Memorial Day - a moving civic ob-servance that deserves our attention. Though there are disputes about some of the particu-lars, it’s generally acknowledged that Memori-al Day was originally known as “decoration

day,” and was first observed around the end of the Civil War in upstate NY. People made it a point to respectfully visit and decorate the graves of those killed in this nation’s blood-iest war to date. Over time, it has become a day dedicated to honor all those who died in every one of the wars and con-flicts in our nation’s history. Even more broadly now, it has become a day to remember all our loved ones who have died, which is just the right time of year to get our cemeteries in shape for summer, so as to properly honor the dead and their loved ones who mourn them. So before you turn all your attention to getting out to a beach or on the river or at a pic-nic - all of which is great - let me encourage you to consider observing Memorial Day this year by: offering some prayers for those who made the “ultimate sacrifice” in our nation’s wars; praying for real and lasting peace in the world; making a visit to a cemetery to decorate and pray at the graves of your loved ones; going to Mass at Calvary Cemetery at noon on Monday; making a gift to Calvary Cemetery to help keep it in a condition that truly honors the dead and their loved ones. ~Fr. Mark

you have a baby bottle to return please place it

Pastoral Planning One of the recommendations made over ten years ago in

the Massena area Pastoral Plan was to hire a business manager for our parish grouping. It has finally happened this spring, when Sylvie Marion joined our staff. The role of the business manager is to assist and collaborate with the pastor in business/organizational functions, so that Father is able to concentrate more on “being a pastor,” devoting more of his time to the care of souls. Responsibilities of the business manager include: dealing with vendors and contractors; monitoring spending and revenue; budget development; human resources management; “storefront” management (eg, overseeing public appearance and presentability of the parish buildings and grounds, as well as “virtual appearance” on our website and facebook pages, etc); and quite a few other things besides. Welcome Sylvie!

RACHEL'S VINEYARD: 2017 Retreats set Two Rachel's Vineyard after-abortion healing retreats will be offered in our diocese in 2017. The spring retreat will be June 16-18. The fall retreat will be September 1-3. Fr. Thomas Higman will serve as the chaplain for the spring retreat. Fr. Mark Reilly will serve as the chaplain for the fall retreat. Retreats are held at the Guggenheim Lodge in Saranac Lake. For more information and a confidential registration form please visit www.rcdony.org/prolife. Dates and locations of retreats outside of our diocese are available at www.rachelsvineyard.org. Don't suffer alone. Help is available.

Baptismal Preparation Class The next Baptismal Preparation Class will be held Monday, June 12th, 7:00pm at St. Mary’s rectory. Both parents are ex-pected to attend and Godparents are welcome. Pre-registration for this class is expected by calling the Parish Office at 769-2469. Please arrive for the meeting 15 to 20 minutes early to complete information for Baptismal certificate.

Catholic Home Missions Appeal Strengthening the Church at Home

Support the Catholic Home Missions appeal today! Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the United States are consid-

ered home missions because they are unable to fund essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support funds

programs—such as religious education, seminary formation, and lay ministry training —to build vibrant faith communities right here in the United States. Please be generous. More information

can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions

Sacred Heart League Sacred Heart League will have a covered dish dinner & meeting on June 10, 2017, immediately following the 4:00 Mass at St. Mary’s Social Hall. Members and guests are welcomed to attend.
