Battleship“Oh no! You sunk my Battleship!” In this Greek Week Event, chapters will create a team of four and compete against each other in the Physical Activities Center. The objective is to toss buckets of water at each other to try and fill up the other team’s canoe. The first canoe to sink will lose and the winner will advance to the next round.

Greek Week

As students, faculty and visitors of USI’s campus walk by the Uni-versity Center this week, they will notice an array of banners hanging outside of the building. Each chapter had the opportu-nity to enter a banner promoting the upcoming Greek Week events to be judged for competition.

“You can’t understand a person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.” Inspired by this saying, men will literally walk one mile in women’s high heeled shoes to protest rape, sexual assault and gender violence. Walk a Mile is presented by Albion Fellows Bacon Center and USI’s Sexual Assault and Gender Violence Prevention Group. Men, women and chil-dren alike are welcome to participate in the walk, which will begin in Mitchell Auditorium and contin-ue throughout USI’s campus. Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding, Vanderburgh County Pros-ecutor Nick Hermann, Evansville Police Department Chief Billy Bolin, among others will participate in the event.

Similar to the popular app played on mobile devices, each chapter will test its wits in six different catego-ries: science, sports, entertainment, art, history and geography. Each chapter will create teams of three to compete in each category. A “phone a friend” contes-

tant for each chapter will be in the crowd, who can only be used one time per category. Teams will have fifteen seconds to respond to each question and will receive

one point for each correct answer. The chapter with the most amount of points will be the winner.

As one of the largest events of Greek Week, Dance Comp will showcase choreographed dance moves from each chapter. A panel of judges will rank the chapters’ dance routines based on originality, technicality, enthusiasm, energy and overall performance. This years’ theme allowed chapters to choose their music on a first come, first serve basis, which will en-sure a unique performance from all. Tickets for the event will be on sale during Greek Week, and will be $3 ahead of time or $5 at the door. The winning fraternity and sorority teams will be announced at the end of Dance Comp this year.

Relay For Life is a com-munity based fundraising event to support the mission of the American Cancer Society. The Vanderburgh Colleges Relay for Life is an annual event in the spring co-sponsored by the University of Southern Indiana and the University of Evansville’s Colleges Against Cancer student organizations. Relay for Life is the Ameri-can Cancer Society’s signature event that has a mission to raise funds to support cancer re-search. American Cancer Society initiatives and resources to im-prove the quality of life for can-cer patients and their caretakers are additional focuses of Relay for Life. Individuals and teams will walk around the Physical Activi-ties Center gym during the entire 12-hour event, symbolizing the

commitment to never stop fight-ing back against cancer. The night also provides entertainment, activities, tourna-ments and more to build cama-raderie and keep the participants active and awake during the long night. As Relay for Life is a cel-ebration of funds raised for the American Cancer Society, the to-tal event goal this year is to raise $37,500. “Individuals and teams can register at relayforlife.org/vanderburghcolleges leading up to the day of the event,” said Christina Johnson, president of Colleges Against Cancer at USI. “However, anyone is welcome to attend the event, even if they are not registered. The CAC commit-tee would love to see the entire USI, UE and Evansville communi-ty come out to support this great cause.”

While Greek Week is a time for competition between chapters, is also a time for the members of the Fraternity and Sorority Life community to unite as one, from testing their athletic abili-ties at Greek Olympics to raising thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society. The academic and leadership successes of the Greek community are a focus of the week as well. The 2015 Oustanding Greek Awards, presented by Fraternal Values Society on Wednesday, April 8, will honor individuals and chapters for their accomplishments in the 2014-15 aca-demic year.

The week culminates on Sunday with the closing ceremony. Hundreds of students will gather to celebrate this year’s accomplishments including a recap of Greek Week, the recipients of the Outstanding Greek Awards, a senior slide show, Senior Awards and, finally, the announce-ment of the Greek Week Winners.
