Kapa Haka will continue over the next two terms culminating in participation in the North Canterbury Cultural festival towards the end of Term 3. Kapa Haka is to not only learn about other cultural practices, it requires the children to read, sing and move in rhythmic patterns portraying the words through action. It requires the children to develop and use their memories and use both sides of their brain. Thus, we have a neurological and physical workout. GRETA VALLEY SCHOOLSKILLS FOR LIFE!

Dear Parents

END OF TERM CELEBRATIONWhat a great fun time we had at our student parent Tee Ball game on the last Friday of Term 1. Thank you all for your willingness to participate and join in with the children. This term we may need to have either a game of Force back or football. I have updated the Website with last terms photos. Go to http://www.gretavalleyschool.com/

KAPA HAKAKapa Haka began today with the majority of Year 4-8 students participating in the session at Omihi School. We are grateful for the charitable funding raised to be able to hire our tutor. We look forward to watching the children’s development here.

ELGREGO SHOWOur first trip away is this coming Friday 4th May in the afternoon to see El Gregoe in Cheviot who will put across his message against bullying in a magical way. This is the beginning to the National Anti-Bullying Week, which begins on May 14th. Thank you to all those who have volunteered to transport students to and from Cheviot. We will leave Greta Valley School at 12.45 at the latest to arrive in time for the show beginning at 1.30pm. The transport list was sent out today.

TECHNOLOGYOver the next three terms, we have our Year 7/8 students attending Technology at Hurunui College on Monday mornings from 9.30am – 12.30pm. They will be leaving school at 8.50am. Technology is described by the “New Zealand Curriculum 2007” as invention by design. It provides a range of practical and intellectual experiences to develop products and systems that address real life situations. This helps our children and young adults keep pace with the needs of an ever-changing society. Hurunui College facilitates this type of learning in the technology department by providing real life problem solving in the following contexts; Food and Nutrition, Soft Materials, Hard Materials, Design and Visual Communication and Digital Technologies. We look forward to seeing some of our children’s technological creations.

CROSS COUNTRYThe school cross-country is to be held on Tuesday 15th May down at the Scargill Domain. Training has been underway for some time now and we look forward to some competition from Waikari School. We understand that gumboots are great to wear to school as the weather gets colder and wetter, but please ensure your child also brings suitable shoes for running in as well, as they will be having cross country practice every day.

CLUSTER FLIESI don’t know if you’ve been inundated with cluster flies but the school has been over the holiday break. I just want to acknowledge the great work our cleaner and her partner did to have our school presentable for us when we returned. The flies were and still are a persistent nightmare. Thanks Christine and Mark.
