Country Fair 2016

I was talking with someone new to our area recently and when she learned I was connected to Seaside, she brightened up and said, “Oh, I have heard about your fair and I can’t wait!”

For many, September means the ending of the summer season, the beginning of school, football season, and (mercifully) cooler weather. But for us at Seaside—and for many in this community—September means Country Fair!

Yes, it’s that time again friends. Many of you have signed up already to help out. Others are making arrangements to be at one or more of the events associated with the fair. For everyone else, please check your calendar for the following dates:

September 9 (Friday 5:30—7:00 pm): “A Taste of Italy,” Country Fair Kick-off Dinner in the Fellowship Hall. Join us for your choice of Meat or Vegetable Lasagna, salad, bread, drink and dessert. Pre-sale tickets are $15 and are available now in the church office. Tickets will not be available at the door.

September 11 (Sunday 4:00 pm): “Red White and Blue” Our 2016 RWB Concert features Letters from Home, a dramatic and musical tribute to World War II era Veterans. The appearance of this remarkable duet is courtesy of a grant from BEMC. Doors open at 3:15. There is no charge for the event, but a love offering will be received in support of the fair effort.

September 13 (Tuesday, 8:30 am): Country Fair Setup begins. Tents start going up and tables are moved into place.

September 14 (Wednesday, 8:30 am): Country Fair Setup Continues as we begin moving merchandise into place. Trucks and hands are needed.

September 15 (Thursday, 8:00 am): “All Hands on Deck” Kick-off service will run from 8:00 to 8:30 am, then final setup for the fair begins. This involves moving many of our larger items, so extra pickup trucks and many hands are needed. Lunch for workers will be provided in the Fellowship Hall at noon.

September 16 (Friday, 7:00 am to 6:00 pm): COUNTRY FAIR! September 17 (Saturday, 8:00 am): Live Auction begins at 10:00

am, Silent Auction closes at noon. Clean up begins at 1:00 pm (Hang around and help clean up if you can…PLEASE!)

September 18, (Sunday, 10:00 am): “A Celebration of Unity.” Join us for a single Sunday morning worship service where we celebrate the unity that the fair represents for our congregation. Then take the rest of the day off…you’ve earned it!

Remember the last day for Country Fair drop-offs is August 29th; last day for Pickups (scheduled in advance) is August 30th.

We look forward to a great 2016 Country Fair. Scott

Congratulations readers! The 2016 Reading Program has ended and I have sub-mitted the names of 18 participants. Once again, I did not reach my lofty goal of 25 readers, but one of these days it will happen. Many of you came to me to say that you read some but didn't complete the goal. Just keep reading, as those will count for next year along with your new ones. Certificates will be given out at our

January Prayer Breakfast. The books for 2017 will be ordered as soon as they are announced and should be on the shelf sometime in October. However, don't wait until then! Stop in and pick up a book to get you started! Marie Wilcox

SHELL SEEKERS BOOK CLUB

Are you new to Seaside? Did you know that we have our own Book Club that meets right here at church? Shell Seekers meets the third Monday of each month at 1:00 in the church parlor. Although we do not necessarily read “religious” books, we do strive to choose books to read and discuss that support our faith and enhance our Christian walk with Christ. Many of them are on the best-seller lists! We have taken the summer off and resume our monthly meetings Monday, September 19, 2016. At this meeting we will not be discussing a book, but will be planning the coming year of selections. Won't you consider joining us and bringing your own suggestions to the group? Please call Marie Wilcox at 910-575-1076 for more information or with questions.

The Seaside United Methodist Women have had a busy summer! A huge thank you goes out to the many women who provided their time and financial donations toward the STARS Monday night family dinners. The yummy food was thoroughly enjoyed by all the children and their families. Also, each circle kept the daily snack tubs filled with healthy snacks for the STARS. Many STARS volunteers were from the UMW circles, cooking with the students, chaperon-ing field trips, or serving on the Nutrition Committee. They were always available to fill in where needed during the six-week program. Also during the summer months, Martha Hetrick (Thank God For Friends...TGFF Circle),

volunteered to create a basket of gourmet nuts, funded by donations from UMW circles, which will be donated to the Wilmington Epicurean Event’s silent auction. All proceeds benefit the United Methodist Home for Children.

Many UMW members spent the week of VBS serving as teachers and guides as the children enjoyed "Cave Quest." We all became young again as we experienced God's Word through the eyes, ears, and minds of the children!

We look forward to resuming our Circle meetings in September as we plan our fall and winter ministry activities. Blessings and Peace, Sandra Shuford UMW Unit President

A great big thank you to all for the wonderful start to my retirement. What a feeling it was to stand before all three services and receive your best wishes and blessings. Thanks

also to Mary Jane and Scott for making the arrangements and for my gift from the church. It's a beautiful curved piece of glass with a picture of the church on it and my name etched in the glass. God Bless, Don Dustin Sr.

Attendance Griefshare began its ninth cycle on August 19th. This marks the fourth year

since we began the Griefshare program at Seaside back in August 2012. The program has grown in many ways: we've added new facilitators and helpers to accommodate the growing number of participants; a number of our participants have accepted the care of a Stephen Minister to assist them in their healing process, and several have become members of Seaside and others now attend regularly.

Griefshare meets on Friday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:30 pm in the choir room. Each session is self-contained, includes a video seminar, small group discussion and workbook. Anyone who has lost a loved one or close friend is welcome to attend any time during the 13-week cycle. For more information about Griefshare, call Jim McNeill at 910-393-9548 or Barb Bowden at 910-368-6990.

Greg Rowles Concert Rescheduled

February 25, 2017

Greg Rowles has advised our United Methodist Men that because his mother is in failing health, he is canceling his outside performances in September and October so that he might be with her in her time of need. Consequently his scheduled concert here at Seaside on October 22nd will be postponed until February 25, 2017. Our thoughts

and prayers go out to Greg and family during this difficult time. After their summer break, Seaside’s United Methodist Men will meet Monday, September 12th at 6:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall. September’s speaker is Barry Glick, president of the Ocean Ridge History Club, and a retired US Army Colonel. Barry worked in media relations and public affairs on behalf of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His presentation promises to be both informative and amusing. Barry, as a devoted history buff, has some interesting stories and historical outlooks he is willing to share, but to keep the evening light and entertaining, he will focus his upbeat and comically slanted presentation on the evolution of the North Carolina State Flag. All men of Seaside are invited to attend . You’ll find the sign up sheet in the Gallery.

Country Fair Kick-Off Dinner September 9th 5:30 to 7:00

Seaside’s very own Mary Jordan, chef extraordinaire, will create a “Taste of Italy.” She’ll cook her special lasagna, meat or veggie, offer a salad, bread, and a drink.

The meal will finish with desserts homemade by our church bakers. The Fellowship Hall will be decorated as though you are in an Italian bistro, table

decorations courtesy of Seaside’s craft group. Presale tickets are $15 and will be available during the week in the church office or on Sundays in the Fellowship

Hall between services. Good food, good friends. Don’t miss this event.

Join September 29, Thursday, at 8:00 a.m. for a scheduled Weedathon in the Garden. If you can't make it

then, come whenever you like. Bring your tools and go to it. If you have not yet had a chance to see the Garden of Disciples since it has been renovated, please take the opportunity to visit the Garden. It is beautiful. It is the perfect place to take a moment, take in the sights and sounds of nature, and reflect.

SEPTEMBER! New school year, new choir year! Please check the following rehearsal schedules for the choirs or ensembles you participate in and mark your calendar!

August 31: 9:30 - Soaring Angels September 6: 5:00 - Sounds of Celebration Instrumental Ensemble September 7: 11:30- Seaside Belles 4:30 - Joyful Noise Children's Choir 5:30 - Jubilee Handbells Classical Ensemble—please note that we will not begin rehearsals until October. Our Sanctuary Choir has been working hard to present our Red, White & Blue Celebration on Sunday,

September 11th at 4:00pm. No tickets are needed, as there will be only one performance. Doors will open at 3:15 and the prelude will begin at 3:45 so come early! Following the choir's performance we will be treated to a performance by Letters From Home—a duo who sing and dance much like the Andrew Sisters. Spread the word and let's have a full house for this event!

On Country Fair Sunday, September 18th, there will be only one service from 10:00-11:30 and one choir. I love to hear our whole choir sing together—they make a beautiful sound! I hope you will be there to worship with us and celebrate our unity and the success of our Country Fair. God always blesses us when His children work together!

With a voice of singing, Kathryn Parker

On July 12th, 2016, SUMC welcomed the newest class of Stephen Ministers during a commissioning service in the Sanctuary. Following the commissioning the new Stephen Ministers and their families enjoyed a dinner in the Fellowship Hall which was provided by the “seasoned” Stephen Ministers. Stephen Minister candidates participate in 50 hours of training on many subjects focusing on how to be a Christian caregiver and

friend to those who are hurting. Training classes were led by Pastor Mary Jane Wilson-Parsons and Stephen Leader Dina Braddy. The new class members are enthusiastic about their new roles at Seaside and are eagerly looking forward to becoming caregivers. Care is taken to match a Stephen Minister and their Care Receiver. It’s always important to emphasize the confidentiality of the relationship between the Stephen Minister and the care receiver. That confidentiality is the primary directive of all Stephen Ministers.

If you or someone you know could benefit from a caring Christian relationship, please contact Carol Aspy 910-880-2999 or June Donley, 843-455-4581.

Congratulations to Seaside’s newest Stephen Ministers: Jo Carol Allen, Carol Bramley, Christina Dooley, Brian Houger, Diane Jones, Tony Ianotta, Nancy Moon, Sara Moore, Marvin Ragland, Greg Rocklage, Sandra Shuford, and Deb Wensel.

Please take a moment to thank these caring and dedicated individuals for their commitment. They'll be wearing the blue name badge of a Stephen Minister.

Stroke Talk August September 8th at 1:30 p.m.

"Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world."

In this month’s Currents, you will find a prayer calendar to guide you in praying for our children and students as they begin a new school year. While the beginning of school presents opportunities that are new and exciting, it can also be a time of difficult transition for students and their families, as well as for our educators. We are asking our Seaside family to please use the enclosed prayer calendar to lift in prayer the students, families and educators of our community. Stick it on your refrigerator, your mirror, or anywhere else that will remind you to hold them in your prayers each day. May God’s blessings go with them this year!

The Choir of Seaside United Methodist Church will present its “Red, White, & Blue Concert” on September 11th, 2016 at 4:00 PM in the sanctuary. This will be a two-part performance. We will also recognize all who served our country especially any WWII veterans and their spouses. The second part we will present Letters From Home, which will pay tribute to America’s veterans and active military and their families. Letters From Home is a musical performance featuring Erinn Diaz and Amanda Newman dressed in period military attire. Their mission is to honor veterans, active military and their families through the music. You will be dazzled with tap dancing and patriotic songs and your hearts will be touched forever with national pride. Letters From Home has toured in over 25 states. The Program will be held in the Sanctuary at Seaside United Methodist Church and admission is free as it is sponsored by Brunswick Electric Membership Cooperation.

FALL CLASS SCHEDULE (cont.) Discovering God's Vision For Your Life: You and Your Spiritual Gifts Facilitator: Mary Jane Wilson-Parsons Begins: Wednesday, September 21, 1:30-3:00 p.m. (8 weeks) Room: 210 The Holy Spirit has given each of us unique gifts to carry out God's work in the world. It is not necessarily easy, however, to discover our gifts or to develop and use them effectively. In this class you will discover the unique gifts God has given you. You will find renewed understanding of who God created you to be and God's design for your Christian community. You will also explore opportunities to develop and use your gifts in the congregation and community. Klesis: God's Call and the Journey of Faith Facilitator: Doug Allen Begins: Wednesday, September 21, 1:30-3:00 p.m. (8 weeks) Room: 222 - You must have completed Spiritual Gifts to take this class The call of God is extended to every person; first to become a believer in Jesus, then to become his presence in the world. This course was written to help Christians more carefully consider how God might be calling them to be the presence of Christ in their world. More than a spiritual gifts study, Klesis leads participants to a more holistic consideration of their unique call: by exploring the call stories of biblical characters; by considering the relationship between call and discipleship; through self-assessed identity and personality instruments; by exploring a biblical view of ministry. 1 Kings: An Inductive Bible Study Facilitator: Lorraine Meehan Begins: Wednesday, September 21, 6:30-8:00 p.m. (5 weeks) Room: 222 First Kings recounts the history of the kings of Israel from Solomon to Zedekiah. It opens with King David nearing the end of his life. Although many vied for the throne, only one could take the seat. God desired a king who would follow God fully and keep the commandments, leading the people in the ways of God. The story begins with a powerful, united kingdom but ends with a nation divided into two, Israel and Judah. This study challenges us to observe our God's great faithfulness to Israel, understanding that God's desire for us today is that we walk fully with God. Seeing Gray in a World of Black & White (An Adam Hamilton DVD Study) Facilitators: Kim Loucks & Carolyn Hurst-Loucks Begins: Wednesday, September 21, 6:30-8:00 p.m. (6 weeks) Room: 210 Everyone agrees that America is polarized with ever-hardening positions held by people unwilling to listen to one another. No one agrees on what to do about it. Hamilton rejects the easy assumptions and sloppy analysis of black and white thinking, seeking instead the truth on all sides of the issues and offers a faithful and compassionate way forward. The point is not always to agree but to think about what you believe. Hearing God: Developing a Conversational Relationship With God Facilitator: Len Bernauer Begins: Wednesday, September 21, 6:30-8:00 p.m. (6 weeks) Room: 207 This course is designed to help you develop a conversational relationship with God. You will work at developing a spiritual awareness of hearing God's voice and being certain that it is the Spirit speaking to you. The format of this class is both DVD as well as class discussion.

Unity Sunday—One Service @ 10 am

Thank You Christian Educators!

Sunday, August 28th was Christian Educator's Recogntion Sunday for our leaders who have taught classes at Seaside this past year, from Preschool through Adult classes. Be sure to say a word of "thanks" to them for their hard work and dedication in keeping us tapped in to the refreshing waters of the Spirit's presence in our lives.
