GFWC MORROW CIVIC WOMAN’S CLUB NEWSLETTER Check us out at http://mcwcga.org/
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT: Club Sisters, On a very cold January morning, our new club year began with a beautiful installation ceremony. I would like to give a big thank you to Tina Reasey-Daniel, State President Elect, for conducting the installation and to the many club members who attended and offered their support to the new officers. A special thanks to Renee and her group of ladies who prepared the delicious brunch and to Mary Harmon for singing the Club Collect. All of our community service committees have met and have decided on their plan of work. Through my observation at these meetings, I’ve seen club members offering an input, accepting other members’ suggestions, volunteering to oversee the completion of a project or activity, and working together as a team. Also, I saw an excitement and enthusiasm among the members which was so good to see. Our other committees have met and made plans for the upcoming year. They have taken into consideration some of the suggestions that were written in the surveys. These plans, along with the community service plans, will be shared at the February meeting. This club year, we are implementing some of our members’ ideas. First, our club meeting starting time has changed to 6:30 PM with refreshments at 6:00PM. Second, our programs have changed to some meetings with a speaker and the others with working on an activity. Third, it has been suggested that we change our club meeting seating arrangement. Instead of sitting in rows of chairs, we will sit at the round tables. This will provide a place for our refreshments and our notebooks. Let’s give this seating arrangement a try at our February meeting, and let us know your thoughts. Looking forward to an exciting and fun club year! Angelia

ARTS
Details of the latest opportunities to enjoy the arts in our area can be found on the last page of the newsletter so that you can easily remove it for reference during the month.

Continue to send your photos to Mia so that she can include them in the slideshow of members’ photography during the social hour before each meeting. Don’t be shy! You don’t have to be a professional to join in. This is a lot of fun for everyone and a great way to share your adventures and treasures with other club members. Please send your photos to Mia Broder, [email protected] or text: 404.245.3122. Remember the hours you spend on your photography, editing, and mounting for the photo contest or for the Fashion Show can be placed on the list of art hours.
CONSERVATION
GET INVOLVED: This year Conservation will be supporting the Clayton County Humane Society. Clayton County Humane Society strives to create a community where all animals receive appropriate care, love and attention at all times; are treated with dignity and respect; provided necessary veterinary care; and protected from all forms of cruelty, abuse and neglect. CCHS is a “no-kill” animal rescue facility. CCHS provides a loving, caring environment to animals until permanent placement in adoptive homes can be achieved. NO ANIMAL IS EVER EUTHANIZED TO MAKE ROOM FOR ANOTHER. While in the care of CCHS, animals are provided with nutritious food, medical care for illness and injury, preventative vaccinations, and all animals are sterilized prior to adoption. Though the care of animals is the main priority, CCHS also focuses on educating the public regarding the importance of spaying and neutering, responsible pet ownership, and the humane treatment of all animals. For more information, check out www.claytoncountyhumane.org. Please, help us support Clayton County Humane Society by bringing items for a “Pet Shower” for the animals in the care of CCHS to the February meeting. The items on the CCHS Wish List are:
1. Gift Cards from Home Depot, PetSmart or Walmart 2. Clay cat litter – ALWAYS NEEDED (Tidy Cat or Fresh Step brands only….other brands are very dusty and
cause our fire alarm to activate) 3. Arm and Hammer cat box deodorizer 4. Dry dog food – Purina One (rice or chicken formulas only) 5. Dry cat food – Purina Cat Chow (original formula in blue bag) 6. Dry kitten food – Purina Kitten Chow 7. Nylabones for dogs – all sizes 8. Dog toys (NO BALLS….they clog the drains) 9. Dog leashes, collars and harnesses (small and medium) 10. Baby shampoo 11. IMPORTANT ECO-DATES:

February 2, 2018 is World Wetlands Day. Celebrate and explore the wonders the areas protect by visiting one of the local wetlands centers: Newman Wetlands Center in Clayton County; The Ridge Nature Area in Fayette County; Cubihatcha Outdoor Center in Henry County. Remember to record your visits on the Conservation sign in sheet. February 20, 2018 is Georgia Arbor Day. While National Arbor Day is the third Friday in April, it is too warm at that time of year to plant trees in Georgia, so in 1890 the first Georgia Arbor Day was proclaimed by the Georgia General Assembly to promote tree planting in the state at a time of year when trees would stand the best chance of survival after planting. In 1941 Georgia Arbor Day was set as the third Thursday in February. For more information on the benefits of trees, check out this link to the Georgia Forestry Commission: http://www.gfc.state.ga.us/community-forests/tree-benefits/index.cfm.
EDUCATION See you next time.
HOME LIFE
February is Heart Health Month. Please wear red to club meeting. We will be making Valentines for community service and shut-ins during the pre-meeting time. Materials will be provided.
PUBLIC ISSUES
MORROW PUBLIC LIBRARY The Morrow Public Library is closed for an unknown time. Their heating system quit and a new one costs about $120,000. The Clayton County Commission Chair is being contacted in hopes of finding out more information. All of us need to communicate with any one we know our displeasure in this situation to put all the pressure possible to secure funds for a new heating plant. WINTER SURVIVAL Take a coat for you and all your passengers when you go anywhere. Getting stuck on the road may not necessarily be your fault, but it could still happen. Also, include these few items in your car even if you do not prepare a full survival kit. A blanket(s) –flashlight – water – charged cell phone (charger for car) – snacks Put the items inside the car in case the trunk is frozen shut. Drive with your car’s gas tank fuller rather than on the last half of the tank.

These suggestions come from a survival list designed in Wisconsin, but some of these days we feel we may be living somewhere like that. Thank you for reading our email and call Connie Johnson for a prize. LEGISLATIVE SIGN-UP There will be a legislative sign-up sheet at the Public Issues table as well as the regular sign up sheet. Whenever you contact any of the elected officials, please sign the sheet in the areas that pertain to what you did. We encourage each of you to be aware of the actions being taken by our representatives. These actions affect our lives in many ways. They hear from so few constituents that each of your contacts counts as “ten” people thinking this way. We have power. Please communicate and then chart it so we can see how good we are!!! COLLECTIONS We will begin collecting towels – mostly bath towels – but the smaller ones and wash cloths as well. Do not discard a towel, but bring it to Club. Many groups are in need of them. If you find a sale on towels, please feel free to indulge as well. This will be a year-long project – so any time you are cleaning out will be a good time to bring it in. Also, if you have bath robes that you no longer need, we will be collecting those as well. The shelters will welcome them for their residents.
Special Project: Women’s History Resource Center (WHRC) There’s work to be done at the Clayton State University (CSU) Archives! You don’t have to be proficient at scanning. We need members to look through scrapbooks, remove staples,
find where loose photos go, etc. Tell me (Lois Wolfe) if you want to be involved in the MCWC archival project anytime during this year. I will submit your name for a CSU volunteer badge and a parking pass. Help preserve our club’s (and community’s) history.

Water is life! But what if you did not have access to clean, safe water? Majok Marier and other Lost Boys of Sudan trekked across three countries in search of safety, food, and water during the Sudanese Civil War. Now working steadily in the US since 2001, Majok, his fellow Lost Boys, and many concerned friends have created a non-profit organization, Wells for Hope, to bring water wells to villages near Rumbek, South Sudan. How can MCWC help their cause? We can join Majok Marier on the 2018 Walk for Water and Health on Sunday, March 11, from 2-4pm, leaving from The Carter Center parking lot in Atlanta. Check out the information on http://www.wellsforhope.org/ Why participate? Three reasons will be shared during our Plan of Work discussion. Will you, your family members, and/or friends register? Hopefully, you’ll say yes, when asked at our meeting.
Are you an Amazon shopper? Do you know that you can support Save the Children Federation Inc, Fairfield CT, with your purchases? Our Plan of Work discussion will reveal how you can register so that your shopping will result in a 0.5% donation of eligible products’ purchase price to support the non-profit organization. Tallulah Falls School I attended (sort of) the Board of Trustees meeting in the snow on Tuesday evening. After going out to eat, we prepared for Wednesday’s meeting. We woke to 2” of snow and
meeting was cancelled. The six of us who had spent the night looked at our respective routes and decided we had a 4 hour window of opportunity to travel home. All made it just fine but I was stiff as a board when I got out of the car from the tension of driving in the snow. Visions of the last time I attempted that and did a 360 were dancing in my head. At any rate, you were bravely represented and I certainly caught up on my prayer life.

We will be collecting Prom dresses, wraps, purses and jewelry at the February and March meetings (no shoes). We will also happily accept monetary donations for purchase of shoes, cleaning, boys tux/suit rental, etc. These dresses allow students who could not afford to attend prom to discreetly select their outfits and proudly attend the prom. Thanks for your donations.
