Keynote speakers

Professor Bart CurrieProfessor in Medicine, Northern Territory Medical Program, Menzies School of Health Research and Infectious Diseases Physician, Royal Darwin HospitalBart Currie is an infectious diseases and public health physician at Royal Darwin Hospital and Professor in Medicine at the Northern Territory Medical Program, Flinders and Charles Darwin Universities. He is also Program Leader for Tropical and Emerging Infectious Diseases at the Menzies School of Health Research, Director of Rheumatic Heart Disease Australia and Director of Hot North, a collaborative project aimed at improving health outcomes in the tropical north of Australia. Bart was first a member of the antibiotic guideline writing group for the sixth edition in 1991. He has been on every subsequent expert group, including the current 16th edition, which will be published in 2019.

Associate Professor Kirsty BuisingAssociate Professor and Deputy Director, National Centre for Antimicrobial Stewardship, Peter Doherty Institute, University of MelbourneKirsty Buising is an infectious diseases physician working for the Victorian Infectious Diseases Service (VIDS). She is Deputy Director of the National Centre for Antimicrobial Stewardship and chief investigator for the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) funded Centre for Research Excellence in Antimicrobial Stewardship. Kirsty serves on advisory groups at state, national and international levels in the areas of antimicrobial stewardship, guideline development and healthcare associated infection. Kirsty joined the antibiotic guideline expert group for the 15th edition published in 2014 and is a member of the current expert group.

Dr Ken HarveyAssociate Professor, School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University, MelbourneKen Harvey is a microbiologist and public health physician, currently working at the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at Monash University, where he continues his lifetime active interest in the promotion and regulation of therapeutic goods. Ken was a member of the expert group that drafted the WHO “Ethical Criteria for Medicinal Drug Promotion”. He has been awarded life membership of Choice, the leading consumer advocacy group in Australia, for services to the consumer movement and the 2016 ANZAAS Medal for contribution to science which goes beyond normal professional activities. Ken was one of the five founder writing group members of the Antibiotic Guidelines in 1978. He was on the Antibiotic Guidelines writing group from the first to the sixth edition in 1991.

Professor Paul GlasziouDeputy Chair of the Board of Directors of Therapeutic Guidelines Ltd, Professor of Evidence-Based Medicine and Director, Centre for Research in Evidence-Based Practice, Bond UniversityPaul Glasziou is Professor of Evidence-Based Medicine at Bond University and a part-time general practitioner. He was the Director of the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine in Oxford from 2003-2010. His key interests include identifying and removing the barriers to using high quality research in everyday clinical practice. He is the author of six books related to evidence based practice and is the recipient of an NHRMC Australia Fellowship which he commenced at Bond University in July, 2010. Paul was a member of the antibiotic guideline expert group for the 11th and 12th edition and has been a Director of the Board of Therapeutic Guidelines Ltd since 2011.

Professor Lindsay GraysonDirector of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, Austin Health and Professor of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, University of MelbourneLindsay Grayson is Director of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology at Austin Health and Professor of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at the University of Melbourne. Lindsay is immediate past-President of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases and past-Chair of the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents & Chemotherapy (ICAAC) Program Committee for the American Society for Microbiology. He has a longstanding interest in antimicrobial resistance and infection control. Lindsay joined the antibiotic expert group for the 12th edition published in 2003 and has been on every subsequent group, including the current 16th edition.

Dr Sue PhillipsChief Executive Officer, Therapeutic Guidelines LtdSue Phillips is Chief Executive Officer at Therapeutic Guidelines Ltd and Honorary Adjunct Associate Professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine at Bond University. Sue has a long standing interest in guideline development and research translation. She was Interim Executive Director of the NHMRC’s National Institute of Clinical Studies from 2008-2010 and a Trustee of the Board of the Guidelines-International-Network (G-I-N) from 2009-2016. She was appointed Vice-Chair of the G-I-N Board from 2014-2016. Sue has been the Chief Executive Officer of Therapeutic Guidelines Ltd since 2012.

Event chair

Dr Liz MarlesBoard of Directors of Therapeutic Guidelines LtdLiz Marles is the former President of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and has been a member of the RACGP Council since 2008. Liz is Deputy Director of the Hornsby General Practice Unit, which specialises in GP Teaching, particularly registrar remediation and prevocational education. For the past 15 years Liz has also been a GP at the Aboriginal Medical Service in Redfern, where she is a GP supervisor with a special interest in diabetes, and presenter in the Aboriginal Health training component of GP Synergy’s registrar teaching program. Liz is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and was a foundation Director on the General Practice Education and Training Board. She is passionate about general practice training, Aboriginal Health and the future of general practice. She has been a Director of the Board of Therapeutic Guidelines Ltd since 2013 and Chair of the Board since 2017.
