Subject: Call for applications for the Carlos J. Finlay UNESCO Prize forMicrobiology

Sir/Madam,

I am pleased to invite your Government to submit nominations for the Carlos J.Finlay UNESCO Prize for Microbiology. The Statutes of the Prize are attachedherewith for your kind information.

Funded by the Government of Cuba, the Prize aims to reward the efforts of anindividual, or of an institution, non-governmental organization or other entity which,through research and development, has made an outstanding contribution to thefield of microbiology and its applications.

The candidates shall be designated by the governments of Member States,through their National Commissions for UNESCO, in consultation with scienceinstitutions and associations, and non-governmental organizations in officialpartnerships with UNESCO and active in relevant fields covered by the Prize.

The application process takes place online via the following link:https:llen.unesco.org/news/unesco-seeking-nominations-carlos-j-finlay-unesco-prize-microbiology-2020. The online applications should be received by UNESCOin English or French by 10 February 2020 at the very latest (midnight, UTC+1).Applications received after the deadline, or through.a different channel will not beconsidered.

UNESCO recommends that this call for applications be made widely known in yourcountry's governmental entities, educational institutions, non-governmentalorganizations, local communities and media likely to be interested.

You may also wish to find attached an explanatory note on the prize and theapplication process. The Secretariat of the Prize (a.fahmi@unesco.org) standsready to address any questions you may have.

Microorganisms have a major impact on all aspects of life. They are used by humans to makesolvents, pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, preservatives, and are fundamental to the process offermentation that produces cheese and bread, for example.

Microorganisms also cause major diseases in animals and plants. Thus, they can affect negativelylivestock well-being and agricultural crops and hence have negative repercussions on the economy.Nonetheless, we still know very little about how microorganisms function and cause diseases. Thedevelopment of vaccines and antibiotics is a branch of microbiology that has enabled people tocounter many diseases, thus strongly increasing human wellbeing and decreasing mortality as wellas increasing crop and livestock yields.

Acknowledging the importance of microbiology for human health and development, the Governmentof Cuba and UNESCO have established a prize in honour of one of the most importantmicrobiologists in history: Carlos J. Finlay (Carnaquey, 3 December 1833 - La Havana, 20 August1915). His innovative research on infectious diseases and especially his work on yellow fever havehad huge benefits for humankind.

The Carlos J. Finlay UNESCO Prize rewards the efforts of an individual, or of an institution, non-governmental organization or other entity which, through research and development, has made anoutstanding contribution to the field of microbiology and its applications. In so doing, the Governmentof Cuba and UNESCO aim to encourage research and development of microbiology.

There have been many famous scientists who have won the prize since its establishment in 1976,two of whom went on to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
