May God grant peace to all who mourn and comfortto all who are bereaved.

Dear Friends,

It is our honor to present our 159th Annual Re-port for Mount Zion Temple. In September, ourBoard adopted our Strategic Plan focused on“Strengthening Connections”. This plan is notabout infrastructure rather relationships. It builds

on our vision of being a welcoming and vibrant Jewish spiritual home, open to all, liv-ing Torah (Life-long learning), Avodah (Worship) and Gemilut Chasadim (Acts of Lov-ing Kindness). In our holy community, we celebrate, comfort, and create meaning in ourlives while we seek justice in our world.

The reports inside the report (available at mzion.org) detail specific achievements withour Strategic Plan implemented in manifold ways.

In addition to our Strategic Plan - and related to it, we have focused this year on Torah. The primary vehicle for teaching Torah was introducing Mount Zion to Mussar, a wayto live Torah. For over six months, 75 congregants participated in the study and prac-tice of Mussar in four groups led by Rabbis Spilker and Adler, Cantor Strauss Klein, and Julie Dean. In February, we hosted Mount Zion’s first adult co-ed retreat weekendwith Alan Morinis, head of the Mussar Institute as our scholar in residence.

Our financial situation is stable, in large part because of our first Annual CampaignL’Chaim 5775. L’Chaim 5775 was a success, meeting both our participation and fi-nancial goals. We thank all who contributed to the Annual Campaign and all whoworked to make it happen.

Mount Zion remains connected to our local Jewish community and to Israel. We hostedand cosponsored a well-attended, day-long conference entitled From Confrontation toConversation—Israel on Campus and in the Community. Over Passover, we hosted a sederfor over 130 people and our last day Festival service was held at Sholom Home East. Wereceived our third Irving R. Fain award for Social Justice from the URJ (Religious Ac-tion Center) for our Year of Tzedek, learning and acting on our Jewish values for im-proving our world.

We are grateful for our partnerships, both clergy/staff and lay leaders, who make all ofthe above possible. We will miss Ana Apter, our interim Religious School Director, wholeaves us at the end of the academic year to join her husband Adam in his new positionin Philadelphia. We look forward to welcoming Susan Amram Summit as our new Re-ligious School Director in July.

With gratitude for our congregation.

Some of my fondest memories involvesinging in choirs. From the time I moved toWisconsin at the age of 9 and until I movedto Baltimore for graduate school 13 yearslater, I sang with over a dozen choral groups. It took me moving to the East Coast to learnthat the Midwest, and Minnesota in particu-lar, has earned a national reputation for choralexcellence. According to Chorus America,Minnesota is home to over a hundred inde-

pendent professional, community, and youth choirs, in additional tothousands of choirs at schools and houses of worship.

We at Mount Zion are doing our part as well: we are home to three vi-brant choirs that encompass kids (Shir Tzion), teens (Shir Chants), andadults (Torah Tones) from the age of 8 on up! And we are thrilled to an-nounce that Dr. Jayson Rodovsky will be joining us as the new directorof Torah Tones.

Jayson is a graduate of Yale University’sSchool of Music and holds graduate de-grees in choral conducting and organ per-formance. He served as Editor ofTranscontinental Music Publishing, a di-vision of the Union for Reform Judaism(URJ) in New York, for over 10 years. Inaddition, he has served as Organist andMusic Director at congregations in Con-necticut and New York, including Cen-tral Synagogue in Manhattan,Congregation Kol Ami in White Plains,NY, and Larchmont Temple in Larchmont, NY. Jayson is a Past Presi-dent of the Guild of Temple Musicians (GTM) and has led choirs forthe URJ, the American Conference of Cantors (ACC) and the GTM,at their annual conferences and the URJ’s Biennial. He also is a mem-

ber of The AmericanGuild of Organists(AGO) and serves onthe advisory board of theARCOS Chamber Or-chestra. Dr. Rodovsky isa frequent lecturer, per-former and presenter atconferences and conven-tions of organizations in-cluding the AmericanChoral Directors Associ-ation (ACDA), theMusic Educators Na-

tional Conference (MENC), Chorus America and the American Guildof Organists (AGO).

We are blessed to have someone as musically talented and committedto Jewish music as Jayson leading our Torah Tones. Please join us inwelcoming him to the Mount Zion community, and consider addingyour voice to our joyful choruses!

FROM THE PRESIDENTWhat an honor and pleasure to communi-cate with you for the first time as MountZion’s President! For those of you who maynot know me (yet), a short introduction: Mywife, Kate, and I joined Mount Zion 22years ago along with our 3 young children,Eliot, Carlos and Rosa. Sons Sam and Abesoon followed. I will complete one cycle ofTemple life, God willing, when I accompany

Rabbi Spilker and Abe’s 2015 Confirmation Class on their New York ex-cursion in October, 14 years after chaperoning the same trip with Eliot’s class when the ruins of the Twin Towers were still smoldering. Kate and I are both transplants from Appalachia; Kate hails from Penn-sylvania and I am a loyal son of West Virginia. Kate and I met in a cal-culus class at the U of M, thus providing me with a single positivememory of that experience. We live in the West Metro and drive past anumber of synagogues to be a part of this community, a reminder thatMount Zion is truly a congregation of the greater Twin Cities.I am grateful to my friend and outgoing President, Betsy Rest, for hersuperb leadership and many accomplishments including the “Strength-ening Connections” strategic plan which was approved by the Board lastSeptember. Since then, our focus has been on carrying out several of theplan’s key recommendations. “Strengthening Connections” will con-tinue to guide the Board’s work in the coming years. Based on the fourstrategic goals outlined in the plan, here are a few of the changes that arealready in place or “coming soon”:

RelationshipsDeepened connections to congregants and clergy through forming•Mussar Practice Groups Learned stories of new and current members through Humans of•Mount Zion & Board Profiles in our Temple publications Enhance Lipschultz Lounge as a gathering space, making it more•inviting to form and feed relationships (Summer of 2015)Provide permanent nametags at services and events (proposal to•Board in Summer of 2015)Create a biennial survey to assess congregant satisfaction (trial run•with the Board in Summer of 2015)Created a visitor’s “Ask Me” table at Shabbat Onegs •

ParticipationAssembled and trained a new volunteer leadership team to over-•see our summer Shelter Program

Digital CommunicationRe-designed Mount Zion’s website and This Week at Mount Zion•to make it more mobile device-friendly, interactive and fun. Featured our Humans of Mount Zion stories on the Mount Zion•web site and This Week at Mount Zion.

GivingEstablished the L’Chaim 5775 Annual Campaign with a focus on•communicating the Jewish value of a “free-will offering” to everyMount Zion household.

Thanks to YOU, the Mount Zion community, for realizing these ac-complishments through your gifts of kindness, passion, hard work andfinancial support. Todah Rabah!

Dan Rybeck, President

Mount Zion Temple Board of Directors

As we find many ways to strengthen connections at Mount Zion, this column is away to get to know members of Mount Zion’s Board of Directors. Our nominationsprocess for the Board is very open and involves many people. Therefore our Boardis as diverse and representative as can be. We are grateful for all who serve in lead-ership and volunteer their talents for our community. We are blessed that BatyaSpector volunteered to write these vignettes.

Gail GendlerGail is a long-term Mount Zion Temple memberwhose two daughters, Jennifer and Allison, nowcollege graduates, attended our Religious School.Gail sought membership because she desired a re-ligious community with a physical as well as spir-itual space, a congregation and building withprograms that supported strong Jewish identities. In her words: where they would have no questionsabout who they were and why they were, where they

felt at peace and at home... And that’s what Mount Zion is; it’s a placewhere your identity and your religious tradition is not questioned. Shejoined the Board of Directors in 2011, first as a regular member andcontinued while serving as Sisterhood Co-President from 2012-2014.As Co-President, Gail initiated the ‘Women’s Networking Group’, as acollaborative event with Bet Shalom and Temple Israel Sisterhoods. Gailis also an Area Director for the Midwest District of Women in ReformJudaism. Gail sees her congregational role as an individual effort withinthe larger community where we each contribute to meet the interestsand needs of current and future members.

Gail and husband Roger live in White Bear Lake; Gail is a realtor withEdina Realty and Roger is retired after a lifetime of employment withthe Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

Aimee GonzalezMount Zion Temple clergy invited Aimee to aleadership position with Mount Zion Temple’s20s and 30s group, Noazim (the daring ones) inspring 2013. That led her to a one year member-ship on the Board of Directors for an open seatrepresenting Noazim and in spring 2014 to a twoyear term as a regular Board member. It’s a greatbenefit to Mount Zion Temple that the term ‘dar-ing one’ suits Aimee even further because she is

the impetus and energy for making technology a key aspect of MountZion’s new strategic plan, ‘Strengthening Connections.’ With ideas inher mind like live streaming Shabbat and Holiday services and withrecommendations from Tom Marver for clergy podcasts of Torah study, sermons or other learning activities, Aimee is eager to ensure MountZion Temple is accessible to all who want to be connected to our syn-agogue community in a variety of ways. Aimee, whose Hebrew nameis ‘Rivka Ami’ (Rebecca for her mother and Ami meaning ‘my people’),also enjoys opportunities to engage in real-time, face-to-face conversa-tion with co-congregants.

The March 26, 2015 issue of Humans of Mount Zion, written by PhilGoldman, provides details of Aimee’s family, educational and profes-sional background.

MAZALLIFE LONG LEARNING ONE STEP AT A TIME

Library News

Milton Steinberg’s As a Driven LeafIt is my personal opinion that Rabbi Milton Steinberg’s As a DrivenLeaf is the finest Jewish novel ever written. There’s certainly no lack ofcandidates for that literary assessment – other titles which come im-mediately to mind are Henry Roth’s Call It Sleep; Andre Schwarz-Bart’s The Last of the Just; and Arthur A. Cohen’s In the Days ofSimon Stern. Others would nominate works by Philip Roth, ElieWiesel, or Abraham Cahan – among others. For me, what makes Stein-berg’s novel stand out from the rest is his creativity and mastery of thedetails of Jewish life in the second century. Steinberg takes one line, among others, out of the Talmud, and creates a whole world out of it.The line is about Elisha ben Abuyah – the esteemed rabbi who becamean apostate as he sought reason and certainty in Hellenistic philosophyand civilization when his faith faltered in the face of personal tragedy. But it is not only Steinberg’s magisterial mastery of the tensions of sec-ond century Jewish life in the Roman empire at work here; there isRabbi Steinberg’s allegory of Jewish life in the twentieth century, andthe alienation of Jews in modernity desiring to find the answer thateluded Elisha. A seminal work by one of the last century’s greatest rab-binical minds. Strongly recommended.

SOCIAL ACTION UPDATETzedek = Justice

Mount Zion Receives Social Action Award

Mount Zion’s Year of Tzedek received the Irving J. Fain Award for out-standing social action programming. The Religious Action Center of Re-form Judaism presented the prize to nine Reform congregations during itsbiennial conference in April. Tom Marver accepted the award on MountZion’s behalf,

Mount Zion previously received the award in 2002 and 2009. The framedcertificates will go on display in the building later this year.

A Year of Tzedek — Having the Conversation began in the fall of 2012 as aneffort to bring social justice to the forefront of congregational life. The pro-gram challenged members to connect with tikkun olam on individual, con-gregational, and community-wide levels.

“During the year, we helped each person connect a formative part of theirlife-story to one of three Jewish motivations for justice: leaving Egypt, beingin the image of God, and tikkun olam,” said Rabbi Adam Stock Spilker.

Mount Zion attempted to show congregants how seemingly small actionssuch as sharing a personal history or recording a community narrative canpull people of different backgrounds together to tackle social justice issuesin our city, state, and nation. Events during the year included a post-elec-tion open meeting, a public meeting with Governor Dayton, and a mitz-vah day at Neighborhood House. Cantor Rachel Stock Spilker led amitzvah trip to a Jewish community in Uganda.

“We emerged from this year with renewed intention, greater clarity aboutour Jewish mandate for justice, and new partnerships with our neighborsto address the economic disparities and racial injustices in our commu-nity,” Rabbi Spilker said.
