Reflecting back on the year, 2013, I remember heading down to Florida for a series of concerts and our first annual Caribbean Cruise. In the first quarter of the year, Innovative Management & Consulting (IMC) hosted and promoted 36 concert nights, three Jubilee tour dates, three multi-day events, two cruises and successfully published the first Gospel Music Quarterly. God has truly blessed us at IMC.
As I write this I am sitting on my hotel balcony in Ft. Lauderdale, FL in preparation of our annual Gospel Music Celebration Cruise. This is my absolute favorite time of the year and my most treasured event that IMC is honored to host. The artists that come on this cruise are undoubtedly some of the best artist in gospel music today and more than that… we are ALL FAMILY! I always look forward to greeting them backstage about fifteen minutes before the first program to give them final instructions for the week. During this time we join together in prayer asking God to bless the lives of the people aboard the ship to give them an once-in-a-lifetime vacation experience. Our team works a year in advance on these cruises to make sure that our programs are not just another gospel music concert, but truly a special exclusive cruise experience.
I am asked from friends, fans and artists what makes our cruises so special and how they sell out. The answer is… we cater to the people. It is a definite combination of the right artist and speakers, paired with the unmatched care of our cruise partners, Inspiration Cruises and Tours. There is also the experience of the 5-star cruiseline, Holland America Cruiseline, who takes pride in being a conservative and elegant cruiseline. In addition to concerts in the same venue each night on the ship and technical crew, we also have developed some of the funniest afternoon showcases you will ever see! There is nothing like watching your favorite gospel music artist have to answer relationship unrehearsed questions in front of an audience AND their “stay-at-home” spouse. All of this and more will make this great week aboard the finest in gospel music cruises, Gospel Music Celebration.
The last quarter of this past year has been one of the most amazing seasons for our promotion company. We developed and hosted the first ever “Cathedrals Family Reunion” event in Fort Worth, TX. Shortly after the completion of this monumental event, I had three short weeks to complete the details for our Jubilee Christmas tour that took us to 16 markets in 17 days, spread across ninety eight hundred miles. Great plans are in the works for the future of both the Christmas Jubilee Tour, and the soon-to-be announced future of Cathedrals Family Reunion events.
Something we are extremely excited about this year is the recent addition of Dailey & Vincent to our roster of artist we represent in our events and cruises. Dailey & Vincent are becoming one of the most popular artists among the bluegrass and country market. They have very strong roots in southern gospel music and showcase their style of southern gospel during almost every concert they do whether it be in a theatre or at a state fair. We just recently announced that IMC will be managing and partnering with Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent on their very first annual Bluegrass Cruise! This is so exciting because we have extended our reach into other genres of music in hopes to further reach the world with this life changing music, the Gospel in song! Because of this cruise relationship, we are trying to add Dailey & Vincent to several of our 2014/2015 events, as well as taking a large inventory of their tour dates across the nation. My prayer is that God will continue to open doors like this to broaden our reach.
In addition to all of this, our staff has been busy designing and developing two new events for 2014. These are the Pennsylvania Gospel Music Festival to be held in Hershey, PA the hometown of Hershey Chocolate Company and the Virginia Beach Gospel Music Festival in Virginia Beach, VA. Our heart for these events is to not only give you a GREAT program with all types of artists but also, to bring you to a great family atmosphere. My constant goal is to pair our music with a family-focused destination so that our attendees will want to bring their children and grandchildren with them.
Gospel music is still the greatest music in the world because of the message it carries so clearly. If it were not for my parents taking me to see the Cathedrals at such an early age, I question what I would be doing today. These concerts literally changed my life and gave me a great desire to “take the gospel into all the world”. I distinctly remember a hand-written note I received from Scott Fowler when I was only 12 years old. It was on Cathedrals stationary with their name repeatedly stamped in green letters. It said, “Landon, I know how much you love gospel music and your wish to be involved in it… keep practicing and working towards your goal. You are a great young man I am confident that God will give you the desires of your heart.” Signed “Scott Fowler – Psalm 3:5-6”.
I’m so thankful that God saw fit to give me the desires of my heart! Not only am I involved in the music, I get to serve with the very people I looked up to as a child… I even get to tell Scott Fowler what to do!

“are you ready?” I looked around only to realize he was talking to me. george younce was talking to me! “chris, come here… kirk, sit down.” I walked up the steps, onto the stage at my father’s church, where the cathedral Quartet was performing a sunday afternoon concert. I was the ripe old age of 12, to which george commented, “glen never was 12, he started out at 13!” one of my dreams came true that day as I got to sing tenor with the cathedrals! a day I will never forget.
Fast-forward 32 years to an auditorium in Fort Worth, TX. The two who made this quartet what it was, have been promoted to the Heaven they spent the better part of their lives singing about. However, the mark they made was powerful enough to draw 3,000 fans from around the world to Southwestern Seminary for two days of a Family Reunion. The weekend featured five of those who had
been blessed to share the stage with George and Glen. Scott Fowler, Danny Funderburk, Ernie Haase, Mark Trammell, and Gerald Wolfe took the stage with a grace that we can only attribute to their time with the two “old men.”
I was able to play a small part in The Cathedral Family Reunion, and that made the weekend particularly special for me. However, you need to know that, when I wasn’t on the stage, I was in the audience filling a seat as a long time fan of this legendary quartet. From the dynamic singing around the piano, to the “road stories” shared by “The Five Guys,” about their time traveling together… We laughed, cried, and were blessed to relive the feeling we would get when the promoter would step to the microphone and say, “Now, make welcome to the stage, The Cathedral Quartet!”
The Cathedral Family Reunion Event in Ft. Worth brought back so many special memories for me. It was such a pleasure to sit on the front row as a fan that weekend and just listen to the music and story’s. My late father began booking the Cathedrals in 1969 and I had the privilege of getting involved in their scheduling in 1982. Either my father or I spoke to Glen Payne nearly every day of the work week until his passing in October of 1999. Still to this day I miss him calling in just checking to see if any new dates had been booked so he could update his little black book he always had with him. It was a blessing and honor representing not only George and Glen but all the other guys who were a part of the Cathedrals. I love each and every one of them. During that weekend I am sure George, Glen and Roger were looking down from Heaven and saying,, “ Those young guys still know how to sing and exemplify a real quartet”. The recurring thought for me was that George and Glen were the foundation ofthe group..but never made it just about themselves. They chose young men they felt would “fit” and then they allowed them to grow their talent within a “team” effort. To look on the stage and remember the individuals when they were first“Cathedrals” was gratifying. They had talent. They had drive and were given the opportunity and they earned that trust! The CFR was such a pleasure. Thanks to everyone that made it such a memorable event!

A question you might ask about this weekend might be, “What was your favorite part?” Personally, I’d have to say my favorite moment was when George, Glen and Roger joined us, by way of multi-media. Remembering the lives of George, Glen and Roger and all they shared with us was indeed very special. Roger sang a verse of “I’ve Read The Back Of The Book,” George told stories on Glen, and Glen raised the roof with “We Shall See Jesus”. Even though they weren’t physically with us, I can honestly say their spirits filled the room.
“How ‘bout that little man?!” That’s what George said after my song with them was over, thirty-two years ago. Those words made a profound impact on my life, and I’m forever grateful.
By the way, after the Saturday night concert in Ft. Worth, I stood in line with hundreds of other people to get my own autographed picture of “The Five Guys.” The Cathedral Family Reunion will go down as one of the most special events I’ve ever attended. No, I didn’t have to buy a ticket, or book a flight to get there… but I would have.

I got to catch the 10th christmas jubilee, as they said from stage, on sunday december 8th. It was promoted by IMc concerts in sacramento, which is about 100 miles from my home. but hey, with these three high-powered groups, I convinced myself that it had to be a good concert.
First, let me preface everything I’m about to say with this statement: I’ve never been a “Jubilee” fan. Really!!! Don’t get me wrong. I was one of the two original Greater Vision fans out here in CA that helped convince them and a promoter get Greater Vision to come out to the west coast. Legacy Five has been my wife’s favorite group since they began, and I love their music in addition to being good friends with the band. And I’ve been a huge fan of the Booth Brothers ever since I heard them
sing “This Love is Mine”, and that love for their music hasn’t ever diminished. That said, the Jubilee CDs have never been my cup of tea. The CDs I have and the concerts I saw were good, but for me were just not up to the level of each group’s individual efforts in the studio or on stage. Yes, I’m a pretty critical guy when it comes to music, but that’s who I am and always will be.
I say all this above to point out that I went into the concert very skeptical of what I would get. I was literally thinking as I found my seat before the concert, “Okay guys, let’s see what you’ve got.”
And the gang “knocked it out of the park”! The Christmas “Magic” really made this concert a special event – one that’s now probably in my Top 10, maybe Top 5 concerts of all time. And I’ve been to A LOT of concerts.
They started out singing altogether with a Carol Medley, and it was followed by some new Christmas music. Hearing this introduction of music really got me in the mood for the rest of the concert, a concert of classic Christmas songs as well as new Christmas songs. Here are some of the highlights of the concert:
Our Twelve Day of Christmas: Gerald introduced this song right by saying that most people can’t stand the song because it’s so long and monotonous. So they re-wrote it! And believe me, this song was the most fun of the night. They really sold the new lyrics, and the accompanying screen graphics made the song really go over (hat tip to Ben Wolfe).
Carol of the Bells: This was performed a’cappella and was THE highlight of the night. If all you do is pay for your ticket, sit down for this song, and then walk out, you got your money’s worth. The arrangement was just amazing, and by the time they hit the end, it was a feeling of euphoria all over the building. Just amazing. It was that moment you go to a concert to see/hear, and I’ll never forget it.
Oh Holy Night: Here’s where I expected Gerald to take it. Instead, they went with the Legacy 5 arrangement of this song (my personal favorite arrangement). It started with Trey Ivey playing on the piano, then Legacy 5 singing the 2nd verse, and then… well I won’t spoil it, but it brought the house down right before intermission. Another “moment”. It’s rare to get two of these in a concert, much less the first half.

Words from our Fans!I was at the concert in Anderson, IN last night and I just wanted say that is was great! This was my first time to see the Jubilee Christmas Tour. You have put together a fantastic program. I have saw all groups multiple times in their own solo dates, but this was my first time to see them together. I liked all the crazy things that were added to the show.... it made it a fun night! I also liked how all the groups were on stage and took turns singing instead of having 20-30 minute set of each group! Merry Christmas!!! – Susan B.
Just to let you know my husband, my sister and I attended the concert in Pasco, WA. We drove one and half hours to get there and it was well worth it. We have not laughed so hard in a long time. These gentlemen are incredible vocalists, ministers and entertainers. God Bless all of you. – Sharon C.

Hi, We were at the Coeur d’Alene, ID Concert and we did invite friends of ours to the event. They as well as us were so thrilled that you made it up there. What a great honor to have such a great concert at this time of year. It “knocked the socks” off all our friends and the humor was priceless. We have been to Sevierville, Cathedrals in Texas, and now the one close to home here in Montana in Idaho. They have all been worth the ticket price and we have already gotten our tickets for the concerts next year. I just want to say a great “big” thank you to ALL of you. You all are real special & a if you know it or not you all are the “real” celebrities in our minds. Again , thank you for including us in your tour. The program was filled with the type of enjoyable variety that makes Southern Gospel unique: amazing and tight harmonies, classic Christmas carols, a’cappella creations deserving of standing ovations, piano solos, heartfelt messages shared with the audience as well as humor that made it hard for me to catch my breath!
This may have been their 10th night of performing but it felt fresh and the guys of Jubilee put their all into the entire night. I know the audience was moved to tears numerous times during the evening, both from the powerful voices singing such meaningful songs as well as from the hilarity amongst the guys on stage.
The strength of 11 men’s voices resounding throughout the audience made me believe that I was getting a little glimpse into heaven: power, beauty, and heavenward hearts praising God for our Savior’s birth. – Kathy C.

White Christmas: This is usually a great song on its own. But it’s also a time when Scott Howard introduces the audience to his Redneck Snowblower. All I can say is that I’ve never laughed that hard in the middle of any Christmas song. And my 6 year old son will probably never stop talking about it. Some people say they’re “gonna make it rain”. Well, Howie can now say he’s “gonna make it snow.”
Celebrating Christmas: Ronnie Booth did his Elvis thing to this old Carmen song, and he did it perfectly. But what really made it great was the “Sweet Inspirations” backing him up. Michael, Rodney, and Howie – enough said.
Finale: This wasn’t one of those bring the house down finales. They took the last cut from the Cathedrals A’Capella Christmas album in the 1980s and sang that as a benediction, if you will. It was beautiful and completely preserved the “Magic” and overall precious feeling of the Christmas concert.
There were other highlights, such as Rodney’s “special instrument”, Michael Booth’s crazy antics as well as his down-to-earth message to the audience, and Gus Gaches and Chris Allman doing incredible on their solo songs. I really liked when Trey did his “Classical Christmas” song, where he takes a Christmas carol and mixes it with a “Sonata”
(you may have seen something similar in a Legacy Five concert). I really enjoyed how the Jubilee gang responded in very comical manner. Gerald and Howie’s back-and-forth was hilarious during and after Trey’s song. I can’t describe it - you just have to see it to appreciate it.
After three hours of incredible music, I could say that my cup was overflowing. The guys didn’t need to come off the stage and spend an hour meeting with the folks after the last song – the folks already loved them by the time we said Amen. But they stuck around anyway talking to countless people, and that’s one of the reasons I love this music so much. You won’t see Demi Lavato or Tim McGraw doing anything like that. I love the “family” feeling of Southern Gospel Music.
Like I said above, this is one of my all-time favorite concerts. If you’re on the fence about checking this event out, stop wrestling with the decision. GO! And if you’re not interested at all and just happen to read this, GO! If you’re fan of Southern Gospel music, Christmas music, or music, GO! Don’t make a mistake of missing this event. Here’s hoping they do it again next year!

At Home for Christmas
We love Christmas because we finally get to slow down and just spend time with family. Normally, we get to see both sides of our family and we enjoy every minute. There is always tons of good food to be had and many stories to share. Or course, reading the Christmas story before opening presents is a treasured moment. This year our son, Greyson, got to tear into presents for the first time. He had a blast! It was a special treat getting to experience this for the first time as parents. Most of you know what I’m talking about. We look forward to 2014 with great enthusiasm and excitement to see what God has in store for our family. Thank you for a fantastic 2013 and we will see you soon.

Our family has many holiday traditions. On Friday before December 25, the annual “Hopper Family” Christmas party is held at mom & dad’s home. It is always a festive event. It’s the one time of year dad’s brothers & sisters along with there spouses get together to share old stories and Christmas memories of growing up on the farm. Mom cooks up a feast of scrumptious delights & we sing the Christmas carols. I’ll always cherish the memories made & time spent with my family. And lucky for me that’s only one of three meals I will get to enjoy at mom’s table at Christmas time.

My wife, Regina, is not a big traveller. If I said, “I’ll take you to Hawaii”...she’d say, “No Thanks”. However, she enjoys going to two places...NQC and Disney World! So, every other year we take our magical journey to Orlando and have a family week at Mickey’s place. Reagan and Riley love it almost as much as Mom and Dad. We always go during my Christmas break. We love how the parks are decorated at this time of the year. Also, Disney cast members will still say, “Merry Christmas”, and we love that!

This Christmas we took our granddaughter to see the new Disney movie Frozen and had a lot of fun. She ate most of Poppa’s popcorn and drank all of my Coke! During my Christmas vacation, my wife and I spend time with close friends and usually make a trip to the West Coast and ride the Pacific Coast Highway, eat good seafood, enjoy the scenery and the warm dry climate. Sometimes we attend a Donnie and Marie Christmas Show at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood or the Manheim Steamroller Christmas Spectacular. At home, I always make my mom’s recipe of chocolate oatmeal cookies from scratch and we go shopping with the kids. This past Christmas was extra special for me because I was able to sing at my home church for their Christmas presentation. It had been many years since I had been able to participate in that way. I enjoyed that so much. I don’t get to be there enough.

Christmas time for me is all about family and being home. With my heavy touring schedule, time with extended family is scarce. This time of year we spend it catchingup with each other’s families and listening to old funny stories we have heard a thousand times. I still laugh even though I know exactly what’s going to happen. It’s great to see my girls response at hearing those old family stories for the first time. Of course Christmas Eve is always set aside for my family and Christmas Day with Michele’s. With all the hustle and bustle of giving gifts, my dad still reads the Christmas story to all of us. It is a tradition I hope never changes and I hope to carry on myself. Our immediate family also tries to volunteer at a local charity event. This year we helped serve food at a local school for the needy. This I believe helps teach my girls that it is better to give than receive. Yes, Christmas and time with family is something I always cherish and always trying to keep in mind that Jesus is the reason for the season.

as 2014 unfolds, we reflect back on some “milestones” in our nation’s history. In january, 1776–during the american revolution, george washington unveiled the grand union Flag, the first national flag in america. In january,1863, the emancipation proclamation by president abraham lincoln freed the slaves in the states rebelling against the union. In january,1935, elvis presley entered our world, via tupelo, Mississippi. and in january, 2000, legacy Five was born! now, before anyone gets too upset, these “similarities” are meant to be entirely satirical in nature. never-the-less, 2014 is significant for legacy Five because it begins their 15th year as a group in southern gospel music.
“As I look back over the events of the past 14 years, it seems so many emotions have been experienced. In the early days I experienced such hope, anticipation and excitement as Roger, Scott Howard and I embarked on a new journey together. Then,as the reality of Roger’s terminal illness became apparent, I experienced the emotions of worry, stress and even fear. I know those aren’t emotions God wants us yielding too, but…you understand. When Roger died, we all experienced the emotions of sorrow and grief. Truthfully, now that I have been thru that particular season, I am enjoying the emotions of gratitude, joy, contentment and satisfaction knowing that God ultimately brings us thru every season of life that we encounter and that He has a plan for us,” says Scott Fowler.
Legacy Five has enjoyed some benchmark recordings over the years. Their debut recording, “Strong in the Strength” introduced the gospel music world to some standards that Legacy Five still sings today like “I Stand Redeemed” and “That’s What Grace is For.”
Legacy Five has also done something only one other group (the Cathedrals) has ever done. They recorded with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in London, England. That CD remains one of the most talked about Legacy Five recordings ever.
Legacy Five’s most current recording, “Great Day” is set for a March release, with Daywind Records. Fowler stated, “I spend a HUGE sum of time trying to find just the right combination of songs to record. We went to the great writers in our field to solicit this material and I probably listened to 150-200 songs before choosing these final 10 selections.”
According to Fowler, before selecting a producer they must decide on their song selection. The song selection will depend on who they select. “For “Great Day” we decided to hire legendary producer, arranger and orchestrator, Lari Goss. It had been four years since we used Lari and the time and the songs were right to use his brilliance again,” says Fowler.
“Great Day” is historic for Legacy Five in three major ways. First, Legacy Five has funded a major portion of the recording through kickstarter. Kickstarter has allowed Legacy Five to creatively involve their fans in the process of making “Great Day” a reality. Details about the kickstarter can be found at www.kickstarter.com.
Secondly, Legacy Five enlisted help from their fans to sing in the Legacy Five choir on a song entitled, “Christ is Still the King.”

What is your favorite gift, you ever received?A 1969 Martin D28 guitar from my wife and father-in-law and a 1961 Gibson Hummingbird guitar from my parents.
Dog or cat?Neither. Growing up I had a dog and when it died it was so tough on me that I never got another one. Melissa loves cats and grew up with one, so I wouldn’t be surprised if I returned home from a road trip sometime to find a kitten in the house.
What do you do to unwind?I enjoy watching football, and I normally get home from the weekend on Monday morning, so Monday Night Football is my favorite way to catch up on the Sunday highlights and unwind while watching the game.
What is your greatest extravagance?Guitars and sound equipment for my studio.
What is your favorite song?Can I have two? “Lamb Of God” by Twila Paris & “He’s Been Faithful” by Carol Cymbala.
What is your greatest regret?Not enjoying every moment of life to it’s fullest. I’m such a perfectionist, and tend to get caught up trying to make things right, that I can miss the joy of the journey.
If you could go anywhere, where would you go?Europe.
What is the first song you ever sang?I can’t remember exactly, but I know one of my first solos was the Gordon Jensen song “It Made News In Heaven.”
What do you consider your greatest achievement?I’m often referred to as a singer/songwriter and I love that because it’s who I am. There’s nothing more gratifying for me than to hear that one of my songs has impacted someone’s life and I’m blessed to not only write and sing my music, but to have other artists take my songs to more places and reach more people than I could ever reach.

As I stepped up to the USS Oosterdam for the first time, the
realization of what I was doing hit me: I was going on my first
cruise! Do you remember your first cruise experience? It’s as
though you are climbing aboard a miniature floating city. This
cruise, however, would prove to be very different from your
typical cruise. Sure, there was excellent food and fantastic
accommodations. There were men and women constantly
available to help you find your way around the ship and make
sure you didn’t get lost. We were also bound for gorgeous
destinations such as Matzalan, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San
Lucas on the coast of the Mexico Riviera.
However, what set this particular cruise apart from the rest
is that it had the best entertainment: pure Southern Gospel.
Each evening and morning we tried our best to get the closest
seats we could for the performance because we didn’t want to
miss a single thing! But the seating was fantastic - everybody
throughout the room was engaged and entertained each day.
There were multiple performances from a variety of groups
including Liberty Quartet, Legacy 5, The Freedom Singers, The
Booth Brothers, TaRanda Greene, The Beene Family, and The
Herb Henry Family. After each performance there was an
opportunity to chat with these down-to-earth men and women
and purchase their music.
The concerts we attended were wonderful. Each one had its
fill of amazing harmonies, humor, and spiritual mentoring that
Southern Gospel is known for. It didn’t matter how big the
group was, you felt as though the groups were performing
and speaking directly to you. The Holy Spirit was constantly
at work bringing forth tears prompted by various emotions:
sorrow, joy, assurance, comfort, and even humor. The audience
was not the only group in tears. Often the performers would
be wiping their eyes and they also were moved by His work
through their music.
There were a variety of enjoyable events offered to the fans
in attendance. We had signed up through Liberty and were
invited to a special reception with the group. They sang for us
and greeted each one of us personally, as Liberty always does.
There was an opportunity to hear other talent, including the
wives of Libery Quartet sing together. We attended morning
devotionals where you could be inspired by men of God with
their words of wisdom. We also enjoyed a special edition of the
Newlywed game which had everybody laughing! There was
much more to keep us constantly entertained.
Throughout the week, we developed relationships with not only
the performers, but with the other Southern Gospel lovers
who were on the cruise with us. We ate our delicious meals
together, went on excursions together, played games in the
evening, or relaxed by the pool with familiar faces. By the end
of the week it was as if we were surrounded by family. It was
difficult to say good-bye to our new friends, but we knew there
was a good chance we would see them at some of our future
favorite events: Great Western Fan Festival in Visalia, CA, the
National Quartet Convention in Kentucky, or maybe even at the
Southwest Gospel Music Festival in Phoenix, AZ.
When I decided to go on this cruise, I felt it would be a once in
a lifetime opportunity. Throughout the week I felt as though
God was lifting me higher and higher, to the mountaintop. He
spoke to me and taught me life-changing lessons while cruising
around Mexico. When I disembarked, I knew this was an event
worth saving for again.
Maybe I’ll see you on the next Gospel Music Celebration Cruise
to Alaska!

every gospel artist…actually every christian, experiences those unplanned and unique encounters with other people that help us realize that god really is interested in what we’re doing. sometimes, those encounters happen in places you wouldn’t expect, and with people you would least expect to interact with.
During one of our recent church concerts, I noticed the pastor sitting on the front row with his wife, while we were singing. The scene wasn’t strange to me, at all. I’m used to the pastor sitting on the front row, but I’m not accustomed to the reactions I was seeing right in front of me, during the songs. A person who was sitting on the front row, right in front of me, was squirming, staring at the floor, and even making “sighing” noises that I could hear from the platform. Of course, I’ve seen young kids, who would rather be playing video games, do this, but I had never seen an adult do it before. Even worse…it was the pastor!
I realize our music isn’t everyone’s “cup of tea,” and everybody has personal preferences, but I had never witnessed such a display of what appeared to be complete boredom, bordering on contempt. By the time the break rolled around, it was obvious we would never be invited back to this church. Thankfully, in thirty-four years of traveling, I’ve learned how to look over people’s heads, and not allow them to distract me, but since it was the pastor, it was really difficult to stay focused on what we were trying to accomplish in the concert.
The concert ended, the pastor dismissed the crowd, and he made a quick exit through a side door. After the crowd had cleared the lobby, I headed to the bus to change clothes, thinking about the concert, and wondering what in the world could have been going on with “that guy on the front row.” The church had been “packed out” for the concert, and we had parked our bus behind a building next to the church, to leave as many parking spaces open as possible. As I was walking toward the building where the bus was parked, I noticed someone walking toward me, and he was calling my name. It was the pastor!
I braced for what I knew would be a sermon on our outdated “style of music, “ my stories, Rodney’s “dumb facial expressions,” the volume, or the length of the concert. What I heard, however, was something I wasn’t expecting. This young Pastor, looked at me and asked…”Can I talk to you for a minute?” “Certainly,” I said. “I’ve got to know something. I need someone to pray for me. I don’t want to be a statistic,” he said. “How do you keep the fire? How do you keep the excitement? How do I keep the passion for my calling, for years and years, when people just sit there and look at me week after week?” I had never heard those questions from a pastor before. Pastors are the ones who are supposed to give us the answers… not ask the questions!
We talked for several minutes, and I gave him my contact information so we could keep in touch. As we ended our conversation, and I walked on to the bus, I wondered how many pastors feel the same way as this young pastor. Once again, God had sent someone along to remind me that there are always hurting people in the pews…and sometimes, even on the platform. He also reminded me that even when it seems people aren’t watching or listening, He is still at work.
God knew exactly what that pastor needed to hear at that concert, and he also knew I needed some encouragement, after that concert. The Holy Spirit is always at work in our lives, and in the lives of other believers around us, and He usually shows up when you least expect it.

there’s an old puritan prayer called “the valley of vision,” which speaks of venturing through the ‘depths’ yet seeing god, in all his glory, in the ‘heights.’ this prayer, although unknown to some, describes the spiritual journey all christians take as they seek to deepen their relationship with christ. within the prayer, the speaker deliberately focuses on god, learning to see his struggles as god’s work being completed within him, his brokenness as his healing, his repentance as his victory, and the darkened depths of the valley as a place of vision--for it is often in the valley where god reveals his glory.
For TaRanda Greene, this ‘valley of vision’ has become her testimony, a promise that God is faithful to those who call on Him, a truth that no matter how life batters, cripples, or snares, God is there to mend, heal, and free those He loves.
Born in Georgia and raised in Florida, TaRanda grew up singing gospel music in church. While in Florida, she studied classical music, entered contests, and performed for an assortment of audiences, building not only stage experience but a notable reputation as well. Then in 1997, after giving up a college scholarship, TaRanda auditioned for the Southern Gospel Music group, The Greenes. When the opportunity to sing with the group fell through, she and her family moved from Florida to Knoxville, TN. Seven days later, she received a phone call from The Greenes, offering her a full-time position with the group.
With no idea what to expect in the coming days, TaRanda soon found herself on the road with the Greenes and, unknown to her at the time, her future husband: Tony. Two years into her Southern Gospel career, TaRanda and Tony started to date and, thirteen months later, at the National Quartet Convention in Kentucky, he proposed to her on stage. They married on February 13, 2001, and two days later were back on the road.
Within a year of their marriage, Tony began experiencing health problems and was diagnosed with a kidney disease. Determined to “pick-up and move forward,” Tony carefully watched his diet and exercised, doing everything within his power to remain healthy as he and TaRanda trusted in the Lord for the final outcome. “People all over the world were praying for him,” TaRanda recalls, “and God sustained him.”
From 2001 through 2008, Tony’s health improved and, although the couple was told early on that they would be unable to have children,
God gave them two beautiful girls: Isabella Faith, born in 2004, and Jocelyn Ruth, in 2008.
Then in August, Tony’s kidney began to fail and he started dialysis while still on the road. “It was the rolling hospital,” TaRanda says, “but he never complained about having to do it.” And with each passing week, the group’s popularity grew and Tony’s condition worsened.
In June of 2009, TaRanda received a phone call while rehearsing “New Jerusalem” at Brooklyn Tabernacle in New York. Tony was in the hospital, his only functioning kidney performing poorly. So in August, TaRanda donated her kidney to him.
For the next year, Tony’s health mustered again, allowing him to run and swim and do all the things he previously couldn’t. Then once again, in July 2010, Tony was hospitalized, this time for a lung disease. For the first time in all of their struggles, fear stepped in. “It was raining every day,” TaRanda says, looking back, “and it felt like I didn’t have a friend in the world.”
In September 2010, Tony passed away.
After losing her husband, TaRanda went very deep into depression. She was eventually labeled clinically depressed and issued several medications. “In that time, I never lost faith in the Lord,” TaRanda shares, “but I didn’t understand why it happened.”
Burdened with the weight of her loss, the responsibility of being a single parent, and the uncertainty of her family’s future, TaRanda turned to God for help. One morning she opened her heart to Him: “God, I know this is not who you want me to be or who you created me to be. But I don’t know what to do.”
In response, God put the song “Great is Thy Faithfulness” on her heart, and TaRanda began to sing.
After that morning, God delivered her from her depression, step-by-step, and she has learned to take every day as it comes. “My mindset is different,” she comments, “Every day is a journey...and I know God is beside me, leading me, and holding me.”
Over the last few years, her testimony has spoken to thousands of men and women throughout the world, reminding them of God’s presence even in brokenness.
TaRanda has also continued her singing career, performing as a frequent guest vocalist at some of the largest churches in America:

the Brooklyn Tabernacle in Brooklyn, New York, First Baptist Atlanta with Dr. Stanley and his Intouch ministries, Shadow Mountain with Dr. Jeremiah, Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, VA, and more.
She has recently finished recording her first album in over four years entitled, “Stronger,” which will be released later this spring. According to TaRanda, the album is brimming with stories - songs of encouragement, praise, and what she called “victory songs.” When asked which song on the album was her personal favorite, TaRanda chose “Where Amazing Happens,” written by Dan Dean. This song explores the moments of fear and uncertainty, where it feels impossible to stand, impossible to see beyond brokenness. “This is the place where miracles happen,” TaRanda recites the lyric. “This is where amazing happens.” She claims the piece is basically her “testimony song,” and she can’t wait to share it, and her new album, with the world.
Joining TaRanda on her upcoming album is an assortment of guest artists, including The Martins, Christ Church Choir, Wess Morgan, Jason Crabb, Sonya Isaacs, Angela Primm, Gayle Mays, and Becki Davis.
Thinking ahead, TaRanda hopes to work on either a Christmas album or a Hymns album in the near future. Since she adores both ideas, she is currently undecided.
“God’s opening doors that are just incredible,” TaRanda says, thinking eagerly of the journey ahead, “and my goal is to walk through every one.”
Through her own experiences, TaRanda hopes to encourage others who struggle with depression or loss. She hopes to remind them through her life that God is not just a Sovereign witness: He is the potter, shaping and reshaping the clay; He is the gardener, pruning and nurturing His vine’s branches; He is the healer, the great physician, and He will restore those He loves. He will bring wholeness and He will bring light, and He will move heaven and earth to accomplish His will and reveal His glory in the valley.
Living proof of God’s faithfulness, TaRanda will continue to praise Him through her music and through her life - living and laughing with her daughters, rejoicing in the newfound strength God has given her and the hope she can now share with the world.
“Life is a roller coaster at times: up and down, up and down,” TaRanda says from experience, “but we can dwell on it or we can pick-up, accept it, and move forward, knowing that God knows the beginning and the end.”
TaRanda’s testimony and the testimonies of thousands of others speak of an eternal beauty, a beauty blossoming with grace.
In Ecclesiastes 3:11-14, Solomon writes, “[God] has made everything beautiful in its time...[and] everything God does will endure forever.”
In the past and present, God has been diligently working in TaRanda’s life, shaping and pruning, comforting and leading. And, needless to say, He has plans for her future, plans that will not only impact her life but the lives of others, plans to take her from where she is and move her forward, plans to make her stronger.

he knew – that man would fall out the garden of grace into a new world of sin and hurt.
He knew – That the rest of our days would be hard; that every effort would be work, blood sweat and tears.
He knew – That long before He created the planets and stars that He would drink the bitter cup of our sin.
He knew, He Knew, HE KNEW yet He did it anyways. In a celestial mystery that is beyond our understanding, the Holy, Triune God wanted a relationship. And in all the knowing, He still created from a heart of love. He created you and me.
He already had the angles. They praised Him and served Him all the time. Perhaps He wanted something different. Could it be that he
wanted a people to worship Him because they were loved into doing it? How do we understand this? I do not know that we ever will.
What I do know is this…
“I am living in the promise, there is Grace for every need.”
I don’t understand gravity and how it all works, but I live in its powerful pull every day. The same is true with God’s love and grace. We benefit and live in His wonderful grace every day.
Our greatest need is not more information, money or technology. If it were, God would have sent a professor, economist, and a scientist. phil cross, a beloved singer, speaker, and composer, has been writing songs for christ since 1983. over his ministry years, he has received numerous honors and awards, including songwriter of the year (sgMa awards in 2002), song of the year (diamond awards in 1999), Favorite songwriter (singing news Fan awards), and much more. one of his most notable compositions is the song, “champion of love,” which won song of the year at the gMa dove awards in 1987 and, through the grace of god, endures not just as a fan favorite, but as a life-changing message to all who eagerly await the second coming of creation’s true champion – jesus christ.
The roots of “Champion of Love” go all the way back to 1986, when Cross saw a TV commercial for a boxing match between Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvelous Marvin Hagler, two undefeated fighters at the time. The commercial captivated Cross as the announcer recited: “There’s a fight to be fought. There’s a war to be raised. The world must know who is the all-time, undisputed, undefeated champion.”
Cross wholeheartedly agreed, but his thoughts were not on the battle between the two men in the commercial; his mind was on the battle between “the keeper of temporary love and the keeper of forever love.”
Inspired, Cross decided to write a song about the Lord from the perspective of an announcer broadcasting Him to the world. So for the next six months, Cross worked diligently to write the lyrics that would one day impact thousands of lives.
Although Cross originally wrote “Champion of Love” as a fast song, his co-writer, Caroline Presson, experimented with the music as a “slow, big moving ballad.” Inspired by the chord progressions in Chicago’s “You’re the Inspiration,” Presson created her own chord progressions and adapted them to the intro of “Champion.”
“She took the music to a bigger place,” Cross remarks. “[Champion] became a gospel anthem due to her leadership musically.”
Once the music and lyric were completed, renowned Christian recording artist, Michael English sang the demo, which was later heard by Lari Goss and then Gerald Wolfe of the Cathedral Quartet.
According to Cross, “Champion” has spoken encouragement into the hearts of listeners across the United States, some hearing the message of Christ for the very first time. “I’ve heard everything you can possibly imagine about the encouragement people have gained from the song,” Cross comments, looking back over the last twenty-eight years. He then adds: “The song just keeps on living.”
When asked about his current projects, Cross said he was focusing most of his time and energy on writing and publishing, preferring the “creative mode” over the “concert world” as he continues to use his God-given talents to glorify Christ. “If I write one song, it’s more effective than a year’s worth of concerts,” Cross says. “It’s more effective with the time that I have now.”
Besides his usual song writing, Cross is also penning a “one of a kind devotional,” which uses musical terms (e.g. tempo, harmony, refrain, etc.) to portray the Christian’s “faith-walk.” Cross describes it as “a book worship teams and choirs can use in a small group Bible study” since the musical terms are something familiar to them.
Cross hopes to see the book released later this year.
Even though he has no plans to perform in the near future, Cross has dedicated his time and efforts to a worthwhile pursuit: writing praises to God in song and prose - proclaiming the glorious coming of “a Champion robed in white.”

I learned a lot about life growing up on a farm. one day as we were driving to church a family of skunks crossed the road in front of us. My dad slammed on the brakes and shouted. “grab one of the little ones ken.” I usually obeyed my dad without question but I remember looking at him like he had lost his mind.
He pushed me toward the skunks. “If you get his back legs off the ground he can’t squirt you. Grab one hurry!” I grabbed the smallest critter by the tail and held him at face level. He turned his head to look at me. I’m sure skunks call this “taking aim.” Then he let me have it.
I don’t remember dropping the skunk but I do remember trying to breathe. My mom made me take a bath in tomato juice. Then we proceeded to church. Nothing short of death could keep our family from church.
Here are the things I learned that day:Don’t pick up skunks.No matter how fast you drop a skunk, it won’t be fast enough.Bathing in tomato juice does not remove skunk smell from a child. However it does ruin a lot of tomato juice.If you go to church after being sprayed by a skunk you will have a “phew” to yourself, if you get my drift.Dad’s don’t know everything.

grasping the handle, Mark trammell swung open the door to crossroads studios in arden, north carolina and walked inside, gerald wolfe following close behind. after forty years of recording southern gospel Music, this day was always his favorite – tracking the orchestration. “some would actually be surprised to know that I truly despise the beginning process,” Mark shares, “picking songs is actually tedious work for me. tracking is when my fun starts and orchestration day is my favorite part.” In late october, Mark trammell and one of his two co-producers, gerald wolfe, made a visit to crossroads studios to do just that – lay the tracks for what is now the Mark trammell Quartet’s new project, Your Walk Talks.
“Most people know that I like songs with heart,” expresses Mark, “This CD will be more of that same good material from MTQ.” The heart of the song is what touches lives, whether it’s in one of our concerts, through a radio station playing our single or a CD in the stereo at home. With each new recording, we seek to bring songs like that to our audience. There’s no better example of this than the tune penned by Rodney Griffin and Nick Trammell, To Know He Knows Me. “First of all it was an honor for Rodney Griffin to take the time to write this song with me,” says Nick. “He has been a huge encouragement to me and I am excited at how the song turned out. The message I wanted it to convey is God’s unconditional love for us. He knows every bad thing there is to know about each of us and loves us anyway. It’s a simple, yet profound message in a somewhat wordy, catchy tune. I pray it is an encouragement.” The songs recorded on Your Walk Talks include a wide variety of Gospel Music’s favorite writers. From MTQ’s very own Nick Trammell, to Rodney Griffin, Babbie Mason, Dianne Wilkinson, Rebecca J. Peck, Scott Inman and Bill and Gloria Gaither, you can’t go wrong with lyrics from these writers! When the orchestration was finished, MTQ headed to Nashville for the
next phase of the recording process – recording the vocals. “Vocal recording is when my fun usually takes a vacation,” Mark teases. In addition, Dustin Black, who is new to the recording experience comments, “With this being my first time in the studio, I was, needless to say, a little nervous. But Mark and the guys were very encouraging and very helpful. They have all been there before and I enjoyed learning from each of the guys how to do it the right way.” “The mix is when I really see the ‘fruit of the labor’ come alive,” Mark continues, “As the boys say, ‘Mark thinks it’s all junk until the mix is over and THEN he usually smiles and thanks God for the end result.’” On the other hand, when it’s time to bring these songs to the stage, Pat Barker says he is looking forward to singing Thanks To Calvary in their concerts. “It’s my story,” says Pat, “Without Calvary, all we can hope to do is ‘turn over a new leaf.’ Calvary allows us the chance to have a change that is permanent. True hope for life abundant comes from Calvary. It changed not only my future, but completely erased my past. Everything good is thanks to Calvary. I can’t wait to let that message touch those who hear it.” Dustin adds that his favorite song from the new project is God’s Been Faithful. “It talks about how God is faithful to us through the years, in whatever circumstance or trial we may find ourselves in. the beginning of psalm 98:1 reads, “sing to the lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things.” this verse, along with numerous others, emphasizes the role of worship in a believer’s life. to sing praises to the lord of all creation is both a blessing and a spiritual need, an invitation to strengthen a believer’s relationship with god and an opportunity to minister to others.
For nearly twelve years, triumphant Quartet has been worshiping the lord through song. starting in 2008, triumphant decided to hit the road full-time, taking their music ministry all across america. In a recent interview with eric bennett, triumphant’s award-winning bass singer, he provided fans with a small insight into his home-life and some advice for building a strong family.
What three things do you miss the most about home while you’re on the road?My wife, my wife, my wife. My kids are gone. They live in the Charlotte area. So, really, she’s the reason I can’t wait to get to the house. Also, I really enjoy getting to my home church.
After a busy schedule filled with traveling and concerts, what activities help you unwind?A consistent workout schedule. I do Crossfit and it’s very relaxing. Also, hanging out with my wife. She’s my best friend.
Are there any special activities you do with your wife while you’re home?She has Mondays off, so we’ll spend the day together. Most of the time, our activities consist of going to Charlotte to see our kids and grand-baby. She’s the apple of our eye.

What is your secret for balancing career, family, and spiritual life?I’ve come to realize that to make the most of my career and family life, my spiritual life has to be intact. It has to be not just something we talk about but something we actually experience. I can be close to the Lord at home or on the bus or doing a concert. I try my best to stay in prayer. I read and study scripture and try to stay focused on Him. And when I do that the balance between my family and career stays in check. The closer I am to the Lord, the better my relationship is with my wife. The closer I am to the Lord, the better my relationship is with the guys on the bus. The closer I am to the Lord, the better I am to minister from the stage. The closer I am to the Lord, the better my relationship is with my kids. Everything hinges from the vertical relationship. If you get it in place, then everything horizontal works out.
Do you have any interests or hobbies? I run and workout. I like to play basketball. Other than that, I don’t have a lot of what I consider hobbies. When I get free time to watch TV, I love westerns. You can take the boy out of the country, but it’s hard to take the country out of the boy. I like to watch Bonanza and Gunsmoke. I also love sports, and Alabama football.
Has anything in your career ever caused a major problem in your family? If so, how did your family overcome it?God has really blessed me. I don’t have anything I can think of. For the first eleven years of my career, I was at Dollywood where I only traveled two or three months a year. The first five years of where I am now was the same way. I’d get up, go to the theater, and go home. So the last six years have been quite an adjustment, being gone three or four days a week as opposed to being home every night. I’m still not crazy about the road. But I really feel like I’m doing what I need to be doing. I feel like I’m where God wants me right now.
What does a typical day-off look like for you?If we’re at home, we sleep late. We spend the day out, running around, going everywhere. One of our favorite restaurants is P.F. Changs, so we go there to eat as often as possible. We don’t go to a lot of movies. It’s mainly face-time, talking, hanging out with each other. When we’re together it’s quality time, so anything we can do together works.
Is there any advice you would like to give to strengthen other families?First thing I would suggest is set aside Bible study time as a family. We did that when my kids were younger. We made it fun. We would bake cookies, make coffee milkshakes. We would sit down and they could ask any sort of question they wanted to: Where do dinosaurs come from? Any kind of question and we’d study it.
When we’d take them to school, we would learn Bible verses. Once the Word is down in your heart it never goes away. I would definitely consider that to be one reason why my kids turned out to be the kids that they are. The more the family prays together, the more they stay together. It’s just the bottom line. We still, when we get together, will have a Bible study. I love being able to have that closeness with them and studying the scriptures at home. I think that’s the key to having a successful family, learning how to become unselfish and putting your wife and family first. And I think, as a man, God’s Word tells me to love my wife as Christ loved the Church. So that means my love for her has to be consistent, just like His love for us. I think that’s part of my leadership role in my family: loving my wife and my kids.
I’ve learned many things over my short forty-eight years. Looking back over it, spending time together was the most important thing we did.

Fresh from his GMA Dove Award-winning debut solo recording, Doug Anderson kept the momentum going with a concert kicking off his sophomore project on StowTown Records; the event was attended by an enthusiastic hometown Hoosier crowd, faithful fans, and music industry friends from Nashville. releasing children from poverty in jesus’ name...that is the compassion International goal, and that is the very reason why I have been an artist representing them for several years now.
I have been on different mission trips over the years, and every trip is so unique and touches my heart in indelible ways. Let me tell you about a Compassion Mission trip I took to Bogota,Colombia. Along with the Compassion team and fellow gospel artists, we visited three different churches and went to the homes of a few of the children. As with all mission trips and, for that matter, anytime you minister for the Lord, you always receive more than you can ever give. Such was the case with these beautiful children we visited in South America. When we arrived at each church, there was a big celebration to greet everyone. The smiles were infectious, the joy was unspeakable, and the laughter was spontaneous! My ability to speak Spanish is worse than terrible. In the United States, I can barely order chips and salsa. In fact, my Spanish is so limited that my daughter, Gabrielle, suggested that I watch some episodes of ‘Dora the Explorer’ before going on this trip. However, when we arrived at the churches, there was no language barrier at all. Their love, music, and fellowship transcended words. So many of the children had already made a commitment to Christ, and it was evident on their faces. The scriptures they quoted and the songs they sang were heartfelt and deeply moved us. The photographer for the trip, Paul Wharton of Nashville, TN, made a statement that stuck with me. He said that he had traveled to many places in the world and had seen poverty, but what he saw in these children’s eyes was not that of hopelessness, but of hope.
One day, after lunch at one of the churches, we went on a home visit to see a young child that was enrolled in the Compassion program at that church. Although the family was living in poverty, I was surprised to see that their children had painted a beautiful mural of Disney characters on one wall. They had done such a great job that I wondered if an adult had been the artist. The stark contrast of these
rich colors in the midst of overwhelming poverty was compelling, yet I could feel the love in their home. That love made them wealthy indeed. As we left that home, I thought about the fact that Mary Alice and my girls were going to pick me up at the airport, and we were going straight to Disney World for Gabrielle’s birthday. We would be seeing all of those hand painted characters in person.
A couple of days later we were standing at Cinderella’s castle listening to Mickey Mouse and the gang chant “Dreams Come True.” As my girls had their picture taken with Snow White, I thought of that family in Bogota and their painting. I didn’t, however, have a feeling of hopelessness, but of hope. Those children in Bogota know Christ, and as a part of the Compassion church program, they will now have an education. Those children will not only learn work skills, but also will have an opportunity to go to college.
Storybook heroes about castles and princesses have inspired children around the world. All children love to dream, but the reality of the King of Kings and His Kingdom is the story that must be told, so let me not only thank you kind people that sponsor a child or contribute to missions, but let me also thank you pastors, Sunday School teachers, and choir directors. Thank you deacons, cooks, coaches, and church bus drivers. Thanks to you all who work in any capacity to spread the Gospel Story to the world and who reach out to others with the arms of Jesus. Dreams do come true because of Christ’s love for mankind and selfless workers like you!

as the year 2014 sets in, many americans wonder what new and exciting experiences will greet them in the coming months. some daydream about where they might be come august or september:
Maybe they’ll attend a Broadway show or go white water rafting, visit Mount Rushmore or hike the Appalachian Trail. Maybe they’ll find themselves foot-tapping to the Penny Loafers at the Pennsylvania Gospel Music Festival in downtown Hershey. Wait – what? That’s right. This coming September the first annual Pennsylvania Gospel Music Festival will take place at the Hershey Theatre in downtown Hershey.
Now, some might think - why Hershey, PA? Well, why not? Hershey is brimming with opportunities to explore local history and enjoy long days of family-fun under a blue Pennsylvania sky. Add a little gospel music and it’s basically a package deal!
So what history does Hershey, PA, offer? The history of a man with a vision, the town he built, and his “Great Building Campaign.” The Man With A Vision Milton S. Hershey was born in 1857 in Derry Township, Pennsylvania. At the age of fourteen, he was apprenticed under a local printer. But when Hershey’s dislike for the printing work became evident, his mother arranged another apprenticeship, this time with Joseph Royer, a Lancaster County confectioner. Under Royer, Hershey learned the art of candy-making, his natural talent for the work blossoming with each passing year. At the age of eighteen, after his first two attempts at starting his own candy-business failed, Hershey returned to Lancaster, where he successfully started his own caramel company. While attending the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Hershey was enraptured with a set of German chocolate-making equipment and purchased the entire assembly, convinced that chocolate-making was his future. In 1900 Hershey sold his Lancaster Caramel Company and returned to Derry Township, where he would one day build the largest chocolate factory in the world.
The Town He Built A great philanthropist of the early 1900s, Milton S. Hershey was convinced that happy workers were better workers. His “Great Building Campaign” During the long, barren years of the Great Depression, Hershey set out on a crusade to build some of the most magnificent structures in Pennsylvania, providing over 600 local workers with jobs.
