So what is the lifespan of a tennis ball? So what is the lifespan of a tennis ball?

The answer can vary from the type of ball you use, the type of surface and the time spent playing with the ball. Lets break it down to the type of ball and the surface, as these are the two main factures that affect the lifespan of the modern tennis ball.

The BallThere are 2 popular types of tennis balls. The rst is the pressurised ball, as you would know like a Slazenger Grass court Tennis Ball or a Wilson Australian Open Tennis Ball, which is used in the major Grand Slam event around the world. The modern regulation tennis ball is kept under pressure of around two atmospheres or 29.5 psi in a sealed can until initially used. A general rule is once you break the seal on a can of tennis balls you will nd that the balls will lose their pressure because the pressure inside the ball is highers than the natural air pressure on the outside. The tennis ball has a porpus rubber core and with the air pressure being greater inside the ball, it will force its way out through this rubber core. The tennis ball is a consumable item, which you would replace on a regular basis if you are looking to have the ball perform at its peak performance.

The second type of tennis ball is a pressure-less ball like a Tretorn Micro X Tennis Ball that is used in the high altitude areas around the world or as great training ball. The pressure-less tennis ball is generally made using a rubber core that does not need to be pressurised inside the ball to keep the regular bounce required.

The pressure-less tennis ball will continue to have the same bounce pattern for most of its useful life but will have the cover wear over the tennis ball’s lifespan. This type of ball is great to use in a tennis ball machine, as it will have a much longer life span as a training ball compared to a pressurised ball.

The Tennis Court Surface Tennis court surfaces can be broken into four main types with the most popular two in Australia being hard-court and synthetic grass. The four court surfaces are hard-court, synthetic grass, grass and dirt.

The court surface is a huge factor on a tennis ball’s lifespan with the outside cover on a tennis ball being the main reason for the tennis ball to shorten it lifespan. A hard-court is generally very abrasive on a ball and you will nd that a ball for hard-court will have a lot more nylon mixed with the felt to give a tennis ball lifespan a longer life.

Most of the manufacturing companies make a tennis ball suitable for a hard-court with the two most popular ball brands being the Wilson Australian Open tennis ball and the Slazenger Hard-court tennis ball. The three other main surfaces are a lot easier on the lifespan of the balls because it is generally a softer surface.

As the synthetic grass is fast becoming the most popular tennis court surface used in Australia and you will nd that the tennis ball used on these surfaces will have more felt than nylon on the tennis ball cover. Again you nd the tennis ball companies make a synthetic grass court ball such as the Slazenger Grass court tennis ball.

The other two surfaces, grass and dirt are less popular in Australia as these courts require a lot of maintenance to keep up to a standard to play on but would generally use a grass court ball on natural grass and on a dirt/clay court you would nd the ball will be the hard-court tennis ball, as it will not uff up as much as this ball has more nylon than felt to keep the cover as new condition as possible.

Heel pain and Plantar Fasciitis Beenleigh French Open – Hot Shots TournamentEach day, chronic pain drains those people who suffer from it, saps their

joy of life and affects the quality of life. A painful heel for example, makes every step more challenging than it should be.

If you are getting heel pain under your foot particularly when rst getting up in the morning there is a high likelihood you may be suffering from plantar fasciitis.

Heel pain associated with plantar fasciitis usually comes on slowly. It is worse in the mornings or after inactivity and the pain decreases with activity. Pain resumes after activity has ceased. As the condition becomes worse pain may be felt when standing and with activity.

People who have low arches (at footed) or excessively high arches are more likely to suffer from heel pain leading to plantar fasciitis. The condition is associated with overuse often seen in runners, dancers, tennis and squash players. Mature aged people are susceptible to heel pain possible due to excessive walking in non-supportive footwear. Being over weight and having tight calf muscles are also recognized as contributing factors to heel pain and plantar fasciitis.

Fortunately there is a clinically proven treatment called shock wave therapy to treat chronic heel pain. This non –invasive treatment delivers shock waves to the affected area via the skin. These shock waves activate the body’s self-healing processes where the pain occurs even after the therapy has been completed.

For more information on this new therapy for chronic pain contact e-sab clinic on 55381844 for a free consultation.

On Saturday the 15th of June, Gold Coast held their rst Grand Slam “Hot Shots” tournament. Beenleigh Tennis Club ran a fun and exciting “Hot Shots” tournament. The tournament consisted of Red Ball, Orange Ball and Green ball singles.

For most players this was their rst taste of tournament play in tennis. The day was enjoyable and the kids were given lots of tennis and all seemed to have a great time!

There were a total of 70 participants for the day! All players were able to feel like Rafael Nadal having a chance to play on the clay and feel a part of our Gold Coast French Open “Hot Shots” titles.

MLC Hot Shots Tournament is the perfect opportunity for children to participate in a competitive environment for the rst time, whilst still understanding the key elements of the MLCTHS program.

The objective of the MLC Hot Shots Tournament is to provide a competitive arm to the program so children are able to experience tennis tournaments for the rst time whilst still developing their skills through the MLC Tennis Hot Shots program. The aim is that these tournaments will begin to shape the culture of all tournaments across the country and provide a pathway for children to progress through.

The Beenleigh tennis club put on a sausage sizzle for all players and families. It was a fantastic fun lled day for all involved.

Thank you to all who were involved in the day and to all coaches who supported this event and brought their kids over to support and playing in this event.

A huge congratulations to Alison Scott/James Rapkins and their staff at Beenleigh tennis club for running a successful tournament that was a lot of fun for all who were involved.

The 2013 Volkl Gold Coast Junior Age Championships was held across the Queen’s Birthday Weekend in June.

Tournament Director, Wayne Hawker said, “After countless attempts to dry the tennis courts at Queens Park on nals day, rain was the unfair winner at 11.00 am when play was called off. This year we saw, in excess of 250 young talented juniors from around 5 states in Australia enjoy 2 days of high quality tennis in many age groups.

Tennis Gold Coast conducted the annual Volkl Gold Coast Junior Age 2013 Championships utlising an amazing 67 tennis courts across 7 Gold Coast tennis centres.

The TGC committee members, volunteers and ofcial referees worked tirelessly to run this years event and I am sure we will be there 2014 again It was a real shame that we only got to complete one nal, the girls 10/Under event which saw Soa Ivanova defeat Ellah Dunn 9-8. I know the junior players were disappointed, but unfortunately the weather is one thing that is out of our control.”

A big thank you must go out to the Tennis Gold Coast Committee and dedicated volunteers that helped over the weekend.

2013 Volkl Tournament The annual night-of-nights for tennis across the state is set for Saturday 9 November. The 2013 Queensland Tennis Awards will be held once again at Rydges Southbank, in Brisbane.

The southeast corner of QLD and in particular the Gold Coast, has always been a region that produces many good tennis players. The challenge for junior players is to understand they are actually competing in an international sport. For this reason players must be prepared to break out of their comfort zone and region and look to compete with players from other areas of QLD or interstate. In doing so, they get a much better idea of where they need to improve, develop a more worldly mentality and understand why continued hard work is needed. Other opportunities may be to travel overseas to compete, introducing the player to the concept of competing against the rest of the world.

Through Tennis Australia’s development programs which take Australia’s most promising juniors to compete overseas, we now see our players achieving encouraging results around the globe. Prior to Wimbledon, Australia had 3 players inside the ATP top 100, 10 players ranked between 100 and 300 and 7 inside the top 500. Sam Stosur stands alone inside the WTA’s top 100, but another 10 female players are ranked from 100 to 300.

My belief is that if a young player is focused on a career in tennis then it is wise to provide competitive opportunities outside their usual environment. I believe we are all products of our environment and therefore talented and highly motivated players placed in a more competitive environment will have a greater chance to realise their full potential and achieve their dreams. This is why I provide and encourage a range of interstate and international tours for my students.

Glenn Hamilton is the Director and Head Coach of the Tennis Blue International Training Academy and is currently in France with a group of his Elite junior players competing on the French clay court circuit.

Wet weather wasn’t going to stop the 2013 Bruce Lynton Final being played this year with the decision being made for the men’s and women’s nal being played concurrently, side by side.

Sunshine Coast teen, Andrea Dikosavijevic and Brisbane’s Steven de Waard won their titles within 20 minutes of each other.

Dewaard, has been playing at the Rosebowl since the age of ten, defeated Gold Coaster and defending titleholder, Brett Hunter in a cliffhanger to join illustrious names such as Rod Laver, Mal Anderson, Pat Cash, Geoff Masters and Scott Draper as a Rosebowl winner.

The Brisbane player fought hard to take his rst title of the year 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The women’s nal saw Shannon Stamenovic take the rst set 6-2, but young gun Andrea Dikosavijevic didn’t give up and fought back to win the match 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Well done to all the players who competed in this year’s event and we look forward to seeing you back next year.

Special mention and thank you must be made to tournament sponsors Bruce Lynton BMW who has sponsored the tournament 22 years consecutively.
