Welcome to the Bolton, Wigan & Leigh Golden Years Roadshow. We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our exhibitors and visitors at

the event. A special ‘thank you’ is reserved for our sponsors Costco Wholesale who have worked very hard behind the scenes to help make the day fun, entertaining and hopefully a big success. Above all we have tried to make the event ‘local and community based’, while still being fun and informative.

To the exhibitors ‘thank you’ for coming along to the event and been prepared to try something new which is growing and developing. Should you have any opinions or new ideas to help improve the road shows, please feel free to email us at [email protected] with your comments. Equally should you wish to be involved with future events also drop us a line at the same email address. The team would love to speak to you.

To the visitors, a great big ‘thank you’ as without you this

would all be pointless. We hope that you will be able to take something away from today’s event whether it is a new found love for ‘Zumba’, or even a better understanding of what you need to do to improve your finances.

Some of you may even be going home with prizes? Be sure to try the treasure hunt, the quiz zone, and the balloon race! All are offering free prizes and a bit of fun on both floors of the exhibition.

We would also like to say a ‘thank you’ to all the exhibitors who have tried to raise much needed funds for the charities at the exhibition. They have been the inspiration for this event, and we do hope that the event has managed to raise a nice amount of funds for them.

Please make sure you spin the roulette wheel before you go home as all proceeds are going to League of Welldoers and Woodlands Hospice.

And a final ‘thank you’ to the management who have worked tirelessly to make this event the success we hope it will be.

RELATIONSHIPS IN RETIREMENT

8 GOLDEN YEARS ROADSHOW • APRIL 2013

PrePare for success Take time BEFORE you retire to evaluate your relationship and how you intend to make the most of it when you have more time together. Talk about what you imagine your life will be like and to discuss the places where your fantasies don’t match. Make a plan which both of you are happy with — where will you holiday? Will you move house? What hobbies will you enjoy together and apart?

Manage your exPectationsBe aware that retirement won’t be perfect every step of the way. Spending all this time together will result in some disagreements so don’t expect a bed of roses, excitement every day or constant romance. Appreciate what you have in your stable relationship and the time you have together in retirement.

share your hobbiesSupposing your husband loves golf, or your wife is a gardener extraordinaire. Spend time appreciating your other half’s passions, whether you enjoy them or not. A relationship is all about give and take and you never know, you may discover a skill for putting or a love of roses yourself.

but not all of theM In every relationship, from the fledgling romance to the long-standing love, couples need space from each other. Make time just for you and allow your partner to spend time apart as well. This may involve taking solo holidays, spending time with friends or taking a class. But if it just means taking a relaxing bubble bath a couple of times a week or reading a book in the study, that’s good too.

stay Positive When you and your partner find yourself in each other’s company day in, day out you’ll undoubtedly come across problems. But even if hidden resentments bubble to the surface, you disagree on how to spend (or save) your nest egg or you just begin to get under each other’s feet, keep a positive outlook, remember why you looked forward to this time and enjoy it as best you can.

if in doubt ask for helP It might be as simple as chatting with a friend or you might choose to contact a relationship counsellor but the important thing is that you know there’s no shame in admitting there’s something not right in your marriage. Retirement can be more stressful than any of us expect but ask for help and take advice and it can be just as wonderful as you hoped.

Think about your relationship after retirement and how do you see it? Languorous breakfasts together in the conservatory? Couples-only cruises? Holding hands on long walks along the promenade? In reality, retirement can put a lot of stress on even the most secure of relationships, after years spending just a few hours together a week you’re suddenly plunged in to 24 hours a day, seven days a week with the same person. So how do you ensure your relationship survives retirement?

The humble beginnings of the campervan go back as far as the 1920s with the first homemade attempts to adapt touring caravans into motorhomes (with very strange results!). But it wasn’t until 1947 that the campervan we know and love today was first conceived, purely out of necessity, starting the vehicle on a long road of adaptations and improvements that resulted in modern, luxury motorhomes.

In 1947, the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsberg, Germany needed to transport parts around the building, so the quick-thinking engineers built platforms on to the chassis of the iconic Beetle car, creating the very first prototype of a camper van! A Dutch businessman, Ben Pon, was so excited by the potential of this idea that he drew up plans for a box van. Only two years later the ‘Type 2 Transporter’ was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show. Volkswagen went on to develop 90 variations of the Type 2 up until 1954, from ice cream vans to fire trucks. In 1957, production began in earnest and by the early 1960s adaptations had been made to make it family-friendly, with seats, windows and cookers. The word started to spread around the world: in 1963 America had ordered 150,000 campervans, and the vehicle became a favourite of the footloose hippy generation. By 1975, Volkswagen’s Hanover factory in Germany had produced four million campervans and today the Type 2 has become a sought-after collector’s item, fetching up to £20,000!

Motorhome freedom is big with the over 50s looking to spend the silver pound - and can you blame them? A campervan lets you head for the open road. The reason campervans are such an attractive option is it can suit your whims - if you love a place, you can stay as long as you want. Hate it - move on to the next place. You have the freedom. And with today’s campervans, you can do it in comfort and style.

The appeal: Caravanning is the most popular type of paid-for holiday in the UK, and it’s becoming more and more

popular with those who want to explore Europe too. And if you’re stuck in a stuffy office, than why not dream of owning a campervan, hitting the open road and enjoying lazy summer days? Think of the fun and freedom you will have. If you thought campervans were all about uncomfortable angles and beds miraculously put together with the help of a tea tray and sofa cushion, think again. Campervans are stylish, comfortable and spacious. For many it gives them the independence of a second home with the freedom to travel. It is the ultimate expression of freedom, without having to compromise on comfort.

CAMPERVANS have come a long way since Leisuredrive first started producing them in 1969 in particular the Volkswagen campervan, which is Leisuredrive’s mainstay.

Established 44 years ago in Manchesterl Leisuredrive moved to Bolton to a factory and showground in Stoneclough Road, Kearsley, conveniently located just off the A666/ Junction three of the M61.

Leisuredrive offers the lowest priced VW campervans in Great Britain today.

But, even if you feel a new one is beyond your reach, Leisuredrive can tailor a second-hand one to your budget - so no middle man takes a profit out. Leisuredrive’s policy has always been top quality campervans at value for money prices and thousands of satisfied

customers have attested judging by the walls full of thank you letters in Leisuredrive’s reception. Of course the beauty of a Leisuredrive campervan is it can be tailored to your budget.

It’s probably nicer to drive than your car, and is more multi-purpose-ideal for daily use, work, shopping, treating the kids to picnics and days out and at the weekends, great camping holidays. And that’s without considering the money you save on the massive hotel bills, added to the fun and the freedom to go wherever you want.

Once you’ve picked the campervan you like, just add your choice of interior and drive away in your new campervan in a few weeks - it’s as easy as that.

It’s like having your own new mini home, plus everything is, and always has been made in-house-cabinet work, soft furnishings and even the fibreglass roof extensions. This ensures quality through every stage from start to completion. As to staff loyalty, owner and founder Derek Andrews has 44 years’ service, the two senior managers 34 years each and many others boast service of 25 years plus, so everyone knows what they are doing.

Whatever you are looking for in a campervan, visit Leisuredrive, which is open every day for viewing (Mon-Thurs 8.30am - 4.30pm, Fri 8.30am - 3.30pm, Sat 10am - 1pm and Sunday by appointment) and will even take your car or caravan in exchange.

RETIREMENT HEALTH

12 GOLDEN YEARS ROADSHOW • APRIL 2013

After 40 yeArs in the workplace, it’s easy to think of yourself as heading for the

scrapheap when retirement beckons. But look at your retirement as a new lease of life and the opportunity to enjoy yourself, and retirees don’t have to mark the dawn of a lifetime of daytime soaps and complaining to the local paper.

At this time of life, perhaps more than ever before, your health is absolutely paramount. Keep in touch with your GP, take advantage of free medical care and charge-free prescriptions, including the all important flu jab, mammograms and prostate checks. Keep ageing at bay by taking up regular exercise, whether it’s a round of golf twice a week, joining a local walking group or taking up the local leisure centre’s discounts on OAP swimming and exercise classes.

It’s advice you’ve no doubt heard

before, but it’s important to remember that mental health is just as important as bodily health. From the morning crossword to reading last thing at night keep your brain ticking over in a way that suits you. Try brain training games, take an organised holiday or join up to a local book club or pub quiz team.

Those of us leaving work now remember a time when the world wasn’t there for a taking as it is for our children and grandchildren. But take a leaf out of the younger generation’s book and perhaps you’ll find yourself tempted to relocate – which of course you now can – or maybe you’ll even rediscover romance on a remote island.

Retirement gives you time to yourself, to relax and do all of those things you’ve been putting off for so many years while working and raising children have taken priority. So use it well, enjoy yourself and do what makes you happy – you deserve it. n

GOLDEN AGE

16 GOLDEN YEARS ROADSHOW • APRIL 2013

oK, so yoUr face has a few extra lines and there are a couple of surplus inches around your waist, but new research has shown that we are actually getting happier as we get older.

A study of 10,000 people across the UK has revealed that our mental satisfaction increases after middle age, despite a drop in our physical quality of life.

Dr Saverio Stranges, who led the research at Warwick University, said: “It’s obvious that people’s physical quality of life deteriorates as they age, but what is interesting is that their mental well-being doesn’t deteriorate – in fact it increases.

He said, ”We suggest that this could be due to better coping abilities, an interpretation supported by previous research showing older people tend to have internal mechanisms to deal better with hardship or negative circumstances than those who are younger.

”It could also be due to a lowering of expectations from life, with older people less likely to put pressure on themselves in the personal and professional spheres.

”The study analysed lifestyle and health patterns to measure quality of life using eight different factors including perception of general health, pain, social functioning and mental health.

It also looked at being overweight, and found that people with a BMI of more than 30 showed a similar mental quality of life level to those considered to be a healthy weight.

The effect of sleep on quality of life also formed part of the study and discovered that people who spend between six and eight hours in bed have better physical and mental health scores than those who slept fewer than six or more than eight hours a night.

The findings echo those of a survey of more than 1,500 people aged 50 and over by insurance company Engage Mutual.

The top ten benefits of a golden age1. Being in relatively good health2. Having more time to enjoy life3. Being In a relatively good

financial position4. Having a relationship that is

stronger than ever5. Being comfortable with

your body6. Happiness with life

achievements so far7. The mortgage being paid off8. Knowing what you want

from life9. Having children who are happy

and content with their lives10. Being able to take lots

of holidays.

Fifties are the new golden age

If you’ve hit 45 and are feeling down in the dumps, don’t despair — the good times are on their way.

Being in a strong relationship, having paid off the mortgage and the children being happy and independent are key to a golden age in your fifties with 44% of those questioned saying they are more content with their lives than ever before.

With increased life expectancy, being 50 is considered to be relatively young and those who have managed to stay healthy and been able to plan their finances may start to feel the benefit with more cash to spend on holidays and hobbies, rather than working just to pay the mortgage.

Many parents reported a sense of relief when their children settled down with 52% saying they enjoy having more time on their hands, and more than a fifth enjoying a great social life and good circle of friends.

Another big bonus is that the things we worried about in our twenties and thirties no longer seem so important, with 85% of over 50s admitting that they have long ceased to care about relatively trivial and transient issues.

And over a third say they no longer worry about whether they are good looking or thin. n

HEALTH

the Nhs BoWel Cancer Screening Programme offers screening every two years to all men and women

aged 60 to 74 and registered with a GP. People over 75 can request a screening kit by calling 0800 707 60 60.

People who take part in the programme will be sent a simple to use home test kit with full instructions. The test involves collecting a small sample from three separate bowel motions and returning the kit to the laboratory in a specially designed pre paid envelope. The samples will be analysed and results will be provided within two weeks.

Most people screened will have a normal result. People who have an abnormal result will be invited to an appointment with a specialist screening nurse to discuss having further investigations. Around 40% of people with an abnormal screening result will be found to have polyps (small clumps of abnormal cells which may develop into cancer), which can be removed easily. Only about 10% of people requiring further investigation will have cancer. Often this is at an early stage when it can be much more easily and successfully treated. For more information on the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme please freephone 0800 707 60 60 or visit the website www.cancerscreening.nhs.uk/bowel/

Checking for Bowel CancerBowel cancer is one of the biggest cancer killers in the UK. It affects more than one in 20 people and kills more than 16,000 each year, yet it is one of the most treatable forms of cancer if detected early.

melANomA rAtes hAve more than tripled over the last 30 years, rising from 7.5 cases of melanoma per 100,000 people in their 50s in Britain to 26.6 cases per 100,000.

And the latest available figures show that the total number of cases of malignant melanoma for all ages increased from around 12,100 in the UK in 2009 to around 12,800 in 2010 — a rise of more than five per cent.

The new statistics were released from Cancer Research UK which says the earlier cancer is diagnosed, the better chance people have to beat the disease.

The stark rise in melanoma rates highlights the importance of raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of skin cancer, encouraging people to visit their doctor promptly if they notice any unusual changes in their skin, and of the need to be safe in the sun.

The awareness campaign is being supported by Tesco’s, which includes making Cancer Research UK leaflets about early signs of skin cancer

Middle-aged hit by skin cancer Middle-aged Brits have seen cases of the most dangerous form of skin cancer – malignant melanoma – soar from fewer than 500 a year to almost 2,000 since the end of the 1970s.

easily accessible to millions of customers. The supermarket giant also aims to raise £10 million this year to fund a series of early diagnosis research projects across the UK.

One of the projects is being carried out by a group of researchers at the University of Edinburgh who are finding new ways to help people recognise the signs of skin cancer.

The team, led by Professor Jonathan Rees, want to see if using web-based images could be more successful at helping people recognise abnormalities than existing information.

Professor Rees says: “People’s idea of what skin cancer looks like is limited to three or four images that are widely used to promote awareness of the disease but we don’t think this goes far enough with helping people identify the problem and going to their doctor.

“With support from Tesco, the team in Edinburgh are working to use the internet and the potential it offers to access many images. It’s a bit like bird spotting — using pictures as a guide to what malignant melanoma could look like and helping people make a better decision about seeing their doctor.

“It’s worrying that melanoma rates are on the rise. But, if caught early, melanoma can be treated very successfully.

Thirty years ago malignant melanoma was the 17th most common form of cancer in the UK’s middle-aged — now it’s number five.

Sara Hiom, director of information at Cancer Research UK, adds: “We know that cancer survival in the UK lags behind the best in Europe and this is likely because of a combination of many factors including late diagnosis. “Our Spot Cancer Early campaign and partnership with Tesco are raising awareness of the difference early diagnosis can make to surviving cancer

“Melanoma is a largely preventable disease; people can reduce their chance of developing skin cancer in the first place if they protect their skin from sunburn. But it’s also important that people are aware of the warning signs for malignant melanoma.

“Look out for changes in size, shape, or colour of a mole, freckle or normal patch of skin — these should be reported to a GP without delay. In particular look for moles or freckles that are asymmetrical, with uneven colours or borders, larger than a pencil top eraser, are itchy or bleed.

“The chances are this won’t turn out to be cancer, but if it is, spotting it early could make a real difference to the outcome.

receNt fIgUres from the Office of National Statistics show that average retirement ages are rising, with men now an average age of 64.6,

compared with 63.8 in 2004, and women working until 62.3 years compared with 61.2 previously.

Now a new study has revealed that two in five people planning to retire this year would be happy to work past 65 if they had the chance — however only 13% would choose to stay on with their current employer. The main motivation for more than two thirds of this year’s retirees who want to keep going is a desire to remain physically healthy and mentally active, while more than 54% say they enjoy working and nearly 40% turning their noses up at the prospect of being stuck at home.

However nearly half would prefer to work part-time, either with their current employer or in a new role, more than one in 10 are thinking about starting their own business or earning money from a hobby while five per cent would work as charity volunteers. The Class of 2012 study by Prudential, which looks at the finances and expectations of those planning to retire this year, shows that 48% of men and 32% of women would be happy to continue working past the standard retirement age. Retirement expert Vince Smith-Hughes says: “There is a new retirement reality taking shape across the UK, with thousands of people actively choosing to work past the traditional retirement age. “The fact that so many of this year’s retirees would keep working on a part-time basis is a strong indication that, for many, working is as much about staying young at heart as it is about funding retirement. “Gradual retirement is an increasing trend among pensioners, whether

this means remaining in the same job on a flexible basis or even setting up their own business. Those retiring at 65 will face an average of 19 years in retirement which makes the finanountry, those planning to retire this year in East of England were the keenest to stay part of the workforce with

54% opting to work past 65 if they had the option. Nearly half of Londoners and 45% of people in the South East would

also like to keep working. However, just 29% of Scots are happy to work past 65 given the choice, along with 30% of retirees in Wales and Yorkshire & Humberside, and

only 21% of those in the North East. Saving money to ensure they have enough to live on in retirement is the top priority for people intending to retire this year, although 62% of women are more likely to prioritise saving than men at 52%.

Despite this, they are all determined to have a fun-filled retirement. More than a third say that spending

money travelling the world will be a priority, while 43% pledged to put

themselves first and intend to lavish spare lolly on themselves.

Giving to charity and spending money on fighting the ageing

process are low priorities —  fewer than one in

20 image-conscious pensioners intend to spend on anti-ageing treatments, while only slightly more will

prioritise giving money to charity. Smith-Hughes

continues: “Today’s retirees are likely to spend

longer in retirement than previous generations so it is encouraging to see that they understand the importance

of saving money to ensure they can live comfortably. Saving shouldn’t be regarded as

something that suddenly stops once you retire, and the current generation of retirees seems to be more aware of this than ever before. “It’s not only about saving though; many retirees in the Class of 2012 are determined to spend money on enjoying themselves. n
