October 2012 NewsletterTRANSCRIPT
~~Newsletter from GlobeMed – October 2012~~ Hey Health Alert – Uganda! A lot has happened since we released our first issue. Here’s a quick update of what we have been doing over this passed month!
GlobeMed’s General Body
• Our organization is in full swing! Our body, which made up of over forty members, has been meeting every Monday night to work with each other and discuss human rights issues, the needs for global health equity, and the history of Uganda among many more topics!
• The process of selecting our GROW Interns this year has been underway and is almost complete! This year we are excited to say that we will likely have four interns coming your way (guys included)!
• We have also had our Fall Retreat, which, after having to move it to a different location, turned out to be a big success! A lot of members came, and we all had a great time over delicious food and good conversation!
Fundraising
• We have just recently hit our $1,000 dollar mark, and a lot of fundraising events are on
the way! • We have made nearly $200 dollars selling bags and beads at our local hospital’s
Multicultural Affair and selling bags in the middle of the heart of our school’s campus! • We have also held benefit nights at local restaurants, and have a few more coming up
before the winter. We just had a bake sale, too! • Our major annual fundraising/awareness event, the Red Tie Affair, is also coming along
very nicely. We have 7 performing groups and two amazing speakers: a doctor who specializes in HIV/AIDS research and a man who has been living with it for a while!
• We have also set up our upcoming Basketball clean-‐up schedule where we will gain $125 from each game we clean up at. We will generate over $1250 just from them!
Collaboration for Awareness
• Recently, we have been connecting with fellow GlobeMed chapters at Universities all over the United States. We have Skyped with the University of Michigan and Emroy University.
• We have also had a major retreat with our more local neighbor at Duke University. The retreat allowed many of our own members network with others, and share ideas about fundraising events and talk about our respective partners.
• Our fundraising, or campaigns, committee has also made it a point to collaborate with student organizations on campus, most notably A Drink for Tomorrow, which focuses on water sanitation issues, and the HIV/AIDS committee of Red Cross, which has been very interested in helping us with our own fundraising and awareness events.
• Hope you enjoyed our cards!
Until Next Time
We have a lot coming up, and that means a lot of things to be excited about! We will soon have our GROW interns, have many more fundraising events, and even a recap of our largest annual fundraiser. Until then we will continue to keep in contact with you and work hard to do the best we can.
In solidarity,
GlobeMed at UNC
