• The Physical Topology of a network refers to the configuration of cables, Computers and other peripherals.

• The Logical Topology determines the way in which Data actually passes via network from one device to other

Linear/Bus Topology

• A linear Bus Topology consist of a main run of cable with a terminator at each and all nodes are connected to the linear cable

Bus Topology

Advantages

• Easy to connect a computer or Peripheral to a Linear Bus.

• Requires less cable length than a star topology

Disadvantages

• Entire Network shuts down if there is a break in the main cable.

• Terminators are required at both ends of the backbone cable.

• Difficult to identify the problem if the entire network shuts down.

Star Topology

• A Star topology is designed with each node connected directly to a central network hub or concentrator

• Data on a Star network passes via the Hub before continuing to its destination.

Star Topology

Advantages

• Easy to install and wire• No disruptions to the

network then connecting or removing devices.

• Easy to detect faults and to remove parts.

Disadvantages

• Require more Cable length.• If the Hub Fails, nodes

attached are Disabled.• More Expensive then Bus

Topologies because of the cost of the Hub.

Ring Topology

• In Ring Topology each node connects to exactly two other nodes, forming a single continuous pathway for signals through each node - a ring. Data travels from node to node, with each node along the way handling every packet.

• Because a ring topology provides only one pathway between any two nodes, ring networks may be disrupted by the failure of a single link. A node failure or cable break might isolate every node attached to the ring.

Ring Topology

Advantages

• Handles large Volume of traffic.

• Very Reliable and offer great speed.

• Provides a good communication over a long Distance.

• No terminators are Required.

Disadvantages

• More cable Wires required.• One Faulty device affects the

entire Network.• Addition and Change of Device

can affect the Network.

Mesh Topology

• In mesh Topology Each Devices is connected to each and every Node in the network with many redundant.

• Data sent by the device can take any possible path to reach the destination.

• Interconnection of at least two path to and from every node.

Mesh Topology

Advantages

• Easy to Detect the Faulty Device.

• Entire Network does not get affected by one Faulty Device.

• Centralized management is not required as in star topology.

Disadvantages• More cabling is required as

compared to bus , star and ring topology.

• Each link from one device to another requrires an individual Network Interface Card

• Data carrying capacity is underutilized unless all devices are transmitting almost constantly.

Coclusion

• Understanding the different topologies and networks available will allow any business or individual to determine the network that will best suit the business and individual need and will help to establish the correct expectation.
