Gothic peoples, the Goths

•Easter European tribe.

•Appeared on the Roman Empire border in the 3rd c.

•They repeatedly attacked the Roman Empire during the Gothic War (376-382).

•5th-6th c. separated into two tribes, and established powerful states of the Western Roman Empire.

•Gothic language and culture largely disappeared during the Middle Ages.

Gothic art

•Medieval art movement developed in France out of Romanesque art

•Mid-12th century.

•Early gothic: monumental sculpture on th e walls of cathedrals and abbeys.

•Medieval art was considered as unrefined and barbaric.

•Painting not until about 1200.

Gothic architecture

•High and late medieval period.

•12th c. France -> 16th c.

•Characteristic features: pointed arch, ribbed vault and flying buttress.

•Great cathedrals, abbeys and parish churches of Europe.

•Revivals began in mid-18th c. England. Spread 19th c. Europe.

•Continued, ecclesiastical & university structures, into the 20th c.

Gothic fiction

•End of 18th c. and into the 19th c.

•Sometimes referred to as ‘’Gothic horror.’’

•Combines horror and romance.

•Invented by Horace Walpole.

•“Gothic Revival architecture.’’

•Apreciation of the joys of the extreme emotion.

•Gothic writers often associated medieval buildings with what enforced by torture, and with mysterious, fantastic, and superstitious rituals.

Romanticism

•Romanticism, was a complex artistic, literary, and intellectual movement that originated in the second half of the 18th century in Europe.

•The movement validated strong emotion as an authentic source of aesthetic experience, placing ne w emphasis on such emotions as trepidation, horror and terror.

•Romanticism reached beyond the rational and Classicist ideal models to elevate a revived medievalism.

•The modern sense of a romantic character may be expressed in Byronic ideals of a gifted.

•The confines of the Industrial Revolution also had their influence on Romanticism.

Edgar Allan Poe

•Born January 19, 1809 – Died October 7, 1849 (40 years).

•Poet, short-story writer, editor and literaty critic.

•Different genres like: horror fiction, gothic romance, crime fiction, detective fiction, comedy and satire.

•Considered the inventor of the detective-fiction genre.

Goth rock subculture

•It began in England during the early 1980s with the gothic rock scene.

•An offshoot of the Post-punk genre.

•Inspired by romanticism and neoromanticism.

•The allure for goths of dark, mysterious, and morbid imagery and mood lies in the same tradition of Romanticism's gothic novel.

•By the 1990s, new subcultures linking goth to manga, metal rock and others, emerged, or became more popular.

•Has survived much longer than others of the same era.
