“Whenever the student is ready the teacher appears”, guided by the
same philosophy and to provide some marketing insights about the
behavior of customers while purchasing grocery products an invited talk
was organised at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow on October
18, 2012. The talk was delivered by Mr. Vinod Misra, who has a rich
experience of 20 years of working with a big wholesaler/ retailer of
grocery products.
The talk was held in a question-answer mode wherein the students asked
questions to which Mr. Vinod replied, happily collating them with his
experiences. How to handle a customer, how to convince a customer, how
to promote a newly added brand, listening to your customers in addition to
patience and smiles are some keys to strengthen relationship with a
customer, elaborated he. According to him 'trust' is the most important
factor which drives customers to his retail outlet from far-flung areas.
Although his outlet happens to be in a very congested locality where it is
impossible to take a four-wheeler, still he is able to attract customers from
distances as large as 20-25 Kilometers, and he gives the credit for this to
the trust which they have developed with the customers in the last 50
years.
“Women are easy to convince and sell to, men with a shopping-list
never deviate from the brand enlisted or if a man does, he does it only
after calling his female household head;” explains the role of females in
Indian shopping scenario. “Demonstration still holds the key,” he
explained and elaborated on how he used it to successfully sell perfumes
and deodorants. He also shared how he increased the sales volume of
certain brands in the last few years, how do the various brands in the
breakfast segment perform, how does the customer behave while
purchasing soaps, cosmetics and other grocery items.
Responding to a question, he said, 'trust' and 'personal bonding with the
customer' will safeguard the interest of unorganized retailers even in the
growing regime of organised retail.

image of a product in the minds of consumers through various channels”.

media such as television, radio , hoardings, Facebook, newspapers,
