Welcome to Camagüey city, capital city of Camagüey province. it is approximately 550 km east from havana (an hour of flight) and it is considered as the most Mediterranean city of Cuba as it is situated in the very heart of the Camagüey territory, even though it was first a coastal city. it was founded in the north part of the region, in Punta del guincho, nuevitas. soon after, it was moved to the Caonao river banks and it was finally settled between Tínima and hatibonico rivers.

one of the first cities built by the spaniards in Cuba and latin america in 1514, it was named santa María del Puerto del Príncipe which is a reminder of its first settlement. its current name –Camagüey- is an indo-Cuban voice that makes reference to the Camagua tree (that grows in low areas).

The historic center of the city is the largest in the country. it was pronounced national Monument in the past century and its oldest section was pronounced World heritage by unesCo in 2008.

after 500 years, the city is a mix of constant transformation of past and modernity improved and preserved as a gift to future generations. now, half a millennium old, a great part of the city heritage sections (the oldest parts of the city and the commercial area) has a renovated touch, with its historic, architectural and environmental values.

The plazuelas. others are dead end. but all arise an intimate and fascinating atmosphere that has always been typical of Camagüey. a city seemingly stuck in time. in the first half of the nineteenth Century, the dirt streets and plazas in the downtown area were paved with bricks or stones. as the years went by, however, aqueduct and sewage works; as well as the street car system on the main streets caused deterioration of the original pavement. The original stone pavement used in some parts of the city then was very similar to the one observed nowadays in Trinidad.

newer than the tinajones (a kind of earthenware jar), the granite cobblestones brought from norway to pave our main streets, gave Camagüey another distinguishing touch. Cobblestones perfectly fit the urban layout of the city, resulting in beautiful figures leading the way of Camagüey-borns and foreigners.

Camagüey recalls a medieval city as you stroll down the cobble stone streets and get lost in the labyrinths of its peculiar and irregular urban layout. The arrangement of the streets is compared to a shattered plate or a spider web, which is why many people use maps or choose the company of a city connoisseur.

The streets, alleys and abundant unannounced plazas of all sizes and shape make Camagüey urban layout unique in the country. sometimes it is compared to old andalusia cities. narrow and mostly short alleys end up in plazas and

Callejón Funda del CaTre once named Poza del Mate, this alley led to a playground situated on the banks of the hatibonico river. This is the narrowest callejón (alley) of colonial Camagüey and dates from the first decade of the 19 century, maybe even older.

Callejón sin salida (no Way ouT alley)This alley, as shown it is very name, used to have only one access, through lope recio st. (former la Merced). it dates from the 18th Century and was also known as Callejón de la gallería. it is located at the end of la Merced Church and was the only one in downtown with such characteristics.

Callejón de la Miseria (Misery alley)The shortest of the city owed this name to its shortness. it connects Martí street with the broad section of hermanos agüero street, and it is near bedoya and el Carmen plazas. its current name is Tula oms.

Calle rePúbliCa.This street of straight layout whose ancient name was Calle de la reina (The Queen street) was an attempt to organize the city in a renaissance style. it was a model of modernity as it became an area for merchants and traders.

Calle MaCeovisitors will come across a few colonial features on this street. The commercial boom of the 19th century turn this street into the center of department stores and other businesses, without major architectonic transformations. The 20 century, however, witnessed the city renovation with stained glass windows and other architectonic styles of the time, under continuous improvement nowadays. one of the most remarkable examples of verticality is the grand hotel building. From the top, observers can have a nice view of the ample urban heritage built throughout the centuries.

avenida de la liberTad.it was made in the 19 century, starting at the old hatibonico river bridge and ending at la Caridad Church. nowadays it is flanked by elegant buildings with adjacent porches. The Palacio de los Matrimonios (house for weddings), once called la virginia ranch, is situated on the first section of the avenue.

avenida de los MárTires( MárTires avenue) it is the main access to la vigía neighborhood. it is acknowledged for its wide adjacent porches that give shelter to walkers from the rain and the sun, and allow local dwellers to talk in peace. it was named after the martyrs of the independence wars.

Calle del CrisTo (CrisTo sTreeT)This street has a peculiar element, it is the only road that starts at a church and ends at another church, from iglesia Parroquial Mayor (Cathedral) to santo Cristo del buen viaje Church which is next to the general graveyard, the oldest in the country.

Pirates in Puerto Príncipe

Many of the legends and stories arise from the assaults and attacks of pirates to the city; then named Puerto Príncipe. Many people have interpreted the city’s labyrinthine streets as a means to confuse the unwanted pirates.

The first pirate was jacques de sores who wandered around the north coast before he landed in his final destination, havana, in 1555. he stole cheese, cattle, tasajo (salted dried beef), and even a group of outraged women he left behind in Cayo Coco.

The famous henry Morgan assaulted and took Puerto Principe in 1668. he took great loot with him after he set part of the city on fire.

in 1679 the city was looted once again, but this time by the French Francois de granmont, known as Captain sonda who briefly occupied Puerto Príncipe. his compatriot, jean laffite who sailed through the waters of the gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean sea was injured and captured by the spanish troops in February, 1823. Then he was brought to the ward for whites in san juan de dios hospital from where he fled leaving his crutches at the door.

Piracy, however, had its positive side, as settlers were favored with the ransom business that triggered the local economy. diego grillo, born Principeño engaged in the pirate adventures.

The former village of Puerto Príncipe had gained great economic momentum. renowned lineage families and wealthy landowners were part of the population of the city. This high class society used to interact with the islander and peninsular aristocracy. The children of the well off families were even sent to havana or europe to study which determined certain cultural economic political and social development in that part of the island.

When the revolution triumphed in 1959, important cultural and social programs made possible the development of the city.

The facts that took place in the city are self-explanatory:

The first Cuban literary work, espejo de Paciencia, was written in Puerto Príncipe (between 1604 and 1608) by Canary islander silvestre de balboa-Troya y Quesada who was a scribe of the town councilThe Camagüey graveyard, opened in 1814, is the oldest of Cuba and it still operates. it has many monumental values and it is the resting place of many personalities.spain gave great importance to Puerto Príncipe for it was given the title of city and the use of the coat of arms in 1817. The royal court of Puerto Príncipe which was previously settled on la española island was then temporarily moved to the city in the 19th century.

The first part of the railroad from Camagüey to nuevitas was opened in 1864. it was the second railroad built in the country.

on october 5, 1890 the electricity services were initiated in Camagüey. it was the third city to enjoy electric power after Cárdenas and havana.

out of havana the first radio broadcast took place in Camagüey in january 1924.

one of the greatest historic facts of former Puerto Príncipe was the deed made by the two spanish Mariano barberán and joaquín Collar in 1933, who set out on a plane journey from sevilla to Camagüey.The university of Camagüey was the first in the country built by the revolutionary government in 1967.Camagüey is the only Cuban territory whose inhabitants are known in three different ways: Camagueyans (those born in Camagüey) principeños (because of Puerto Príncipe) and agramontinos (because of Mayor general ignacio agramonte, a hero of the independence war).

Camagüey is also famous for its many legends, some of them quite moving, which is why this city is also said to be legendary.

stories like that of the beautiful mulata dolores rondón who rather married a spanish officer, instead of the barber and poet agustín de Moya are told in this city’s colonial porches, in the moonlight or under the dim candle lights. she died poor but the famous epitaph on her grave immortalized her.

The aura blanca (white vulture) is one of the legends that taught us about humility and altruism. after the death of benefactor Padre valencia, the sick people of san lázaro hospital were neglected. one day an aura blanca was found there and a lot of people said that the bird meant the soul of the friar that had returned to protect the lepers.

visitors to the city also come across the famous story of the holy sepulcher at the nuestra señora de la Merced Church: after his son’s death, don Manuel agüero y ortega became a friar and donated part of his wealth (jewels) to the church of la Merced, from which the was made.

The legend of tinajón is probably the most widely told and recalled by the locals. it is a symbol of the city of a utensil used to collect water. visitors and locals drank water from the tinajones. according to the tradition if strangers drink tinajon water they will always return to the city.

Camagüey was named after the indian chief Camaguebax who kindly welcomed conquerors. They killed him and threw his body from the Tuabaquey hill in sierra de Cubitas. his blood colored red the ground of the area.

There are other legends like those of indio bravo, Cruz de sal, epitafio a joaquin de agüero, the Cuatro Palmas, the stories of la soledad and la Merced temples, the san juan, semana santa among others. The art representatives of the city gathered all these stories in the Parque de las leyendas.

Camagüey has always been known as sharing a wide cultural legacy.Cradle of poets, virtuous musicians and leading exponents of all cultural expressions, Camagüey shows its potential through a network of cultural centers and events, museums, exhibition galleries and Casa de la Trova Patricio ballagas.

The city has the privilege of hosting the second classic ballet company in the country, the renowned ballet de Camagüey. Camagüey also houses the contemporary dance company endedans and folkloric dance companies such as Camagua, Maraguán, Caidije, and the Conjunto Folclórico de Camagüey.

Moreover, there are concert, chamber and symphonic orchestras. also other vocal groups, like desandann, have been wise enough to artistically preserve the feelings from the immigrant haitians.

several festivals and events take place in Camagüey: the simposio internacional de Cerámica, the Festival nacional de Teatro, feria arte Plaza, Fiesta de barro y Fuego, Festival de la Carcoma, Fiesta del Tinajón, san juan Camagüeyano, semana de la Cultura and film critics workshop which are the best exponents of the cultural life of the city.

Camagüey history, from its foundation to the date, has been enriched by several personalities whose work is appreciated either by their fellow countrymen or abroad.

ignacio agramonte loynaz, the most memorable of all Camagüey heroes, Chief of the Cuban troops in Puerto Príncipe, is still the most inspiring due to his nobility, courage and love for Cuba. his relationship with his wife, amalia simoni, is an example of perseverance, respect, fidelity and idolatry; a love that survived even the distance the war brought on them. Their love letters are kept in one of the finest collections ever known in our land.

joaquín de agüero y agüero led a rebellion against spain long before the independence War had begun. For this reason, he was executed along with three of his fellow comrades in the former sabana de Méndez. as a tribute to these noble men, Camagüey people planted a palm tree at each corner of Parque agramonte.

salvador Cisneros betancourt was one of the main leaders of the revolutionary Council of Camagüey. he inherited from his father the noble

title of Marquis of santa lucía ii, in 1846.

Carlos j. Finlay was born in Puerto Príncipe on december 3rd, 1833 (appointed the day of the latin-american Medicine). his discovery about the yellow fever transmitting agent, the mosquito aedes aegypty, completely revolutionized the research field on this disease.

gertrudis gómez de avellaneda arteaga was a famous Camagüey writer who made all Cubans feel proud because of her great literary works. she emphasized her love to Cuba through her lyrical poetry. her great achievements are disputed between Cuba and spain.

nicolas guillén, Cuba’s laureate Poet, vindicated afro-Cuban culture as part of the crossbreeding processes that made possible the creation of the "Cuban color." he is known as the Poet of the son, both a traditional Cuban rhythm and dance.

jorge gonzález allué was a pianist, composer and orchestra conductor born in Camagüey. he wrote more than 300 compositions for different genres including both, popular

and concert music, as well as musical theater and ballet. his song “amorosa guajira” earned him a privileged position in Cuban culture.

Fidelio Ponce de león was an important Camagüey painter who studied at the san alejandro academy of Fine arts. To earn a living he painted movies posters and cigars ads, among other things. his oil paintings were a mixture of elongated, monochromatic figures, abstractions dealing with religion, disease and death. his art has been well recognized by critics and exhibited worldwide.

josé olallo valdés (Father olallo) was a Cuban friar, member of hospitallier order of saint john of god. he devoted much of his life to the care of the sick and wounded, and was known for his patience and gentle treatment as a nurse. When the corpse of ignacio agramonte was brought to the hospital from the battlefield, he recognized it and cleaned it. olallo’s rests burial has been one of the most memorable in Camagüey history because of the amount of people who accompanied his coffin. he was beatified in 2008.

a giant on clay feet, when referring to Camagüey’s buildings, is far from being a pejorative term. This is said because, in Camagüey, buildings of all kind: religious, civil, colonial majestic palaces and even the big-bellied tinajones (earthen jars) have the clay of our land as common element.

Tinajones, tiles and fired brick walls give the city the reddish tinge that nicolás guillén mentions in his poems. The historic downtown district reflects the stamp of a past characterized by the use of clay, largely used due to its resistance and plasticity.

Camagüey colonial architecture reproduces the spanish style by arches of different shapes, multicolor facades, thick pillars, semicircular arcades, stained glasses, big wooden doors and stylized grilles, high prop ceilings, gable roofs, and C-shaped patios.

religious buildings are among the main constructions of the city thanks to their artistic-architectural richness. The naves made of brick, covered with solid barrel vaults, big central towers in the facades and interior arches distinguish their peculiarity.

The large, semicircular arches galleries opened to the central patio have a great arab influence. The grilles of the square windows and the banisters in the interior of the galleries give the construction an impeccable beauty.

some places still keep the original brick floors and caisson ceilings. The terracotta doorjambs, where neighbors sit and chat, remain standing still at the feet of these giants in spite of time.

san juan CaMagüeyano (Carnival) These festivities began in the 17th Century; initially they had a profane nature though they coincided with some religious commemorations. These celebrations are made of parades, dinners, costumes, dancing groups and floats. They are held from june 24th to june 29th. liMones- TuabaQueylocated in sierra de Cubitas, about an hour from the capital city, we find the ecological reserve limones-Tuabaquey, an important wildlife and vegetation refuge considered the largest and best preserved site of the two forest areas existing in the province.

one of the most important geographical features in the zone is the hoyo de bonet, an 80 meters-deep sinkhole. There are other sites with a high patrimonial value such as Pichardo cave pictographs, the best preserved of the Caribbean, and the deepest underground lake system in Cuba.

MáxiMo river WildliFe reFugeat the mouth of Máximo river, in the north of Camagüey, we find the largest Pink flamingos nesting center of the Caribbean. The area is also the resting place of many migratory bird species. its natural values make it hold the ramsar site category.

CroCodile breeding CenTerThis center, located in the north of the territory, allows visitors to receive a detailed explanation on the characteristics of these reptiles and can feed them with their own hands, make a boat trip down Máximo river, go down a cave and enjoy a picnic lunch accompanied by a show that plays afro-Cuban rituals.

Cayo sabinalit’s located in the sabana-Camagüey archipelago. The natural beauty of its beautiful virgin beaches surprises the visitors. it is 335 km2 long and it’s near nuevitas bay, Cayo guajaba and glory bay. it owes its name to the juniper, specie that grows in the place. The most well- known beaches are bonita beach, brave beach and Pine beach.

divingsanta lucia beach shallow waters are ideal for diving: there are about 35 dive sites where you can find shipwrecks from 19th and 20th century as well as a variety of marine species. The diving center’s instructors have organized a show at the entrance of the nuevitas bay channel which is both a challenge and a unique opportunity to see how they feed impressive bull sharks with their bare hands.

ranCho la belén (TourisT FarM)another significant place regarding its natural beauty is the protected area sierra del Chorrillo, located in the south of the province. Within this protected area is la belén Farm. also in this area you can see fossil wood deposits, the only of its kind in Cuba.

Cangilones del río MáxiMoThis interesting spot started forming 28 million years ago. Máximo river has dug up nearly 350 meters of natural pool in the limestone.

Fossil Woodsit consists on a concentration of tree remnants in stumps or parts that have been petrified for more than 3 million years. They are disseminated on 1 hectare; it is a stunning curiosity regarding natural conservation.

santa lucía beach, located some 110 kilometers from the capital city, is the main tourist destination of the province. blessed by nature, it comprises 22 kilometers from Punta de ganado to los Cocos beach being the latter much appreciated because of its privacy.

Facing the ocean, the typical color of its waters and its proximity to one of the largest coral formations worldwide makes it different from other beaches on the north coast of Cuba.
