What is global warming?
Global warming is the increase in the average
temperature of Earth's near-surface air and oceans
since the mid-20th century and its projected
continuation. According to the 2007 Fourth
Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel
on Climate Change (IPCC), global surfacetemperature increased 0.74 0.18 C
(1.33 0.32 F) during the 20th century. Most of the
observed temperature increase since the middle of
the 20th century has been caused by increasing
concentrations of greenhouse gases, which result
from human activity such as the burning of fossilfuel and deforestation. Global dimming, a result of
increasing concentrations of atmospheric aerosols
that block sunlight from reaching the surface, has
partially countered the effects of warming induced
by greenhouse gases.

How Global Warming Works
Fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas)
Carbon Dioxide (CO2

The Suns energy
passes through the
cars windshield.
This energy (heat)
is trapped inside
the car and cannot
pass back through
the windshield,
causing the inside
of the car to warm
up.

Whats the difference
between global warming
and climate change?
GLOBAL WARMING
is the increase ofthe Earths averagesurfacetemperature due to
a build-up ofgreenhouse gasesin the atmosphere.
CLIMATE CHANGE
is a broader termthat refers to long-term changes inclimate, including
averagetemperature andprecipitation.

Simple Things To Do
Turn off your computer or the TVwhen youre not using it.
Take shorter showers. Heating water uses energy.
Keep rooms cool by closing the blinds, shades, or
curtains.
Turn off the lights when you leave a room.
Use compact fluorescent bulbs.
Plant Trees.

Simple Things To Do
Dress lightly when its hot instead of turning
up
the air conditioning. Or use a fan.
Dress warmly when its cold instead of turningup the heat.
Offer to help your parents keep the air filters on
your AC and furnace clean.
Walk short distances instead of asking for aride in the car.
Plant a tree. Recycle.
