are interested inapplying for NCARB certification, you can obtain the necessaryforms and information by calling NCARB’s Records Departmentat 202/879-0520 or by visiting the Council’s web site(www.ncarb.org).

KEY ORGANIZATIONS

ARE 4.0Overview

NCARBThe National Council of Architectural Registration Boards(NCARB) is a nonprofit corporation that includes as itsmembers all legally constituted Boards of Architecture inthe 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Each Board of Architecture has the ultimate authority todecide who will or will not be granted a license, also knownas registration, to practice architecture within its jurisdiction.

As members of NCARB, these Boards of Architecturecollectively formulate recommended standards for all membersto follow, including education, internship, examination, andcontinuing education requirements. Individual Boards may ormay not adopt the standards that are adopted nationally, but amajority of the Boards have adopted similar requirements forregistration. This substantial consistency of standards makes itpossible to facilitate reciprocal registration within the UnitedStates and Canada.

NCARB’s Member Boards are governmental entities. The workof the Council is carried out by the individuals appointed toserve on the various Boards of Architecture. In most cases, thegovernor in each state appoints Board members. In somecases, one Board may regulate architects as well as engineers, landscape architects, and other professions.

Members of the U.S. Boards of Architecture meet at NCARB’sAnnual Meeting to develop major policies and elect a 12-14member Board of Directors. This Board of Directors governs theCouncil between Annual Meetings. An Executive Vice Presidentoversees the staff at NCARB’s offices inWashington, DC.

The staff of NCARB does not set policy—that is theresponsibility of the Board of Directors and theMember Boards.

CCACThe Committee of Canadian Architectural Councils (CCAC)acts as a forum of the provincial architectural associationsto facilitate communication, cooperation, and coordinationamong its members, and other organizations, regarding issuesrelating to national standards for admission to the professionand for the performance of architectural services in Canada.Members of the CCAC are autonomous associations. The CCACcomprises a representative from each of the provincial andterritorial associations of architecture.

The provincial associations of architecture are self-governingand self-regulating organizations that regulate the admissionof individuals in exchange for safeguarding the public.A Reciprocity Agreement is in place among the provincialand territorial associations that establishes “CommonAdmission Standards” for entry into the profession. Theprovincial and territorial Councils, composed mostly ofelected architects, set policy.

UNITS OF MEASUREMENT & U.S./CANADIAN STANDARDS ANDTERMS

ARE 4.0Overview

Units of Measurement & U.S./CanadianStandards and termsThe ARE includes both inch-pound and SI (Système Interna-tional) units commonly referred to as metric units. References toapplicable Canadian documents, standards, and terms are alsoincluded.

For most multiple-choice questions, SI units and Canadianstandards and terms appear in brackets immediately followingthe inch-pound units and U.S. standards and terms. Conver-sions to SI units are approximate and have been rounded forsimplicity and clarity. You must complete your work in eitherinch-pound (imperial) units or metric (SI) units, where appropri-ate. Converting from one system to another may result inwrong answers.

For the graphic vignettes, you will be given the opportunity tochoose to work in either inch-pound units or metric units atthe beginning of the graphic portion of each examination.Once you have made a choice and confirmed your selection, your decision will be irrevocable and cannot be changed dur-ing your examination. All of the dimensions and references tostandards on the drawings and in the written material will bedisplayed in the measurement system selected.

NCARB’S ROLLING CLOCK ANDMAINTAINING ELIGIBILITY

ARE 4.0Overview

NCARB’s Rolling ClockDuring NCARB’s 2004 Annual Meeting, the Council passed aresolution officially creating a “rolling clock” requirement for theARE. Under the terms of the Rolling Clock, which was officiallyimplemented on January 1, 2006, candidates for the AREmust pass all divisions within five years. Three transitional rules, which are noted below, will guide the process.

RulesThree basic rules will guide the implementation of theRolling Clock: For applicants who passed all divisions of the ARE by

January 1, 2006, regardless of the time taken, suchapplicants will have passed the ARE.

For applicants who have passed one or more but not alldivisions of the ARE by January 1, 2006, such applicants willhave five years from the date of the first (non-exempt)passed division to pass all remaining divisions. [Examspassed prior to January 1, 2006, are exempt.] If a candidatefails to pass all remaining divisions within the initial five-yearperiod, the candidate is given a new five-year period fromthe date of the second oldest passed division. The five-yearperiod shall commence after January 1, 2006, on the datewhen the first passed division is administered.

For applicants who have passed no divisions of the AREby January 1, 2006, such applicants shall be governedby the above five-year requirement. The five-year periodshall commence on the date when the first passed divisionis administered.

Adherence to these rules is required for NCARB Certification.

transitional RequirementsPlease see the current version of the Handbook for Interns& Architects which is available on the Free Publications pageof the NCARBweb site:www.ncarb.org/publications/freepubs.html.

Maintaining Exam EligibilityYou are responsible for maintaining your exam eligibility withyour registration board. Consequently, you should be aware ofthe specific rules your board has for maintaining eligibility. Some boards require you to pay an annual maintenance fee sothey do not cancel scores for divisions you passed, should youreligibility expire.

Because the rules vary from board to board and are subject tofrequent change, NCARB cannot be responsible if you take adivision of the ARE at a time when your board has canceledyour eligibility. Your scores may be canceled for the divisionstaken when your eligibility has expired, and you will not beeligible for a refund of test fees. Therefore, it is important foryou to stay informed of your individual registration board'spolicies and procedures. This includes notifying them of anyaddress changes so they can contact you about eligibilityrenewals or any other important licensure information andso that NCARB can contact you regarding any updates aboutthe exam.

STEP 5: RECEIVING YOUR SCORE

Six Steps toCompletingthe ARE

All divisions of the ARE are administered and graded bycomputer. Results for all divisions are typically processedwithin two to four weeks of your test date. Afterprocessing, your score is forwarded directly to your Boardof Architecture. your Board then completes any additionalprocessing and forwards the score report to you. Testresults are not released at the test center and are not availablethrough NCARB.

Although every effort is made to return examination scores toyour Board in a timely manner, NCARB’s first priority is to ensurethat all examinations are scored fairly and accurately and thatno errors are made in the score-reporting process.

All test scores are reported as Pass or Fail. You will receivelimited diagnostic information for each failed division. Thisdiagnostic information indicates areas of relative strength andweakness based on the division’s test content. If you fail adivision, you can develop your general study plan according tothese diagnostics prior to retaking the ARE.

NCARB recognizes your rights to control personal informationmaintained by NCARB and Prometric. NCARB policy is designedto safeguard this information from unauthorized disclosure. Toprotect your rights to control score distribution, reports arereleased only to the Board of Architecture for which you arebeing tested. A Board of Architecture may reserve the right tocancel one or more of your test scores, if, in its sole opinion, there is any reason to question its validity.

NCARB and Prometric do not release test scores except for usein research studies that preserve your anonymity or undercompulsion of legal process. However, NCARB reserves theright to anonymously publish selected sample solutions ofvignettes for the benefit of future candidates.

the Passing StandardPassing or failing the ARE depends solely on your level ofperformance in relation to the established point representingentry-level competence.

Careful judgment has been exercised in setting the passingstandards for all NCARB examinations. The passing scores arethe same for every Board of Architecture and are not affectedby the number of people who pass or fail each division of theexamination. There is no fixed percentage of candidateswho pass or fail the ARE.

Multiple-Choice SectionsApproximately every five years, NCARB assembles a group ofarchitects to establish the passing standard for the multiple-choice sections of the ARE. This group of architects is selectedfrom the United States and Canada and represents a generalcross section of practicing architects.

Graphic Vignette SectionsMembers of select NCARB committees establish the gradingstandards for each vignette. Throughout the year, randomlyselected solutions are reviewed by these committees ofarchitects to ensure that the software accurately reflects theprofessional judgment of this group of practitioners.

The computer scoring programs for the graphic vignettes objectively assess your solution based on its conformance tothe specific programmatic requirements of each vignette. The compensatory scoring model evaluates an extensive list offeatures before determining the final score and compensatesfor weaknesses in some areas when strengths in others are demonstrated.

During the review process, you may only challenge a questionanswered incorrectly for a multiple-choice section. Arepresentative from your Board will forward your challenge to a multiple-choice question to NCARB for review andresponse. Any challenge to a graphic vignette will not bereviewed by NCARB.

Depending on the laws of the jurisdiction where you areseeking registration, you may be able to challenge the scorereceived on any ARE division. INTRODUCTION

Graphic Vignette Sections

All divisions of the ARE include problems called vignettes thatare used to assess your knowledge, skills, and abilities in the dif-ferent facets of architectural practice.

You are required to create a solution for each of the 11 vignettes listed below based on the program and code requirements presented with each vignette.

The format of this study aid assumes that users of this guide areprepared to take the ARE and that they want more informationon the format of the examination. The study aid will familiarizeyou with the software used to take the test. This study aid is notto be used as the only source for preparing for the exam as it isnot intended to “teach” the architectural content of the exam’sseparate test divisions. The samples included in each studyguide are presented to illustrate the types of graphic vignettesdelivered within each division.

Each division study guide includes a sample passing and failingsolution for the vignette(s) that comprises that division of theARE. These sample solutions are formatted similarly to the waythe vignettes appear on the actual examination. The graphicshave been reduced to fit into the study aids; they appear in alarger format within the exam.

The comments included on the sample solutions are intendedto help users identify some of the positive and negative as-pects of the solutions. These comments do not represent theentire evaluation process. Many deficiencies may not be notedat all; however, the overall passing or failing scores are realistic, relevant, and accurate.

While the Architect Registration Examination has been designed to be taken by candidates who do not use this study aid to prepare themselves, we hope that you will find it useful in your preparations for this important stage inyour career.

Practice Software for Graphic VignettesThis study aid does not contain the practice software for thegraphic sections, which can be downloaded, free of charge, from the Council’s web page (www.ncarb.org).

The practice program for the graphic vignettes allows you the opportunity to become familiar with the software interface before you schedule a testing appointment. You can download the practice program and from NCARB’sweb site at www.ncarb.org, free of charge. Candidates are encouraged to frequently check NCARB’s web site in order todownload the latest version of the practice program.

The practice program for the graphic vignettes consists of tutorials, directions, and one practice vignette for each of the11 vignettes. The tutorials have been developed to help youlearn how to use the features of the computer software to create solutions for the graphic vignettes. you should spendas much time as necessary practicing with the softwarebefore taking your examination, even if you feel comfortable using other computer and/or graphic drawing programs.

Prior knowledge of CAD or other graphic drawing programs is not necessary, as there will be differences between the drawing tools you use in the examination and the software you are familiar with.

Snaps and GridsAll vignettes contain a pre-set, hidden grid that allows the objectsyou draw or place to align automati-cally. The grid dimensions have beenset with each particular vignette inmind. On vignettes such as the SiteDesign vignette, you may not noticethat there is a grid because the objects you draw and place can belaid out anywhere on the site. On theother hand, the Mechanical & Electrical Plan vignette has a veryobvious grid to help guide youwhen placing objects. In this vignette, the hidden grid makes itobvious that elements are eitherright on the ceiling grid or clearlynot on the grid. This prevents youfrom placing an object close but not quite in alignment.

You are responsible for being as accurate as possible when drawingyour solutions. More accurate information will result in more accurate scoring. Using the “Zoom”tool and the “Full Screen Cursor” maymake it easier to produce more accurate solutions. A “Check” tool isprovided in several vignettes to helpyou identify problem areas, such asoverlapping elements.

Tolerances are built into each scoring program to allow for slight graphic inaccuracies. Thesetolerances vary from vignette to vignette based on the importance of the feature being evaluated.
