Upon Reading This E-Book

An empowerment must be received from Living Buddha Lian-sheng or an

authorized True Buddha School master before engaging in this particular sadhana.

If one does not have the lineage empowerment, one should not, under any

circumstances, attempt this practice. Under the blessing of the empowerment,

students can quickly attain yogic responses with the Deity. Without it, the practice

will be futile and one’s act would be considered an act of stealing the Dharma.

In this e-book, mantras are translated using simple English phonetics. Sutras,

verses, and praises are translated using both English and Hanyu Pinyin. Students

should not assume that the translations can possibly emulate the exact

pronunciations of the Root Guru. It is highly recommended that students obtain

audio recordings of mantras from local True Buddha temples or chapters, or

consult with authorized True Buddha Masters.

This e-book serves as a guideline for the sadhana and teaching. Please refer to

Living Buddha Lian-sheng’s books or consult with authorized True Buddha

Masters for more detailed explanations. If you have any further questions, please

write to the True Buddha Foundation.

May the compassionate Living Buddha Lian-sheng, buddhas, bodhisattvas, and

dharma protectors bless these translated practices. May the True Buddha Tantra

liberate all beings in the Six Realms of Transmigration.

About The True Buddha School

The True Buddha School, founded by Living Buddha Lian-sheng, is a school for

spiritual cultivation. The name reflects the founder’s mission to offer authentic

lineage transmission and practice of the Tantric Dharma which can truly lead one

to buddhahood. All students who have taken refuge with the True Buddha School

must practice the True Buddha Tantra. The True Buddha Tantra is a Mahayana

practice which, by directly visualizing oneself and Buddha as "One" and, through

the cultivation of the purification of body, mind, and speech, can enable an

ordinary, worldly person to directly arrive at the realm of buddhahood.

The True Buddha School differs from other esoteric traditions in that it teaches a

unique Yoga Practice called, the Padmakumara (Lotus Bodhisattva) Vajra Yoga,

which enables the practitioner to arrive at the root guru's "siddhi" of the Maha

Twin Lotus Ponds, an inconceivable Buddha Pure Land manifested by the

Buddha Locana.

The Great Compassion Dharani Water Sadhana

by H. H. Living Buddha Lian-sheng, Sheng-yen Lu1

translation by Imelda Tan

Please obtain the empowerment and lineage transmission prior to attempting this practice.

The Great Compassion Dharani is the most renowned Dharani in the Buddhist world.

Both the Esoteric and the Vajrayana Buddhist Schools are familiar with the Great Compassion

Dharani Water, or the holy water that is empowered by the Dharani recitation.

Once upon a time, there was a 20-year-old reclusive nun who went to the mountains to

cultivate Buddhism. By the time she returned home from the mountains, she was already

50-year-old. Everyone was bewildered to discovered her skin was more brightening white

than when she was 20-year-old. Her facial complexion remained as youthful as when she

was 20-year-old. The nun reported that her body felt so light weighted that she could

almost fly. Her visual acuity was so clear that she could see objects at any distance even

penetrate the forest trees.

The people inquired about her practice and how she cultivated to achieve such good

physical health. She explained that she cultivated by reciting the Great Compassion

Dharani. The people inquired about her diet during her years living in the mountains. She

stated that she consumed wild vegetables and berries, and drank the Great Compassion

Dharani Water. The nun further explained that since she had been diligently reciting and

cultivating the Great Compassion Dharani, she had personally witnessed each dharmapala

of the Great Compassion Dharani appearing before her. Once she came across a snake

within her approaching vicinity. Upon chanting the Great Compassion Dharani, the snake

obliviously veered away from her. Another time when she recited the Great Compassion

Dharani, numerous small white lotus flowers descended from the sky. The flowers’

fragrance smelled appealingly divine!

1

The sadhana is translated from pages 45–48 of book #114 titled, "Vajrayana Practices," published on August 1995.

I have read an early work by Ms. Yang Wei Tsung about her recitation of the Great

Compassion Dharani which was very well-known in Taiwan. I have even met with Ms.

Yang Wei Tsung before. There are substantial facts to prove that her Great Compassion

Dharani Water have saved many people’s lives. Likewise, there is a nun named,

“Anonymous Nun” whose Great Compassion Dharani Water has recently been a sensational

phenomena in Taiwan.

There are different pronunciations of the Great Compassion Dharani:

1. The Esoteric Schools recite it in Mandarin.

2. I have heard the Indonesians reciting it in Pali.

3. I have heard a professor reciting it in ancient Sanskrit.

4. There are the an-ler-miao-poa2 version and many more.

When it comes to mantra recitation, we should strive to enunciate the mantra as accurate

as possible or, at least, as similar as our root guru’s transmitted pronunciation. For some

people who are used to reciting it in a certain fashion, it will be difficult for them to change

their old habits. If they change their old pronunciations, they would lose the power of the

mantra. In such case, they should stick to their accustomed method of mantra chanting.

The True Buddha School’s Great Compassion Dharani Water Sadhana is as follows:

1. Make offerings

2. Great Homage Using Visualization

3. Recite the Purification Mantras and the Invocation Mantra.

2 An-ler-miao-poa is the pin yin term used by Grand Master Lu to describe the version.

4. Form the Great Compassionate Kuan Yin Bodhisattva Mudra (the

Thousand-Handed Kuan Yin Mudra).

Spread the fingers and the hands apart

and parallel. Position the pinky fingers,

the middle fingers and the thumbs

apart and in parallel. Crisscross the

index and the ring fingers without

touching each other.

5. Visualize the Thousand-Armed Thousand-Eyed Kuan Yin Bodhisattva

appearing from the empty space. Her thousand hands and thousand eyes

emit innumerous brilliant lights which consolidate into a ray of light that

penetrates the water in a purified bottle, bowl or cup.

6. Recite the long version of the Great Compassion Dharani3 for 7, 21 or 49

times. . . . If time is of the essence, one may recite the heart mantra instead,

“Om, wa-er-la, da-mo, seh.”

7. Recite the Completion Mantra.

Note: Some practitioner perceives that at the end of reciting

the Dharani, one should form the Vajra Finger Mudra or the

Sword Mudra to write out the Thousand-Armed

Thousand-Eyed Kuan Yin Bodhisattva’s seed syllable, “seh”

3 times above the water.

I believe that the above procedure alone should suffice. The vow of the Great

Compassion Dharani engenders immense power which can eradicate heinous

transgressions accumulated from incalculable eons, deliver one to Pure Land after death,

and prevent one from falling into the three lower realms of samsara.

The Great Compassion Dharani can cure eight million four thousand types of diseases.

The Great Compassion Dharani can subdue all ghosts and celestial beings.

The Great Compassion Dharani can set-up the sacred protective boundary.

The empowered water possesses the same power as the Great Compassion Dharani!

How to Take Refuge in Living Buddha Lian-sheng

There are two ways of taking refuge in Living Buddha Lian-sheng:

1. In writing

At 7:00 a.m. (your local time) of either the first or fifteenth of a lunar month8,

face the direction of the rising sun. With palms joined, reverently, you recite

the Fourfold Refuge Mantra9 three times: “Namo Guru bei, Namo Buddha ye,

Namo Dharma ye, Namo Sangha ye” and prostrate three times.

Send a letter to the True Buddha Quarter to request a refuge empowerment.

State your name, address, age, and enclose a voluntary offering10. Upon

receiving your letter, the True Buddha Foundation will send a certificate, a

picture of Living Buddha Lian-sheng, and a note stating the level of practice

you should start with. The address of the True Buddha Quarter is:

True Buddha Quarter

17102 NE 40th Ct., Redmond,

WA 98052 USA

2. In person

You may receive refuge empowerment personally from Living Buddha

Lian-sheng by making an appointment to visit the True Buddha Quarter in

Redmond, Washington, USA. Alternatively, you may obtain refuge

empowerment personally from any authorized True Buddha Master by

visiting a True Buddha temple or local chapter11, or by attending a True

Buddha ceremony.

8

To find out the dates of the first or fifteenth of a lunar month, please refer to the Western-Chinese calendar converter at

http://www.mandarintools.com/calendar.html. 9

In Vajrayana, the Fourfold Mantra is as follows: “Namo Guru bei” means I invoke the Guru who is the embodiment of all

refuges. “Namo Buddha ye” means I invoke the Enlightened One who is the source of refuge. “Namo Dharma ye” means I

invoke the Teaching (Practice or Way) which is the actual refuge. “Namo Sangha ye” means I invoke the community which is
