Hopefully, by the time you’re reading this newsletter, we’re breaking ground for our new Pet Pantry building. The Monmouth County SPCA Pet Pantry helps pet owners experiencing difficult economic times keep their beloved pets rather than surrender them to a shelter by providing pet food and supplies. What began as a temporary relief outreach after Superstorm Sandy to help impacted families care for their pets, turned into a permanent program that helps keep people and their pets together. During economic hardship, families often must choose between feeding and caring for their pets and paying household bills or purchasing human food. The Pet Pantry currently serves around 800 families and approximately 2,000 animals throughout Monmouth County and our surrounding communities. To date, we’ve distributed over 100,000 lbs. of pet food and supplies, of which 95% have been donated. We estimate that without the program, more than 350 animals would have been surrendered to our shelter. Our former site for operations had reached its limit and thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we have raised the funding needed to make our vision for a permanent Pet Pantry building a reality! This new building will give us the space we need to continue to protect and advocate for all animals, promote responsible pet ownership, and Save More Lives. The building will also provide the MCSPCA with critically needed extra space to shelter and care for additional homeless animals. The facility will allow us to house approximately 45 more dogs while they wait to find their forever homes. All animals deserve to stay in the loving environment they have come to call home. Thank your for helping us keep people and their pets together! Additionally, our new Middletown Adoption Center at Petco is opening soon. We appreciate this opportunity from Petco to expand our outreach and find even more forever homes! This has been a very important year for the MCSPCA as we celebrate a special milestone, the fifth anniversary of our Homeward Bound Adoption Center. Since our state-of-the-art facility opened five years ago, we have saved the lives of more than 20,000 homeless animals. We don’t do this work alone. Your support has made every life saved possible. Already this year, you have helped us save the lives of more than 1,800 animals. Thank you on behalf of all of the animals whose lives you have touched!

Additionally, our new Middletown Adoption Center at Petco is opening

soon.

On Saturday, June 14 we celebrated our biggest and best Fur Ball yet! Over 600 guests joined us for our 2014 Fur Ball, A Night for Paws at Stillwell Stables in Colts Neck, NJ. The evening broke records and raised $450,000 for the animals in our care! A special thank you to our Honorees Laura and Richard Saker, President and CEO of Saker ShopRites, Inc. and to our event host Carol Stillwell.

The proceeds from this event will directly help us provide care and find forever homes for the thousands of homeless animals that pass through our shelter every year. Thank you for helping to give them the second chance they deserve.

Stay tuned for additional details about next year’s Fall Fur Ball!!

The MCSPCA Pittie Project is in full swing and has already enabled more than 300 spay/neuter surgeries for "Bully Breeds" this year. The Pittie Project’s mission is to improve the lives of Bully Breeds in the community and keep these loving and often misunderstood dogs out of the shelter.

In celebration of this important program, the first Pittie Festival was held on June 21st. Bully Breed companions came out to show their love for their "Bulls"! The festival was supported by many local vendors and rescue groups. Twenty-seven Bully Breeds were microchipped with funds donated by supporters of the program.Thank you to the many volunteers & donors who make it all possible. With your support, we can accomplish even more and save more lives!

The Pittie Project provides:• Free spay/neuter within Project guidelines• Vaccinations, microchips, leashes• Training• Humane Education to combat animal cruelty & dog fighting• Free pet food through the MCSPCA Pet Pantry

Things were not so easy for Alfalfa before he came to the MCSPCA as a stray. Alfalfa had likely spent most of his life outside before coming to the shelter. He was always a very friendly and playful guy, but he became stircrazy at the shelter. He could be a little “swatty” when things weren’t going his way. The staff knew he was frustrated, so he was given lots of time to roam the screened porch. It was obvious he longed to be outdoors. After two long years, a wonderful volunteer found him a home as a part of our Backyard Buddy Program.

The Monmouth County SPCA Backyard Buddy program promotes the adoption of feral cats or cats that thrive in outdoor environments. Alfalfa was transported to an awesome organic farm where he has a fabulous barn and enjoys life with other MCSPCA alumni and lots of other farm animals!

The Monmouth County SPCA gives every animal the second chance they deserve to find a loving home of their own. After two long years of waiting, our beautiful Sky finally found her forever family. Sky was still nursing puppies when she was surrendered to the SPCA. Her cute pups were quickly adopted, but Sky waited patiently for two long years to find her match. Sky wasn’t putting her best “paw” forward for potential adopters. She wasn’t trained and was difficult to manage. Fortunately, our dedicated staff and volunteers worked tirelessly to give

Sky the time and care she needed to be the dog she was always meant to be. Our behavior trainer worked with her to develop very specific protocols and positive reinforcement to address her behavior. Without the specific training she received, Sky wouldn’t have overcome her fears and learned to trust. It took time, but she was rehabilitated and adopted to a family that adores her!

Sky now sleeps snuggled on the couch in her loving home. We are so proud of this story. We want to be able to do this for many other dogs. We can only do that with your support.

Long Timers Find HomesAs an open admissions facility, the MCSPCA gives every animal that enters our shelter the second chance they deserve. Because of the support we receive from friends like you, we are able to give every animal in our care all the time they need to find a home of their own, whether it takes two days, two months or two years.

Since adoptable animals stay at the shelter until they find the right home, we need your help along the way to give every animal that comes through our doors the loving care they need to have a wonderful life. We are so proud to share that two of our wonderful long-timers found their forever homes. Please read their incredible stories below.

ALFALFA

Your support allows us to provide underdogs and cats like Alfalfa and Sky with all the time and extra care they need to find their forever homE.

Thanks to our very generous supporters and a grant made possible by the ASPCA, we have a furnished pet transport van and we are transporting dogs and puppies from overcrowded shelters in the South where they face risk of euthanasia. You may wonder why we are transporting animals from shelters in the South. At the MCSPCA, compassion has no borders and our mission is to protect and advocate for all animals. We are proud to give dogs from high-risk shelters the second chance they deserve! In addition, bringing in puppies and dogs
