The Portland Timbers return to the Rose City coming off of back-to-back wins in a span of four days, playing host to the New England Revolution on Saturday, June 6, at Providence Park. Kickoff for Saturday’s game is set for 7:30 p.m. (Pacific) and will feature a live broadcast on KPDX and radio broadcast on 750/102.9 The Game and in Spanish on LaGranD 93.5 FM.

Following the club’s first-ever victory at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park over the Colorado Rapids on May 30, the Timbers (5-5-4, 19pts) face their second Eastern Conference opponent in their last three matches, after a 1-0 shutout win against D.C. United in a midweek game on May 27 at Providence Park. Portland has earned a win or a draw in nine of their last 10 games (4-1-5) at home and enter Saturday’s match with just one home loss (2-1-3) at Providence Park this season. Portland has compiled a record of 18-5-17 in regular-season home games since 2013.

Starting on Saturday, Portland will play five of its next seven regular-season matches at Providence Park.

Against the Rapids, midfielder Jack Jews-bury scored his 25th career MLS goal in the final minute of second-half stoppage time as Portland earned a dramatic, 2-1 win against Colorado on May 30. With the win, the Timbers have earned consecutive victories for the first time this season (May 27-30). Midfielder Gastón Fernández scored the opening goal of the match in the 38th minute as forward Maximiliano Urruti notched the assist. The pair have each tallied at least a goal or an assist in the last two matches for the club.

in its last 12 matches. The Revolution rank third in MLS in goals (20), led by forward Charlie Davies’ five goals. A total of eight different play-ers have registered at least one goal for head coach Jay Heaps’ side, including five players who have recorded multiple goals.

Following Saturday’s match, the Timbers travel to face Cascadia-rival Seattle Sounders FC in the fourth round of the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, June 16, at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Wash.; kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (Pacific).

Against New EnglandSaturday’s match marks the sixth all-time

meeting between the Timbers and the Revolution and just the third meeting all-time between the two clubs in Portland. The Timbers have registered a 1-1-3 record all-time against New England and are unbeaten in the two previous meetings (1-0-1) at Providence Park, both shut-outs. Saturday’s match will be the first meeting between the two teams at Providence Park in two years since a scoreless draw on May 2, 2013. Each of the last two games have finished in a draw, including a 1-1 tie on Aug. 16, 2014, at Gillette Stadium that saw Portland defender Liam Ridgewell score his first career goal for the club.

You made the move to Portland from Bristol City in 1978. How did it come about that you made the long trek from England to the Rose City?“Basically what happened was, I was a young player at the time – I was 20 years old – and Don Megson became coach of the Timbers in 1978. Before he became the coach in Portland, he was the coach at Bristol Rovers, which was Bristol City’s main rival and I think he always liked me as a player. I originally came over on a loan spell for the 1978 season and the plan was to go back to England and play after that. I went back to England and played another season and then the Timbers bought my rights from Bristol City. I came back over in March be-fore the start of the next season. As a young player it was a good opportunity to get playing time. I was in the first team squad at Bristol, but I wasn’t getting the playing time, so it was a good opportunity to get some first-team minutes in 1978.”

That ’78 season was pretty successful by most accounts as the Timbers reached the NASL Conference Championship. What do you recall from your first year with the club?“It was a great season. What was good about it was we had a really good group of players. The majority of the players were from Britain and we had a good core of American players, too. There was a lot of positivity about soccer in America at that time. It was a different kind of experience for me. I came over and really enjoyed playing again. At that time, there were some fan-tastic players over here in the league, some were in the latter stages in their careers, but were still good players. It was a step up for me to come over and play. There were some big stadiums and big crowds. We had some big crowds in Portland too especially when the Cosmos or some of the other big-name teams came to town, but the atmosphere

was nothing like it is now. There were a couple games, even with 10,000 or 12,000 fans in the stadium and still the atmosphere was pretty good. I think the fans today know more about the game and they’re more knowledgeable, but for soccer at that time in America it was great and Portland’s not called ‘Soccer City, USA’ for no reason.”

You had a lot of success as a player for Port-land – leading the club’s career record books in points, goals and assists. What comes to mind when thinking about your Timbers career?“I came over to Portland at a good time and I was really fortunate that I got into the team and was starting consistently. The coaches who coached me, Don Megson and Vic Crowe, really gave me a lot of responsibility as a young player. I just really

loved playing for the Timbers and when you’re at a club for five years, it becomes a special place. I left here when I was 25 (when the team folded), so it was probably the toughest time in my career. I had Vancouver, Seattle and San Diego interested in me, but it was tough. I had a lot of friends here, I loved the city. There started to become a

different atmosphere around the league, it was a different kind of feel when the Timbers folded because they were one of the clubs you wouldn’t think would have folded. After the team folded, I played at Seattle, then indoor in San Jose, also went to Minnesota, I was all over the place. The outdoor game was gone and I was playing in the indoor game, which was enjoyable, but the only real option left for soccer in America. I had a family by then and I didn’t have thoughts of going back to Britain, so I tried to make the best

of playing soccer. When I was in St. Louis (playing indoor) and the team folded, that’s when I decided to come back to Portland and do something different. At that time I got the chance to be a player/coach with the Timbers 1989 WSL team with Kasey Keller in goal that year and a lot of other good kids.”

As someone who has been in and around the Timbers organization nearly since its incep-tion, what do you see now when you look at the club? “We came over and it was nearly all players from abroad and there was no real infrastructure. When you look at them now, they have the first team, T2, Timbers U-23s, U-18s, U-16s, it’s a soccer club, and it’s an actual club and not just a team like when I was playing. And with Thorns too, there is an incredible opportunity for young girls and boys to play soccer. To me it’s really reward-ing that soccer has blossomed in the last 30 years and especially in the last five years since the Timbers have moved to MLS, it’s just amazing to see it. It’s also great that they’ve got the Timbers name back. The NASL clubs that retained their old names now in MLS, it’s nice to see that history that comes along with that name, it’s great.”

General Manager Gavin Wilkinson

Gavin Wilkinson, a long-time member of the Timbers organization and a former New Zealand international, serves as the club’s General Manager. He first joined the club as a player for the Timbers’ USL First Division side in 2001, before taking over as the head coach and general manager during the club’s final years in the second division from 2007-10.

As general manager, Wilkinson has formed the Timbers’ deeply integrated, vertical development system, which includes newly added United Soccer Leagues club Portland Timbers 2 (T2), the Portland Timbers U-23s and Timbers Academy teams (U-18, U-16 and U-14). He was instrumental in establishing an innovative partnership with Oregon Youth Soccer Association, which encompasses the statewide Olympic Development Program and regional training centers, as well as the adidas Timbers Alliance. Wilkinson also serves as the general manager for Portland Thorns FC, the 2013 National Women’s Soccer League champions.

During his tenure as the club’s general manager and head coach from 2007-10, Wilkinson assembled a 50-29-39 record over four seasons in the USL First Division/USSF Division-2 Pro League and was a two-time USL First Division Coach of the Year (2007, 2009). He guided the club to three postseason berths, including its only semifinals appearances as a sec-ond-division club in 2007 and 2009. As head coach, Wilkinson oversaw Cascadia Cup (a fan-based derby between Portland, Seattle and Van-couver) titles in 2009, 2010 and again in 2012, and was a two-time recipient of the FieldTurf Coach of the Year for the USL First Division (2007, 2009).

24-game unbeaten streak and winning the Commissioner’s Cup. The Timbers set a new single-season, league record with the impressive streak (14-0-10), surpassing the previous mark of 15 games set in 2005. The club’s record-setting run also ranks among the longest in U.S. Soccer history. Finishing in first place at 16-4-10 (58pts), Portland was awarded the Commissioner’s Cup as the league’s regular-season champion and earned a berth into the USL First Division semifinals.

Wilkinson’s 13-year professional playing career included time with clubs in six different countries, includ-ing Portugal, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. A defender, he joined the reborn Timbers for their inaugural United Soccer Leagues season in 2001, playing in each of the club’s first six seasons and serving the dual role as a player/assistant coach from 2005-06. He finished his playing career ranked among the Timbers’ USL franchise career leaders in games (124) and minutes played (10,181).

A New Zealand native, Wilkinson earned 38 caps with the New Zealand National Team and competed in the 1999 and 2003 FIFA Confederations Cups.

Wilkinson, who holds an “A” coach-ing license from U.S. Soccer, founded the youth club Eastside United, based in Gresham, Ore., in 2001. He helped run the club as its coaching director for many years and now serves as an advisor for the club. In 2010, Eastside United FC’s U-18 boys team (’91 Liver-pool) won the U.S. Youth Soccer U-18 national championship and became the first youth club team from Oregon to win a national title since 1994.

He and his wife, Heather, have two children, Kienan and Brooke.

Head coach Caleb Porter enters his third season with the club in 2015 after guiding the Portland Timbers to re-cord-setting campaigns in his first two years in MLS. Guiding the team to an impressive turnaround season and the club’s first-ever MLS postseason appearance in 2013, Porter helped direct a record-setting offense in 2014 as the Timbers netted 61 regu-lar-season goals, a club record across all eras.

He was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccer-related fig-ure to receive the award since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014,

Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over German power Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park in Portland.

The 2013 MLS Coach of the Year award winner, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active MLS head coaches with a 26-14-28 mark (.588) after leading Portland to double-digits wins in each of his first two seasons. Under Porter’s guidance, the Timbers have made Providence Park one of the toughest places to play in the league, registering the second-fewest home losses in MLS over the last two seasons with a 16-4-14 regular-season mark at Providence Park since 2013. In 2014, the Timbers netted a team-record 61 goals while compiling one of the highest point totals (44) across the final two-thirds of the regular season – recording the highest goal differential (plus-9) of any non-playoff team in MLS history. made its first appearance in CONCACAF Champions League, contesting matches against Alpha United of Guyana and C.D. Olimpia of Honduras during the competition’s group stage.

During Porter’s first season as head coach in 2013, the Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS. In comparison to 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improve-ment in points and an MLS-record 43-goal improve-ment in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season and the Timbers led the league with 15 shutouts. The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park and an MLS single-season record 11 home shutouts. In 2013, Portland qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2011. Additionally, the Timbers made their deepest run in club history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 under Porter’s guidance, reaching the semifinals of the tournament.

Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron (2006-12). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA Col-lege Cup appearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010.

Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University.

As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. He also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games. As a player at Indiana, he was a three-year captain and led the Hoosiers to four conference titles. Porter was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.

Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a de-gree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin and Jake, and a daughter, Stella.

a winning streak of seven straight matches from June 18-

July 8, outscoring opponents 17-5 during the run. Fans took notice,

too, as the team regularly began to draw crowds in excess of 15,000 for most home games – even seeing 27,310 for a 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders on July 29. Portland qualified for the playoffs, one of eight teams in the 20-team league to reach the postseason and matched up against regional rival Seattle in the quarterfinals.

Road to Soccer Bowl ’75On the path to the NASL championship match, the Timbers faced off against Seattle in the quarterfinals – earning passage to the semifi-nals off the head of Tony Betts in overtime. As the Sounders failed to clear a corner kick in the 97th minute, Timbers forward Willie Anderson swung in a cross to Betts, unmarked in front of goal, and the midfielder connected on the game-winning header in front of 31,523 fans at Civic Stadium. The Timbers played host to St. Louis in the semifinals before a record crowd of 33,503 in the Rose City and defeated the Stars 1-0 on a goal from Withe to reach Soccer Bowl ’75 against the Tampa Bay Rowdies in San Jose. The Rose City magic ran out in the title match as the Timbers sustained a 2-0 loss on Aug. 24, 1975 – ending their first-ever season and sparking a passion for soccer in Portland that still burns strong today.

Coaching Staff 2015

Sean McAuley returns for a fourth season as an assistant coach. He joined the club midway through the 2012 season from English club Sheffield Wednesday FC, where he served as a head coach in the club’s academy. McAuley suited up for the second-division Timbers as a player during the 2002 season.

McAuley began his coaching career at Sheffield Wednesday in 2005 and spent six seasons as the club’s Academy head coach, where he oversaw the development of several youth players who went on to sign with the first team.

A native of Sheffield, England, McAuley played professionally for 15 seasons as a defender from 1990-2005. He started his career with Manchester United and played for Hartlepool United, Scunthorpe United, Rochdale and Halifax Town. McAuley appeared in 16 matches for the Timbers in 2002, logging two assists while helping the club make the postseason.

Cameron Knowles returns for a fourth season as an assistant coach for the Tim-bers. A former defender for the second-division Timbers from 2007-10, Knowles joined the coaching ranks in 2012 after a seven-year professional playing career.

Selected by Real Salt Lake in the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft, Knowles played two seasons in MLS before joining the Timbers. In Portland, Knowles was a three-time USL First Division all-league selection and played in 77 games for the club.

From Auckland, New Zealand, Knowles anchored Portland’s backline and played a key role in the Timbers’ USL First Division record-setting, 24-game unbeaten streak in 2009.

Mike Toshack enters his fourth season as the Timbers goalkeeper coach in 2014. He has served as a goalkeeper coach in MLS since 2007, and won MLS Cup with the Houston Dynamo in 2007.

Prior to joining Portland, Toshack was a member of the coaching staffs in Houston (2007-08) and Toronto FC (2009-11). Before working in MLS, the Prescott, Ontario, native was the director of goalkeeping for the Vancouver Whitecaps from 2005-06, helping coach the first team to the USL First Division championship in 2006. Toshack served as an assistant coach with the Montreal Impact from 2002-03.

Jay Vidovich enters his first season as an assistant coach for the Timbers, as well as the head coach of Portland’s USL side, Timbers 2 (T2).

One of the most highly regarded soccer coaches at the collegiate level in the United States and an astute developer of talent, Vidovich spent 21 years as a head coach at Wake Forest University from 1994-2014 and an additional eight years as an assistant coach from 1986-93. Under Vidovich’s guidance, Wake Forest reached the NCAA Tournament in 13 of the past 14 seasons and captured five ACC regular-season championships. The program made four consecutive NCAA College Cup appearances from 2006-2009 and won its first NCAA National Championship in 2007.

From Detroit, Mich., Vidovich was named NSCAA National Coach of the Year in consecutive seasons (2007, 2008) and compiled a 272-121-50 (.670) overall record in 21 years as head coach at Wake Forest.

During the 2015 regular-sea-son schedule, the Timbers will contest matches in two venues in which the team has not previously played a game. Portland earned a 1-0 win over New York City FC on April 19 in the team’s first-ever match at Yankee Stadium and the Timbers will make their first appearance at brand-new Avaya Stadium in San Jose on Aug. 2.

Including road games on April 19 at New York City FC and April 26 at Seattle, the Timbers will travel a minimum distance of 17,776 miles (calculated using direct air distance) in 35 days for MLS regular-season matches.

The Timbers travel for four regular-season road games during the month of May, including two trips to Canada to square off against Montreal (May 9) and Toronto FC (May 23). Fatherhood, times two“It’s twice as hard, for sure. The only thing that’s easier is you have some of the gear, but we had a girl first and a boy second so it definitely didn’t help. The second time was actually harder because we had it pretty easy with our daughter. She was a good sleeper and teethed well and did all the normal stuff and our son has had more problems sleeping and more problems teething and all that.”

Timbers midfielder Will Johnson sustained a fractured tibia and fibula in his right leg on Sept. 27 against Toronto FC and has been putting in countless hours of work to get back onto the field for the Rose City. Despite missing the fi-nal five games of the 2014 season, Johnson still set an MLS-career high in minutes played (2,526) and tallied six goals and two assists while being named an MLS All-Star for a second consecutive season with the Timbers.

The Recovery“It’s tough just from the standpoint of you miss being around the guys, you miss the camaraderie of the group. You’re in a routine every day where you’re around your teammates in the bunker getting ready to go to battle and all of a sudden some-body turns the lights off and you’re on your couch by yourself. It’s a very lonely, kind of depressing state that you’re in for quite a while. Especially with my injury, I couldn’t transfer that depression and anxiety or lonely feeling into any kind of a rehab so that for me was disappointing because I had to let the bones heal. Once I could finally get back on a field, I could channel that energy into a more positive state. The first three months were brutally tough and after that it’s much better.”

Mentors“There’s lots of people. I’m the type of person I try to take a little bit from everybody and really focus on what people’s strengths are and try to take a little piece. Obviously, my parents were always willing to do whatever it took for me to be in the right place at the right time, so it started with them. Then with Dave Richardson and Bret Hall, two guys who ran Sockers FC Chicago, they really helped me transition from a boy who wanted to play professional soccer into a guy who actually had a chance to play profes-sional soccer through tough love and those kind of relationships. My brother, who is 22 months younger than me, we had a lot of good battles. I’d sum it up as my parents, my brother, and Dave Richardson and Bret Hall, they were my coaches who shaped me and gave me the chance to be able to play.”

Head Coach Jay Vidovich On Dec. 18, 2014, T2 named Jay Vidovich as the club’s first head coach for the 2015 USL season. Vidovich, who also serves as an assistant coach for the Portland Timbers first team, arrived in Portland as one of the most highly regarded soccer coaches at the collegiate level in the United States and an astute developer of talent after 21 years leading the Wake Forest University men’s soccer program. The 54-year-old Detroit native saw many of his players at Wake Forest advance to the professional ranks, including 11 first-round MLS SuperDraft selections since 2005. In total, 29 of Vidovich’s Wake Forest play-ers have been selected by MLS clubs during the MLS SuperDraft since 2000.

About USL The 2015 season features the debuts of 13 new USL clubs – seven of which will be owned and operated by MLS clubs – in Austin, Charlotte, Colorado Springs, Louisville, Montreal (Im-pact), New York (Red Bulls), Portland (Timbers), Saint Louis, Salt Lake City (RSL), Seattle (Sounders FC), Toronto (FC), Tulsa, and Vancouver (Whitecaps FC). In total, 24 teams will compete during a seven-month regular season from March-September.

In October 2014, the Portland Timbers announced the formation of Timbers 2 (to be referred to as T2), a profes-sional team that will compete in USL, a division of the U.S. Soccer pyramid below Major League Soccer. Head coach Jay Vidovich and T2 begin competing in USL during the 2015 season and will play their home games at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland.

PORTLAND TIMBERS 2The level just below the Portland Timbers first team on the pyramid, T2 is Portland’s newest ad-dition to the development structure. Playing their matches in the 24-team USL – T2 was founded on Oct. 14, 2014, and is a fully professional team that creates a bridge between the Portland Timbers U-23s Premier Development League (PDL) side and the Timbers first team. Play-ing their home games at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland, the T2 roster will be comprised of a mix of Timbers first-team players on loan to the club, as well as players that possess many dif-ferent qualities and come from varied backgrounds. As well as players that are familiar with wearing the Timbers crest, some experienced profession-als and young players that can spend time de-veloping for the ultimate purpose of reaching the first team. In December, Jay Vidovich was named as the club’s first head coach for the 2015 USL season. Vidovich will lead T2 after 21 seasons as head coach at Wake Forest University, where he became one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history.

The Timbers Academy provides elite youth players from Oregon and South-west Washington advanced training and competitive opportunities against the best youth players across North America.

Timbers Youth Leagues, Tournaments and CampsThe Timbers and OYSA have formed an innovative partnership, which sees the statewide youth soccer organization become a part of the Timbers’ compre-hensive youth development structure. One of the first of its kind, the partnership between the Timbers and OYSA has established top-tier development oppor-tunities for thousands of Oregon’s youth soccer players through OYSA’s club leagues and tournaments. The Timbers provide OYSA and its clubs resources for coaching education and share best practices in player development, creat-ing a unified development philosophy across the state. The MLS club also is the presenting partner of the Oregon State Cup.

The Timbers offer an exciting camp program for soccer players of all ages and skill levels throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. Each camp is cen-tered on age-appropriate exercises and activities designed to develop technical excellence and build a love for the game.

adidas Timbers Training Center


On April 19, 2012, the Portland Timbers unveiled the new adidas Timbers Training Center, a state-of-the-art facility, built as part of a 10-year partnership with Tualatin Hills Parks & Recreation District. The training center features a natural-grass field and is the primary on-field training ground of the Major League Soccer club. Construction is nearly complete on a 2,600-square-foot expansion of the adidas Timbers Training Center. The new space will include additional locker rooms, training areas and office space to serve the Timbers, T2, the Timbers U-23s and the Timbers Academy.

Some of the features of the adidas Timbers Training Center include a 7,000-square-foot indoor facility, with locker rooms for the Timbers first team and development teams, fully-equipped training and recently expanded fitness areas, offices and a spacious lounge/common area for Timbers players.

The grass field, widely regarded as one of the best fields in the state, is a combination of 75 per-cent perennial ryegrass and 25 percent Kentucky bluegrass that is perfectly suited for cooler climates and provides uniform cover, and greater stability, footing and durability.

The adidas Timbers Training Center is located in Beaverton, approximately 10 minutes from Provi-dence Park. It also serves as the training home for the Timbers’ development teams, specifically the Timbers U-23s and the club’s Academy teams.

As part of the public/private partnership with THPRD, the Timbers make an annual donation to the Tualatin Hills Park Foundation and will conduct a series of annual youth soccer camps and coach-es’ clinics at the adidas Timbers Training Center. The training center includes a synthetic, FieldTurf field designated for public use.

A new grass field was planted in February 2015, while a new turf pitch was installed in early 2015. The sod was planted in a vertically draining, sand-based root zone that includes small amounts of peat and calcined clay to stabilize moisture content and to hold nutrient. The grass field was built using over 4,600 tons of specialty sand blend and will drain up to 12 inches of precipitation an hour.
