The Rapids have never lost at home to Portland. They had won the first three home matchups all-time with the Timbers, before the teams played to a 2-2 draw last April 30 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
The Rapids haven’t scored a goal in Portland on their last three visits, since a 1-0 win in 2011 in their first-ever game in the Rose City. The Timbers have won the last three home games in the series.
Coaches record: Caleb Porter vs. COL: P3 W2 L0 D1 … Pablo Mastroeni vs. POR: first game COLORADO RAPIDS The Colorado Rapids opened the new season with a road point in Pablo Mastroeni’s head coaching debut, coming back for a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls on Saturday afternoon at Red Bull Arena. The Rapids are in a tie for seventh place in the Western Conference with 1 point from 1 game. LAST MATCH
The Red Bulls went in front in the 57th minute. Lloyd Sam sent in a cross from the right that found an unmarked Thierry Henry floating to the back post, and he finished with a diving header that beat rookie goalkeeper John Berner from close range.
But the Rapids found the equalizer a quarter-hour later. Marvin Chavez was adjudged to have been fouled from behind by New York defender Jamison Olave and referee Alan Kelly pointed to the spot. Substitute Vicente Sanchez buried the resulting penalty to leave the teams level.
Rapids head coach Pablo Mastroeni gave rookie John Berner the start between the posts, while newcomer José Mari was in the team in the midfield.

the bench for the final 13 minutes, was given his first professional start on the right of midfield. “We have a lot of young guys out on the field. I think for a guy like Dillon Serna, in his debut as a starter in
Major League Soccer and a lot of second year players out there … and I think coming in to Red Bull Arena against some of the players that they have and what they accomplished last year it’s something to be in awe of,” Mastroeni said. “I think once they settled in they put in a decent performance.”
MLS GAME INFORMATION
As had been throughout preseason, Shane O’Neill started at right back with Marvell Wynne returning to central defense.
There was an injury-forced change as Chris Klute had to come off before the hour mark. Klute is not expected to be available for the next couple of weeks.
“So it’s the next man up and ready to rock and to prepare for the next game without him. Klute’s one of those guys who won’t come off the field unless he’s absolutely not able to go. I’m assuming it’s a strain,” said Mastroeni.
Marc Burch made his Rapids debut, coming in at left back in place of Klute. Burch was picked up in the Re-Entry Draft from Seattle Sounders FC in the offseason.
“Every guy that’s here, whether you’re a rookie or an experienced player, is expected to go out there and do the same job, if not better than, the guy you’re replacing,” Mastroeni said. “I think Marc Burch exemplifies that in going out there on the field and not missing a beat and making a big play down there in the stretch. Those are the expectations I have for everyone, whether you’re starting the game or coming in.”
The goal came through a pair of substitutes, with Marvin Chávez winning the penalty that was converted by Vicente Sánchez.
“From an energy standpoint, young guys for the good part of three-quarters of the game, they brought a lot of good energy,” Mastroeni said. “I thought Marvin [Chávez], [Marc] Burch and Vicente did a great job, coming in and changing the game in their own unique ways.”
PORTLAND TIMBERS The Portland Timbers recorded their second late draw in as many matches to begin the 2014 season, coming back for a 1-1 result with the Chicago Fire on Sunday afternoon at Providence Park. The Timbers are in sixth place in the Western Conference with 2 points from 2 games. LAST MATCH
The Fire took the lead in the 19th minute. Quincy Amarikwa chased down a long ball in the box and Timbers center back Norberto Paparatto took him down near the end line. After referee Marcos de Oliveira pointed to the spot, Jeff Larentowicz calmly fired home as Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts guessed wrong.
The Fire were reduced to 10 men when Patrick Nyarko was sent off in the 86th minute after a second caution for a reckless challenge on Darlington Nagbe.
But the Timbers again hit for a late equalizer at home. Nagbe's rocket from the top of the area was saved by Fire goalkeeeper Sean Johnson, but the rebound fell right to Gaston Fernandez for the easy tap-in in the 79th minute and his second goal in as many games.
Timbers head coach Caleb Porter made one change to the team that got a late equalizer for a 1-1 draw with Philadelphia Union at Providence Park. Mamadou Danso started at center back in place of Pa Modou Kah.

TEAM NEWS It was a second consecutive home draw to start the season for the Timbers, who recorded an MLS-high 15
draws in 2013 on their way to winning the Western Conference regular season title. “It reminds me a little bit of last year, and we’re even ahead of last year; we lost [the second] game last year,”
Timbers head coach Caleb Porter said. “It took us a while to get going, and we had slow starts to games, at times, last year. … The positives are we’ve come from behind to get a point in both games. Also, in the second half, we’ve played very well both games. Both games, we dominated the game in terms of possession. We had more shots in both games. We’ve come from behind both games. That’s another positive trend.”
Gastón Fernández scored his second goal in as many MLS games, again potting a late equalizer to salvage a point for the Timbers.
“Gaston Fernandez is a quality player, and a lot of people are forgetting that he’s just been in this country for a couple months. It takes guys time to settle in and get comfortable in this league, and I thought for large periods of this game, he took the game over and was one of the better players on the field,” said Porter. “He deserved to score the goal. He’s one of these guys who gets himself into good spots. He’s not the biggest, but he’s smart. He gets himself around the goal, and with goal scorers, the ball seems to find them, and that’s twice now where the ball has found him in good spots for two tap-in goals.”
After conceding a goal from a corner kick in the season opener, the Timbers’ lone goal against vs. Chicago came from the penalty spot.
“We didn’t give up a goal on a corner or a wide free kick so I feel good about that,” said Porter. :”They had a lot of balls in the box between corners and free kicks, and we didn’t give up a goal on those. It is a positive to see an improvement in that regard.”
Mamadou Danso slotted into central defense with Pa Modou Kah out after suffering a hamstring strain in the season opener.

“I think the natural thing is to always credit the backs and the goalkeeper for that and they’re a big part for sure, but I think it’s also the defending as a team, the collective defending is the biggest reason why we don’t give up many goals, and the other reason is because we’re on the ball a lot,” said Porter. “I think this game we had 64 percent possession, so that’s 64 percent of the time you’re not defending. These are all reasons why I believe in the philosophy that we play.”

The Home Opener The Colorado Rapids kick off their 2014 home campaign this Saturday, after opening the regular season with a 1-1 draw at the New York Red Bulls on March 15. In their last 18 seasons, the Rapids hold an 11-3-4 record in their first home game of the sea-son. This is the second time that the Rapids will start their home season against the Timbers, having defeated Portland 3-1 in their inaugural match on March 19, 2011. History against Portland Against the Portland Timbers, the Rapids lead the all-time record 4-3-1 (W-L-T), and have never fallen to the Pacific Northwest side at home. In 2013, the Rapids earned a 2-2 draw on March 30 in Colorado, and were later shut out twice in Oregon for two losses and a draw on the season series. In their four wins against the Timbers, the Rapids have won by two goals or more. 2014 Timbers With two games under their belt, the Timbers come to Colorado with two points, having tied the Philadelphia Union (3/8) and the Chicago Fire (3/16) 1-1 to start their season. Forward Gastón Fernández, an Argentine with experience in his home country and Mexico, scored both of Portland’s goals and will be a threat for the Rapids defense to manage on Saturday. The squad is led by Caleb Porter, the former University of Akron coach who led the Zips to five MAC Tournament titles. Rapids 1, New York Red Bulls 1 On March 15, the Rapids kicked off the 2014 schedule with at Red Bull Arena, earning a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls and their first point of the season. After struggling to win posses-sion in the first 10 minutes, the Rapids controlled the flow of the game for the remaining 80. An unmarked Thierry Henry put the home side ahead with a header goal in the 57th minute. Uruguay-an forward Vicente Sánchez later evened the score, burying a penalty kick that was awarded for a foul on Marvin Chávez in the 72nd minute to send the visitors home with a point. Portland Connections Rapids forward Danny Mwanga spent the 2012 season with the Timbers, playing in 18 matches and scoring 3 goals before being traded to the Rapids in February 2013. Homegrown Player Dillon Serna will be facing his former coach this Saturday, Caleb Porter, who was at the helm of the Universi-ty of Akron for Serna’s only collegiate year in 2012. Merch of the Match At each home game, the Colorado Rapids have teamed up with Altitude Authentics to offer a special price on one item, called the Merch of the Match. For March 22, the item will be the brand new burgundy and onyx “Colorado For Life” scarf, offered for just $20
(regularly $25) at the Rapids Team Store and any Altitude Au-thentics kiosk at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Mastroeni at the helm After a 16 year MLS playing career, Rapids legend Pablo Mastroeni has begun a new chapter, coaching his first Major League Soccer game for the Colorado Rapids and earning his first point on March 15 with the 1-1 draw in New York. Mastroeni was named the club’s Head Coach on March 8 and presented to fans at the Celtic Tavern in downtown Denver. He had led the team through preseason to a 4-2-2 record as the Special Assis-tant to the Technical Director before assuming the new title. Serna’s first start Rapids Homegrown Player Dillon Serna made his first MLS start, and went on to play the full 90 minutes on March 15 against the New York Red Bulls. Last season, Serna made his MLS debut in Colorado’s final regular season game at Vancouver as a 77th minute sub, and the 19-year-old has since impressed during pre-season and training. Serna was signed as the club’s third ever Homegrown Player on January 14, 2013, and is the second ever (with Shane O’Neill) to start a game for the Rapids. José Mari debuts Offseason acquisition José Mari made his MLS debut on March 15, playing the full 90 minutes and recording two shots against the New York Red Bulls. The Spanish midfielder was signed by the club on March 4, having played his entire professional career in Spain and most recently with Real Zaragoza of La Liga. Klute out Defender Chris Klute was subbed out in the 52nd minute of the match against New York after suffering a hamstring injury. An examination afterwards revealed that Klute will likely be out for “a couple weeks,” according to Pablo Mastroeni, while rehabilitating the right hamstring strain. Powers okay Last year’s Rookie of the Year Dillon Powers received three sta-ples in his head after suffering a head laceration during Satur-day’s game in New York. He reported to media at training on Tuesday that he did not feel any concussion symptoms and would continue preparing regularly for this weekend’s match. Berner debuts While Clint Irwin was out with a minor quad strain, 23-year-old John Berner made his MLS debut starting in goal for the Rapids against New York on March 15. Berner was the team’s fourth selection of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft with the 35th overall pick in the second round. Providence Park opened on April 14, 2011, in front of a sold-out crowd in the Timbers first-ever home match as an MLS team. The club proceeded to sell out 51 consecutive regular season home games in the team’s first three MLS sea-sons, even after raising the 86-year-old downtown venue’s capacity from 18,627 to 20,647 in 2013. Last year, the club earned an 11-1-5 overall regular-season home record in 17 games, which was the best home record in MLS.

Forward Gastón Fernández scored his second goal in as many games and the Timbers used a commanding second-half performance to earn a 1-1 draw against the Chicago Fire in front of a sellout crowd of 20,814 at Providence Park on March 16. Fernández tallied the game-tying goal for a second consecu-tive week and becomes the first MLS Timbers player to open a season with a goal in the team’s first two matches. Finding space in front of the goal in the 79th minute, Fernández pounced on a rebound created by a shot from midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe, to level the score at 1-1 with 11 minutes remaining in regulation. Commanding possession during the second half of the game, Portland finished with 21 total shots, including 11 in the final 45 minutes.
CONSECUTIVE REGULAR-SEASON HOME SELLOUTS:
CATEGORICAL WON-LOST-TIED HEAD COACH CALEB PORTERHead coach Caleb Porter guided the Portland Timbers on a record-setting, turna-round season in 2013, his first season in MLS and as the club’s head coach. He was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the award since it was founded in 1957.
Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after leading Portland to a 14-5-15 (57pts) record, finishing the regular season in first place in the Western Conference and with the third-best record in the league – just two points shy of MLS Supporters’ Shield-winners New York Red Bulls. In 2013, the Timbers set new single-season club marks in points, wins, goals (54), goal differential (+21), shutouts (15) and fewest goals allowed (33).
Under Porter, the Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS history in 2013. In comparison to Portland’s 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improvement in points and an MLS-record 43-goal improvement in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season are tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season. In 2013, the Timbers ranked third in MLS in goals scored and conceded the second-fewest goals at 33, giving the club a league-best, plus-21 goal differential. The club also led the league with 15 shutouts, tied for third-most in a single season in MLS history. During the regular season, the Timbers assembled one of the longest unbeaten streaks in MLS history at 15 games.
The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park. The club also set an MLS single-season record with 11 home shutouts. Among Porter’s achievements during the 2013 season, the club’s 57 points accrued are the most earned by a first-year head coach in MLS since the league’s inaugural season in 1996. Porter’s winning percentage (.632) in 2013 ranked among the best in league history for first-year MLS head coaches, and the Timbers’ 15-game unbeaten streak is the longest by an MLS head coach in his first full season at the helm.
Under Porter in 2013, Portland qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2011. By defeating rival Seattle Sounders FC in the Western Conference Semifinal, the Tim-bers became just the fifth club in MLS history to reach the conference championship in their MLS Cup Playoff debut, and the first since Real Salt Lake in 2008. Additionally, the Timbers made their deepest run in club history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 under Porter’s guidance, reaching the semi-finals of the tournament.
Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 at Akron and owned the highest winning percentage (.832) among all active Division I coaches. Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year.
From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season championships, five MAC tournament titles and five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12). Porter set multiple NCAA records while at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12.
Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and he spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University.
As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games.
He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain and a three-time All-Big Ten honoree. Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles, and four NCAA tourna-ment appearances. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.

The Timbers and Rapids squared off in Portland’s first-ever MLS match back on March 19, 2011, as Colorado took a 3-1 win over the Timbers at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Over the last five meetings, however, the Timbers have gained a foothold against Colorado with a 3-1-1 record, including an undefeated 2-0-1 mark during the 2013 regular season.
In the first meeting of the 2013 season, the Timbers overcame a two-goal deficit on the road as midfielder Will Johnson recorded a brace in the second half of a 2-2 draw. Johnson was named the NASR MLS Player of the Week for his efforts against the Rapids. Nearly three months later, midfielder Rodney Wallace registered a Timbers’ MLS-club, single-game record three assists in a 3-0 win on June 23, 2013.
In the final match between the two sides during the 2013 season, midfielder Diego Valeri connected with a pass from Wallace and the Timbers defense limited Colorado to just one shot on goal in a 1-0 shutout at Providence Park on Sept. 20, 2013.

REGULAR-SEASON UNBEATEN STREAK
Dating back to the 2013 MLS season, the Timbers are unbeaten in 10 straight regular-season games, including three straight matches on the road. Starting with a 4-0 win against Toronto FC on Sept. 7, 2013, the Timbers have earned a 5-0-5 overall record. Portland ended the 2013 regular-season on an eight-game unbeaten run and opened the 2014 campaign with back-to-back draws at home. Portland has earned a 1-0-2 record on the road during the unbeaten run.
UPCOMING MILESTONESDefender Jack Jewsbury is 30 minutes shy of becoming the first Timbers MLS player to log 8,000 minutes played for the club.
Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts is four clean sheets away from reaching 50 shutouts in his MLS career. Ricketts, the 2013 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, registered an MLS career-best 14 shutouts last season. Ricketts is currently two clean sheets shy of tying Scott Garlick for ninth place on the list of all-time MLS leaders in shutouts.
If forward Gastón Fernández records a goal against the Rapids, he will tie the MLS club record for longest individual scoring streak with a goal in three con-secutive league games. Midfielder Diego Valeri matched the record with a goal in three straight games from Sept. 7-20, 2013. Midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe set the initial record with a goal in three straight games from Aug. 15-25, 2012.
Entering Saturday’s match, defender Michael Harrington has played 1,620 consecutive regular-season minutes for the Timbers. If Harrington is able to play a full 90 minutes over the next two matches, he will tie the team’s MLS record for longest streak of consecutive minutes played (1,800), set by defender Jack Jewsbury from March 19-July 30, 2011.
JOHNSON SIGNED TO MULTI-YEAR CONTRACT
The Timbers recently signed midfielder Will Johnson to a new, multi-year contract. Johnson, 27, was named to the league’s Best XI after helping guide the Timbers to a first-place finish in the Western Conference regular-season stand-ings and their first-ever appearance in the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2013. Voted a 2013 AT&T MLS All-Star, Johnson also helped lead the Timbers to their deepest run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The team’s captain set new career marks in goals (9), assists (5), points (23) and minutes played (2,520) during his first season with Portland last season.
DENYING GOALS IN THE RUN OF PLAY
The Timbers have not allowed a goal during the run of play in a regular-season game since Vancouver’s Camilo scored what was eventually voted the 2013 MLS Goal of the Year, on Oct. 6, 2013, in a 2-2 draw at BC Place in Vancouver. Overlapping the end of the 2013 regular season and the start of the 2014 cam-paign, Portland has not allowed a goal from the run of play in 462 consecutive minutes during the regular season.
CREATING CHANCESThrough two games this season, the Timbers are leading the league in total shots with 36, including 21 in a 1-1 draw against the Chicago Fire on March 16. According to Opta, the Timbers rank second in overall chances created (25), just behind Houston (30). At the individual level, midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe is tied for fourth in MLS with seven chances created.
THE IRONMANTimbers midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe has started 50 straight league games for the club dating back to the 2012 MLS season. Entering his fourth year with the team, Nagbe has appeared in 69 of the team’s 70 regular-season games since the start of the 2012 MLS season. Nagbe is the club’s MLS career leader in goals (17) and appearances (97).
The Rapids hired former midfielder Pablo Mastroeni as the club’s eighth head coach on March 8, one week prior to their season-opening match against New York. Mastroeni unveiled a young starting lineup against the Red Bulls in his first game at the helm, as the average age of Colorado’s starting XI was a spry 24.4 years old, including five players 23-years-old or younger. Against the Red Bulls, last year’s MLS Supporters’ Shield winners, the Rapids attempted 18 shots while also holding New York to just two shots on goal (one of which ended in a goal for forward Thierry Henry). Rookie goalkeeper John Berner made his first career MLS appearance, while former Real Zaragoza midfielder José Mari made his MLS debut and 19-year-old Homegrown midfielder Dillon Serna attempted four shots (2 on goal) against the Red Bulls.
