62...........

We are excited to bring you the 2011-2012 Gryph Guide. This is the Department of Athletics’ offi cial guide to Fitness and Recreation Programming. It also includes the Gryphon Home Schedule for our Football, Basketball, Hockey and Volleyball teams.

Regular physical activity through fi tness and recreation offers many physical benefi ts, and it also offers emotional and psychological benefi ts. Physical, emotional, and psychological health is very important during a busy academic year. Physical activity can help you stay more positive, focused, and alert. This is important for learning! Studies also suggest that tiring our bodies with a good work out can help us fall asleep faster and enables us to sleep more deeply – which will in turn improve your immune system so that you are sick less during the school year. Physical activity relieves stress, which is essential for a successful academic year.

There are important social benefi ts of joining us! Working out or watching a game with friends will make you feel more connected to campus life.

We are always looking for ways to improve our programming and to ensure that we are offering the activities that our students want. If you have ideas and suggestions, or have general feedback, please do not hesitate to contact us. We would love to hear from you!

We hope that you will fi nd the time this year to JOIN us to PLAY and to CHEER. Enjoy your year and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Tom KendallDirector, Department of Athletics

Our VisionTo provide programs and services that will enhance the student experience and enable participation in activities ranging from recreation to high performance athletics. We also connect with the community of Guelph to provide access to facilities and programs that will satisfy their needs. We are committed to building healthier bodies and stronger minds, leading to enhanced academic performance, personal growth, empowerment and the development of the whole person. The Department of Athletics contributes to the education process, by delivering a diverse spectrum of physical activities, encompassing instruction, self-directed recreation, group endeavors, lifestyle & health initiatives, and high performance opportunities.

Director’s Message 9 Tom Kendall

Aikido is a Japanese art of self-defense, which promotes the well-being & coordination of mind & body suitable for both men & women. It functions by guiding & utilizing the force of an attack including exercises with ken (sword) and jo (stick), but the main emphasis is on unarmed defense against unarmed/armed attack. Aikido develops suppleness, resilience & quick refl exes rather than ‘static’ strength and can be quite strenuous. Regular practice builds stamina & endurance. Aikido has a hierarchical structure of ranks, if desired you can progress through these ranks. The World Aikido Federation through the Canadian Aikido Federation certifi es all ranks awarded at Guelph. This form of martial art emphasizes the mind, body, and ki (the inner energy) and utilizes them in harmony to train the way of swords. Muay Thai (20 classes)

Muay Thai, the national sport of Thailand, is a full contact ring sport, like boxing, in which competitors use all manner of punches, kicks, elbows & knees to defeat their opponents. Students of this dynamic martial art fi nd its techniques incredibly simple & practical, explaining its increasing popularity among Mixed Martial Arts athletes for self-defense. Training is typically conducted by hitting pads, & sparring but is not required of students. Although Muay Thai is an excellent choice for competition & street self-defense, many students practice Muay Thai simply for the excellent workout that it provides; a very challenging combination of aerobic & anaerobic activity with wide-ranging benefi ts in endurance, strength & fl exibility. Training is conducted in a safe & inclusive manner, providing challenges for all ability levels. Participants should be in good physical condition & participants must have their own hand wraps. RingetteWe fi rst became established during the 2007-08 school year. Our club consisted of about 30 players that attended weekly scrimmages, and 15 girls attended the University Challenge Cup tournament in Ottawa to win the Gold Medal in the Tier Two division. Ringette is a rapidly growing sport, particularly within the University and College across Canada. It is our club team’s mission to keep up with this growth, by fostering ringette involvement in both a friendly and competitive environment. We provide an opportunity for experienced Rinegtte players to play at a competitive level, and an opportunity for interested participants with little to no experience to learn to love the game.

League play, including playoff s, ends just before exams start. At the same time we organize a ladder. All players participating in league play are automatically on the ladder. However you can join and only take part in ladder play if you wish. This gives you a tag on the ladder board showing your ladder position. Underwater HockeyUnderwater hockey was fi rst invented by divers in the mid 1950s. It is a non-contact sport in which two teams compete in a pool to maneuver a puck across the bottom and into the opposing team’s 3 meter long net. It is played with snorkelling gear and a short stick; diff erent from a regular hockey stick. Our team travels all over Ontario, Quebec and even into the USA to attend tournaments. We are also proud to have hosted an annual international Underwater Hockey tournament for over the past 25 years. We play pickup style hockey and most members play at a beginner or intermediate level. If you’re tired of swimming laps, this sport is for you! New players are always welcomed and encouraged to come give the sport a try. Your fi rst time out is always free. Underwater hockey is a great way to try a new sport, meet interesting people and have an amazing anaerobic workout!
