The purification is necessary because, as Scripture teaches, nothing unclean will enter the presence of God in heaven (Rev. 21:27) and, while we may die with our mortal sins for- given, there can still be many impurities in us, specifically venial sins and the temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven. At the end of time, when Jesus returns, there will come the general judgment to which the Bible refers, for example, in Matthew 25:31-32: "When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats." In this general judg- ment all our sins will be publicly revealed (Luke 12:25). Augustine said, in The City of God, that "temporary punishments are suffered by some in this life only, by others after death, by others both now and then; but all of them before that last and strictest judgment" (21:13). It is between the particular and general judg- ments, then, that the soul is purified of the remaining consequences of sin: "I tell you, you will never get out till you have paid the very last copper" (Luke 12:59). By Fr. Bob Schreiner - Purgatory: Part I of IV

I would like to take the occasion of my November CREDO articles to review some basic

doctrine and teachings about PURGATORY. This belief of the Church is part of the

essential doctrines of the Catholic faith and may not be ‘omitted’ lest misunderstanding

be brought to other connected and necessary doctrines of the faith.

The doctrine of Purgatory was an accepted part of the belief of the Church and went

without objection from the Apostolic times until the Protestant Reformation of Martin

Luther. Then, when rightly objecting to corrupt practices of clergy in the day of selling

indulgences, Luther also changed the doctrine associated with it. Mind you: the doctrine

was not corrupt. Clergy were corrupt in its usage and interpretation. But alas – the Ref-

ormation proceeded with doctrinal changes anyway. One of these changes being the

doctrine of Purgatory. Thus, Catholic Christians believe in the doctrine of Purgatory

which predates the Reformation; and Protestant Christians do not believe in it since the

Reformation on.

WHAT IT IS and THE TWO JUDGEMENTS (what follows is taken from

www.catholic.com/tract/purgatory): “ The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines

purgatory as a "purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of

heaven," which is experienced by those "who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still

imperfectly purified" (CCC 1030). It notes that "this final purification of the elect . . . is

entirely different from the punishment of the damned" (CCC 1031).

The purification is necessary because, as Scripture teaches, nothing unclean will enter the

presence of God in heaven (Rev. 21:27) and, while we may die with our mortal sins for-

given, there can still be many impurities in us, specifically venial sins and the temporal

punishment due to sins already forgiven.

When we die, we undergo what is called the particular, or individual, judgment. Scrip-

ture says that "it is appointed for men to die once, and after that comes judgment" (Heb.

9:27). We are judged instantly and receive our reward, for good or ill. We know at once

what our final destiny will be. At the end of time, when Jesus returns, there will come the

general judgment to which the Bible refers, for example, in Matthew 25:31-32: "When

the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his

glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them

one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats." In this general judg-

ment all our sins will be publicly revealed (Luke 12:2–5).

Augustine said, in The City of God, that "temporary punishments are suffered by some in

this life only, by others after death, by others both now and then; but all of them before

that last and strictest judgment" (21:13). It is between the particular and general judg-

ments, then, that the soul is purified of the remaining consequences of sin: "I tell you,

you will never get out till you have paid the very last copper" (Luke 12:59). “

Life and Dignity Sunday, October 28-29 This Sunday is Life and Dignity Sunday in the Diocese of Crookston. It is a day that Bishop Hoepp-ner has provided for parishes to discuss our Catholic responsibility of being engaged citizens who are forces of good in our communities. You are invited and have the opportunity to register for the state-wide Minnesota Catholic Conference (MCC) Catholic Advocacy Network, which is a faithful, compassionate, moral voice for life, dignity, and justice in our state. You will have an opportunity to register this week-end, thank you! We encourage you to take advan-tage of the many advocacy resources and Catholic Social Teaching tools that the network provides, and we hope that you will be diligent in responding to the occasional e-mails that the network will send asking you to help us “take action” on an important social or public issue.

“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.” - MATTHEW 22:37 Do you put other “gods” before God? Is your love of money, power, status or some personal possession greater than your love for God? Do you really recognize that everything you have and everything you are is a gift from God? The good news – it’s not too late to put God first in your life in all things.
