During his high energy presentation, professional cyclist Chris Clark shares his story of growing up with a passion for cycling and how he used that passion to make friends, stay healthy, and even as an excuse to avoid the peer pressures all children face.

Topics discussed include:Helmet / sports safetyThe importance of having an active hobbyAvoiding drugs and alcohol to reach your potentialFinding friends who support your active lifestyle

Following the speaking portion of the program, Chris shows the audience what is possible with hard work and dedication with a demonstration of the skills he has developed in his years of national and international cycling competition. Students see first-hand what can be achieved with hard work, dedication, and by leading a healthy lifestyle.

Music In Massena's HistoryMassena in the mid to late 1800’s was very different from the Massena we know today. Massena Springs began to come into vogue in 1848 when Benjamin Phillips built the United States Hotel thus providing an elegant place to reside. People came from throughout the country and abroad to partake of the healing powers of the mineral springs and enjoy the comforts of the hotel. One of the amenities provided by the Hotel was entertainment on a grand scale.

In 1851, an old Hotel register records the arrival of “The Peak Family” with seven vocalists and the original “Lancashire Bell Ringers”, one of the best traveling companies of musicians in the US at that time. At a later date the “Luca Family Singers” note their presence. They were the famous African American singing group modeled after the Hutchinson Family Singers. Our story begins however, with an invitation to an 1871 dance at White’s Hotel in downtown Massena featuring Professor Lee’s Quadrille Band considered a necessity at every attraction in those days.

“Professor” (Norris) Lee appears as a African American barber in the census records in Watertown, NY in 1860 with his wife Elizabeth and six children. By 1880, he and Elizabeth are found in Massena. It is as unclear when he came to Massena as it is to his history as he is listed in census reports as born in Arabia and Pennsylvania with dates ranging from 1791 to 1813. In the summer he ran the barber shop in the Hatfield House and in the winter ran a shop in the village in Bailey’s store. He was a fair barber and an entertaining talker, although he knew when he had said enough. He had the ability to say just the right thing at the right time….….. Nobody knew exactly how old the professor was. He himself probably did not. His hair was white and wooly. He was well along in years, but outside of that nobody knew exactly.”

After the United States Hotel burned in 1872, Shedden Hatfield a wealthy visitor to the Springs bought the property and built the Hatfield House at the enormous cost of $100,000. Hatfield, an alderman and tea-broker from Chicago had a plan to make his Hotel the most exclusive and elegant of its time. He hired “negro help” which at the time was much different from other establishments. This may account for the “Professor’s” barber shop being opened in the Hatfield.

It was said the “Professor” was a great reader and fairly well educated, keeping up on the world news. As social events at the Hatfield were ongoing and numerous, the “Professor” was in great demand “to furnish at least a part if not all the musical program. He was proud of the part he played and considered it a great honor to play at such functions. He could play by note as well as by ear. In fact he was so well educated along musical lines that he gave lessons on the violin. He was proud of his title of professor and always desired to be addressed by it.” (M.O. archives) Francis Banno, a Frenchman played the bass viola and was known to play with the “Professor” frequently. Other old-time fiddlers were Adam Revier, Harvey Russell, “Tete” Richards and Clifford Shambo (who also made fiddles).

Although the “Professor” was a renowned musician, his barbering skills were reportedly lacking. “At one time he ran a shop in the old Bentley House just north of the Hatfield. His famous hair tonics and toilet water are remembered to this day. He never won much fame as a barber. His razors would rarely split a hair and as a result his patrons were often in torment. With him barbering was more of a sideline.

The “Professor’s” daughter Julia is buried in the West Orvis Cemetery with her husband and child. (which is located behind the Chamber of Commerce building.)

During the Springs heyday more than five hundred guests came each summer to bask in the waters and attend the balls featuring the “Professor” and his Quadrille Band. Those days are far in the past but perhaps sitting in the Springs Park on a quiet night if you listen carefully you may hear the echoes of fiddles and the whisper of gowns of those from the past.
