Saturday’s match against the Columbus Crew marks the third, and final, match of a three-game home stand for Portland. Unbeaten in an MLS-club record 21 consecutive home games dating back to April 6, 2013, the Timbers play host to Columbus for the first time since the 2012 season.

The Timbers (1-3-6, 9pts) enter Saturday’s match unbeaten at home in six consecutive matches against teams from the Eastern Con-ference, including a 3-2 win against D.C. United (May 3) and a pair of 1-1 draws against Philadel-phia (March 8) and Chicago (March 16). Portland is 3-0-3 at home against Eastern Conference clubs dating back to April 6, 2013.

Portland concludes a stretch of three con-secutive home games Saturday and, including tonight’s game, will play four of its next seven matches at Providence Park. The Timbers last lost a match at Providence Park 434 days ago and have compiled a 12-0-9 record during the team’s 21-match, home unbeaten streak, a mark that ranks fourth all-time in MLS history. Columbus currently holds third place all-time with a 22-match, home unbeaten streak during the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

The Timbers play host to Columbus following a dramatic, stoppage-time comeback against the LA Galaxy on May 11 at Providence Park. Midfielder Diego Valeri netted the latest goal ever scored in a Timbers MLS match with the equal-izer in the 95th minute of a 1-1 draw. Galaxy forward Robbie Keane scored the go-ahead goal in the 92nd minute. The match marked only the second time in MLS history in which two teams scored in stoppage time after going scoreless for 90 minutes of regulation.

Columbus (3-4-3, 12pts) enters Saturday’s game on a three-match losing streak. The Crew, who are led by first-year MLS head coach Gregg Berhalter, won each of their first three matches of the season, but have gone seven straight games without a win. Additionally, Columbus has played

Following Saturday’s match, the Timbers travel to face the New York Red Bulls on May 24 at Red Bull Arena; kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. (Pacific). The match will be broadcast live on ROOT SPORTS with a local radio broadcast on 750 The Game.

Against the CrewSaturday’s match marks the fifth all-time

regular-season meeting between Portland and Columbus since 2011 and the first match at Providence Park since 2012. The Timbers have registered a 1-2-1 record against Columbus, including an unbeaten, 1-0-1 mark at Providence Park. The clubs first met on May 21, 2011, as de-fender Eric Brunner delivered the game-winning goal off assists from Jack Jewsbury and Kalif Alhassan on a quick restart for a 1-0 Portland win, extending the team’s MLS club-record, home-winning streak to five games.

The two clubs played to a scoreless draw on May 5, 2012, at Providence Park in the last meeting between the two teams in Portland. The Timbers registered seven shots on goal in the draw.

Last season, Columbus grabbed a 1-0 win over Portland at Crew Stadium on July 7, 2013, as Crew midfielder Bernardo Anor tallied a goal in the fifth minute. Portland played 79 minutes with 10 men after defender Pa Modou Kah was issued a straight red card in the 11th minute.

How did the success of that first season with the Timbers help propel your profes-sional career?“I had returned to the United Kingdom from a South African team called Arcadia Shepherds, where I did score a lot of goals and signed for Wolverhampton Wanderers (in 1973). I asked the manager, Bill McGary, if could I go back to South Africa in the offseason to continue my development and he informed me that he didn’t want me to go back and asked me if I would be interested in going to America to help a new team that was starting in Portland. I felt that the most important thing for me was to get more games. It was a great experience (in Portland) and all the players were up for the challenge. After our first training session in Portland, the TV camera crew nearly dropped their camera when they saw me heading the ball, since I don’t think they had ever seen something like that before. It was after that when people started the calling me ‘The Mad Header’ and the ‘Wizard of Nod.’”

You’ve played in many notable games across a long career, but do you still recall fond memories of your time in Portland?“Yes, there were a lot and I remember most of the games that we had. I have good memories of the effect that we had on the people of Portland, to give them their first winning team, but also helping to promote the game in the city and going into the schools and getting the children interested in football. Another memory is remembering that first game against the Seattle Sounders. It rained all day and both teams were in the tunnel in white apparel and we had to change into our green kit and the crowd, not knowing we changed, started booing us thinking we were the away team. Also, going from 7,500 fans in the beginning to a sold-out stadium for our playoff games are great memories. That and scoring lots of goals.”

One of the biggest thrills for Timbers fans during the inaugural 1975 North American Soccer League season was watching the lynchpin of the team’s

attack, forward Peter Withe, rack up an impressive haul of 17 goals while helping lead Portland to Soccer Bowl ’75. Although the striker only spent one year in the Rose City, he fondly remembers his time with the club and actually retains a connection to the area through his grandson – a basketball player at Corban University in Salem.

What was your favorite part of living in Port-land and have you been back since that 1975 season?“I loved the lifestyle and we built a great team spirit and a winning mentality. My wife Kathy, Jason (who was my only child at the time) and I loved living there and the way of life. We had been asked to go back on a lot of occasions, but due to work commitments, we haven’t been able to return. I think I might be the only player from that 1975 team not to go back yet. I was in the U.S. for my youngest son’s wedding two years ago and was asked to come back to Portland, but due to my schedule I was again unable to get there. Kathy and I would love to come back and see the place. We still have a connection there and I think it’s kind of ironic that my grandson Aaron Withe (Jason’s son) is now playing college basketball at Corban University in Salem.”

The Timbers are entering their fourth season in Major League Soccer in 2014. Do you still keep an eye on the results in Portland and MLS in general?“Yes, I do keep a eye on the results and Aaron [Withe] has asked me if it’s possible to go to some games. I still keep in touch with some of the play-ers from the 1975 team and I’ve stayed with Chris Dangerfield in San Jose and met up with Nick [Nicolas] who also lives there [in San Jose].”

Following your playing career, you crossed over into managing teams – notably the Thailand (1998-2002) and Indonesia (2004-07) national teams. What attracted you to the man-agerial side of the game and was that always something you aspired to do?“I came late into the professional football world and I’ve loved the game for as long as I can

remember. I knew that I would be unable to play forever and wanted to pass on my knowledge to players and that’s really what inspired me to go into coaching and managing.”

How do you feel about England’s chances in Brazil?“I played against Roy [Hodgson] in South Africa and have known him for many years. He is from the old

school and works very hard with his teams. I think they do have a hard group, but as long as the players recover sufficiently after the long training sessions, I expect them to do well.”

You were part of the England National Team for the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. What were you able to take away from that experience to apply to the rest of your pro career and to your coaching?“When you are young you say to yourself, if I can get one cap it will be enough, but once you play that first game, and my first game was against Brazil, one of the teams I loved, you have this hunger and desire to improve and once you get the first one, you want two of them and then three of them and so on. To be part of the squad for the 1982 World Cup was a great honor and the only downside was not getting on the pitch – as the hunger is always there. The biggest thing in this sport is your desire and if you have this built-in mechanism to succeed then this drives you on.”

You were named head coach for Thai Premier League side PTT Rayong in December. What are your biggest challenges as you start your first season at the helm?“I have been working very hard with the team. We have a new regime, a new management team, coaching team and new players. It will be hard and we are looking to stabilize the team this season and then build for the future and set up an academy structure. Personally, I have only one goal – and that has been the goal all my life – which is to work hard at what you do and pass on your knowledge to others.”Ed. General Manager Gavin Wilkinson

Gavin Wilkinson, a long-time mem-ber of the Timbers organization and a former New Zealand international, serves as the club’s General Manager; he was appointed on January 18, 2010. He first joined the club as a player for the Timbers’ USL First Division side in 2001, before taking over as the head coach and general manager during the club’s final years in the second division from 2007-10.

The Timbers finished the 2013 MLS regular season atop the Western Con-ference and qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2011. Portland held the third-best overall record in the league, just two points shy of MLS Support-ers’ Shield-winners New York Red Bulls. The club finished among league leaders in goals scored and fewest goals allowed, while setting new club marks in points (57), goal differential (+21) and shutouts (15). In 2013, the Timbers assembled one of the longest unbeaten streaks in MLS history at 15 games and set an MLS single-season record with 11 home shutouts.

As general manager, Wilkinson has formed the Timbers’ complete, vertical development system, which includes the Portland Timbers U-23s and Timbers Academy teams (U-18 and U-16). He was instrumental in estab-lishing an innovative partnership with Oregon Youth Soccer Association, which encompasses the statewide Olympic Development Program and six regional training centers, as well as the adidas Timbers Alliance. Wilkinson also serves as the general manager for Portland Thorns FC, the 2013 National Women’s Soccer League champions.

During his tenure as the club’s general manager and head coach from 2007-10, Wilkinson assembled a 50-29-39 record over four seasons in the USL First Division/USSF Division-2 Pro League and was a two-time USL First Division Coach of the Year (2007, 2009). As head coach, Wilkinson oversaw Cascadia Cup (a fan-based derby between Portland, Seattle and Van-couver) titles in 2009, 2010 and again in 2012, and was a two-time recipient of the FieldTurf Coach of the Year for the USL First Division (2007, 2009).

He led the Timbers to one of the best seasons in USL First Division history in 2009, including a record-setting, 24-game unbeaten streak and winning the Commissioner’s Cup. The Timbers set a new single-season, league record with the impressive streak (14-0-10), surpassing the previous mark of 15 games set in 2005. The club’s record-setting run also ranks among the longest in U.S. Soccer history. Finishing in first place at 16-4-10 (58pts), Portland was awarded the Commissioner’s Cup as the league’s regular-season champion and earned a berth into the USL First Division semifinals.

On July 9, 2012, Wilkinson assumed the duties of interim head coach for the remainder of the 2012 MLS season following the dismissal of head coach John Spencer.

Wilkinson’s 13-year professional playing career included time with clubs in six different countries, includ-ing Portugal,Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. A defender, he joined the reborn Timbers for their inaugural United Soccer Leagues season in 2001, playing in each of the club’s first six seasons and serving the dual role as a player/assistant coach from 2005-06. He finished his playing career ranked among the Timbers’ USL franchise career leaders in games (124) and minutes played (10,181).

A New Zealand native, Wilkinson earned 38 caps with the New Zealand National Team and competed in the 1999 and 2003 FIFA Confederations Cups.

He and his wife, Heather, have two children, Kienan and Brooke.

Under Porter, the Timbers

the Timbers assembled a 23-point improvement in points

and an MLS-record 43-goal improvement in goal differential.

Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season are tied

for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season.

In 2013, the Timbers ranked third in MLS in goals scored

and conceded the second-fewest goals at 33, giving the

club a league-best, plus-21 goal differential. The club also

led the league with 15 shutouts, tied for third-most in a single

season in MLS history. During the regular season, the Timbers

assembled one of the longest unbeaten streaks in MLS history

at 15 games.

The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak

during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5

home record at Providence Park. The club also set an MLS

single-season record with 11 home shutouts.

Among Porter’s achievements during the 2013 season, the

club’s 57 points accrued are the most earned by a first-year

head coach in MLS since the league’s inaugural season in

1996. Porter’s winning percentage (.632) in 2013 ranked

among the best in league history for first-year MLS head

coaches, and the Timbers’ 15-game unbeaten streak is the

longest by an MLS head coach in his first full season at the

helm.

Under Porter in 2013, Portland qualified for the MLS Cup

Playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2011. By

defeating rival Seattle Sounders FC in the Western Conference

Semifinal, the Timbers became just the fifth club in MLS his-

tory to reach the conference championship in their MLS Cup

Playoff debut, and the first since Real Salt Lake in 2008.

Additionally, the Timbers made their deepest run in club his-

tory in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 under Porter’s

guidance, reaching the semifinals of the tournament.

Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter was one of the most

successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head

coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He compiled

a career mark of 123-18-17 at Akron and owned the highest

winning percentage (.832) among all active Division I coaches.

Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including

2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year.

From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter led the Zips to back-to-

back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010,

and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all,

he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC)

regular-season championships, five MAC Tournament titles

and five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round

of 16 (2008-12). Porter set multiple NCAA records while at

Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4)

from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in

conference play from 2006-12.

Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head

coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012

CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and he spent three years

as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from

2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach

for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University.

As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San

Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with

San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury end-

ed his professional playing career in 2000. Porter also played

for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze

medal at the 1997 World University Games.

He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana,

where he was a three-year captain, a three-time All-Big Ten

honoree and a four-year letter winner. Porter led the Hoosiers

to four conference titles, and four NCAA tournament appear-

ances – twice advancing to the College Cup. As a senior,

Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to

eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals

and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.

Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in

sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three

children – two sons, Colin and Jake, and a daughter, Stella.

All-Star City

The city of Portland will play host to its first-ever Major League Soccer All-Star Game on Aug. 6

at Providence Park as the MLS All-Stars will square off against 2013 UEFA Champions League winners Bayern Munich of Germany.

Featuring famed head coach Pep Guardiola and a roster replete with talented players including goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, defender Philipp Lahm, midfielders Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben and forward Thomas Müller, the 23-time German champions and five-time European champions are certain to pose a staunch test for the best players representing Major League Soccer. The league’s annual showcase event will feature several days of festivities around the Rose City, culminating in the All-Star Game.

Soccer City, USA, will be on full display for the world to watch this August and Providence Park will be the centerpiece. The 87-year-old venue has played host to a number of high-profile events including Brazilian legend Pelé’s last professional match in 1977 with the New York Cosmos, U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Team games, both semifinal matches of the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup, an Elvis Presley concert in 1957 and the first NFL game to be decided by overtime in an exhibi-tion game between the Los Angeles Rams and New York Giants in 1955.

Sean McAuley returns for a third season as an assistant coach. He joined the club midway through the 2012 season from English club Sheffield Wednesday FC. McAuley suited up for the second-division Timbers as a player during the 2002 season.

McAuley began his coaching career at Sheffield Wednesday in 2005 and spent six seasons as the club’s Academy head coach, where he oversaw the develop-ment of several youth players who went on to sign with the first team.

A native of Sheffield, England, McAuley played professionally for 15 seasons as a defender from 1990-2005. He started his career with Manchester United and played for Hartlepool United, Scunthorpe United, Rochdale and Halifax Town.

Cameron Knowles returns for a third season as an assistant coach for the Timbers. A former defender for the second-division Timbers from 2007-10, Knowles joined the coaching ranks in 2012 after a seven-year professional playing career.

Selected by Real Salt Lake in the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft, Knowles played two seasons in MLS before joining the Timbers. In Portland, Knowles was a three-time USL First Division all-league selection and played in 77 games for the club.

From Auckland, New Zealand, Knowles anchored Portland’s backline and played a key role in the Timbers’ USL First Division record-setting, 24-game unbeaten streak in 2009.

Mike Toshack enters his third season as the Timbers goalkeeper coach in 2014. He has served as a goalkeeper coach in MLS since 2007, and won MLS Cup with the Houston Dynamo in 2007.

Prior to joining Portland, Toshack was a member of the coaching staffs in Houston (2007-08) and Toronto FC (2009-11). Before working in MLS, the Prescott, Ontario, native was the director of goalkeeping for the Vancouver Whitecaps from 2005-06, helping coach the first team to the USL First Division championship in 2006. Toshack served as an assistant coach with the Montreal Impact from 2002-03.

Toshack also served as the goalkeeper coach with the Canada U-20 National Team from 1998-2001.

A Jamaica international who reached the century mark in appear-ances for the national team last year, Donovan Ricketts joined the Timbers in August 2012 following a trade with the Montreal Impact and quickly set a course toward reestablishing himself as a marquee goalkeeper in MLS. The athletic, 6-foot-4 shot-stopper impressed in his first full season in a Timbers uniform in 2013, earning the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Award for the second time in his MLS career (2010, 2013), while helping lead Portland to its first appearance in the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Hitting the Century MarkSince earning a spot on the Jamaica National Team roster as a 21-year-old in 1998 to competing in 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying last year, Ricketts registered his 100th career international appearance for Jamaica on Sept. 6, 2013, in a scoreless draw against Panama at Estadio Rommel Fernández in

Panama City. “It’s a special feeling because not everybody gets to

represent their country and to represent your country

category. It’s an honor.”

Developing AbroadBefore he first signed with MLS and the LA Galaxy in 2009, Ricketts spent several seasons in England playing for Bradford City in the northern part of the country. The environment was completely different from what he had experienced in Jamaica and it was one that helped set him on a good path as a pro-fessional. “It helped a lot. Coming from Jamaica, we’re laid back and it’s like semi-professional or even amateur so-to-speak. Going into a professional environment, it was different because they emphasize being on time and every training session is like a game. So in Jamaica you can go through practice as just practice, but there it’s like an audition for the real thing. It taught me that everything begins with practice, everything begins with being on time and discipline.”

Ricketts Fact:The goalkeeper comes from a huge family,

counting 13 brothers and seven sisters, many of whom are also athletes in their own right. Two of his older brothers, Daniel and Devon Ricketts, also made appearances for the Jamaica National Team. His father played soccer at the club level as a teenager, but Donovan is the only goalkeeper of the bunch.

Soaking up the FIFA World CupBefore even earning his first international cap, Ricketts was named to Jamaica’s roster for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. The third-string goalkeeper on the roster, Ricketts went into the tourna-ment knowing there was a very small like-lihood of playing in a match, but that didn’t lessen the experience one bit. “It was a good feeling because there was no pressure on me. I knew I wasn’t going to play so I was just soaking in the atmosphere. To be in a World Cup, when you’re young, you see it on TV and then you get to be there, be a part of it. It’s a really, really special feeling.”

Calm Before the StormIf you watch Ricketts when he takes to his goal box right before kickoff, you’ll notice the same routine each time, involving his back turned to the field and his arms outstretched. “I’m praying. You ask the Lord to take you through the game, guide you from injuries, but you never ask to

win because that’s left up to fate and destiny. So I just ask for protection and

guidance. First, I started kneeling, but then I did it with my arms outstretched

and I just kept that going.”

A FRIENDLY FACE ROLAND ILG

A fixture at Providence Park for over 30 years, guest services attendant Roland Ilg

retired at the end of last season with a special party in the KeyBank Club for staff and friends.

Generations of fans from various teams – Timbers, Thorns FC, Portland State Vikings, Portland Beavers, Portland Rockies and more – may remember his smiling face at the southeastern corner of the stadium. Usually stationed at the old “Gate 35”, now known as Gate 1 near the Providence Sports Care Center, Ilg could be found greeting fans along with one of his trusty dogs.

But when Ilg began at the then called Civic Stadium in 1980, there was no sports care center. In fact, there wasn’t much of any cover at all until Ilg commandeered a portable shed from the Portland Expo Center that became

the little green Gate 35 hut. Prior to that,

Ilg would stand at his post in every kind of weather imaginable.

“I used to stand out at Gate 35 with a yellow rain coat,” he said. “I did that for I don’t know how many years.”

Ever resourceful, Ilg looked to improve his predicament. He had been working for a couri-er company that ran a loop route between the Expo Center, the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall and the stadium. Seeing new parking attendant sheds being installed at the Expo Center, Ilg managed to save one of the old ones prior to it being taken to the dump. He then brought it back to the stadium but, he said, “I got kind of in trouble over that. I finally had to go to the general manager and talk to him.”

Ilg’s commitment persevered as the hut has been there ever since, helping protect staffers from the elements.

A veteran of both the Swiss and U.S. Army, Ilg was also a noted baker who never had need for the oven temperature control settings. An instructor at a culinary institute, he would sim-ply open an oven, wave his arm to gauge the heat and he could just tell if it had the right feel.

A dog lover, Ilg could often be seen with one of his trusty companions around the

park. Dusty helped greet fans until her passing in 2011 and now Bebe has

been a constant partner. He even managed to grab an extra Timbers guest services jacket and cut it to size for her to wear.

While Ilg worked hundreds of games and events – Billy Graham’s visit in 1992 was probably the biggest crowd he can remember. He says his favorite part about working at Providence Park was getting to meet the fans.

“I’m kind of a people person,” he said. “It’s nice to be around all

the people. I got to know so many people and I still sometimes go to

the grocery store and people come up to me and say, ‘You know, you

used to take my tickets!’”Still a fan himself, Ilg knows that after an

incredible run of guest service excellence, he’s leaving the organization on a high note

given that the Thorns won the 2013 National Women’s Soccer League championship and the Timbers had a record-setting season.

“I said to myself, it’s kind of nice to get out of the deal on a winning streak.”

Fast approaching the century mark in career MLS appearances as a member of the Portland Timbers, the tough-as-nails midfielder Diego Chara has been a key component in the center of the park for the Timbers and has become a fan favorite since signing as the team’s first-ever Designated Player in April 2011. When he was first starting his professional career, he shared the field with an aging star at Deportes Quindío – Leonel Álvarez.

The last stop in a 21-year professional career for defensive midfielder Leonel Álvarez, he joined Chara on the pitch during the 2004 season with Deportes Quindío in Colombia. Earning more than 100 caps for the Colombi-an National Team from 1985 to 1995, Álvarez appeared for the national side in both the 1990 and 1994 FIFA World Cup tournaments. Following a Colombian league title in 1995 with América de Cali, Álvarez signed for the inaugu-ral MLS season with the Dallas Burn (now FC Dallas) where he was coached by Dave Dir.

Dave Dir, the first coach in Dallas’ MLS history, commanded the squad from 1996 until 2000, winning the 1997 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, which still stands as the club’s lone piece of silverware. The longest serving of the league’s 10 original head coaches, Dir currently ranks 10th all-time in career wins (81) in MLS history. Before he made his MLS coaching debut, the Alaska native was the head coach of the Colo-rado Foxes of the American Professional Soccer League (APSL) from 1992-94, where he counted one Scott Benedetti among his players.

A Portland native, Scott Benedetti played soc-cer at the University of Portland under legendary head coach Clive Charles from 1985-89. While in college, Benedetti played for F.C. Portland of the Western Soccer Alliance and made various stops in his professional career before being selected No. 72 overall in the inaugural MLS Player Draft in 1996 by the Colorado Rapids. He played two seasons for the Rapids before even-tually landing back in Portland as a member of the resurgent Timbers for the 2001 USL season. Benedetti made nearly 100 appearances for the Timbers from 2001-05.

Valeri doesn’t place one style of food in particular above another, but did note the similarities between some of his favorite types. “Argentinean food is similar to Italian food. It’s a mix you know, between Italian, Spanish and American food – pasta and some meats, steaks.”

Playmaking midfielder Diego Valeri first came to Portland a little more than a year ago, setting individual single-season MLS-club re-cords for goals (10) and assists (13) in 2013 while earning MLS Best XI honors and the league’s Newcomer of the Year award. Now that he and his family have settled into life

in the Rose City, he explained what he likes most about living in Portland and some of his favorite spots around town.

Out and AboutWorking around the busy soccer schedule, Valeri and his family have been able to head out to the Oregon Coast, but have yet to travel the opposite direction into the mountains. “With my family we went to the beach last year. I haven’t gone to the mountains, but I want to go to Mt. Hood. We like the city. We live in the city center, so we love that. We stay there. We want to travel a little bit more, but we like the city so we always stay in the city.”

Family TimeIt’s always important to spend quality time with the family, so Valeri likes to get outside with his wife and daughter, especially to one of the many parks around the city. “We have two or three parks, like Wallace Park in Northwest and, a few blocks from my house, we have another park. We go there. [My daughter] likes to play, sometimes with the ball, but she likes the playgrounds, the slides, the monkey bars, those kinds of things.”

A World of DifferenceValeri’s hometown of Buenos Aires in Argentina

is one of the biggest cities in the world, which makes the midfielder appreciate the size and pace of the Rose City. “[There is] a big difference

[between the cities], a big difference in the traffic. Buenos Aires has a lot of people [close] together.

Portland is beautiful with a lot of green spaces, fields, parks, and the river. In Buenos Aires, you have

few places with that. A lot of buildings and a lot of people, that’s the big difference. Sometimes in the city,

in Portland, you can hear the silence and that’s great.”

Portland’s first-ever MLS SuperDraft pick, midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 MLS Super-Draft. Since then, the 23-year-old has quickly become the club’s all-time MLS career leader in appearances, eclipsing the century mark in games played earlier this season, while also leading the MLS-club record book in goals scored. The BasicsIn a nutshell, CONCACAF Champions League – which was previously called CON-CACAF Champions’ Cup until 2008 – is an annual, 24-team tournament featuring the top teams in the North America (9 teams), Central America (12 teams) and Caribbean zones (3 teams).

• The qualified teams are drawn into eight, three-team groups for the opening group stage. Clubs from the United States cannot be drawn into the same group as a team from Mexico for the group stage.

• Each team will play one home and one away match against the other two teams in its group for a total of four group-stage matches from August-October.

• The eight group winners will qualify for the knockout stage. Qualified teams are then seeded 1-8 according to group-stage results and the bracket is deter-mined as No. 1 vs. No. 8, No. 2 vs. No. 7, No. 3 vs. No. 6 and No. 4 vs. No. 5.

• The knockout round consists home and away legs with the away goals rule used as a tiebreaker if the aggregate score is level after regulation in the second leg.

• The quarterfinals, semifinals and final are all played with the same format – two legs, away goals as the tiebreaker.

The IncentiveAn MLS club has not won the competition since the LA Galaxy lifted the trophy in 2000 with a 3-2 win over C.D. Olimpia from Honduras. Since the tournament shifted to its current format in 2008, Real Salt Lake is the only MLS team to reach the final, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Mexico’s CF Monterrey in the 2010-11 edition. Becoming the first MLS club to win CONCACAF Champions League in its current form stands to be a tremendous honor, but that is not the only incentive motivating clubs to do well in the tournament. The tournament’s champion qualifies for the FIFA Club World Cup, which features the champions of all six continental con-federation tournaments, as well as the domestic champion of the host country.Bayern Munich, who will pay a visit to the Rose City for the 2014 MLS All-Star Game, won the most recent FIFA Club World Cup in December 2013,

defeating host club and surprising championship-game participant, Raja Casablanca of Morocco, 2-0, in the final.

HistorySince 1962, a club from Mexico has hoisted the trophy an astounding

29 times, with Cruz Azul and Club America leading the way as each has five titles. The Champions League era has been dominated by Mexican clubs with CF Monterrey winning three consecutive times from 2011-13.

The largest and most prestigious international club tournament in North America, Central America and the Caribbean, CONCACAF Champions League will make its debut in Portland this season as the Timbers captured their first-ever berth in the tournament by virtue of finishing first in the Western Conference regular-season standings last season. The 24-team competition will celebrate its 50th anniversary for the 2014-15 edition. T he defending National Women’s Soccer League-champion Portland Thorns FC kick off their second season in the Rose City in 2014. Thorns FC features some of the top women’s soccer

players in the world, including standout forwards Alex Morgan and Christine Sinclair – both of whom contributed eight goals during the regular season in 2013.

Portland added many key parts to its roster during the offseason, strengthening the squad for a run at a second consecutive title in 2014. adidas TIMBERSALLIANCEThe adidas Timbers Alliance is a strategic partnership between the club and elite local youth clubs throughout the Timbers’ development territory, designed to build unique working relationships and devel-opment opportunities to help channel the top youth players toward Timbers development programs and academy. The adidas Timbers Alliance includes seven clubs – the Bend FC Timbers (Bend), Capital

TIMBERS REGIONAL TRAINING CENTERSOne of the major com-ponents of the Timbers development structure and Oregon ODP are the six Regional Training Centers, located in the cities of Beaverton, Bend, Eugene/Salem, Gresham, Medford and Vancouver, Wash. Each Regional Training Center is designed to identify and further develop elite boy players in the U-12 to U-14 age groups in its designated area. From these training centers, a pool of players is chosen to form state ODP and Timbers Pre-Academy teams at various age levels for regional and national competitions.

PORTLAND TIMBERS ACADEMYThe Timbers Academy consists of teams in the U-18 and U-16 age brackets of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. The Timbers Academy teams com-pete in the Northwest Division against other elite youth teams in the region, including acad-emy teams from MLS clubs Chivas USA, LA Galaxy, San Jose Earth-quakes, Seattle Sound-ers FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The Timbers U-16 Academy also participates in the annual MLS Generation adidas Cup.

PORTLAND TIMBERS U-23sThe pinnacle of the Timbers development system is the Portland Timbers U-23s, which competes in United Soccer Leagues’ Premier Development League (PDL) – the top U-23 league in North America. Founded Nov. 11, 2008, the Timbers U-23s is an amateur team that has produced several first-team players, including midfielder Steven Evans, defender Bryan Gallego and goalkeeper Jake Gleeson. The team won the PDL championship in 2010 and competed in the 2012 and 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S.Open Cup.

Rooted in the club’s deep history, the Timbers have a passion for developing youth players and the sport of soccer in the region. The Timbers Academy provides elite youth players from Oregon and South-west Washington advanced training and competitive opportunities against the best youth players across North America.

Timbers Youth Leagues, Tournaments and CampsThe Timbers and OYSA have formed an innovative partnership, which sees the statewide, youth soccer organization become a part of the Timbers’ comprehensive youth development structure. Special Olympics OregonThe Timbers, adidas and Special Olympics Oregon have worked together since 2012 to support the Cascadia Challenge Unified Soc-cer exchange with Special Olympics Washington. New in 2014, the Timbers, Thorns FC and Providence Health & Services partner with Special Olympics Oregon to bring back the Special Olympics Oregon Fall Games, which had been dormant since 2008, and Prov-idence Park will be a home site for the event. The Fall Games will provide more than 600 athletes, 200 coaches and an additional 200 volunteers from across the state of Oregon the opportunity to compete and participate in a variety of events, including soccer. The 2,000 trees the Timbers have planted with pillar partner Friends of Trees absorb carbon dioxide (96,000 lbs./year), remove pollutants from the air (about 360,000 lbs./year), and intercept storm water (4,760,000 gallons of rainwater/year) to keep our rivers clean. Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest The mentoring program con-tinues its partnership with the club through the “Sports Bud-dies” program, which is a one-to-one mentoring program for at-risk youth with an emphasis on sports. Girls, Inc.A Thorns FC community part-ner during the team’s inaugural 2013 season, Girls, Inc., of NW Oregon, is a targeted, gender-specific program working to improve the lives of girls ages 6-18 years old with programs meant to encourage girls to be strong, smart and bold. Continuing to build on last year’s initiatives, the club will partner with Girls, Inc., of NW Oregon, for their annual Power of the Purse, Mind + Body Fair and International Day of the Girl events in addi-tion to the Girls of the Game program and Rose Ceremony

at Thorns FC home games.

Northwest OutwardBound SchoolThe Timbers and Thorns FC will work together with Northwest Outward Bound School to support their mission and raise awareness for their important work in the community. North-west Outward Bound School aims to change lives through challenge and discovery. In 2011, they established the Outward Bound Portland Center in east Multnomah County to bring their mission closer to low income and urban youth.

PlayworksThe club partners with Playworks in support of the organization’s annual Soccer Jamboree. Playworks strives to create a place for every kid on the playground, where every kid belongs, has fun and is part of the game. By having Playworks at their schools, teachers and administrators have reported lasting results as 93 percent reported a decrease in the number of disruptive events in the classroom. A further 86 percent reported a decrease in the number of bullying incidents; 94 percent reported an increase in students’ abilities to focus in class after recess; 98 percent reported an improvement in overall school climate.

Portland YouthBuildersThe Timbers and Portland YouthBuilders work together on the Timbers annual Corporate Cup, in addition to holiday giving with adidas. Portland YouthBuilders (PYB) serves 200 young people each year through a combination of academics, vocational training, leadership development, and long term support. PYB is a fully accred-

ited, diploma-granting high school and a BOLI-certified pre-apprenticeship training center. PYB students, who are all between the ages of 17-24, face multiple barriers to success including pover-ty, abuse or violence in the home, gang involvement, drug addiction, involvement with the criminal justice system, and/or homelessness. Despite these barriers, in 2013, 82 percent of PYB students were placed in a job, college, or apprenticeship after leaving PYB.

Schoolhouse SuppliesWorking with the club for nine years, Schoolhouse Supplies is an award-winning nonprofit that supports public education in Portland by giving students and teachers free classroom supplies. The Timbers have worked with Schoolhouse Supplies to provide backpacks full of school supplies to every student at Jason Lee Elemen-tary school in east Portland. To date, Schoolhouse Supplies has distributed more than $20 million worth of school supplies in Oregon, including nearly 450,000 books and more than 3.4 million pencils. In addition, they’ve had more than 46,000 teachers shop in their Free Store for Teachers.

adidas Timbers Training Center

On April 19, 2012, the Portland Timbers un-

veiled the new adidas Timbers Training Center, a

state-of-the-art facility, built as part of a 10-year

partnership with Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation

District. The $6 million training center features

a natural-grass field and is the primary on-field

training ground of the Major League Soccer

club.

Some of the features of the adidas Timbers

Training Center include a 7,000-square-foot

indoor facility, with locker rooms for the Timbers

first team and development teams, fully-

equipped training and recently expanded fitness

areas, offices and a spacious lounge/common

area for Timbers players.

The grass field, widely regarded as one of

the best fields in the state, is a combination of

75 percent perennial ryegrass and 25 percent

Kentucky bluegrass that is perfectly suited for

cooler climates and provides uniform cover, and

greater stability, footing and durability.

The adidas Timbers Training Center is located

in Beaverton, approximately 10 minutes from

Providence Park. It also serves as the training

home for the Timbers’ development teams, spe-

cifically the Timbers U-23s as well as the club’s

U-18 and U-16 Academy teams.

As part of the public/private partnership

with THPRD, the Timbers will make an annual

donation to the Tualatin Hills Park Foundation

and will conduct a series of annual youth soc-

cer camps and coaches’ clinics at the adidas

Timbers Training Center. The training center

includes a synthetic, FieldTurf field designated

for public use.

The grass field was planted in mid-January 2012 from one-year-old sod.

The sod was planted in a vertically draining, sand-based root zone that includes small amounts of peat and calcined clay to stabilize moisture content and to hold nutrients.

The grass field was built using over 4,600 tons of specialty sand blend (383 truckloads) and will drain up to 12 inches of precipitation an hour.

The overall project took 5,240 man hours to complete.
