The Bible – Lesson 1

PARENTS: Earlier in the program year, parents received letter and encouragement to practice

at home with Scripture. Children received an introduction with a Bible packet for practice and activity in classroom. The Bible is a tool that will be useful in their spiritual growth in the coming years. This lesson is a review of:

• What is the Bible?

• How do I look up verses in the Bible?

• Practicing finding Scripture and reading from the Bible

The Church desires children to learn to respect the Bible as the authority that can tell them how to live. Therefore, it is not enough that children just hear others teach them the Bible. They must learn to use the Bible and to read the Bible themselves. They should learn how to get around in the Bible, and how to find verses and passages they need in the Bible. Read and Review: The Bible is a library of books. “The Book” is not just one book. It is a library of books, put together in one volume. There are 73 books in the Catholic Bible. The Bible is God’s word and man’s word. One must understand man’s word first in order to understand the word of God. Know that, if you want to understand what God has to tell you through Scripture (another word for the writings in the Bible), you must first understand what the writer wants to say. This will take practice, but first, we are going to take a look at the contents of your Bible!

ACTIVITY: Find the following parts of the bible:

Testaments – An agreement between God & man. The bible is divided into two parts: the Old

Testament and the New Testament. See that the Old Testament is much longer than the New Testament. Remember …. “Old” (before Jesus) and “New” (about & after Jesus) See and find the title pages that say Old Testament and New Testament.

TITLE PAGE: The Testament (OT) is the first part of a complete Bible. It is the

older part of the Bible, the part that was written first. It is the history of God’s people in old times. Everything in the Old Testament happened before Jesus was born. It points to Jesus, telling us THE SAVIOR WILL COME.

TITLE PAGE: The Testament (NT) is the second part of a complete Bible. It is the newer part of the Bible. It is the story of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, and of His followers, the church. It was written shortly after Jesus’ death. It, too, points to Jesus, telling us THE SAVIOR HAS COME.

Guide or General Index – This lists the names and order of the books of the Old and New

Testaments and also, the Abbreviations lists. (Try to read some of the names.)

How to look up passages in the bible You have seen the list of books and their order listed divided into the Old and New Testaments. The authors of these books are mostly unknown and these books were not written at the same time. There are many centuries between the oldest traditions and the last book of the Bible. Not even the original language of all these books was the same; therefore, interpretation was needed. Parts of the Bible: BOOK: The Testaments are further divided into BOOKS. Each book has an introduction and footnotes to help understand what you will be reading. HINT: Bibles are set up much like a dictionary with the book names and chapter numbers ‘range’ listed on the top of the pages. CHAPTER: When a book of the Bible is divided for reading. Look for “larger numbers”. VERSE: When chapters are divided for reading. Look for the “tiny” numbers within what looks like paragraphs. EXAMPLES:

Genesis 1 refers to the book of Genesis

Genesis 1:1 refers to the book of Genesis, chapter 1, verse 1.

Genesis 1:1-13 refers to the book of Genesis, chapter 1, verse 1 to 13 inclusive.

SACRAMENTS – Lesson 3

Read and Review: What is the purpose of signs? To show us things that we cannot see. What is a sacrament? A sign of God’s love and grace. Jesus instituted the seven sacraments. What is grace? God’s gift to share in his love, to nourish our soul, to get us to Heaven. The Seven Sacraments The sacraments are the heart of the Catholic life. They connect us with the love and grace of God in a real way. Jesus touches our lives through the sacraments. Our celebrations of the sacraments are signs of Jesus' presence in our lives and a means for receiving his grace. The Church celebrates seven sacraments.

Baptism – From the moment of our baptism, God has a special plan for each of us. In Baptism we

receive new life in Christ. Baptism takes away original sin and gives us a new birth in the Holy Spirit. Its sign is the pouring of water. What do we hear? The words the priest or deacon says when baptizing are “I baptize you in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. What do we feel? Water is poured over the head three times. What do we smell? Scented holy oil is marked on the forehead. What do you see? A candle is lit, light shared from the Easter candle ***ACTIVITY: Discuss your child’s Baptism day (date, where, who was there, godparents, celebration, etc.).

Reconciliation – Through Penance we receive God's forgiveness. Forgiveness requires being

sorry for our sins. The signs of this sacrament are our confession of sins and the words of absolution. ***ACTIVITY: Discuss your child’s Reconciliation experiences. Have they celebrated the sacrament since their First Reconciliation?

Eucharist – The Eucharist nourishes our life of faith. Its signs are the bread and wine we receive—

the Body and Blood of Christ. ***ACTIVITY: Discuss your child’s First Communion day. Talk about how attending Mass and receiving the Eucharist is truly important in our Faith.

Confirmation - God strengthens and increase the life of the Holy Spirit within us, so that we will

have the inspiration and strength to respond to God’s call. Confirmation seals our life of faith in Jesus. Its signs are the laying on of hands on a person’s head, most often by a bishop, and the anointing with oil. Confirmation is received only once.

St. Bronislava Religious Education Aug 2019

Matrimony (marriage) – A baptized man and woman are united with each other as a sign of the

unity between Jesus and his Church. The couple and their wedding rings are the signs of this sacrament.

Holy Orders – Holy Orders is received by men to be priests or deacons. God calls each of us to

serve Him and His Church in a specific way of life. In Holy Orders men are ordained as priests, deacons, or bishops. The signs of this sacrament are the laying on of hands and anointing with oil by the bishop.

Anointing of the Sick – Only sick people can receive Anointing of the Sick. They are anointed

with oil and prayers are said that they will be strengthened in their illness and spirit. This sacrament unites a sick person’s suffering with that of Jesus and brings forgiveness of sins. The signs are anointing with oil, a symbol of strength, and receives the laying on of hands from a priest.

sacrament.

MARY, OUR MOTHER– Lesson 4

Read and Review: The Blessed Virgin Mary is a saint and can pray for us. Mary is the Mother of

Jesus. Jesus is God the Son. Therefore, Mary is the Mother of God. Mary was with Jesus when He was crucified, suffering with Him. Jesus gave Mary to us as our Mother to love and care for us.

We honor Mary because she is the mother of our Savior. Jesus gave her to us as our mother. She

leads us to Jesus. Think of Mary as your spiritual mother. Her parents are St. Anne & St. Joachim.

Mary is known by MANY names.

• The Immaculate Conception. She is the only person who was ever conceived without Original Sin.

• Queen of Heaven. Mary was assumed into Heaven (body & soul), crowned Queen and now intercedes for us with her Son.

• Full of Grace: The Angel Gabriel called Mary this in Luke 1:28.

• Mother of God. She is the mother of Jesus, who is both fully God and fully man.

• Our Lady. An honorable name, as in courtly manners (of noble women and queens).

• Lady of the Rosary: The story of the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary focuses on the intercessory power of Mary. It shows that when Christians are in danger, they can go to Mary. And when an individual is in pain, discouraged, or having trouble accepting God’s will, he or she can also go to Mary. She will pray to her Son for anyone who calls on her. Anyone who prays to Mary no longer feels alone because she prays with them and for them. We The Angel Gabriel called Mary this in Luke 1:28.

Why should we ask Mary to pray for us? Because Jesus listens to His mother. What was Mary’s greatest desire? It was to do the Will of God. She said YES. Mary followed God’s will for her. Think about what God’s will is for you.

The Rosary Read and Review: Mary never fails those who go to her in prayer. We should develop a habit of

personal prayer. The Rosary is a wonderful form of prayer by which we meditate (think about deeply or with focus) upon the mysteries of Christ's life and ask Mary's intercessions. The word rosary comes from the Latin word, rosarius, which means crown of roses.

The Rosary helps us to pray to Jesus through Mary. When we pray the Rosary, we think about or meditate on the special events, or mysteries, in the lives of Jesus and Mary.

ACTIVITY: Find these bible stories about Mary’s life’s events. These events are Rosary Mysteries. o The Annunciation: The angel told Mary she would Have a baby. Luke 1:30-31 o The Visitation: Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth. Luke 1:39 o The Nativity: Mary had the Baby Jesus. Luke 2:7 o The Presentation: Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the Temple to pray. Luke 2:22 o The finding of Jesus in the Temple: Mary and Joseph found Jesus. Luke 2:45 o The Assumption: Mary went to heaven. Judith 15:10 o The Coronation: Mary became queen. Revelation 12:1

What are the Mysteries of the Rosary?

Read and Review: The Mysteries of the Rosary are events in the life of Jesus and Mary, in which

we meditate upon as we pray the Rosary. For each decade (Our Father, 10 Hail Mary’s, Glory Be), a mystery is announced. There are four groups of Mysteries and are dedicated for praying on certain days of the week. Learn about the mysteries and of the lives of Jesus and Mary below.

THE JOYFUL MYSTERIES (Mondays and Saturdays) As we hold our rosary and pray the Hail Mary

over and over again, we think about happy times in Mary’s life. We call these the Joyful Mysteries.

• The Annunciation: The angel Gabriel asks Mary to be the Mother of Jesus.

• The Visitation: Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth. Elizabeth’s baby (St. John the Baptist) recognizes Mary’s baby (Jesus). Both babies are still in the womb!

• The Nativity: Mary gives birth to Jesus in a manger.

• The Presentation: Mary and Joseph take Jesus to the Temple, and Simeon and Anna recognize Jesus as the Messiah.

• The Finding in the Temple: Mary and Joseph fear Jesus is lost. They find him teaching in the Temple.

THE LUMINOUS MYSTERIES (Thursdays) As we pray the Hail Marys, we think about the public ministry

of Jesus. We call these the Luminous Mysteries. Luminous means light. Light helps us to understand.

• The Baptism of Jesus: Jesus is baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River.

• The Wedding at Cana: Jesus turns water into wine at a wedding celebration.

• The Proclamation of the Kingdom: Jesus talks about putting God first in our lives.

• The Transfiguration: Jesus takes Peter, James and John up on a mountain. He talks with Moses and Elijah. He is shining.

• The Institution of the Eucharist: Jesus gives us his Body and Blood for the first time at the Last Supper.

THE SORROWFUL MYSTERIES (Tuesdays and Fridays) As we pray the Hail Mary over and over again,

we think about the very difficult times in Jesus’ life. We call these the Sorrowful Mysteries.

• The Agony in the Garden: Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane, but his disciples fall asleep.

• The Scourging at the Pillar: Jesus is arrested and taken to the jail where the soldiers make fun of him and whip him.

• The Crowning of Thorns: The soldiers take a thorny vine, wind it in circles and press it on Jesus’ head.

• The Carrying of the Cross: Jesus is forced to carry the heavy wood of the cross.

• The Crucifixion: Jesus is nailed to the cross. THE GLORIOUS MYSTERIES (Wednesdays and Sundays) As we pray the Hail Marys, we think about

the wonderful times in Jesus’ life and in Mary’s life after the Crucifixion. We call these the Glorious Mysteries.

• The Resurrection: Jesus rises from the dead.

• The Ascension: Jesus ascends to heaven after telling his disciples that he will be with them in Spirit forever.

• The Descent of the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit comes as a wonderful gift from Jesus to teach our hearts and minds about God.

• The Assumption: Mary is taken up into heaven, body and soul.

• The Coronation: God gives Mary a special place in heaven, crowning her Queen of Heaven and Earth.

How to Pray the Rosary

The Rosary is made up of a string of beads and a crucifix. We hold the crucifix in our hands as we pray the Sign of the Cross. Then we pray the Apostles' Creed. Other prayers in the Rosary are the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be. Use the next pages to learn and to review the prayers of the Rosary and how to pray the Rosary.

A complete rosary consists of a

series of 150 beads divided into 15

groups or decades of ten beads

each. Decades are usually

separated by one larger bead

connected on a string or chain.

Extending from this string are five

other beads, two large and three

small, and a crucifix. Most rosaries

consist of five decades. Some

rosaries may consist of all fifteen

decades.

Prayers of the Rosary You may know these prayers; however, praying the rosary can slow us down, calm our hearts, and have a profound spiritual effect. Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of God, the Father

Almighty; from thence He shall coe to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Glory Be Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and

ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Hail Holy Queen

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate,

thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Oh clement, oh loving, oh sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

Fatima Invocation O my Jesus, forgive us our sins. Save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.
