SCW Recruiting Party Dinner

February 16th, 2012

Governor David Gilbert Linville presides over our dinner gathering in this elegant,Versailles-like private dining room at the prestigious Casino Club in Chicago. Fellow Warrior, Thomas James Krupp, II, graciously hosted our recruiting party. This event was the first of its kind in many years, and was very well attended by about 20 prospective SCW candidates and as many Warriors. Special thanks go to new Membership & Social Events Chairman, Brian White for planning this wonderful and productive event.

Governor’s Report to the Membership

David Gilbert Linville  It seems like Winter Court was yesterday but we are already approaching our Summer Court, invitations have been mailed, and the General Society Meeting in New Orleans is just weeks away. The Illinois Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Illinois has been active this year. In February, we had one of our four lunch/business meetings, followed by a very successful cocktail and dinner party for the purpose of recruiting at the Casino Club.

In April, we had another lunch/business meeting where we continued to push our brand new website along. In May, three of us will travel to New Orleans for the General Society Meeting, and following that on May 20th our Summer Court will once again be held at Shoreacres. On the 21st of May, some of us will be joining the National Society of the Colonial Dames in the State of Illinois for a three-day trip to Springfield to explore all things Lincoln. Finally, work is ongoing for the Summer Dinner Dance at the Sheridan Shore Yacht Club. All of this is just an overview of what the Council has been and will be doing. All of our activities have been carefully discussed in our minutes every quarter. Everyone on the Council is working very hard on behalf of our Society, there is work to be done every day, and their volunteer spirit is truly inspirational. No one ducks the tasks to be performed, everyone jumps in and just gets after it and gets the job done. By the end of 2012, our Society will have accomplished so much, all of which we have discussed often. There will always be much to do, but we have two areas which are vital to our future which we need to concentrate on: Recruiting and Signing of New Members While we have already started this process, and have worked on it for years, recruiting is a difficult task. Many of us in our Society are here because of our love of history, our interest in our genealogy, and because we enjoy the camaraderie of gentlemen. But as we look at the country we live in, we see a place where young people are taught less and less history in school, have little or no interest in history, no interest in their family history, and who grow up in families that teach them nothing of their history. Finally, so many young people live in front of computers and smart phones, have interests in little other than the day in front of them, and do not seek venues where gentlemen gather. We need to make our Society one in which we can attract those men who have an interest in history, seek them out and recruit them, and let them see that we are a serious…and fun…group of gentlemen doing good work. I believe this process has begun, and our recruiting party was the “right thing” to do. It was sophisticated, it was fun, it was first class. We need to follow up on our efforts and keep up our momentum. We need our members, themselves, to be recruiters (not just acknowledge the need for recruitment), and to actually put people forward from their friends or families. We need to think of other creative activities we might engage in:

• a golf game and dinner, • an afternoon at the horse races, • a meeting at one of our clubs for dinner (i.e., less planning, more informal), • cocktail parties at our homes.

These are just several events that come to mind. Fellow Warrior, Al Tippens, has given parties, Barry Carroll has hosted the Shootout, and I am sure there have been others as well who have hosted wonderful events over the years. So, expanding our SCW calendar is not new…and, perhaps we could make these gatherings more frequent and/or targeted to specific members and prospective members. As a committed group, let’s come up with fresh ideas and talk them over…after all, membership is our future.

Re-engaging Our Long-Time, Senior Members While we have many older members - gentlemen who have been with the Society for many years – many of them no longer or rarely attend meetings or events. These are the men who kept the Society vibrant for many years. Some find the travel difficult, some are no longer interested, and some may not be well. What can we do to create a venue which will peak their interest so if they can come they might just do so? Here again, fellow Warriors, let us work on this, let us find some ways to bring more of our membership together. This would be a significant gain for all Warriors young and old. In ending, I hope this message reflects all the wonderful and important things the ISCW is doing every day, and at the same time gives a message of some things we need to keep working on to keep our future strong.

Warrior’s Heritage

Captain James Avery, Ancestor of Philip May Beginnings Captain James Avery was born in England in about 1620, and came to America with his father, and settled in Gloucester, but relocated to New London in 1651. He was much interested in military affairs and became a Captain in the local militia. He was married to Joanna Greenslade of Boston, MA.

King Philip’s War Captain Avery commanded a group of friendly Pequot and Mohegan Indians at the Narragansett swamp fight in King Philip’s War. He was also prominent in several subsequent forays into Indian Territory, which occurred in the latter part of the conflict. In civil life he served many years as representative to the General Court and as a judge upon the bench. Captain Avery died at New London in 1700.

Subsequent Generations The Avery family continued to live in New London for several generations until the mid 18th century when they moved to Alfred, NY. The family name, through several marriages eventually became Langworthy. The Langworthy’s were an old Rhode Island family and like many Rhode Islanders had migrated to western New York State in the early nineteenth century. The marriage of William Pendleton Langworthy and Susan Rogers Stillman in 1826 yielded my Great Grandmother Harriet Adella Langworthy. Harriet was married in 1851 to Franklin Rial Wescott. Franklin Wescott was a descendent of Stuckely Westcott who, along with Roger Williams and 12 others founded Rhode Island and Providence Plantation.

Migration to the Midwest In 1855 Franklin Westcott and Harriet Langworthy, along with their son and newborn daughter Sarah Jane headed for Wisconsin. They boarded a ship in Buffalo, NY, and sailed for Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Upon disembarking, they traveled by team and wagon to the town of Albion where they stayed for six months with Franklin’s brother Varnum. They purchased 60 acres of farmland, and built a house and raised four children.

Chicago In 1875 Chicago was a post fire boomtown, and Sarah Jane Wescott left the farm and headed there. She met and married Peter Conway an enterprising livery wagon owner and driver. They had seven children of which number five, Ethel Margaret Conway is my grandmother. She married Daniel May, Jr. and they had four children of which my father Daniel J. May III was the oldest. The May family came to Chicago in 1850 from Germany, and lived through the great Chicago Fire. The May family has resided in Chicago ever since.

Winter Court December 1, 2011 Sunset Ridge Country Club

The Society held its annual Winter Court event at Sunset Ridge Country Club on December 1, 2011. As per usual, ISCW Governor, David Linville, started the event by welcoming all Warriors and their male guests with cocktails beginning at 5:30 p.m., then he conducted our Council’s Officers and Directors Winter Court at 6:30 p.m. by asking all Committee Chairs to deliver their respective committee reports, then asked all Warriors and their guests to convene in the dining room for dinner. After all attendees were seated, Governor Linville rose and gave a warm welcome to all gentlemen at the 2011 Winter Court. He then introduced Warrior and past ISCW Governor, Albert Tippens, to the Court, and asked Mr. Tippens to give his usual warm and colorful invocation. Governor Linville then asked several Warriors to deliver the ceremonial toasts to the Queen of England, the Office of the President of the United States of America, to the Founders of our great country, to all

members of all branches of the Armed Services, both fallen and present, and finally to all Warriors present. A large number of “Here Here’s” were called out in celebration. After a delicious dinner and accompanying wines, Governor Linville then called upon Warrior and Membership & Social Events Chairman, Jim Rudwall, who had secured our guest speaker. Mr. Rudwall rose and gave a very warm and thorough introduction and background on Mr. Gary Boyd Roberts, an internationally recognized and widely published genealogist and historian on the American Colonies, the U.S. Presidents, European families of Royal Descent, etc. Mr. Roberts gave a very detailed presentation on the earliest beginnings of the European families of Royal Descent, how a great many of founding families of the American Colonies had both direct and indirect consanguinity with the various monarchs throughout Europe and select parts of the Middle East. While most Warriors found a number of portions of Mr. Roberts’ presentation to be of great interest, he has such an encyclopedic knowledge and mastery of these topics, that he probably could have spent another three or four days discussing the history of our Founding Fathers…with great granularity! Fortunately, we arranged to have Mr. Roberts’ presentation videotaped for use on our Society’s new website, principally for new member recruiting purposes. At the conclusion of Mr. Roberts’ talk, Warriors remained in the dining room for over 30 minutes asking him specific questions about these topics. Governor Linville then rose to thank all Warriors and their guests for attending the Winter Court, and reminded them to keep a close eye on incoming invitations for future SCW events in 2012.

Society Continues Historic Contributions ISCW Secretary and Treasurer, John Strothman, announced the Society’s contributions to the following organizations in 2012:

• Winnetka Library - $500.00 • Newberry Library - $2,000.00 dollars. • The matching funds from the General Society should be $2,500.00. • Note: The Secretary reported we will no longer be funding Northwestern’s Department of

Historical Studies as this Department is not going to be continued after Mr. Breen’s departure. The funds will be used to contribute to the development of our new website.

Timely Payment of Dues

As a friendly reminder, the Council urges all Warriors to pay your dues on a timely basis. This is a common courtesy, of course. An issue that the Council deals with is the increase in administrative costs (i.e., mailing costs, additional processing charges, etc.) as a result of multiple mailings to those members who haven’t paid their dues. Thank you.

Warrior Passing

Michael T. Kelly, Ed. D. We regret to inform our Warriors of the passing of fellow Warrior, Michael T. Kelly on February 6, 2012. Michael had done much for ISCW since his induction to our membership in 2010, including being our Winter Court guest speaker in 2010, and acting as a guiding force in the editing of the 2011 video presentation of Gary Boyd Roberts at our Winter Court of 2011.

Michael was the former President of the Illinois Society of the Sons of the Revolution, as well as the Vice President Regional (National) for SR. He also served as an Advisor to his college fraternity at the national and local level, was an active lay person in his parish church, was an avid fan of Irish music and culture, and still found time to serve the many needs of his position as Dean of Students at Northeastern University. He was an educational doctoral graduate at The College of William and Mary (Virginia). Michael is survived by his wife, Paula, and son, Thomas.
