SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE : KALAHANDI

1. Location : Kalahandi district is one of the southern located districts in

Odisha. It lies between 82o32’ to 83o47’ East longitude and between 19o8’ to

20o25’ North latitude. It is bounded by the Bolangir district in north, Rayagada

district in south, Khandamal district in the east and Nuapada district in the

west.

2. Climate : The climate condition of the district is generally hot with high

humidity during March to August and cold during September to February. The

monsoon generally breaks during the month of June. Annual rainfall of the

district was 1174.1 m.m in 2011 which is lower than the normal rainfall

(1330.5 m.m).

3. Area and Population : The district has an area of 7920 sq.kms and 15.77

lakhs of population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 5.09 percent

of the states territory and shares 3.76 percent of the states population. The

density of population of the district is 199 per sq. kms., as against 270 person

per sq.km of the state. It has 2236 villages ( including 137 un-inhabited

villages ) covering 13 blocks, 13 Tahasils and 2 Subdivisions. As per 2011

census the schedule caste population is 286580 (18.17.%) and schedule tribe

population 449456 ( 28.50 %) . The literacy percentage o the district covers

52.90 against 72.90 of the state.

4. Agriculture : During the year 2010-11, the net area sown was 267 thousand

hectares against 4681 thousand hectares of the state. The production of

paddy was 9626227 quintals, 34141 quintals maize, 7840 quintals ragi,

30215 quintals mung, 16131 quintals biri, 21798 quintals kulthi, 1265 quintals

till, 42416 quintals groundnuts and 1427 quintals mustard. During 2010-11

the total fertilizers used in Kalahandi district is about 52.90 thousand MT with

a breakage of 26.54 thousand MT nitrogenous, 16.64 thousand MT

phosphatic and 9.72 thousand MT pottasic and the consumption of fertilizer

per hectare is 95 Kg.

5. Irrigation : During the year 2010-11, it is reported by the Deputy Director,

Agriculture, Kalahandi that the irrigation potential created in various sources

during Kharif and Rabi are 146789 hectares and 97516 hectares respectively.

6. Education : There were 1392 nos. of primary schools, 656 nos. of middle

schools, 241 nos. of Secondary Schools and 36 nos. of general colleges in

the district during 2010-11. Besides there is one No of Engineering College in

the district during year 2010-11 to impart technical education.

7. Health : The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt.,

Private individuals and voluntary organizations in the district. There were 64

nos. of the Allopathic medical institutions with 466 beds facilities, 19 nos. of

Homoeopathic dispensaries and 20 nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries in the

district during the year 2010-11.

8. Veterinary Services : During the year 2010-11, 30 nos. of Hospitals and

dispensaries, 158 nos. of livestock Aid centers and 131 nos of Artificial

Insemination centre were functioning in Kalahandi district to provide

veterinary services to the people.

9. Industry and Mining : During the year 2010-11, 118 nos. of small scale

industries have established with total capital investment of about Rs. 702.00

lakhs with 573 nos. of Employment generated in Kalahandi district. Besides

various kinds of handicraft works like wood craft & terakata have been

developed by the skilled workers and artisans of the district.

10. Power : Consumption of electricity in Kalahandi district during the year

covers 120.548 million units and villages so far electrified as on 2010-11 is

1347 which constitutes 64.2 % to the total villages of the district.

11. Tourist : There are 17 nos. of tourist center such as Amathagarh, Ampani,

Asurgarh, Belkhandi, Bhawanipatna, Dharamgarh, Gudahandi, Jakam,

Junagarh, Karalapat, Kusural, Mardiguda, Phurlijharan, Rabandarh,

Sapagaranda, Talguda and Thuamul-Rampur identified by department of

Tourism and Culture, Odisha. During 2011, the numbers of Domestic tourists

were 228532 and foreign tourists were 54 who visited the tourists spots of

the district.

12. Transport & Communication : During 2010-11, 184 kms. of National

Highways, 119 kms. of state highways, 291 Kms. of Major district roads, 79

kms. of other district roads, 11945 Kms, of Gram Panchayat roads,608 Kms.

of P.S roads, 1068 Kms of Village roads and 311 kms. of forest roads are

operating in the district. Besides, 38.43 kms. of Railway lines with 5 nos. of

railway stations are continuing in the district.

13. Banking : As on March 2011, there were 92 nos. of schedule commercial

banks having 1277 crores rupees deposit and 832 crores rupees credit in the

district.
