The San Francisco Zoo

Senior Stroll

Last month our field trip was to The San Francisco Zoo Senior Stroll. This incredibly beautiful 100 acre park was originally

opened in 1929. It is a wondrous site which houses more than 1000 individual animals representing over 250 species!

The weather on the day of our visit was absolutely perfect - sunny skies and warm. The mild San Francisco climate meant

most of the attractions were open to the public and the animals were out in full view; including the gorillas, rhinos, tigers,

bears, giraffes, zebra and more. We saw some actual reindeer and we were surprised to learn that the females are the

ones with the antlers and NOT the males (like the ones who pull Santa's sleigh). Stella, our guide from the Education

Center (pictured in the upper right hand corner above), was EXTREMELY helpful and went out of her way to make sure

we all got the best possible experience from our time at the zoo. She even went so far as to give a few of our mobility

challenged residents a personalized tour on a motorized tram. Now, that’s what I call a gracious host.

Happy Holidays à la The Granada December was packed full of parties. We had

everything from THE SONGBIRDS singing multi-

national Christmas Carols to Hanukkah baskets

delivered from The Jewish Family & Children's

Services. There were Xmas parties for both the

employees and the residents as well as a Tree

Trimming Party and a New Years Eve Party. Not

to mention our regular monthly Birthday Party,

bi-weekly Ice Cream Socials and our weekly

Happy Hour Parties. Whew!

Meet Miriam

You have probably seen her around but here is your

chance to get to know a little bit more about the woman

behind the smile. Miriam Rubio Sevilla was born in Na-

yarit, Mexico but has lived in the United States for the

past 10 years. She received an Associates Degree in the

medical field from Bryant & Stratton College in New York

before moving to San Francisco. She is currently enrolled

in the Pre-Nursing Program at City College. In her spare

time, she likes to play her guitar or go for long bike rides

and hikes, exploring some of the scenic areas and beauti-

ful vistas California has to offer. Miriam says she is a real

“people person” and truly enjoys being here at The Gra-

nada. I think we can all agree that the feeling is mutual.

A very Happy New Year 2016 from the Staff and Management of the Granada. This inspirational time has given us cause to live each day with zest and to continually grow and strive to our highest potential and be our best. I’d also like to lose some weight.

January is named after the Roman god Janus, the god of beginnings and transitions, who was always shown as having two heads. He looked back to the last year and forward to the new one. Lets us all take a moment to reflect back on the events of the last year and em-brace the bright new year ahead of us.

On Sunday January 17, our monthly field trip we will be a trek to Golden Gate Fields Dollar Day for an event full of exciting horseracing. Every-thing, including admission, pro-grams, hot dogs, sodas and beers cost only ONE DOLLAR each!

January 18 is Martin Luther King Day. Please join us for a special dinner celebration to commemo-rate the achievements of this great man.

I am glad to see we are finally getting some rain but, let’s not forget California is still experiencing a severe drought. Anything you can do to conserve water, including taking shorter showers and not letting the water run while you shave or brush your teeth will help a great deal.

I just returned from a trip with my wife and daughter to Las Noches de Las Luminarias at the Phoenix De-sert Botanical Garden. It was spec-tacular! Here is a picture I took.
