1 Status of English

Most popular language worldwide in various fields and enjoys first rank in advanced countries like USA, UK, Australia and Canada The second language in many common wealth countries and has Major official status in India and Connects our nation to the international community Introduced to India by British in 19th century and the demand for the use of English grew rapidly Included in the school syllabi in several states of our country which links people of different parts of our country together and offers innumerable job opportunities 2 Status of English Learning Student English provides wide opportunities personally and professionally. 3 Importance of (LSRW) Skills LSRW is the acronym for Listening (L), Speaking (S), Reading (R) and Writing (W) and these skills play a central role in language learning Development of LSRW skills makes one a competent and efficient communicator

3.1 Listening Skill Listening acquaints one with the phonic, phonetic and phonological qualities of the language

Attentive listening is required to understand the sounds of the language, audio-visual clips of English trains a non-native speaker of English and this skill acquaints the learner with syllable distribution, stress etc

3.2 Speaking Skill The learner of the language can start speaking by following International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) symbols Speaking improves pronunciation at higher level which can be of professional conversation, public speaking etc

3.3 Reading Skill This skill requires literacy. The earner understand that there are differences between written and spoken forms Reading is an intense mental activity when performed silently by which one can absorb the language syntactical structures and his/her vocabulary enhances When reading is done aloud the sounds are imitated as that of native speaker Improves pronunciation and correct use of grammar

Page 71: Gopalan College of Engineering and Management · NAAC - SELF STUDY REPORT (SSR) Criterion 5 LEARNER SUPPORT AND PROGRESSION Key Indicator (KI) 5.1 Learner Support QnM - Metric No

3.4 Writing Skill This skill also requires literacy like reading skill. Writing exhibits and command over vocabulary, different formats and styles. This skill is a Vital part of Public speaking and writing includes email, circular minutes of the meeting, report generation etc Integration of LSRW skills enhances the pace of learning of a language and these skills can be practised through content and tasks based instructions By the guidance offered through the software one can surely become efficient learner

4 The Concept and Usefulness of English Language Laboratories The English Language Laboratory is an audio visual creation to impart LSRW skills

and can be used for teaching/learning teachers' console and software

The Language Labs offers broadcasting, internet materials learning software etc for

practicing and developing the LSRW skills through interactive lessons

The labs facilitates student to listen pronunciation, repeat and record it, listen to

their performance, compare with the model and perform self assessment

The lab provides freedom to learner to learn at their own pace and offers privacy to

speak and listen and also helps to assess the student’s pronunciation, accent and

expression

Language Labs offers focused learning/teaching since more intensive learning in less

time as compared to theory classes and these English Laboratories have become the

need of the hour in the learning process for effective communication

English Labs is divided into two categories, namely

Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) Lab and Interactive Communication

Skills (ICS) Lab

Page 72: Gopalan College of Engineering and Management · NAAC - SELF STUDY REPORT (SSR) Criterion 5 LEARNER SUPPORT AND PROGRESSION Key Indicator (KI) 5.1 Learner Support QnM - Metric No

5 Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) Laboratory

This methodology started in 1960s and earlier this method was known as Computer

Assisted Language Instruction (CALI). In 1980s CALL replaced the term CALI

Three major approaches of CALL are the behaviouristic, the communicative and the

integrative.

The behaviouristic approach was conceived in 1950s and implemented in 1960s.

This was in the form of stimulus response pattern and the analysis of learner’s

response.

The communicative approach laid stress on the learner rather than mere analysis.

The integrative approach using multimedia platform is highly interactive and easy to

use.

The programmes used in CALL are instructor intervention but the autonomous

software do not require an instructor

5.1 Aims and Objectives of CALL Lab

Enhancement of the LSRW skills

Teaching correct pronunciation

Acquaintance with simple and idiomatic expression of the language

Comprehension of different accents

Growth in oratorical proficiency

Competence in the use of computers

Page 73: Gopalan College of Engineering and Management · NAAC - SELF STUDY REPORT (SSR) Criterion 5 LEARNER SUPPORT AND PROGRESSION Key Indicator (KI) 5.1 Learner Support QnM - Metric No

6 Interactive Communication Skills (ICS) Laboratory

The ICS lab is very useful in inculcating soft skills for interpersonal communication

Earlier it involved holding extracurricular activities but it has become highly formal

exercise in a controlled environment

The earliest ICS labs were the auditoria where the learner could practice under

experts

Now it has become imperative to practice in a systematic manner through intensive

and extensive exposure to language etiquettes

6.1 Aims and Objectives of ICS Laboratory

Enhancement of language skills of the learner

Imparting fluency in speaking

Increasing the ability in recognizing idiomatic usages of language

Improving communication skills in a comprehensive manner

Develope perception capabilities to understand native speakers of

English

Augmentation of public speaking virtues

Enlargement of conversational proficiency

Proficiency in use of modern gadgets such as telephone, mikes, etc.

7 Advantages of CALL and ICS Laboratory Sessions

Provides greater freedom to learners in their pace and difficulty levels.

Intensity of learning is greater since software is interactive

Offers facility to repeat audio clip till getting familiar with the accent

Through the of available Internet more information can be drawn

Performance can be evaluated in a realistic and conducive manner

Familiarise the student with the equipments and situations and motivates

Develops practical dexterity, analytical skills, problem solving abilities and

communication capabilities
