The list of events in which Country Classic competed reads like a World Show schedule: halter, showmanship, cutting, working cow horse, barrel racing, pole bending, stake race, reining, western riding, trail, west-ern horsemanship, western pleasure, hunter under saddle, hunt seat equitation, heading, heeling and breakaway roping. Foaled in 1969, Country Classic was by Rey Jay and out of Christy Carol. His breeder, Marion Flynt, sold the sorrel gelding to Linda Marie Mills in 1973, and, in 1975, he was sold again to Stacey Allen Strain. “Country could run a barrel pattern first, then go into an English equitation class,” Stacey once said. “If I said ‘whoa’ in a reining pattern, he slid to a stop, but when I said ‘whoa’ to him in barrels, he knew to slow down and take the barrel.” The gelding’s list of achievements included a reserve world championship in stake race, 15 Youth World top-10 placings in nine dif-ferent events, 98 all-around titles, six open and youth Superiors, 25 grands and 20 reserves, two youth working cow horse high-point titles and an open working cow horse high-point title. Country Classic filled Stacey’s trophy room with more than 600 trophies in addition to numerous all-around awards and saddles. Jonathan Strain showed Country Classic to 10 youth points. Then, his sister Stacey went on to earn a Youth Supreme with him and collected 495 youth points. Her younger brother, Randy, showed the gelding to another Youth Supreme title and earned a total of 463 youth points. Inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2001, Country Classic illustrates why the American Quarter Horse is the world’s most versatile horse. We Are All ONE With worries about the stock market, housing foreclosures and the global economy, many ex-press concern that these factors must be taking a toll on the world of charitable giving and, in turn, on the activities of the Foundation. However, studies show that changes in philanthropy are not directly correlated to changes in the stock market. Total philanthropy appears to weather storms in the stock market with great resiliency and less dramatic fluctuation. In spite of war, terrorism, and political and eco-nomic crisis, philanthropy continues to grow from year to year. In fact, we are very blessed to have doubled the number of gifts we received in 2008 over the previous year. Total giving increased as well. What we are most pleased with is the new number of donors that are responding passionately in support of our work. The Foundation’s family – those loyally devoted to the horses and to the people their gifts serve - grows each day. For that, we are truly grateful. The vast majority of donors (who make up nearly $300 billion in total giving in the United States each year) come from households who have annual incomes of less than $100,000. If you have been waiting to make a gift, perhaps concerned it might not be big enough, please don’t hesitate any longer. Remember, each gift – of any size – is valued. As ONE we all make a real and lasting difference.

MERLE WOOD HUMANITARIAN RECIPIENT NAMED

WORLD’S MOST VERSATILE

-Country Classic

Vision, leadership, integrity and caring are just some of the strengths the 2008 Merle Wood Humanitarian Award recipient, retired Colonel Earl A. Lilley of Emmett, Idaho, exercises with every task. Promoting American Quarter Horses, no matter what the audience or venue, is a passion he holds dear. “Just watching him inspires me to move forward and accomplish the impossible,” said Clayton Russell, vice president of racing for IQHA. “Every individual who has been a part of growing the industry has been mentored by Earl.” Lilley’s vision for “fairness to all” is quite evident in his work with the Idaho Quarter Horse Association, Idaho Horse Council, Idaho Horse Board and, of course, AQHA. This priority for making all projects and programs inclusive and impartial signifies the quality leadership skills Earl exhibits. Colonel Lilley has held various offices, including IQHA President and IQHA Vice President Racing, Idaho Horse Council President and has been appointed five times by various governors to the Idaho Horse Board. He also currently serves as an AQHA Director Emeritus and sits on the racing council. His leadership in the racing industry has inspired many throughout the years, creating a legacy of commitment to the breed. In addition to countless military service honors, Lilley has received the Idaho Horse Council’s Legacy Award, Emmett Kiwanis Club Certificate of Awards and was the first inductee into the Idaho Quarter Horse Association’s Hall of Fame. In 1984, Lilley and his late wife, Lola, received Idaho’s Horse Person of the Year honors. When you see Colonel Lilley at Les Bois Park giving a presentation for Youth Day at the Races during the Regional Experience, volunteering for the College of Southern Idaho and Wasatch Academy equine science programs or selling Filly of the Year raffle tickets during the Idaho State Fair, you know his generous work not only supports the mem-bers of Idaho but all AQHA members. Join us at the AQHA Convention on Sunday, March 8, 2009, in San Antonio, Texas, to present Colonel Lilley with the Merle Wood Humanitarian Award.

The Two Bits for Your Brain Youth Art Show is on display at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame through January 30, 2009. The show is comprised of entries from junior high and high school students in the area. This year’s theme, “The Mane Event,” asked the participants to learn about American Quarter Horse events and depict the breed in the competitive environ-ments. There are 54 pieces in the show and entries range from all over the Texas panhandle. The Youth Art Show is an annual event that focuses the attention of area art students toward the American Quarter Horse and enhances their skills as artists. The show is an extension of the Two Bits for Your Brain Education Program at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum which is graciously supported by funding assistance from Amarillo National Bank.

THERAPEUTIC RIDING AND CEREBRAL PALSY

A committed staff and an American Quar-ter Horse give this cerebral palsy patient the opportunity to work together to develop her skills to sit independently and acquire trunk control. Her ultimate goal is to walk inde-pendently, but, for now, she focuses on bal-ance, muscle relaxation, muscle toning and joint mobility. Lacking the ability to sit independently, cerebral palsy patients require a great deal of assistance. In a therapeutic riding session, one person leads the horse, while two side walkers serve as “live” seat belts, providing the support necessary for the rider to sit while the horse is moving. The padded de-vice shown in this picture serves to stablilize the rider and allow her to sit with her legs down on either side of the horse or push against it to push up on her knees, thus en-hancing her trunk control.

Many of us have experienced the anguish of realizing we can no longer keep and care for special animals in our lives. This is an especially big concern with horses because they are more expensive to keep and care for. Earl Meadows and his wife, Ruth, made some difficult, yet beneficial, decisions six years ago when they donated three American Quarter Horses to the Windridge Therapeutic Riding Center in Longview, Texas. A special moment between Golden Poco Mac and Earl - just before Mr. Meadows passed away in May - was captured here when Windridge took time to honor this generous and caring horse owner. A Pearl Harbor survivor and veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, Mr. Meadows proudly served his country and worked for Mobil Oil for more than 30 years. An avid member of AQHA, Earl began his relationship with American Quarter Horses in 1986 and thoroughly enjoyed service in the Sheriff’s Mounted Unit, along with pleasure riding and showing. Ruth founded Safe Haven, an organization that rescued abused and aged horses. Together, they shared very strong feelings about providing nothing but the best care for any animal. The couple worked tirelessly to ensure that good care, schooling and a safe environment were provided through Safe Haven. Margo Dewkett of Windridge Therapeutic Equestrian Center was thrilled to learn of the Meadows’ intention to donate their horses six years ago. “Each horse is a priceless gift to the center. The best feeling imaginable is to be able to use an animal that we love to benefit a child or an adult with a disability.” Golden Poco Mac or “Mac,” now 18 years old, is a perfect match for Windridge’s program, according to Dewkett. “The value of quality conformation is valuable to a therapeutic riding center. For this reason, the horse’s movement manipulates a rider’s body to the finest degree as if they are walking. In turn, a horse with quality conformation and movement influences a body with a disability. For instance, a child with cerebral palsy whose body knows only the movement of a wheelchair or being carried by a parent has not been internally influenced. The horse’s gait influences the child’s body from the inside out: their balance and equilibrium improves correctly, spastic muscles relax or flaccid muscles tone correctly, joint range of motion takes place, the circulatory and nervous systems activate normally just as if the child began walking. “A horse need not be worth thousands of dollars or have won many competitions. We look at disposition, soundness and conformation in determining whether a horse is a good fit for our program at Windridge,” explains Dewkett. After donating a horse to a therapeutic riding center, many owners continue a relationship with their animals. Ruth explained that Earl’s favorite thing to do was to go to the barn and feed his horses carrots. After donating Mac, Earl would show up at Windridge monthly with 50 lbs. of carrots—enough for the entire herd. He would say, “How could I give a carrot to Mac and not all of them?” “He loved his horses tremendously,” explained Ruth. “The opportunity to tell the story of him and his horses is the best gift anyone could have given him. It is how he would have wanted to be remembered.”

Memorial gifts honor the memory of a person or horse who touched your life in a special way. Often, families ask for memorials in funeral notices as a way of honoring loved ones. Many people make annual memorial contributions to remember the birthday or anniversary of a loved one. Your gift will be acknowledged with a lovely card that will be sent to family members and others.

Honorariums provide donors a way to express their appreciation or love and respect for a living family member, friend, coworker or special person or horse. Such a contribution is a thoughtful way to acknowledge a significant win at a show or race or to remember someone's birthday or anniversary. The person or horse owner honored by your contribution will receive a card announcing your gift.

When making your gift, please indicate the name of the person or horse you wish to honor and provide a mailing address as appropriate in a short note or in the memo portion of a check addressed to AQHF. We will be honored to send a notification of your generous remembrance to the individual or individuals memorialized or honored. Your gift amount is not disclosed. You may also make a secure online gift to AQHF or one if its programs of your choice in honor or memory of someone.

Obituary designations AQHF can help you include memorial gift information in obituaries. Contact us for more information. Sample sentences include: The family requests that memorial gifts be forwarded to the American Quarter Horse Foundation 2601 I-40 East, Amarillo, TX 79104. The family requests that memorial gifts be made to the (choose one) [Scholarship/Equine Research/America’s Horse Cares/Hall of Fame &

Museum] fund for the American Quarter Horse Foundation 2601 I-40 East, Amarillo, TX 79104.

Memorial and honorarium giving can be made to a specific fund or as a general contribution. For information on how you can make your memorial and honorarium giving through the year qualify for the Annual Fund Leadership Society, contact Chris Sitz [email protected] or call (806)378-5032.
