New Faces
Music is at central part of our ministry here at Seaside. It infuses our
worship with power and draws us in to a deeper connection with God both by teaching and by helping us to center our spirits during worship. We are blessed with many gifted musicians in our Choir, Praise Team and our numerous ensembles. But the leadership of this ministry gives it shape and sets the tone.
For more than a dozen years, Seaside's music team of Kathryn Parker and Lynn Enzor have overseen enormous growth. The Praise Team's growing repertoire and the increasing demands for accompaniment for the choir mean that the absence of even one of our leaders creates a bind. Add to that the demands on Lynn in her "other life" as a bank manager, and we began to recognize the need for a third person in Music Ministry leadership.
After more than a year of discussions and search, we are pleased to announce the addition of Janette Schroeder to our Music staff beginning May 15th. Janette joins us as Assistant Music Director for Traditional Worship. She will be playing organ as well as piano and will help with the duties of directing our choirs, handbells and other ensembles. Janette has an extensive background in music ministry and we are excited to include her in our program.
The addition of Janette will allow Lynn to focus her considerable gifts on the oversight of the praise team ministry and our 9:30 worship service. Her new title will be Assistant Music Director for Contemporary Worship. Of course Kathryn continues to capably fill her role as team leader and Minister of Music for the church. Janette will provide accompaniment and other roles at 8:00 and 11:00 each week. Of course each is capable of pinch-hitting when needed!
Thank you for what I know will be a warm welcome for Janette and for your continued support of our music ministry.
Scott

Phase one of the Garden of Disciples
improvements has begun. Look for these improvements:
An awning was installed over the storage door to prevent swelling of the door on hot summer days.
Pavers on the sidewalk and platform areas in Apostle's Corner. This will widen the sidewalk to allow for wheelchairs and a smoother walking surface.
New platform area in the Apostle's Corner to accommodate more family members during a service.
Sealing the top of the walls and painting the walls with mildew resistant paint.
Switching gates to new rust free gates.
What’s New in the Garden of the Disciples?

Seaside’s Health & Wellness Ministry Team and Seaside’s Stephen Ministry will host a day of
informative speakers on topics of interest to our congregation and community.

Excitement is in the air at Seaside! We are pleased to announce the addition of Janette Schroeder to our Music staff as of May 15th. Janette

June bring VBS and lots of wonderful children as this year we navigate the waters of God's amazing love! I can't wait to see their smiling faces and teach them the fun songs we have planned!
Mark your calendars for a real treat on Tuesday, June 19th! The choir is hosting the Imani African Children's Choir in concert at 7:00 PM. Again, there will be no tickets needed but a love offering will be received for this group. The choir consists of 19 youth who sing and play drums with passion and enthusiasm! Join us as we support this ministry and invite your neighbors to come, too!
BASEBALL FANS: Join us Tuesday, July 10th for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans game. The Soaring Angels will sing the National Anthem. Please contact Gandy Henry at 843-918-6007 by July 6th for group rate tickets. It's Taco Tuesday so come out and join the fun!
June, July and August mean a little R & R around here and our choirs and ensembles need the rest!! However, don't worry... we are planning and working on new ideas for the fall! I do some of my best planning on the beach!! So, during these months, be sure to share your ideas with me or let me know if you are interested in becoming a part of our Music Ministry in the fall. Perhaps you have been considering joining the choir or playing handbells or getting out that instrument you used to play and practicing and adding your sound to our program. Now's the time to prayerfully consider your role in our Music Minstry.
Enjoy the summer and rest up for an exciting fall!
With a voice of singing, Kathryn

AUGUST NEWSLETTER ARTICLES ARE DUE BY JULY 15TH
United Methodist Men The United Methodist Men will meet at 6:30 PM Monday, June
4th, the last UMM meeting before summer break. Monthly meetings will resume in September. The June 4th meeting will be our 2nd Annual Charitable Organization Dinner. Representatives from the local charities supported by UMM will be there to update us on their charitable work and to receive their 2018 donation checks from the UMM. Ken Wensel, Larry Moore, and Ron Brezicki will be providing the dinner that evening. Come and enjoy a good dinner with great Christian fellowship. These meetings also provide an excellent opportunity to meet and socialize with men from Sunday morning services other than the one you normally attend.
Our annual UMM Golf Tournament at Panthers Run will be held on Saturday, June 2nd. We should have a preliminary update report on the results for year at the June 4th meeting.
United Methodist Men enjoy serving our church and community. We are looking for a record in 2018 of 50 men in attendance at our meetings. Consider bringing a friend or neighbor. They do not have to be a member at Seaside.
STEPHEN
MINISTERY
CLASS OF 2018
Members of the Stephen Ministry class have
worked extremely hard, proving their dedication to this most important ministry. They have spent over fifty hours in training with an emphasis on providing Christian care in a confidential relationship. Seaside is blessed to have an active Stephen Ministry, having served so many since the first class in 2002. The new class will begin to serve as care givers when they are commissioned on Sunday, July 15 during the service they attend. Please celebrate them for answering God’s call to Stephen Ministry.
Stroke Talk is a support group for those who suffered a stroke or who are interested in learning about strokes. We meet the 2nd Thursday of each month at 1:30 pm. Programs and group discussions are part of our format. Please join us and share your experiences and learn more about your health.
Our next 2 meetings are
June 14th and July 12th at 1:30 pm.
All are welcome.
Vacation Bible School, June 11-15 This year's theme, "Rolling River Rampage" will take our kids on the ride of a lifetime with God! All kids ages 4-rising 5th Grade are invited to come June 11-15 from 9:00 a.m.-noon. (Preschool Class is full). There is no cost to attend but we do require pre-registration so we know how many to expect. Registration available on our website!
Great Music + Summer Breezes + Fellowship = Food Pantry Support During the Ocean Isle Beach Summer Concerts held at the Coastal Carolina Museum lot each Friday from 6:30 - 8:00 PM, "sand buckets" are passed to receive donations. The funds collected benefit a local organization. The May 25th, June 1st and June 8th "buckets" will go directly to Seaside's Food Pantry. Seaside volunteers will be "passing the bucket" during the concert. Bring a chair, a cooler if you like, and hear some great music and support Seaside's Food Pantry. Visit the Ocean Isle Beach summer concert series website to learn more about the venue and concert bands. Great entertainment for a summer evening!

What Does The Bible Say About My Dog?
Do you have questions about what Christianity has to say about animals? Will
you see Fido in heaven? Do you care deeply about animals and their welfare but are
unsure how faith connects your concern with God’s concern? Then we invite you to be a
part of a summer short-term six-week Sunday School class beginning Sunday, July 1st at either 9:30 a.m. or 11:00
a.m. in Room 222. Led by Stefanie Riley, this class will take a look at the role of Christianity in the care for animals
using a combination of Bible study, videos and messages from other leaders of the faith. If you are not already
connected to a Sunday School class, and you love animals, then this will be a great opportunity for a bit of summer
spiritual formation! There is no book for this course, but we do ask that you register online or in the Gallery so that
materials can be provided for you.

2018 STARS June 25th-August 3rd
What’s New? 40 Students—20 each from Jessie Mae Monroe & Union Elementary will attend. Standardized planning, testing and assessments across all Summer Learning Programs (see
below). Monday afternoon the children will be split into two groups, 20 children will swim at Brunswick
Community College and 20 students will travel to The First Tee for an hour of instruction and fun at Chingale Creek.
Smaller groups of kids for each afternoon activity, rotating through a series of classes or activities. Smaller groups + more children = a need for more volunteers on Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons. Thank you to everyone who has submitted a volunteer form. Please check your heart and your calendar one more time and consider helping on Tuesdays or Thursdays. You may not realize it, but the time you spend with the kids, your example, smile, kind attention and listening ear may be the only smile and attention some of the children receive. Volunteer forms are located on the STARS table in the Fellowship Hall gathering area. Call Meg with questions. Thank You!
Summer Learning Programs Funded by The Duke Endowment To most of us at Seaside, STARS is a 6 week summer program that provides literacy help and enrichment opportunities to local rising 2nd and 3rd grade students in our community. And it is...but so much more. Since the first group of 16 STARS students spent the summer of 2014 at Seaside, and Monticello United Methodist Church, Statesville, NC. hosted their first group of students in 2013, The Duke Endowment Rural Church team recognized that these SLP’s (Summer Literacy Programs) do provide a needed resource in communities. Research has shown that children who fall short of reading goals by the end of third grade are at greater risk for either not finishing high school, or entering the justice system. The Duke Endowment (TDE) has worked with Seaside and Monticello over the past four years. Through this collaborative work and the Endowments commitment to K-3rd Grade Literacy, a set of Six Guiding Principles has been developed for Summer Literacy Programs. Both Seaside and Monticello now use these principles, along with the implementation guide, to structure our programs. STARS and Ubuntu (Monticello’s program) have agreed to act as program resources for churches who want to learn more. This summer, Fairview UMC, Thomasville, NC will offer a Summer Literacy Program to serve two local schools in their community. We had the opportunity to meet with Fairview’s team in February, along with the Ubuntu team, to share ideas, best practices and learn from The Endowment.
On July 10th, STARS will welcome for their annual visit, our Duke Endowment representative along with the Harvard consultant who works with the teaching teams in all SLP programs. In addition, clergy and lay leaders from interested churches are invited to visit on July 10th to see an SLP in session. During these last weeks of preparation and throughout the summer, please continue to keep
the teachers, volunteers, families, students and leadership for all summer programs in your prayers. Pray for God’s continued guidance, strength, and wisdom; safe and caring environments where God’s love is felt through all of those who serve.
