Lisa Hayes of GFC writes, “In 2013 our volunteer doctors and nurses provided 147 free well woman exams. That exam consists of a clinical breast exam, pap/pelvic exam and testing for sexually transmitted infections, if requested or indicated. One of the women having a well woman exam was a 26-year old who was eventually diagnosed with cervical cancer. We arranged for this woman to receive treatment with a GYN specialist and assisted her with applying to the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) to cover her treatment expenses, which included surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. The woman has now completed her treatment.” Mammography, health education, patient advocacy, transportation, and prevention of womens’ illnesses are services of the WHI. Ms. Hayes further notes, “Research has shown being overweight and having a high body mass index can cause girls to start their menstrual cycles earlier, leading to longer uninterrupted menstrual cycles, which increases breast cancer risk. Also, being overweight when you are older can delay menopause, again leading to longer uninterrupted menstrual cycles and increased breast cancer risk.” Educational sessions will begin shortly with our female patients. Out in the Cold

She was asking for

medication to improve the

partially treated sinusitis

and upper respiratory

infection that relapsed

after an earlier round of

antibiotics. It was

important to be healthy

and not coughing later in

the week when she was

interviewing for a new

job. This was her chance

to get out of the shelter

and back in the workforce

and she did not want the

illness to be an obstacle.

Then she confessed she

was 49 with kids and in a

shelter for one week even

though she was a former

paralegal. She was

embarrassed but admitted

she would be happy to get

the job as a hotel

housekeeper. Her parting

words were, “Hey it’s

money and I have got to

get out of the shelter.”

She left with medications

and our best wishes.

Westminster and Wellness Plans

GFC has been providing medical care on the near east side of downtown for 25 years. Most recently, our services have been out of the Westminster Community Center. We see the numerous patients in humble facilities in the basement of the old church. Our dedicated physicians, nurses and clerks staff this location once a week. Shortly Westminster will renovate the clinic space providing a spacious clinic area with several exam rooms and treatment areas. GFC will provide medical equipment, furniture, supplies and medications. At our SVDP Wellness Center, Dr. Stephen Zentner will volunteer weekly providing continuity of care for our clients and bringing his considerable skills to this deserving population.

Our patients have been under increased stress with this intense winter. Several cases of chilblain have been seen with medical care and extra clothing being provided by GFC. Also numerous cases of influenza, bronchitis and endemic viral infections have brought in many patients to the GFC clinics.
