International Conference on Transition Observation-Knowledge-Intelligence (TOKI 2014)

INTRODUCTION:Suggested Topics on Grant Proposal Writing1. Identifying opportunities and related conditions2. What to look for in calls: qualification requirements, relevance of

competence, relevance of field of study, deadlines, etc3.Proposal content: science or problem to solve, proposal format,

budgeting, time scale, resource personnel, etc4. Where and when to get administrative supports, need for peer

review, etc5. Evaluation of capacity to carry out the planed project6. Leg-running: establishing contacts within and outside the

financing structure to “defend” the project.7. Alternative funder(s), need for co-finance or additional funders8. Project sustainability and when to start writing the next proposal

INTRODUCTIONHumanity relies on basic and applied

knowledge derived from research for survival, development and sustenance of the environment.

Stake holders (government department, corporation, foundation or trust, nonprofits organizations, educational institution, business organizations and individual) provide grants (non-repayable funds disbursed to the recipient(s)) to support research in various areas.

Page 4: GRANT PROPOSAL WRITING

OPPORTUNITIESDemocratizedPart of Commonwealth and relevant

convention signatories Current availability of local funds(TETFUND,

FOUNDATIONS AND HIGHER INSTITUTIONS)

Willingness of younger colleagues to do research

Page 5: GRANT PROPOSAL WRITING

WEAKNESSTrust ( Scam)Minimal interaction with colleagues from

other countries to raise level of competence in proposal writing

High cost of PG studiesLack of grant writing skills

Page 6: GRANT PROPOSAL WRITING

IDENTIFYING OPPORTUNITIES AND RELATED CONDITIONS A research problem must have been

identified by either the donor or potential recipient.

The donor identifies the research problem, makes advert(online, news papers etc) with the conditions for granting the award well spelt out .

The researcher may identify the research problem and makes an unsolicited application.

In either case a grant proposal must be written by the potential recipient to the donor

Page 7: GRANT PROPOSAL WRITING

GRANT PROPOSAL WRITINGThe first step is to study the call carefully and

answer the following questionsAm I or my research team qualified with

relevant competence and can beat the dead line for submission?

If the answers to all the aspects of this question are yes please go ahead.

Page 8: GRANT PROPOSAL WRITING

APPLING FOR THE GRANTAppling for the grant requires filling out an application form.

Solicited or none solicited, the general guidelines are as follows.

Page 9: GRANT PROPOSAL WRITING

THEMATIC Clearly indicate your area of interest and

ensure that the title of the proposal is in line with the sub- themes which may be presented as

A: Infrastructural Development and Management

B: Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities C: Science & Technology D: Cross-cutting Areas

Page 10: GRANT PROPOSAL WRITING

TITLE OF THE PROJECTThe title of the research project should reflect the set objectives of the donor easy to understand without ambiguity. This requires a thorough understanding of

the interest of the potential donor

Page 11: GRANT PROPOSAL WRITING

Sample Title Production and Commercialization of

Contact Details of the CollaboratorsSame as has been done for the project leader.

They may be more than five and from different Departments, Faculties and Universities.

Page 14: GRANT PROPOSAL WRITING

Priority Area

The applicants must clearly show an understanding of the problem (the specific area that the project addresses) that the research sets out to solve. Proposal which do not address identified problem in the call cannot win any grant.

Some may require you to send concept notes

Page 15: GRANT PROPOSAL WRITING

Project LocationThe place where the research will be carried

out should be clearly stated including travels to analyse data in other laboratories within and outside the country. Should there be need for any inception workshop or pre-proposal workshop, it should be so clearly stated.

Page 16: GRANT PROPOSAL WRITING

THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT

It will reduce waste, provides low-cost and convenient bye products that can be used to operate small scale industry that will sustain specialized body cream industry.

People with very sensitive skin will find the cream very useful

Employment generationInstitution for adoption of packages for training of

students and researchEntrepreneurs will adopt the technology and start

manufacturing the cream for sale

Page 17: GRANT PROPOSAL WRITING

Duration of the Project and work plan:

The length of the project must be clearly stated.

It is clearer to do this in stages or phases and may be presented in tabular form as shown in the example.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK AND THE RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This gives a concise description of the experimental designs and activities that will be carried out to deliver the result of the project.

SAMPLE: This project sets out to: Extract oil from Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) for small scale industrial

development in Nigeria. Analyzed the oil to determine it suitability for use in the production of

body cream. The oil if suitable will be used as raw materials to produce body

cream . Establish a pilot small scale body cream industry that is self sustaining. The technology will be offered to interested entrepreneur for adoption

through awareness creation. The established pilot centre will be promoted for adoption by other

research institutes and institutions as training centres for students, entrepreneurs and employees.

Page 20: GRANT PROPOSAL WRITING

Objectives

Describe the impact/ change that the Project hopes to bring about by delivering its results provided certain assumptions hold.

It should also be presented in summary form or in a log frame.

This is the reason for the project and should address an identified constraint and be demand-driven.

A summary of any significant work already carried out in this area will be added advantage.

Page 21: GRANT PROPOSAL WRITING

SAMPLE: Short term objectives of research:

This research seeks to- Leverage on existing knowledge of waste from

African mud catfish and turn the waste to valuable body cream and soap.

Provide profile of the nutrients composition from different carcass of the fish.

Demonstrate that the quality and quantities of catfish oil extract can serve as important raw material to existing and potential cottage industries.

Quantify the job creation potentials from the catfish oil.

Page 22: GRANT PROPOSAL WRITING

Sample: Long term objectives of research:

Development of SME for the production of specialized

body cream and soap. Establish a pilot commercial industry based on catfish

oil within Lagos State University. Unleash growth and development of the catfish

industry by broadening the down-stream market such as: Fish oil for cooking, Catfish oil for food processing plants, catfish oil for pharmaceutical industry, catfish oil for cosmetics industry(soap and body cream ), catfish Steaks, minced catfish, and breaded catfish (flesh) for fast food and Supermarket.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES, OUTPUTS AND INDICATORSActivity Expected Outcome/Impact Indicator

A. Phase one: Research :1. Purchase of 10kg live catfish from fish farm, transportation of the fish to laboratory for oil extraction.

Creation of : Market for fish farmers Engagement of researchers,

research assistants and students.

Availability of fish oil for laboratory analysis.

Researchers will be busy carrying out one of their primary function while students will be fully engaged and earn additional income.

2. Analysis of fish oil in the laboratory to determine its composition.

Information will be generated on the composition of catfish oil in Lagos State.

The suitability of catfish oil in body cream making or otherwise would have been established.
