Treatment PlantLocated in Aranguren Valley, 12 km southwest of Pamplona, the Góngora Urban Waste Treatment Plant, in operation since 1992, covers a surface area of77 hectares.
It treats the waste from the 50 municipalitiesbelonging to the Greater Pamplona Area, averaging 365 tonnes per day.
The facility combines package sorting with the controlled landfilling of the other domestic waste and non-recyclable fraction.

Controlled LandfillNon-recyclable urban waste is dumped into the cells, compacted andcapped with earth. The landfill cells are lined with impermeable material and equiped with protection measures to minimise their environmental impact. When they fill upthey are sealed and subsequently revegetated.

Leachate CollectorLeachates, contaminant liquidsresulting from the breakdown of organic material, are piped from the cells to the Araxuri Water TreatmentPlant.

The gas generated by the breakdown of organic waste materialis captured in the cells and stored in the Gas Holder, from where it is conveyed to the Gas-to-Electric plant.

The plastics, metals and tetra packsoriginating from selective waste collection are sorted by a combination of electronic, mechanical andmanual means, allowing their recovery as raw materials for new production processes.
